A classic game is something people will remember 20 years from now and recall how great of a game it was. Games that refresh the gameplay and grab the gamer by the neck and consume them for hours are considered classics in my opinion. Out of the games released right now, I would have to say these are my classics:
Metroid Prime - I never really experienced Metroid before this, and now I know what I was missing. This game is amazing. It is at the top of my list. There are so many good things about it, and so little bad things.
Super Smash Brothers Melee- This game just added more and more on to the original. The lasting appeal for me was for over a year. The multiplayer was amazing, and I would not be suprised if it were to be considered the best multiplayer game of this generation.
Zelda: Wind Waker- I don't care how many people hate this game. They do not know what they are talking about until they play this. I know an X-Box fanboy who hated this game, but once he started playing it, he bought a gamecube just for it alone. The Cel-shading is still the best out of any game so far, and the gameplay is amazing. Yah, there were flaws in this game.. like the sailing, and perhaps the decision to use cel shading in a zelda game, but I still am placing this game at the top of my list. I loved the story and the experience as a whole.
Those are my 3 top ones. Others I would consider classics include:
Prince of Persia
Super Monkey Ball
Animal Crossing
Viewtiful Joe
Pikmin
Eternal Darkness
Others that were good, but just didnt quite captivate me:
Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart: DD
Halo
Zelda: Four Swords
(keep in mind that I loved all those, but I just dont think they will be remembered as well)
Nothing out now far will be remembered in 20 years except maybe GTA III. The only other games from this generation that may be remembered is Halo 2 (due to popularity, and the fact that its going to own) and the new LoZ.
Maybe we should of made this thread in late 2005.

Yeah, no one knows what will be a classic...for all we know, halo could die because a crappy 3rd game that no one buys or something...

GTA will definately be a classic. Look at how many fucking sales it's raked up.
Sales doesn't matter it's about the quality. Vice City wasn't really that much of a good game it's just rather pointless shooting which was fun but didn't make it unique.

^It's not quality either...it's purly luck, or facts....

GTAIII will be rembered cause it was the first GTA into 3d and millions of people loved it.
yup totally agree. GTA III was the definitive game of this gen so many people got to play a great game, the likes of Halo II, or Zelda won't change that.
But I have a felling that Halo II will be best game of this gen, seeing as how Half-life II sort of underwhealmed a few peoples.
The way Halo 2 is looking right now it very well could be the best game this gen. if Bungie pulls it off well. The more I read about it the more I want it.Originally Posted by Freeman_JI

Resident Evil: REmake
Beyond Good & Evil should be one... but many people wouldn't list it as such.
The classic games that are out right now:
REmake
Metroid Prime
Halo
Super Smash Bros. Melee
I'm saying MP2, RE4, Halo 2, GTA SA, and the new LoZ will be classics.
My picks would go with (speculation obviously) RE4, MP1, Halo 1/2 (more so 2), PoP, Animal Crossing, and Starcraft Ghost (I just don't think Blizzard can make a bad game). There aer others, it's late, I'm tired, and I don't think a remake can be considered a classic, I LOVE Twin Snakes and REmake, but they can't be classics, they are remakes.
Melee is the top pick I think. It was the first game I got for GCN and it still gets a fair share of play time. I would agree with JCIG that Beyond Good & Evil was an awsome game that was way too overlooked. I thought it was decent untill I beat it and the final impression after beating it was that the game was 2 l337 for anything.
