I hate the whole concept of ink cartdriges or whatever for saving, cuz I have to leave the GCN on as an alternative to saving when I need to go somewhere...

I think It adds to the Survival horror theme.

Well I like it that you have to worry about dying and everything but I would like it better if there were something like where you could save it, turn it off, turn it back on and be in the same spot, but then if you die it puts you back at your ink cartridge save and not that one.

If you progress more into the game you have more than enough. I have 14 ink ribbons and 4 saves.
