The NGP has almost twice the footprint of an iPhone 4, in my honest opinion, the 3DS fits in the pocket better than the DSi, which is better than the PSP which is better than the NGP. It's large, you can't deny it, it's feature set demands it, a screen that big. Looks are a very personal thing, but i've not been a huge fan of sony's industrial design for a while. In fact, the only two consoles of theirs I've really liked have been the PS2 Slim and the Original PSP line (slims included). The PS1, PS2, PS3 and Go never really sat well with me in matters of design, but that probably makes a great point for the consoles themselves. The NGP is, in my opinion, too busy. Not too sure why, but it reminds me of the Gizmondo a little
Almost twice? Not even remotely... it's 170mm vs. 110mm (or thereabouts). iirc NGP is 13mm wider than the original PSP, which was big... It is quite fat, though (which is probably where your "twice" comes from). That's my main concern, though. My phone has a huge screen, too (4''), but I got used to it, and since it's unbelievably thin (9.9mm) it doesn't really matter.
Kept you waiting
Actually, more than twice as big. I said footprint, not height. The total footprint of the iPhone 4 is over 4 times smaller than the NGP. The 'area' of the face is over twice as big as the iPhone as well. Like i said, they're different beast, but still can't shake the feeling that this will never be a 'portable' for me
- Firstly many ppl are idiots if they claim selling close to 70 million by the time the NGP releases is a failure.
- Secondly it didnt have the control scheme to be able to emulate all types of PS2 games perfectly which is why the second analogue stick is such a big deal and why the West hated it. Shooters were awkward to play as they will be on 3DS. Also those that claim that this was the only thing the PS3 library consisted of are idiots. Sony did try but some ppl are just blind. Patapon, Locco Rocco, Killzone Liberation, Jeanne D Arc and many others werent PS2 ports. Then you have the minis. People claim lots of things but poor control design was the killing factor in the west where the shooter is king.
- Thirdly you might think that going for the PS3 functionality on one front is pointless but then you are missing the point about cloud saving and taking your PS3 game save on the go. Read up on Kojima's thoughts when he spoke about announcing his new game at E3. There are currently close to 10 million Call Of Duty Black ops sales on PS3 and now imagine the next COD comes out with a NGP COD. Sony lets you use cloud saves and you can use your 3G network to play COD online anywhere in the world while you are on the move and against COD PS3 and NGP gamers. How can that not sound cool to you or anyone? If you are bored just download a user crerated level off the network for LBP2 on NGP and get going. NGP is ultimate form of online gaming on the go. Portable WiFi gaming is already MASSIVE in Japan and can potentially get massive in the West if the portable FPS things kicks off like i think it will and 3G makes this even easier. It starts.....You Can Soon Save Your PS3 Games In Thin Air.
- Finally i didnt see Sony only focusing on PS3 type games. Sure they had a few like Resistance, Killzone, LBP and Uncharted but did you notice that none of them are ports and all are new entries in their respective series? Yes they were heavy on the FPS but thats because they failed miserably in that departmernt on PSP so they needed to be. MGS4 was not confirmed for NGP. Hideo said he will announce a new game at E3. The other two Yakuza 4 and Lost Planet 2 two will probably be ported but hey thats third party so you cant blame Sony. Also i saw much more than just PS3 like games. Little Deviants, Smart ass and Broken were indications of new IP in the Nintendo game design like fashion. Then Epic games showed that defenders game which is the other front ( Apple ) Sony is attacking with Playstation Suite. Developers seem happy with the easy to develop for NGP kits which is a big plus after PS3. Imagine how many more games will be announced by E3 with the system still a year away. All in all its looking like a great system. People will nitpick about little things like design, size, battery life and other stupid things but at the the end of the day all we need is a good price point and good software support and this little baby will be one of the best portables ever created whether Nintendo or Apple fanboys like it or not. Sony done did good!!!
Speaking of price...Gamestop Now Taking Sony NGP Pre-Orders for $299 with $50 Deposit.
Its early days and a lot can change but thats the price point im banking on.
Because now it has a portable spin with it's multi-touch, back panel touch, gyro, connectivity, continous play, android games etc and all that extra stuff.
PSP had the same input and functions as a PS2 but it just didn't do it as well which made it (for me), pretty pointless.
So now we won't be JUST playing washed down PS3 games, we will be playing a new spin on PlayStation franchises.

