    SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES

    ITS NEXT GENERATION PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

    Ultimate Portable Entertainment System Makes Its Debut This Year, Further Expanding the PlayStation® Business in the Portable Gaming Market

    Tokyo, January 27, 2011 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience. NGP will make its debut at the end of the year 2011.

    NGP is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation®. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by leveraging SCE's experience from both PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3®) entertainment systems.

    Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStation's DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to "encounter," "connect," "discover," "share" and "play" with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.

    * l Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface

    NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" moves of the fingers.

    * l Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks

    While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users' hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.

    * l LiveAreaTM

    Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called "LiveAreaTM" where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation®Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an "Activity" log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users.

    * l Near

    SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilizing PlayStation Network. The new application called "Near," developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance.

    * l New Game Medium

    NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.

    NGP will also come equipped with two cameras on its front and rear, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy the world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.

    PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for AndroidTM based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.

    SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

    Digital Foundry analysis of NGP

    Well we now know one price point it won't be $599.
    Yoshida did provide one further hint to go off of as we begin speculating about the price. When I brought up the initial shock at the PlayStation 3 launch price, he laughed and assured me, "It's not going to be $599."
    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...g-the-ngp.aspx

    Impression
    The upcoming device is actually surprisingly light with the dazzling screen taking up a fair amount of real estate on it. The button and analog stick layout feels familiar and comfortable. The sticks themselves feel good; Sony used the term micro analog sticks and it seems pretty apt. They have the give that's comparable to the sticks on the PS3's Dualshock controllers which make them comfortable to use. The shoulder buttons feel a bit thinner than the original PSP's, but work out well.

    The touch functionality takes some getting used to but works well. We found that the front facing touchscreen was responsive and not as much of a smudge magnet as we expected. While there were Sony staff members on hand with microfiber cloths at the ready, we noticed that the screen didn't look so bad after we played with the system for a bit. The back facing touchscreen took some getting used to and seemed to respond best to a light touch as opposed to our initial Frankenstein-like mashing.

    So is PLaystation Suite available for PS3 users as well? This is essentially an app store, it would be foolish not to include us PS3 users I think.

    It's Android devices only, I would doubt they'll publish any PSone games that aren't already on the PS3

    So is PS Suite purely games then? Because it seemed the way Kaz was talking about reality/digital PR stuff, it would evolve into more than PS1 ports and original games. I think all the separate apps should be combined into a single store with different sections. Music/Video/Games/Apps should all be integrated into a single software package, which is why I'm curious about PS Suite. Is this purely just for Android market, if so, then what is PSN functionality going to be on NGP which will have Suite as well as any the current PSN.

    Deviants looked like a lot of fun btw. Looks like a lot of fun with the back touchpad functions. I enjoyed watching the pinch/pokey/sliding type of gameplay offered in the game, Sony has found a beautiful alternative to dual-screens by adding touch-panels on both sides, you interact with the screen in two completely different perspectives. They simply have to sell this thing, there's certainly a lot of potential to be had here. I can imagine turn-based RPG and SRPG genres really getting unique features as the gameplay in those games are usually selection based. So instead of selecting icons/commands, users would be able to do touch-screen actions to make those selections more involving and fun.

    Near is really cool if you have a group of close friends and love to stay connected, but it's a little weird too, and seems to border on invasion of privacy, so I'm sure it'll be features to turn off your avatar being able to be sent messages/stats/game info being shared and the like. Other than that--looks extremely cool, hopefully Sony takes a cue from Wii and give us some fun customizable avatars to play around with that sits on the UI--with all the touch functionality, that could be an extremely enticing piece of software right there--touch-pad avatars would also appeal to casual buyers.

    Everyone should watch the conference. You really get a good perspective of it's capabilities and potential. Very impressive with the combination of dual-touchpads and motion controls. The graphical jump and brilliant screen is also a good bullet point to take on the 3D aspects of Ninty's console. Still, 3DS will have a bare minimum of 6 months on the market by itself--I think Holiday 2011 is a bit far, but hopefully it releases in the FALL season and comes sometime in September and not at the very end of the year.

