Space World 2000 Report

For over a year tiny snippets of information have been leaked about Nintendo's next generation consoles but it was at the Space World Expo, in Japan, that the big N chose to unveil its secrets.

Nintendo Game Cube

After much speculation on what the final name for the next console would be (N2000, Dolphin, Star Cube) the final name will be the Nintendo Game Cube. A press conference was held on the first day of Space World in which all the fantastic and sparkly news, that I am about to bestow on you, was revealed.

Miyamoto was on hand to explain how the Game Cube would function and demonstrate the very unusual looking controller in action. The name is very fitting and completely unsurprising (not that I could have predicted in beforehand) when you consider the names of their previous consoles: Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64. They all have abbreviated names that people use and the one for the latest marvel will, most likely, be N-Cube. The name is very fitting when you see the physical shape of the machine.

It was shown off in five dazzling colors and may eventually be released in them all. Hands up who wants a pink one. Nintendo have finally left the cartridge format behind, skipped over the standard CD and plonked themselves down with a mini DVD which can stores 1.5 gigabytes of information. The controller looks very off-putting at first (and no one outside of Nintendo has yet been allowed to try it) but I have been told it is very comfortable and easy to use. The third prong has been dumped and an extra analogue stick added. The buttons have changed from the diamond shape pioneered by the SNES and now focus on a primary, circular button, surrounded by smaller for buttons. The idea behind it is that you no longer need to feel around to know exactly where your fingers are. The buttons are all different shapes and instantly recognizable.

It goes without saying that the hardware was going to kick ass and the software will eventually be the same but what games can we actually look forward to come on the launch day? The N64 launched with only a few titles, such as Mario 64 and Wave Race. It wasn't until a few months later that Goldneye and Diddy Kong hit the shelves. There were demos of practically all Nintendo's main game series and they looked better than pre-rendered scenes from FMV sequences. Only video footage was shown, the games were not available to play, as Nintendo believe that it would allow their competitors to steal their ideas. Playable demos are likely to appear at next year's E3.
The games included a new Zelda, Metroid, a Star Wars game (possibly the sequel to Rogue Squadron), Wave Race, a Pokemon game dubbed Meowth's Party and a scene involving Luigi in a haunted house. This may have been a scene from the next Mario title or a new game starring a taller, thinner plumber.

The Zelda scene involved the older Link getting on (in battle sense) with Ganondorf.