For those of you that dont quite understand how Playstation Suite and Xperia fit into all of this an article by GamesIndustry.biz's might help you make more sense of Sony's two pronged strategy in the portable/mobile market.....Sony's Surprise.
Sales matter though, and are very important. I don't post about sales/market share because I care about a company winning so much as I care about what Japanese developers put there full support behind. DS is Japan's system, meaning all the RPG's, Action RPG's, Unique and Innovative titles go to that system first, and many times only. That's why sales are important, and price will dictate that heavily. Realistically, it's not probable for PSP to be the new market leader so quickly, but they do have an opportunity to have market share much more balanced, which in turns means third party support much more balanced, which in turn means I get all these great Japanese devs making games for a system that can really give you an epic RPG experience!
So you see, sales do matter a bit...lol
As for the what's different between these two system launches, AC!D summed up beautifully. Sony simply has the hit that $299 price-point with the base version, and I can't see how in the world this system will not give DS a run for it's money. I really never thought about that either @AC!D: when it came to PSP's design. I was certainly one of the many that complained about PSP's software lineup, and pretty much got exclusively on-to-go gameplay experiences like Jeann D'arc and Patapon. But even when I did try out the Syphon Filter or MGS games, it didn't feel right. Good games are good games, I think lousy controller design was indeed a big reason PSP didn't fly in the West. But man, Sony pretty much has it lined up for em this gen. Monster Hunter exclusive for the East that's equal to a PS3 game. Call of Duty/Killzone/Resistance/Socom4 release for the West (FPS much!? lol) And while your at it, why not Port GT5 over with some new content for the Euro market?
Things will get interesting, I only have some small reserves because I go where the RPG's go, it would truly be a shame for powerful hardware like NGP to not have some amazing experiences in the action/adventure and RPG genres. Nice article posted up, PS suite has a ton of potential with the Android market. Will we finally see some real competition to the App store? Perhaps PC's will start releasing with Apps now capable of downloading/playing PS games right with your keyboard. Play it smart Sony.
This all coming from a hardware company, you have to wonder what MS is cooking for there next E3 as well. Xbox720 not a hardware platform at all but just a service lol?

And honestly.... I have a Neo Geo Pocket Slimline and I don't find it that big.... it's THICK, and to me, THICK is way worse than "large". I guess because I'm a girl and whatever portable crap I carry around is going in my purse.
DS has tons of shovelware and also tons of awesome games. PSP has some really shitty games within its own library, but also lots of awesome games. I honestly don't see how anyone could complain about the game library on either portable console. I have probably 20+ games on each of them that I think are completely awesome and honestly, the "average" person doesn't buy over 20 retail games for a portable console anyway.
I think it's a stretch to right now say that "Sony has nailed it and can do it in the long run with the NGP" after just its first announcement. ??
I held out for about a year before I bought a PSP1, and I'll probably do the same with this one. I think it'll be really exciting to see what comes out for it though. I love portables!!
I totally agree. Its like i said in the other thread:
NGP not only has the muscle of the PS3 as far as horse power and TWO PS3 analog sticks , but it ventures out by adopting new features of its own such as a mic (in-game voice command similar to Life Line on PS2 or a headset), touch screen (a stylus solution), a touch pad on back to add even more unique game play, motion sensing (PlayStation Move on the go), and TWO cameras (the PSeye on the go) for augmented reality.
As it stands, this handheld is smoking all three of the home consoles as far as on board standards for new gameplay go. All Sony has to do now is get the price correct this time and the device will pose a stiff competitor to other mobile game devices.
SCEAblog put up the whole meeting on youtube at 1080p and translated

I think because well you are having that in addition to everything else. Also, in the interview with Houser in Eurogamer he says they are telling publishers they don't just want ports of console games on there. They want games that complement the console versions but not THE console versions. So..Uncharted 2-3 on PS3 and an Uncharted game that is it's own game on NGP. Also, I think the reason there is more excitement for even ports is the idea of the cross platform play. Taking the ps3 game on the go between PS3 and NGP seamlessly. That would be amazing if implemented to any significant degree. On top of all this, PSP was defined by ports...NGP has much more going for it I think in terms of software diversity. So I'm wondering why some feel that was a bad thing for PSP but is a good thing for NGP?
at least we now have a solution for the missing shoulder buttons. all they have to do is map it to the touchscreen at the back of the NGP
as for the fewer games comment... i'm speechless.
I'm actually incredibly excited about the social network capabilities of NGP. The Live area, web, and friends chat (NEAR too, but the idea of it tracking your every move is kinda scary) are all really neatly implemented and make much more sense on the portable NGP than it does on even the PS3. If they add voice and video chat outside and even within games, that would be truly awesome. Imagine coordinating clan meetings via voice chat on the go, or VOIP'ing a friend.
Sometimes I imagine playing games on the NGP to be even more fun than the PS3. Playing a game like Co-op portal, Killzone, Dead Nation, and Gran Turismo with augmented reality and PS3 quality graphics on the go is just too exciting. I hope to see many original titles as well though.
Sony negotiating with publishers to get all UMD game released in digital form.

http://scrawlfx.com/2011/01/sony-to-...p-games-on-ngpSony’s planning to re-release select titles from their library of PSP games for their Next Generation Portable (NGP), the company’s told Gigazine.
Additionally (this was known since last week’s event), you’ll be able to download PSP games released on the PlayStation Store and play them on your NGP.
The re-releases Sony’s mentioned today involve re-distributing the game on NGP’s new card format.
As for those who’ve already built up a library of games on UMD, Sony says that they’re currently investigating the possibilities of not having to re-purchase your collection. Though, they have no plans of creating a ‘UMD Reader,’ of any sort.

"There are a variety of OSes,” he said. “But we're focusing first on Android. There's also Windows, iOS and so forth, but we don't have the resources to make it compatible with everything from the start."