    Kojima's focus could also be a big selling point, where games get released for PS3/NGP at the same time. Mass Effect 3 at home and on the go is a very sexy idea that hopefully comes into play on a large scale.

    So what's you guys predictions on the race this time around? It does seem eerily like the initial reveal of PSP and DS all over again right? Sony releases this crazy all-in-one console and Nintendo has this boxy, bulky pen stylus thing with like 10 games for it at launch and almost a generation apart in graphics. Scenario is definitely setup for a repeat at first glance here. It does seem like Sony's system is a lot more focused now though. All the features announced today seem to have very specific goals--which is a plus. And the biggest potential of course is the FPS crowd flocking to this system instantly. I think that's the selling point really, as the connectivity options will go over most users heads and touch-panels aren't new anymore, even if two touch pads will offer up some unique gameplay.

    I think I'm gonna go with Ac!d here and say NGP will outsell the original PSP substantially and will eventually become the more popular handheld in the U.S. I think FPS beats out 3D games in the U.S, but only time will tell. Nintendo will certainly stay the dominate console, but I think the race will be much closer this time as long as Sony gets 3rd party support and releases at a market-friendly price with the lower feature SKU.

    btw--I see Level 5 as one of the companies working on NGP

    I think globally 3ds will still outsell the NGP, but it won't matter. I do think Sony will find success with the NGP that they didn't with PSP in both hardware and software terms. More importantly, the Japanese support for NGP tells me there will be no shortage of JRPGs on the system and that is amazing enough in itself for me.

    Personally, I am WAY more excited for the NGP, but I will own both most likely.

    As long as it isn't hacked as early and as easily as the PSP, it will be more successful.

    Take all my money if you must Sony, just gimme it!! OK, maybe not, but for $399, I'll buy it, $299 would feel like a steal with all this tech, $499 would be too much, and we know it will never be priced at $599.

    Oh man, I haven't looked at a single thing on playstation since my PS3 broke and today I get an email on this thing which looks immense.

    I'm interested to see how many of these features stay in the final product.

    I'm wondering how the 3G connectivity is going to work though and what it will offer.
    I need to get home and watch the presentation!

    It's like it has 50%-75% of PS3's power. I can't wait to see some polished games.

    Call of Duty For NGP 'Will Set The Bar' For Next-Gen Portables.

    PlayStation Portable owners haven't seen a Call of Duty game on their platform since 2007's Call of Duty: Roads to Victory. That will change with the arrival of the next generation PSP, the NGP, says Activision.

    Philip Earl from Activision took to the stage at Sony's unveiling of the PSP2 to show the Call of Duty publisher's support for the handheld in the form of a new Call of Duty game. "We believe that NGP will change the way people play games on the go," Earl said, "and what better way to prove that, than with Call of Duty."

    "When considering the OLED screen, dual analog sticks, touch screens, and social connectivity options, the possibilities are endless," Earl said.

    It's that last item on the list of features that has us most interested, considering Sony's push for integration between the PlayStation 3 and NGP. If your future Call of Duty games could feature persistent progression across both the console version and the portable one, that could be quite the hook—not to mention the opportunity to sell double the Call of Duty games to PlayStation fans each year.

    No formal announcement yet about what Call of Duty NGP has in store, but expect big things closer to the handheld's launch.
    I dont know who will win in the sales department between the 3DS and NGP nor do i care but i do know one thing NGP is going to own the portable FPS crowd. Its amazing how one simple little addition like a second analogue stick can become a game changer for Sony. That combined with all the massive support from Japan makes me think the NGP will be hugely successful.

    Keep in mind this is pre-alpha too, on cutting edge hardware. I don't doubt that, on release, this game will look even better.
