They seem to have a pretty valid reason for it though.

its abit of a downer that i can't import games for it. sometimes things take too long to get to australia. now i'm forced to wait. i'd prefer if it were for software other than retail games.

Yeh I guess this makes sense, but its still gay for Aussies. And a few more people I guess.

Does make sense atleast, i wonder if this relates to the importing issues or just piracy as a whole? I mean if their adding another layer of checking does this mean that those Slot 1 flash card based players will be blocked?

My understanding is it is system wide which covers the SD slot as well.

I'm going to go ahead and be the first to say "lame"
i wonder if this applies retroactively to original DS games. I'd hate to buy a DSi in the US and be unable to play my Ouendan and Band Bros. I doubt that'll happen though, since I don't think original DS games were region-coded.

No, applies only to DSi specific softwares. All legacy DS games will still be region free.

I don't think its that bad since they have a good reason I suppose. At least DS games are still region-free and its just DSI-specific titles that are region-locked. Though I can't say for sure if this will suck or not in the future, it all depends on what these DSi-specific titles will be.

Plus you could still use your DS (Lite or fat) that I imagine you have now. Unless youre pretending to play Ouendan and Band Bros. But if you were doing that then you wouldnt have to worry about if the games work or not :pinky:

Wired.com: Is Nintendo going to introduce retail cartridge software that's only playable on the DSi?
Dunaway: There are no plans, no announcements right now. But certainly, as we've historically done, you’ll see us do interesting things with software to take advantage of the hardware capabilities. As Mr. Iwata talked about last night, this new memo pad is one of the cool technologies. It's not necessarily a game, but it certainly enables people to act as an animator and use their photographs in an interesting and entertaining way.
Wired.com: So right now, the only DSi-only software is downloadable.
Dunaway: Right, the Brain Age games, etc.
Wired.com: Will that be region-locked? Can I buy a U.S. DSi and access the software that Japanese consumers can download?
Dunaway: I believe that just as you can currently buy a DS in Japan and use it here in the U.S., that you should be able to do that with DSi.
it may not be as bad as it first sounded. seems like it's just the service thats region locked. meaning you can't download something from a region's service unless you are actually in that region. at least that's what it sounds like.
You also have to take into account that Cammie Dunaway has a history of not really knowing what the fuck she's talking about.

yeah. that's why i've been using the terms 'seems' and 'sounds like' instead of 'yay' or 'thank the lord'.
