Wow, WMV? I really hope it supports the .wmv so that I don't have to rename my files, but in any case it's huge news as I never expected it - despite Blu-ray supporting VC-1 as standard. To me particularly it's more important than DivX, but we're getting both anyway

Does this mean I can play discs with .avi files on in my PS3?

Also, what is bitmapping? I noticed it a while back when looking through some settings.

i wish support subtitle file with divx
(xbox360 did not support subtitle file :( )I wouldn't hold my breath on that to be honest. Getting DivX on systems that are not meant to be useful to, er, pirates, is a lot already.

it would be great to be able to use subtitles but i am with VGA on this.

ps.

i have read somwhere long time ago that there will be new one every month starting september!
ehh it was with those news that pes2008 is 3*better on ps3 i think :)

Luis

It's also a great excuse to install a bigger (and somewhat faster) internal HDD or simply get an external HDD to store all the video content. I also hope the DLNA servers are upgraded so that they give this native support and perform better as there won't be a need to transcode WMV and DivX.

So, who here can help me with finding the perfect converter for my needs:

- RIP my DVD collection into something with the same video and the same DTS/DD 5.1 sound + subtitles.

Anyone? Harddrive space is not an issue, however, a DVD-rip shouldn't be more than the original.

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item89434/Update-features-(ver-2-10)/

Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 2.10.

An update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 2.10 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 2.10, you will need a minimum 120Mb of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

The PLAYSTATION 3 system software version 2.10 update includes the following:

* Voice Changer

http://tinyimg.us/i/cqs1197898160f.jpg

The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat. Visit the Voice Changer guide in Help & Support under PS3 at eu.playstation.com for more details.

Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

Other new or revised features in version 2.10

Music

* You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.

Video

* DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played. *
* Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. **
* [BD Data Utility] has been added. ***

*- To play VC-1 (WMV) format files, you must go to Settings > [System Settings] and set [Enable WMA Playback].
- Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. - Files that are 2GB or more cannot be played.
** You may now be able to use several additional features such as playback of two videos at the same time with Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray Discs. The available features vary depending on the disc.
*** The management data that is used by the Blu-ray Disc is saved.

Note:

* This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
* The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PLAYSTATION 3. Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
* Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.

Tversity should do pass-through for any codec that is supported by the media player... I still believe anyone using MKV files for HD content will have to transcode, but I will check it out and confirm.

Does the PS3 already support Xvid? Or is that coming as well? Almost all of my media is on Xvid nowadays.

But nevertheless this is still great news! Sure makes the PS3 more attractive as a media station.

Marjoh
12-17-2007, 06:30 PM
belgarn, did you encode those videos with Xvid yourself? If not, maybe the system is just showing Xvid as oppose to Divx (or vise versa)?

Anyway, we won't know for sure till tomorrow. And hopefully if it does support subtitles, it supports tags (code, what ever you want to call it) as well. So I don't have to edit (I forget sometimes). Our Divx capable DVD player doesn't, and it sometimes gets annoying.

This is great for missed TV episodes, as well. Those stream from the official site just don't cut it for me.

good article about Blu-ray Profile

-The basic Profile 1.0 (also known as the Grace Period Profile) available on all Blu-ray models released before November 1st, 2007 includes neither a secondary video decoder nor an internet connection.

-Profile 1.1 (also called the Final Standard Profile or "Bonus View") adds decoders for secondary PiP video and audio, plus 256 MB of local storage capability.

-Finally, Profile 2.0 (or "BD-Live") includes those secondary video and audio decoders, a larger 1 GB of local storage capability, and an internet connection.

I honestly didn't think Sony would do it since they are competing directly with Microsoft, but WMV is what I always wanted since every site I view (starting with Game Trailers and IGN) seems to either support it or Quick Time. I guess it makes perfect since, though, since Sony is trying to get people away from the PC. This is awesome news! I didn't think we would receive another upgrade until around early January - especially considering Sony being a bit late with the 2.0 update.

All my AVIs are working great. The subs don't work, but I have them in seperate folders as required with most Divx players. So not sure if PS3 requires them in the same folder and the AVI, although, there was no sub option in the PS3 menu when playing the avi.

Stage6.com does not work. Perhaps a plugin on their side.

Does anyone else notice how sharp and vivid everything looks now?

This system is a Tech BARGAIN!. Can't believe what they give us for the price they charge.

Edit:

Can anyone with cam, or headset add me, I want to test out the new voice changer.

Edit 2:

Joox.net works fine when you download a movie. Downloads (even backround) and you can play from the PS3. Awesome!

Edit 3:

Movie thumbnails are animated again, even when in folders.

The divx playback seems more limited then the 360's at the moment.

