A few days ago we broke the news regarding Square Enix’s E3 plans, which included the announcement of three all new games. At the time of writing we had been requested to not divulge the names or giveaway said titles, but we’ve just received new information about one of those three games that comes with no such restrictions. So here we go…

Contrary to what we were originally told, there will be a Square Enix press conference after all, at 11a.m on the Wednesday of the show. This will be a portal for selected media to learn more about one of Square Enix’s currently unannounced games, which we can reveal is an MMO codenamed Rapture, and set for release on PS3 and PC. The game is expected to be unveiled at the Sony press conference on the Tuesday.

While the PC and Xbox 360 have shared a strong software relationship over the last three years, the PC and PS3 have a more open rapport when it comes to online interactivity between the software and the gamers. It seems bizarre given Microsoft’s networking know-how, but the heavy restrictions it puts in place with the way developers can manipulate and engage their audience through Xbox Live makes it difficult for some games to make the most of their potential. Also worthy of note is the fact that the PS3 is free to play online, and it is more flexible in the headsets, keyboards and mice that can be used with it than the Xbox 360.

A classic precedent for all this is Epic Games’ decision to launch Unreal Tournament III on PS3 and PC well ahead of Xbox 360, claiming that Sony’s console better facilitated what they wanted to achieve in access and distribution of user-created Mods.

All that said and done, MMOs have still struggled to find the success on consoles that they have on PCs: even Square Enix own Final Fantasy XI failed to impress. It should be noted, however, that the company has used the term MMO, not MMORPG, which means it could be something totally unexpected.

Maybe just one day. I inquired about that "press conference" and if these isn't one such, the credibility of that site decreases a bit more.

I don't have any faith in SE, I'm not expecting anything nice.

That wouldn't be exactly exclusive, and it would be really old. Also, some are reporting that's fake.

i laughed my ass off reading it though. Seriously, all you need to do is look at wiki.

Development of Rapture:

In August 2005, Square Enix announced they had begun working on a new MMORPG, but neither confirmed nor denied that it is a sequel to Final Fantasy XI, or that it is Final Fantasy-related.[1] Hiromichi Tanaka, producer of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, stated in April 2006 that developers are working to make Rapture a worldwide release.[2] He announced in February 2007 that the game was being developed for the Xbox 360 and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. He also stated that it might also be brought to the PlayStation 3.[3] Square Enix announced at GDC 2008 that the new MMO will indeed target the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows operating system, and hinted that Mac and Linux clients are not out of question. [4] The game will utilize the Square Enix created graphics engine called Crystal Tools.[5] More is expected to be released about this game at the E3 2009 Convention, taking place in Los Angeles June 1-4.

Who knows what the inner workings of deals being made but at most I except it to be a time exclusive if it is announced to be exclusive. My guess is that this rumor is unlikely at best.

The only question is why the ***k are they wasting time on anything that isn't ever going to be/stand up to the likes of a Chrono game, a true Final Fantasy game, or a Vagrant Story.

Seriously, some really backwards **s people at Square-Enix.

However if they are doing an MMO set in the Final Fantasy XI world at least they have some brain, it's a successful game and one of the better MMOs. I'd rather them continue or make a sequel of Final Fantasy XI than make the equivalent of a Last Remnant MMO.

Since their merger with Enix they've had a crippling fear of money and success to the point that it's kind of alarming.

I severely doubt SE would make this exclusive to PS3....I don't care for this "rapture" either way though....Not into MMO.
