September 11, 2003 - Nintendo's Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is one of the most hotly anticipated games of the 2003 holiday season, and for good reason: it's the sequel to one of the greatest multiplayer games ever created in Mario Kart 64. So how does the multiplayer mode in Double Dash stack up? IGNcube hand the chance to play three different four-player modes featured in the game at the recent GC 2003 show in Europe. Here's what we can tell you:
The version of Double Dash we played was far from complete, but it showed a speed increase in the multiplayer mode. We saw both a standard race and two battle arena levels in four-player split-screen action and both impressed. It's clear that the arena battles in particular will be an addictive undertaking. Characters can once more gather special items and then blast them at opponents, race across multiple tiers or have it out in a flat stadium. One change: it looks as though when someone runs out of lives, they are out for good; no bomb lives, in other words -- or, at least not in the version we played.
We've grabbed a bunch of new videos that show off the multiplayer modes in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Check them all out in our media section.
