you know...

I was just thinking about how interesting and telling it is that Nintendo sent out the review copies so early.... and without any NDA deadlines...

In the industry... game companies sometimes don't send the review copies out for games that aren't super great because they don't want a lot of negative press to stop the impulse shoppers....

and then there is the opposite where they send them out way in advance because they know what they are shipping out is freaking awesome...

the only difference is that usually you would still see NDA......cannot post your review until...... clauses attached to the review copies.

I think Nintendo is just that confident with this one... and that makes me happy.

^well...the fact that the orange box is in their....twice....for PC and 360 just bothers the hell out of me though.....

but yea..... I can see this one staying up their.....I don't see how many reviewers with a .somthing system can give it below a 9.5 based on my short time with the game and the acclaim its getting so far... so who knows..... could become reviews choice as one of the best games of all time.

Ah, but it should. Orange Box has 5 games, all of which are like 9/10 quality or better, for the price of one game. Therefore, Orange box = 45/10.

Hmm. I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet. The game is scoring very well indeed, but I expect the average to drop a bit over the next couple weeks. Often I've kept an eye on a game, just to see how it's doing, and watched averages slowly dwindle as more reviews come in. I don't expect the average to drop by a whole lot, perhaps a percentage point or two, but this seems to be the trend, at least from my personal experience.

I'm getting the game either way. I've had it reserved for a long time. I'm just curious as to how well it does in the reviews, so I'm watching it. If it can manage to stay about where it is however, top-ten for sure. It looks like it just has to average better than 95.6% to get in.

That's pretty interesting news, but for it to take the throne of Ocarina of Time it has to do a lot in my opinion. OoT was just epic and I still enjoy playing through it every time I play. I get that same feeling from Mario 64, but not as high as OoT. If this game gives me that same feeling I think I may be overwhelmed by Nintendo.

maybe instead we can call them best of their genres....

honestly I don't know if a game is ever going to dethrone ocarina of time from "the best games of all time."

and without those the average is 9.7

the gamerankings average though doesn't include a couple of those because I guess they just don't take certain peoples reviews.....and some of the ones they take they don't include in the average unless they have one hundred reviews or something...... I can't remember.

Thats a fine average for a not-so-average game. Its very close to beating zelda on gamerankings, and thats no easy task. Something tells me Im gonna bust a nut the second I start playing this game.

yuk.... I am not being fanboyish when I say this ...but I don't like this reviewers opinion of the things he calls out as negatives....

9 is way too low based on what I have seen and played.... still good....but less than what it actually deserves.

I just honestly don't understand the grips against the added bonus feature of letting somebody else control the star pointer..... it doesn't make any sense to call it tacked on co-op....that wasn't the point of it.... it was to create a more engaging way for a second player to watch a freind play a single player game... dumb complaint in my opinion,

way to go games daily....lol...you screwed up my hopes of seeing a game top ocarina temporarily. with this by itself added to game rankings it would drop to a 96.81333333333333

and again.... I am not saying a 9 is a bad score.....its just if you read their overly negative and seemingly biased review...their gripes are way unjustified...

I mean...they actually go as far as saying the Wii-mote is pointless and that a normal gaming controller would be better because..... “Aiming the Wii-mote at the screen vacuums up the star bits, but that’s about it — disappointing”

I don't want to spoil anything, but lets just say that its used WAY more than just that.... it's almost like they didn't play the game to see how the Wii-mote is actually used in unique ways.

That feeling still makes me warm inside.

The scores are surpassing what I could have hoped for.

@Advocate- his complaint reminds me of Jet Force Gemini, being the little robot as a second player and basically being able to only aim and shoot. I actually liked it. It was more fun than watching but didn't become a pain as some co-op modes.

I never thought I'd see this game come near Zelda OoT...I can't believe it. Basically with what...2 more reviews of 97.7 or higher it can become #1...I thought this game might be about a 91.5 average or so, tops. I didn't think it would become #2!

Well I've played a little more of the game and I've barely scratched the surface to what I may come up. I'm like 10 stars into the game and it is truely a great game, but I'll definitely be disappointed to see my beloved Ocarina of Time fall to this title. Don't get me wrong I love Galaxy, but I don't think it's anywhere near a better game than Ocarina of Time once was and still is today.

I would give it about a 9.... that's a complement on the graphics.

I am not sure what they gave Metroid Prime 3 or Zelda though. Even if they rated the graphics higher in those games, there could also be the factor of different reviewers.

This weekend I am going to play this game till my eyes bleed.

sound in my opinion is way good......and graphics are way better than prime....

not in geometric detail.... but in everything else... (nobody beats Retros in geometric detail design imo).

pretty much though its because back then there weren't as many people reviewing it and there were also a lot less reviewers that used 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 based reviewing systems..... escepcially the ones that give out just 1,2,3,4,5....... becuase those guys are abviously going to give it all 5/5s...

