3D Realms shuts down (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/3d-realms-runs-out-of-money-closes)

3D Realms has closed because of insufficient funding, placing the future of Duke Nukem Forever once more in doubt.

"It's not a marketing thing. It's true," confirmed 3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler on the official forum - a post since removed, but saved by ShackNews.

Take-Two will retain the rights to Duke Nukem Forever but never agreed to fund development, which has presumably ground to a halt.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two's mouthpiece Alan Lewis.

"In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever."

None of this, we're told in a statement by Apogee Software and Deep Silver, will affect the Duke Nukem Trilogy for PSP and DS.

"Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned," explain the companies.

Duke Nukem Forever, a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D, was first announced in 1997. The game appeared to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel after 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard revealed the project had surged past another milestone last month.
If anything, 3D Realms won't be working on it anymore. I don't think the chances that a good developer will resume their work are high either. At best an alpha version will leak or some average developer will release it who knows when. In any case, abandon hope for the time being.

Sorry for your avatar, Matt :cowboy:

When I heard this I thought that someone like Bethesda should jump in a buy the rights in a similar situation to Fallout, (I hope)

I could see EA pimping this to the Xtream.

Duke Nukem Forever will never die.

No matter how much we might want it to.

I was partially curious, but there's no hype behind Duke Nukem anymore except from hardcore PC gamers. Today's industry will not even care if DNF is cancelled, their chance to add something to the FPS genre has been gone for about 10 years. They should have released it circa 1999 where it still would have been relevant.

This is a good time to post this once again: The DNF list (http://duke.a-13.net/)

Over 12 years in development, what a joke. I feel truly sorry for those who worked hard on it, and I would love to know who is to blame for keeping it in coma for so long and not cutting the life support when they should have.

# Microsoft released 5 consumer-oriented versions of Windows and might release a Vista service pack or two before Duke Nukem Forever hits shelves.

Yeah, the list is incredibly out of date. It would be a lot more impressive / appaling if it was updated.

It's an old pwn, but a great one nonetheless.

I think we all knew deep down that this game would never happen while 3D Realms were at the helm.

World War II and the entire Manhattan Project. Yes, even the complete development of the atomic bomb took less time.

Now thats funny

One of our admins here, Lead, wrote this up:

If all the bits and pieces mentioned in various places (true or not) were put together it would go something like this:

1. George and Scott own equal parts of 3D Realms.

2. DNF taking forever to make costs tons of money.

3. Scott who is arguably the smarter businessman gets tired of this over time and doesn't want to dump his money into it anymore.

4. Scott looks to other things like Radar Group and newly launched Apogee Software LLC and leaves 3D Realms in Georges hands.

5. Scott is still technically a manager at 3D Realms but is effectively done with 3D Realms at that point.

6. Scott is now free to run companies as he sees fit without dealing with a 50% partner.

7. A year or so later George wasn't able to handle it, especially with lack of Scott's personal and financial cooperation.

8. Eventually funds begin to run low.

9. Since Scott is out, and so is money, George drives out to California to show Take 2 the game in an attempt to wow them into funding development to finish DNF.

10. Vague references were made to Take 2 possibly having (verbally) promising money, but didn't deliver.

11. When George requested the $5 million from Take 2 so DNF development could be funded.

12. Take 2 counter-offered with giving 3D Realms $30 million instead.... *IF*3D Realms sells all rights to the Duke IP. (currently Take2's only has publishing rights)

13. George\They refuse this and keep the Duke IP, instead shutting down the company and going on life support.

14. The purpose of not selling the IP is because the Duke IP still has the potential to make money, and it is their trademark. It would be like iD selling the Doom IP.

15. George is said to have previously went to iD Software and Epic in an attempt to make a deal with funding for them, but is turned down.

16. ..was also said to still have plans to contact other companies to make similar requests.

17. A company in a better position to spend $5 million, such as EA or Microsoft are seen as the most likely candidates for possibly investing in saving DNF.

I believe this is what happens when something gets cancelled, you get to see early footage shortly after the news. It looks like a staff member is using it as a portfolio to get another job.

High Inquisitor Human Resources Man: So tell us about the last project you worked on

This Dude: Well I was a model animator for Duke Nukem Forever.

High Inquisitor Human Resources Man: I see, wasn't that in development for over a decade? What all did you do?

This Dude: Well after World of Warcraft came out... nothing.

well it's purely speculation. we'll just have to wait and see:

3D Realms Possibly Bought Out By Microsoft
May 10th, 2009 | Author: Torrence Davis

David Villarreal brought this up the other night before the Warzone and I nearly flipped out. It makes so much sense it’s not even funny. This is purely speculation and not a rumor or fact.

So it begins with Microsoft getting rights to distribut Duke Nukem on Xbox Live. Isn’t it kinda strange that they would put such a classic PC game on Xbox Live? They updated it, added Live support and now every gold user can have a blast from the past online.

On May 6th, 3D Realms closed their doors and their site went down. The site came back up a day later. The funny thing about the timing of the closing of 3D Realms is that it’s less than a month away from E3. What David told me completely blew my mind the other night. He thinks that Microsoft bought 3D Realms and that they are working on Duke Nukem Forever as an exclusive Xbox 360 title to be published by Take Two.

It just seems to make a whole lot of sense. Microsoft loves releasing classic versions of their games on Xbox Live before and sometimes even after an updated version is released. This could be one of Microsoft’s megaton’s at E3. Again, it’s just speculation but it would be really cool to see this happen. I’ve been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever since the game was announced.

It would be a good fit games similar to Duke Forever have done very well on the 360. 5 million to buy an exclusive is pretty good; of course 5 million could just be the start and Duke could be an eternal money pit. (My gut feeling is that Duke will come out PC - 360 exclusive this year :gulp: )

Always bet on Duke!

The game doesn't look all that bad, considering it was nowhere near finished. No matter how ridiculous it is to think that such developer couldn't finish a game after more than a decade.
