Its not impossible. And I wouldn't be surprised if they do go for the plunge.

If Nintendo did, in fact, buy out Sega, Sega's developers like High Voltage Software could have higher budgets and better marketing.
Not to mention they could help make the games a lot better. Games like The Conduit, House of the Dead and Madhouse are all steps in the right direction, but the Sonic games (not that I've played them) seem to be getting worse and worse.

According to people who have seen and played Sonic Colors, this may be the Sonic game to push Sonic and Sega back on track.

Fuck no, I'm still waiting for a console sequel to Valkyrie Chronicles and I still want more from the Yakuza franchise.

Just as us Nintendo players are still waiting for Killer Instinct from Rare. Thanks to the Rare buy-out from Microsoft. HEH!

What the heck happened with that whole ordeal man. Banjo Kazooie, Killer instinct, Perfect Dark and even Conker were both awesome titles on N64 and just got wrapped up and crapped out with the MS buyout.

That was really one of those everyone loses things and something MS can't ever make up to the fans.

But a Ninty buyout--nah..VF series would never find a home on a Ninty console, and I'm not sure how well the Yakuza series will do either. SEGA is doing pretty well with some of there franchises, I think they should simply do some exclusive games with Ninty.

Big buyouts never work well. Its better to buy one dev at a time and build your studios over the longer term like Sony and Nintendo have done so well up to now. On the other hand Nintendo could purchase individual properties like Ubisoft did when Atari sold them the Driver Franchise.

I wouldn't mind seeing Nintendo make an investment in SEGA as a means to ensure more support for Nintendo platforms. SEGA are already supporting them pretty well but maybe it would help to get versions of games that are on the HD consoles.

It would seem like a now would be a bad time for them to be considering acquisitions. Either Nintendo has something big and expensive the dumped on last quarter or they might want to pay better attention to their financials.

Do you mean the 70.5 billion one time foreign exchange charge? They actually made $500 million in profit but took the charge off to exchange some assets and holdings from Yen to Dollars which cost them almost $800 million. Had nothing to do with high costs, low income or poor monetary management. You won't see this on their next quarterly report. It's like a tax write down charge....just a one time thing, not recurring.

Where the heck is VF6 btw? The fighting scene is thriving again, and Capcom has turned SF series into a "Revenge Meter" flashy festival. (although the backbone of SF4 is really awesome) I want that pure technical fighter back man...VF is still King.

Seems like it'd be better to take small hits over a few quarters then to go go into the red to write it all off at once.

Depends on what you expect the exchange rate to do. If you expect it to drop even lower, then best to write it all down now. It's also possible they may not have been able to break it down into smaller chunks.

I forgot to mention that sometimes recruiting talent instead of just buying everyone is also a great option. Im not talking about paying West and Zampella millions to make games for you either. Im more impressed with the way Sony Santa Monica recruits college kids like Jenova chen and the guy that did everyday shooter. Even more impressive is Valve. The guys that made left for Dead were recruited, the guys from college with the portal game demo and now the guys Valve recruited that made that new walking surface tech that will be used in Portal 2.
