PSP delayed?

Looks like the US PSP launch of March 2005 may not be possible.


Despite Sony assuring that the PSP handheld is on course for a crucial Japanese launch at the end of 2004 in tandem with Nintendo's rival DS system, several analysts are growing increasingly concerned that Sony's handheld may miss the current March 2005 date scheduled for North American (and Europe, we assume).

"We continue to monitor the status of development for the upcoming Sony PlayStation Portable and believe that wide publisher support may be challenging for a North American launch in the March 2005 quarter," read a report from American Technology Research analyst PJ McNealy.

One major concern is that American developers have yet to receive PSP development kits, more serious still is a quote from a Sony memo which reads "We believe there may be internal issues for SNE with the PSP that are not only technical, but also business-model related."

"In order for it to have a successful launch, [the handheld] needs support from several different SNE divisions such as SNE Pictures and SNE Music," continued McNealy's report. "This also means that development kits must be made for not only the game developers, but also members of the movie and music divisions to be able to put content on SNE's Universal Mini-Disc."

Complications indeed - and if McNealy's harbourings of doom prove correct we even fear for a fully-featured Japanese launch.

^don't be, psp will have a very small section of the market if anything...and as long as there's nintendo, you'll still be able to enjoy there games....even if it's on Xbox 3...Xenon 2...whatever it's gonna be called...

DS - Developers have dev kits and have for a while.

PSP - No develoepr has a dev kit yet.

Can you tell my why you would hate ALL of the games (1200+) for the playstation. Or is it just because your a fanboy that can't appretiate anything non-nintendo. God, and you people complain about the casuals...

They are predicting the systems release 8 months prior to it's release? Thought i would enjoy it, this is to be taken with a grain of salt for now.

Do you think enough developers will come up with launch games in 8 months if they receieved dev kits tomorrow?

That is why they are speculated the delay. Couple that with the LCD screen shortage and you get a high probability of delay.