Oh, definitely. It was heralded as the "video game of the century", after all. Still, comparing the two games and their scores is sort of like comparing bars of gold. Regardless of which is shinier, they're both solid gold.

What I think is funny though are gamerankings viewer rankings...they suck horribly....the overall numbers that is....

I mean.... Mass Effect is at 18 right now when it's not even out yet....and Mario Galaxy is at 174....lol....

Well, it's fallen a tiny bit. It's still tied with Ocarina of Time and still remains at number one, but it went from it's all-time high of 97.9% down to 97.6%. While it's a fraction of a percent, it indicates a shift in direction from its previous upward trend. Even if it doesn't decline much farther, it might dip back under OoT or even fall in next to Metroid Prime, should this trend continue.

Does it even matter? Well, no, but we had a thread about it, so.... :shrug:

That's impressive. Not only does Nintendo have all of the top 3 games of all time, but all 3 of them are on different Nintendo Consoles and each one represents one of Nintendo's Big 3 franchises.

The thing of it is, no matter which console you back, you kinda have to give Nintendo credit for their franchises. They've been really popular, successful, and outstanding for a couple decades now. It's really no wonder that Nintendo's IPs dominate the top three. Even more, two of those top three (Ocarina of Time and Metroid Prime) were available on the console that allegedly "lost" their respective hardware generations, so even if they didn't push as many systems as the other guys at least they had some of the most outstanding software in the history of gaming. If you want the greatest games around, you have to own Nintendo hardware.

I think I know why. All the crappy sites are just now getting they're reviews up, and they're the ones that use 10-point scales with no partial points, so it's gotten a few 90&#37;'s, bringing the average down.

Some, levels that have hidden stars will have a yellow question mark over them.

I believe that as long as there isn't that crown icon displayed for that level that there are still stars remaining to be found there. I'm at just fifty-nine stars at the moment, so I can't say for sure, but I read somewhere that the main levels have three normal stars, two comet stars, and one hidden star (indicated with the question mark) plus two of them have a green star. The third green star is in Buoy Base, and is the exception, the one green star outside the main levels. The levels you open from the ? Blocks floating on the map don't have hidden stars at all, or comet stars, and with the exception of Buoy Base having the additional green star they all have but the one single star.

Yes. That's still awesome, of course. Ocarina of Time was amazing anyway, but being better than every single game ever made save just one is still terrific. Heck OoT came out nine years ago and it waited that entire time to even find a contender to challenge its dominance at the number one spot. I guess that makes Galaxy the best video game of the past nine years, and second-best in history.

insane man. I still found Super Mario 64 to be a superior game this Galaxy, but it's still a great title with that said. I'm like 54 stars into the game. =)

One of the things I like about Galaxy is it goes back to the classic 2D roots for some gameplay elements, namely the power-ups. In Super Mario 64 you had a few caps, which were neat at the time but wasn't quite the same as grabbing a fire flower, tanuki suit, or hammer bros. suit. In Super Mario Sunshine you had Fluud, and a gadget you strap onto your back completely missed the feel and spirit of Mario games completely. Galaxy went back to the power ups, with fire flowers, ice flowers, and suits including the bee and boo suits; a shift I strongly approve of. It just feels more Mario-ish.

Additionally, they brought back several classic themes, including some from Super Mario Bros. 3, again which I highly approve of. Paired with the return of the Doomship theme is the appearance of a fleet of airships, not quite like the Doomships but the closest I've seen since, which I again approve of. In SMB3, Bowser had fleets of airborne Doomships, naval ships, tanks, smaller airships, and fortresses all over the place; the most powerful he has ever been, and Galaxy gives him similar military might again.

It just feels like the Super Mario Bros. 3 of the 3D Mario games, and that's a great thing.

^Thats the feeling I got, too. I laughed out loud when i heard the theme in the Sweet Sweet Galaxy. As much as I love all the SMB3 similarities, I would love them to make an actual 3D version of SMB3. Not exactly the same, but with levels and worlds and suits and all that jazz. The only thing stopping Galaxy from being a 3d SMB3 is the fact that its in space.

But its not like im complaining. I love the 'old meets new' in Galaxy and have more or less decided its my 4th favorite game of all time after Melee, Yoshi's Island, then SMB3 (in that order).

my gripe with the power ups is they shouldn't be only for a limited time. You shouldn't lose your power ups unless you are hit by an enemy in my opinion because I think it's stupid how you can only have those power ups for a limited time.

I also found the old school elements from past games very cool of Nintendo to be integrated into this title. The game is a AAA title of course, but I still have a few issues that I don't really like about it. Everyone does I like to think in some form or another.

Also I liked the hat idea from Mario 64 because I found it unique and very Mario-ish.
