While Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) drew considerable praise from videogame industry members at last month's E3 Expo in Los Angeles, analysts remain skeptical regarding the long-term prospects of the system.
Scheduled for introduction at the end of the year in Japan and early next year in North America and Europe, analysts believe Sony will face significant competition in the handheld market. Key among their rivals, Nintendo, which plans to introduce their latest handheld platform dubbed "Nintendo DS" at the end of the year.
"I don't think Sony has hard data to back up their sales target of three million units," said Takashi Oka, game analyst at UFJ Tsubasa Securities. "There are many portable games available, but Nintendo has stably dominated the market. It would be very difficult to take away a large share in the market. And there is no guarantee that Sony will really deliver the new product on time" for the year-end holiday shopping season," he added.

Well, I kinda expected that kind of response....though I complain about how the Psp looks compared to the Ds, I knew some would be very skeptical about the psp.

The PSP will get crushed just like every other portable system to compete against Nintendo, its inevitable.

Let's hope. they've taken the console market. But then Sega did too when the GameGear was out.

It'll do better than NGAGE. It may even stick around a while, but i doubt it'll last too long.
What happened to all of NNows Zodiac hype?

I think it will stick around for a while but not dominate. I hope the DS is out for christmas atleast in japan. Sales would be nice. Too bad it could't be out here as well. Or will it?

PSP will hold its ground. I think it will do well enough to maintain sales and continue producing software, unlike the Ngage. Lets not forget, Sony came in and stole the console market straight out from under Nintendo's nose already. Who's to say they cant do it with the handheld. Or at least steal some of the share.

I'll hold you to that.
People make fun and downplay what they are afraid of. Whatever the PSP looks cool the DS looks cool (in that nintedo way) when i play both and see the games then i'll make my desision, but untill then i'll play games like usual.
peace out! :drunk:

I mean that the Psp looks better then the Ds....

I showed it to alot of people...many people said it would be broken in a month and these people are very serious and careful about gaming....not to mention I don't really like the glass design..
I bet you guys were saying the same thing about the PSOne/X (not the new PSX) and the Xbox........
Not really...I even liked the original PSOne and Xbox...but I really thought the Xbox was like Sega with all the original sega games being updated on it at the launch...

I don't think PSP will bomb, it will have a good following, but it will NOT surpass Nintendo, maybe for a few months after launch, but Nintendo will reign. The question will then become will Sony try to strike back with a PSP2 VS GBNext, or sit out, my guess is they will come full out with PSP2 (Unless PSP totally bombs, which I can't see), and then we might see some better chances for Sony, but that's a long ways off.

2 1/2 - 3 hour battery life...
lol...
But hey, you can always BUY the 'battery pack', that's the same size as the PSP... and it attaches to your belt for ULTRA style!

I was thinking the same thing...and if they do come out with a PSP 2 they're definately going to fix the mistakes they make with the first one. That might spell trouble for Nintendo.

And another analyst strikes out at PSP.
While Nintendo and Sony are poised to battle for dominance of the handheld game market this winter, some analysts see little competition in the coming months. According to UFJ Tsubasa Securities analyst Takashi Oka, Nintendo will be able to fend off increasing competition for their GameBoy brand. In fact, Oka-san believes that Sony's PSP will inevitably be used more for movies and music rather than games. "Nintendo's power in creating game software is still going strong. I don't consider the PSP as a game machine so its arrival won't affect Nintendo.''
For reference, Nintendo is set to release their latest handheld platform dubbed "Nintendo DS" this fall in North America and Japan. Sony's PSP is slated to hit Japanese shelves this fall and North America early next year.

the PSP will last in the market longer that expected
1) the casual gamer will be ignorant to the battery life. and buy it.
2) its the playstation name....it brainwashes the consumer to
pull out their wallet and spend mindlessly.
3) the cartridge to CD thing is still in the mindset of people from the
consoles dayz when the N64 was the PSX's bitch.
4) sony will have some killerap and will sell fast...GTA, FF or somethin.

1. Yes, that will happen...
2. Not for a handheld, maybe flock to it because of how it looks...but, they figure out how crappy it pretty much is...
3. Cartridges feel more....Handheldish...but I'd give that to you...but I don't think it will last long...
4. Ds will have GTA and FF too....and the Ds is a Rpg players wet dream...
