I'm pretty darn sure they cost more... But I'll check up on that just to be sure.

  2. #22
    You'll see I'm right.

  3. its a progessive scan dvd player store price : 400 bucks
mini-dvd are not cheaper to make lets say there about even why?
there are extra costs in using non standard-dvd's extra tools have to be made.for the normal dvd's they are already mass made so difference in price is neglectible.they use them as anti-piracy protection.

  4. GCN's MDVD's are dfeinately gonna be cheaper to manufacture.

#1 GCN's MDVD media is 4CM smaller in diameter than XB/PS2's, also the inner rim is a little larger, which also reduces the use of platic.

#2 The anodized alluminum (read surface) has to be sterilized and produced, GCN's MDVD's use far less than their standard DVD counterparts.

So far not much information has been released on XB's software medium aside from it being housed on a standard DVD. If they go with a system like Sony has (colored discs) or like Sega (encrypted inner-rim) that will drive up costs.

GCN's software medium also has a inner rim like Sega's GDROM's. Factor in the lower cost of materials to produce the discs, GCN pulls ahead of the pack with lower costs per disc. And as you've seen Nintendo has set the standard software MSRP at $49.99-the same as Sony.

  5. Also I already have 3 DVD players in my humble abode. DVDROM for my PC, a standalone, and my PS2 why should I have to shell extra money for a 4th?

  6. are you still raving on the exta cost for the dvd-player? you dont pay for that!

"You buy the DVD package for $29, and that enables DVD movie playback," Bach explained. "The reason we did that is because for those of you who follow the DVD market, there's actually cost in including that in the box, and we didn't want everybody who bought the Xbox, which is a game device, to pay that cost. So it's only for about 10 or 15 percent of the people who we think are going to want to play DVD movies on the box."

they use the dvd for its capacity and to lower the cost by using standard tools.like i said there wont be a major price difference when mass produced.

Yes, yes I know that, I guess I need to make my underlying points more simpler next time. It still costs money to implement the ability to play a standard DVD's MPEG-2, even though you've yet to buy the remote package to enable the ability. That adds to extra costs towards the consumer, which in my case doesn't need another DVD player. Also it's almost entirely unlikely Xbox will use standard DVD's as their software medium. They'll need to go with a proprietary method, just like Sony, Sega, and Nintendo for their games, so just like the rest of the competition Xbox games will almost undoubtedly list at a MSRP of $49.99.

  8. nope standard

  9. That didn't say anything about XB's media format being proprietary. It is almost a guaruntee that they will. So just like Sony and Nintendo Xbox games will most likely be retailed at a $49.99 MSRP.

i don't think gamecube is a crap console. the reason im not getting xbox is because i don't want 2 spend another $300 dollars on a system and some of xbox games don't really excite me alot. except 4 halo . 2 me munch is wac . but i don't think xbox will win the console wars. ps2 first gamecube second and xbox short of second place. thats 2 me how its going 2 be.

  11. #31
yeah... there's not that many interesting games i've seen for the XB. Only like Halo and maybe Munches. There's SSBM, Dinosaur Planet, PD2, Pikmin (it looks alright), and many others that I like for the GCN

  12. For me it's the games that I haven't heard much about that have got me excited. Namely Rainbow Six (the subway video is incredible), Perfect Dark Zero, Thornado, Too Human, and Resident Evil Zero.

i think i need a progressive scan DVD player to use on my widescreeen hdtv, drool

  14. I believe a lot of people will not mind the lack of dvd and may like GCN more for its cheaper price.

  15. #35
i know people will love gamecube 4 it's cheaper price because i do . in i love the games.

i think a lot of people are turned off by GC cause it caters to the children just a little too much, but hey, you like what you like

    What is progressive scan?
You may think that the video you see on TV is simply flashing up images one frame at a time the way a film projector does, but that isn't the case at all. Inside your TV, an electron "gun" fires a beam that lights up a phosphorous coating behind the screen. Rather than painting an image by scanning from top to bottom in one pass, ordinary television sets skip every other line, first drawing in the odd-numbered lines, then going back to the top and scanning the even-numbered lines. This interlaced scanning method is great for broadcasting TV signals because it requires less bandwidth to send picture information. However, between that interlaced image and the filtering that's needed to reduce flicker, the picture resolution is reduced. In contrast, computer monitors and digital television sets can scan the whole screen in one pass. As a rule, such progressive-scan displays flicker less, and the edges, especially those of slow-moving objects, appear more solid and smooth. A progressive-scan DVD player takes advantage of this by sending one full frame of video information at a time rather than splitting the frame into two fields (odd lines first, then even).

Who cares about MPEG 2 PS playback? PS shines when using it for games. So far GCN is the only console to support PS at a locked 60FPS, at HDTV resolutions. Which really makes GCN vs Xbox screen comparisions unfair since just about all GCN games are at 60FPS, PS while XB games are quite the otherwise.
