SONY Corp has agreed to sell its production facilities for the powerful computer chip at the heart of its struggling PlayStation 3 game console to rival Toshiba Corp.

The deal, reportedly worth over $US1 billion ($1.12 billion), is part of Sony's efforts to refocus on its core electronics business and staunch losses from the PS3 in the face of fierce competition from Nintendo's Wii.

The two companies will set up a joint venture to produce high-performance semiconductors under the basic deal, which they hope to finalise by next March.

No price tag was revealed although the Nikkei business daily reported earlier that the total deal was worth an estimated ¥130 billion ($1.24 billion).

“We haven't confirmed the precise asset value,” said Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa.

Under its first foreign boss Howard Stringer, Sony is seeking to shed non-core assets and revive its mainstay electronics business, concentrating on products such as flat-panel televisions and digital cameras which are selling well.

The electronics giant invested heavily in developing the “Cell” microprocessor - the brains inside the PS3.

But it is struggling to make a profit from the console in the face of fierce competition from Nintendo, with Sony's game unit deep in the red.

Although the company will remain involved in the development of the Cell, it decided to sell the production lines to Toshiba to avoid further heavy investment that analysts say is needed to reduce the production costs.

“The problem for the PlayStation 3 is that the production cost is too high,” Tatsuya Mizuno, an analyst at Fitch Ratings, said.

“It is difficult to maintain a high price because of the competition.

"That means it is difficult for them to get an adequate return on their investment.”

Sony refuses to say exactly how much it has spent on the PS3 but admits that it will initially lose money on each console after spending hundreds of millions of dollars on new technologies such as the Cell processor.

For Toshiba, which is enjoying soaring profits on the back of strong sales of memory chips used in music players such as Apple's iPod, the deal means that it will expand its semiconductor business and secure orders of chips for the PS3.

Toshiba, along with IBM, helped to develop the Cell processor, which Sony says is 40 times faster than the chip that runs the PlayStation 2.

But elsewhere Sony and Toshiba are arch-rivals, waging a fierce war to set the industry standard in high-definition DVD.

Sony will also sell Toshiba its operations for the RSX graphic processor used in the PS3.

With sales of the console struggling, Sony needs to reduce losses from the game division to a manageable level, said Osamu Hirose, analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Centre.

“In this context, the spin-off of the chip business, which requires continued and heavy investment, is positive for Sony,” he said.

Earlier this month, Sony cut the price of the PS3 in Japan and Europe as it tries to catch up with Nintendo, a move that analysts said would make it harder for Sony to turn a profit from the console.

i don't think this should be closed. it highlights something that's been going on for well over a year now. Capcon (good news... for some lol) and then NEGATIVITY! next time we get some really good news watch what happens directly after. watch what happens when RAC is released

Wow, that headline is sensationalist at best.

This isn't new though, in fact a thread about the same thing was closed some time ago.... Furthermore while true in some aspects the author goes out of his way to make the facts in to something that fits his FUD/bash Sony agenda.

the information doesn't interest me, it's the approach that i think merits discussion

O...M...G...

So Toshiba is Sony's rival, even though they help develop the Cell!?!?

well you could argue that Toshiba will stay with HD-DVD until they have made some of their investment back. perhaps this deal will ease their pockets a little. Toshiba have also said that they are working on a Cell PC...

Selling it for less, according to these geniuses with kickass economics degrees, will mean they make less profit from the item being sold?

Stop the presses.

I feel like I'm watching Fox News, and Barack Obama is the PS3. I don't understand how people can follow news sites when they do things like this. It's possible to glean real facts from the treacle, but why bother?

The meta-data about hardware performance and specifications may have been hard to follow, but I miss those days. At least I knew that I was reading things that had to be peer-reviewed prior to publishing.

Sony doesn't do this because of Wii's success, but because they benefit from doing this anyway. That's what so wrong with the headline: it doesn't matter what happens outside Sony, that isn't going to make this deal less interesting for them.

Either lock this thread or use a different, non-sensationalist source.

They clearly don't know what they talk about. Is it really necessary to have this floating around this forum? The headline is way out of proportions...

there is more than one way to approach a conversation you know. it's the sensationalism that i thought would be interesting to discuss. i just thought it would be an interesting diversion from discussing games, especially when information is so sparse at the moment, but if no-one wants to enter into a conversation about the machinations of the net, then by all means lock this thread

I'm not sure we all are willing to discuss sensationalism once again in this board, you know.

Isn't this kind of like when a company sells its building to someone else and then leases it back? They no longer have the bills associated with the maintenance of the building and now are saving money by leasing the building. Although a different industry here, I think it may be the same general idea.

OMG its the end of sony forever lolololollolololololololololo1o1o1o1o1o1o1o1o1 fanboyfanboyfanboyfanboyfanboyfanboyfanboyghey

Seriously though, just because Sony is selling Cell doesnt mean its they are afraid of the Wii's success, just means that they are aware of it and realize they need to take steps.

yep it's a good and sensible deal. Sony retain 40% while Toshiba get 60%

Seriously though, just because Sony is selling Cell doesnt mean its they are afraid of the Wii's success, just means that they are aware of it and realize they need to take steps. What this means is that Sony is doing it because they're benefiting from it, be it reducing losses or obtaining some money from this somehow. Regardless of whatever you can think of, they're going to do it in the first place because it's just better for them that way. No company in their right mind wouldn't consider doing something to minimize losses if they can.

The title is a desperate call for attention by the author.

Its completely NOT related to what is the real NEWS.

Sony is making a business move to improve profitability. If its more financially feasible to get someone else to produce the the Cell chips than why take on the burden yourself. Sony are said to have raised $256 Million out of this outsourcing move. Its not like they have sold off the patents to Toshiba -which would be a disaster & a kick in the nuts for any future of Cell based PS4.
It's called Business Re-Engineering & one that should happen if a company is to continuously evolve & remain profitable. A business model cannot be sustained for ever. It needs to evolve with time like everything else. Stringer is doing what he was called in to do - BRAVO ! :thumbl:

-Sony Forks Over Chip Production To Toshiba - ...The sale allows Sony to pass on the heavy cost of microprocessor development to Toshiba, Japan’s largest microchip maker. It could possibly lower Sony's procurement costs for Cell chips if Toshiba can reap production efficiencies from commercializing the chips in a broader range of applications. Sony will also be able to invest the proceeds of the sale to bolster its world-leading position in image-processing chips for its digital cameras and cell phones.
