    bd-rom starting to act up

i'm a little nervous.......i hope it doesn't die on me.

sometimes when i insert a game it doesn't load up the icon/bg screen and will error out when i launch a game. other times it works just fine. i'd hate to lose my launch 60gb now.

at least it's an easy and relatively cheap fix if you do. just buy a ylod unit off ebay and steal it's bd drive.

nah its going out. sometimes it also gives me grief when i try to eject discs.......i wish it were that simple. looks like i'll be shopping for a replacement drive soon.

Mine's just done it now - won't read/detect any disks, other than that it works fine. It is a tough swap to do?

[EDIT]: just bought a new lens & caddy thing off ebay, doesn't look too hard to install.

blow inside before you put the bd in!

I miss when the drive was open to clean like on the ps1
☑ First they ignore you (Pre-2007)
☑ Then they laugh at you (2007-2008)
☑ Then they fight you (2008-2010)
☑ Then they copy you (2011-2012)
    ☐ Then you win...

Mine is still operational, so i have yet to get a replacement drive, but when i do, i'll make a video of it.

My EU/launch PS3 started doing this a couple of years ago. I've bought a lens-cleaning CD, ran it on the console, and it immediately went back to perfect operation. Has been trouble-free ever since.

well....i noticed when mine wont read the disc, I'll sometimes try and eject it to re-insert it and it will get hung and i have to power off/on to get it out.

just tried downloading episode 2 of the tester and got an error while activating the download. after rebooting the ps3 i can no longer sign into psn. tested the network connection: internet is fine, psn test fails. getting error: 8001050F. Lots of problems, with no definitive solution. I still think its my bd-rom and i can get a replacement from ebay for $99. But is it worth a hundred bucks to see? Should I just save for a slim? I really hate giving up my launch console.

The login issue is widespread, Sony must be up to something.

trade it in to gamestop and right now you will get an extra 30$ when you buy a new system. I know for a 360 you get 90 + 30 = 120. So if you trade that in maybe you will only have to pay 100 or so for a new ps3.

if it were JUST the bd drive, you can buy a YLOD PS3 off of ebay and steal it's drive for about $40-60.

but, since you're having other issues, the gamestop thing might be a good idea.

If you buy a new system then you lose any save games that wont let you copy to an external source right? If you do a backup the restore is only good for that system if I remember correctly?

Or is it just the downloads that won't restore and all the save games will?

I think there are protected saves that you can't copy.

That what I mentioned, there are saves that will not let you copy the file to an external source. I assume you would lose those saves, unless a restore would restore save game files. DRM wise I understand why a restore wouldn't restore purchased content on any system but the one that the backup was done on, but not restoring save games seems pretty stupid. I would hate to have this happen when I am 20 + hours in to Star Ocean, I would probably just give up on the game if I had to start over because the save game couldn't be restored from a backup. Makes no sense if you cant recover something as simple as save games, whats the point of a backup then....

ps3 has a feature where you can transfer all data from one system to another via ethernet, right?