I was hoping it would be more so because I have some One Piece episodes that wouldn't work with the new update on the 360 and even more episodes that don't work on the PS3.

This is great. Videos looks better than our Divx DVD player. Playback is a lot smoother (even when playing from a disc), so this is great for watching [hard encoded] subtitled videos. So you just tap the L2 button twice to skip a few frames back (admit it, you guys missed reading a few words from time to time).

It doesn't seem to support .srt (same folder, same name). But I'm going to try other format. But don't hold your breath, as there is no subtitle option on the playback menu.

Hey guys, I just tried a certain anime series, and while some episodes works, many don't (blank or error message). But by unpacking the bitstream (moitah.net), they worked flawessly. It takes about 10-20 seconds to unpack each file, so it maybe a bit of a hustle for some.

And I hate Sony for releasing the update too soon and keeping me up. They should've waited a few hours so I could've some sleep by now. LOL Well later, I'm going to sleep.

Some of my older WMV files won't play but more recent ones do, I even checked some 1080p ones and they work. Some DivX files work (mostly recent ones and HD ones) while others don't. Oddly enough, stage6 videos don't work, or at least the ones I used. It recognizes both .avi and .divx. There doesn't seem to be any kind of subtitle support right now. In any case, I'm of course happier than yesterday :)

I love the new Earth music visualizer  What other stealth updates must have been introduced?

EDIT: BD/DVD dynamic range control is new as well, seems like a setting to improve hearing dialogue in low volume channels. And video thumbnails do work inside folders. PS2 mixed software/hardware BC keeps improving.

But you sadly need PSP FW 3.80 for it (no, there's no spanish/french version yet). I am still stuck with 3.71 and cannot upgrade yet to try it.

I hope Sony adds divx to the PSP too (it should be able to do it), that would be cool.

because once it's in your PS3 you can turn your Ps3 on remotely and play the game on the go on your PSP ;)

Why would I want to play it on a 3 inch screen (or whatever it is) when I can play it on a large screen?

I'm just being difficult now :-D

i agree.

Especially when ps3 games are best be played at 720p/1080p res screen.

remote play is useless when playing high def games. But its cool for playing ps1 games and wathcing divx

feature = feature

they are just additional software that has been added true software modification, from sony or outside sony.. the way they add the feature is just the same.

Kiwi
12-18-2007, 06:49 PM
Either way you look at it, it's not a feature that Microsoft included themselves, it was something you had to do yourself.

Of course, not everybody will know that they can mod their console to do other things, and even some people who do know will be scared of screwing their console up. So the amount of people who it would've been pretty limited.

With a mod, you could do what the hell you wanted. You could probably turn the console into a toaster, but that doesn't mean that it's a feature that should be included as standard.

I know you're just gonna carry on anyway, so I'm gonna stop.....

Did you ever try it?

I do not think so... My PS2 is "sploited" (memory card hack with launchelf as bootloader) yet playing divx files is more of a bitch than playing backups (no kidding)

You need to first put in a pressed cd/dvd to make the PS2 think it is legit and then you swaptrick (cogswap with a knife or whatever) in your moviedisc... And it does not always work and is very crashhappy (I didn't try it recently, maybe there's a new version for the player, but still it sucked back then).

Same goes for the Xbox1 (afaik, you need to overwrite the old bootloader etc... which is not that easy).

We are talking native support, which is a new one and I really like it.

And, if you want to nitpick, the PS3 had Divx, Xvid and even Real Media (and all other media MPlayer and VLC play) from the start via Linux...

But since talking to you makes as much sense as talking to a brick wall, I will leave it at that!

You can also play PS1 games remotely through any WiFi spot using your PS3<->PSP

"Put FFVII disc in PS3"
"Leave"
"Turn on PS3 remotely at your University Starbucks"
"Play some FFVII on your PSP"Yay!

But you sadly need PSP FW 3.80 for it (no, there's no spanish/french version yet). I am still stuck with 3.71 and cannot upgrade yet to try it.I upgraded mine to 3.80 a few hours ago.

So you should use Xbox to watch DivX if you own both X2 and PS3. Case closed.

Personally would like more scaling options with the DivX video, on my measle SD TV the image goes off the screen on both sides on anamorphic movies. And I'd actually pay for options to reduce the level of blockiness, change brightness/contrast and so on.

Otherwise loving the divx/xvid support.

Though the new visualizer is cool, it isn't for music. That's a damn screen saver, it in no way reacts to the music being played. They need something more milkdrop like, but Sony has always sucked at music visualizers. The original one only has like 4-5 scenes which are somewhat decent, but that gets extremely repetitive. Milkdrop has thousands of scenes. perhaps they need to shoot ryan geiss (creator of milkdrop... best visualizer ever) an e-mail, hell, he works for nvidia now, so sony already has ties to him to an extent.

