Updated Sales Numbers

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/story.cfm?sid=3393

"In what has to have been the lowest key launch for any Nintendo product in the company's illustrious history, Gamecube finally appeared in Japan on Friday to a lukewarm reception, packing a tiny line-up of three games and falling short of Nintendo's official figure of 500,000 units. Nintendo Europe confirmed to CVG this morning that 450,000 machines entered Japan last week, with the rest of the ship-out expected to arrive "imminently". Japanese news service Nikkei is reporting that sell-through may have been as low as 60 percent, meaning as few as 270,000 consoles may have found their way in Japanese gamers' hands. Compared to PlayStation 2 sales exceeding 980,000 units within 24 hours in Japan, the phrase "soft launch" has taken on something of a new meaning when applied to Gamecube. Nintendo's ploy was obviously deliberate, and many are now pointing to the lack of a Mario-only game as the reason for such a low-key launch, but the spectre of hardware production problems has already been mentioned today."

2. Get real, why post that garbage? Nintendo sold 300,000 GCN's in the first day. Luigi's Mansion is the #1 selling title in Japan right now, on any console. All this with only three launch titles and everyone glued to the tv's watching the attack on the WTC. Not a friggin bad launch if you ask me. Nintendo hasn't even begun the massive advertising blitz that will be coming in November yet!

these are updated numbers, not planetgamecube or some other GC fanboy site

thanks

and if you sell 270,000 consoles then yes, you will sell 1 of the 3 software titles with it, what else would you play? or would you just look at your new GC?

4. ..no more likely from an xbox fansite. What a joke site you pulled that from. The GCN sold 300,000 units. There were places with over 150 people in line waiting to buy. There are pics if you bother to look. What's your next piece of fiction gonna be?

LOL!!

did you even see the site address?
150 people in line does not make 300,000 sold units

please read the article

and Nikkei is a news service not a gaming news service

please stop, you are making a fool out of yourself

I was talking about the site. The nikkei said "may have been" They wouldn't know if it was 270,000 or 300,000 . In one day with no hype and the WTC thing on TV and only 3 launch titles, I'd say it was a great launch

Nikkei would know a hell of a lot more than a gc fanboy site and yourself

i think everyone who wanted a GC has got one

8. That's because every thing you think is wrong, as everyone here must know by now. Xbox would've sold about 5,000 units in the first day in Japan LOL. What a hunk of shlt that console is!

You're a real dumbass if you think 300,000 in the first day with 3 launch titles and the WTC event is a bad launch.
Do you realise that Luigi's Mansion is the #1 selling title in Japan?
That's on any console! Waverace is in the top5 selling titles in Japan as well. Yeah that must really suck for Nintendo having the TOP SELLING TITLE IN JAPAN. Yeah that's really laughable isn't it. I thought I heard a troll chuckling.

it's 270K over 4 days of sales

and I already explained why Luigid is number 1, there are no other games to get

and with such low console sales expect Luigi to fall by the wayside quickly

300,000 in the first day is good. Luigi is #1, deal with it.

17. GC Horrible launch!

The Sega Dreamcast sold more systems than Gamecube at launch, and we all know how that turned out. The only thing that can decide whether Gc Survive in the console wars is how well it does here in the USA.

18. yeah

i have to admit gamcube didn't sell as well as i had hoped, but it was a bad time, only three launch games, WTC, etc.

Who's fault was it that NIN only released 3 games?

I mean, i recall quite a few of you saying releasing only 3 games will be good for software sales. But it doesn't seem that good for Console sales. The damn things won't even sell out before their next shipment.

You can watch this site for sales, but they are a week behind right now.

20. 80% or retailers selling GameCube have depleted their stocks in the first 24hours

As for empty streets, many stores did not open till' the stroke of mid-night, the recent terroists attacks surely took their toll, and many gamers pre-ordered and had their purchases delievered. GameCube's selling like hotcakes.