AVI is just a container. The actual video within an AVI-file can be encoded in different formats and some formats may not play. It's a bit like having a DVD-disc. Even though the your computer can read a DVD-disc, it might not be able to read and understand the content.

I doubt that... As 3.11 is "only" a hacked version of MSs WMV codec.

I have a really big collection of videos on my HDD (most, if not all are XVID, some mkv and MP4s) and now (without transcoding), 95% of all of my SD material works (HD works only in MP4 form but not in MKV, but I seem to have a directshow problem ATM), only some don't work.

I hope, Sony adds mkv support (I mean, it also is just a container, and open source too!) and the OGG stuff. That would then seal the deal for me completely.

Has anyone of you tested a "Buffalo Linkstation Live"? I am thinking of buying one for XMas (it's a DLNA enabled NAS HDD)

Some files didn't play on the PC while being streamed to the PS3, so i put those exact files on a storage device and plugged it into the PS3. To my surprise, all of them played fine on the PS3. I'm thinking it has something to do with the media player on the PC unable able to recognize some of the files and as a result, is causing the PS3 not to see them as a supported file.

Dr. Tenma is a Japanese brain surgeon working in Germany. He has it all: incredible medical skills, a great job, and a beautiful fiancée who also happens to be the daughter of the hospital's director.

One day he is ordered to forgo operating on a critically injured man in favor of a more illustrious patient. Disillusioned by the hospital's politics, he decides from then on that he will do what he thinks is right, regardless of politics.

Some time later, a young boy and his twin sister are brought in. The boy has a bullet in his head and requires an operation that Dr. Tenma knows only he is capable of performing successfully. Just as Dr. Tenma is about to begin the procedure, the mayor is rushed into the hospital and the director instructs Dr. Tenma to leave the boy to operate on the critically ill mayor. Dr. Tenma decides that he will do what is right and go ahead with the boy's operation.

The young boy's operation ends in success but the surgeons operating on the politician fail. As a result, Dr. Tenma is passed over for a promotion and his fiancée calls off their engagement.

Soon after this incident, strange murders begin to occur, all of which benefit Dr. Tenma greatly. As a result, he becomes the prime suspect although the police have no evidence against him. It seems that the boy whose life he saved is heavily involved in it somehow and that there is much more to him than meets the eye.

but it's long and slow paced... so not for everybody.
there are no robots and stuff but the mood is just like nothing else...

and details are great

Much of my stuff (especially Top Gear, from Season 1 onwards :D) is pretty old too, yet it still works w/o any problems.

^^Nope, but I still feel an obligation to keep everyone on track since I am staff, though it isn't part of my job ;)

I think I've found another small change. When playing a PS2 game and pressing the PS button, there's a "Restart game" option. Was that there before?

By the way, since PS1 games can be played remotely, does that mean it won't sign out when playing PS1 games?

Also, I've heard that some Blu-ray movies now have some PS3 code and not only you don't sign out, but it shows what movie you're watching. Namely Spiderman 3 and Superbad. Can anyone confirm this? I might check later whether it will only keep signed in with a handful of movies or if it'll remain signed in when playing movies.

EDIT: It signs out when playing 300, so I guess it's limited to some movies.

Maybe only movies with the "PLAYSTATION(R)3 COMPATIBLE" sticker on the front?

I'll have to see if I sign out, but I did notice that when I put Superbad in a little image came up where the blue disc icon is, and it says "Superbad-Blu Ray" next to it. Pretty nifty I suppose

Try having something downloading in the background and observe if it ends up finishing the download, for instance.

The restart option was not there before 2.10

But Spider-Man 3 already showed what disc was inserted, it rented it some weeks ago and was "astonished"^^ as well with the fast forward option, that was really disturbing :D

You're still signed in during remote play, I tested FF7 yesterday.

BREAKiNG NEWS: PS3 Debug Firmware 2.15 leaked!

A bit of unexpected news on this LEAP YEAR DAY indeed.. a nice guy has leaked PS3 Debug Firmware 2.15 today! A picture of it on my TEST console is below, and also there is an unpacked FileList of it for those interested. It adds a new "vm" folder to the PS3 HDD among other things, but we have yet to thoroughly look through it.

This is VERY cool news mainly because (as we all know) even the retail PS3 Firmware 2.15 isn't available yet from Sony!

For other PS3 Devs to examine, we will be adding the 2.15 Firmware to our PS3 Downloads this weekend as it's a bit sizeable weighing in RAR'd at 103 MB (108,852,452 bytes).

But there will be soon. He'll just have to look through the FW first, then we'll know what they've changed.
