Straight from Mark Rein (http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=574996)

Folks,

I checked with Steve Polge and he said that YES we are supporting keyboard and mouse in Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3. He is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side. We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not.

I think you guys are going to love UT3!

More details to come later.

Wow, didn't expect them to implement the kb/mouse combo on PS3 at all, great news :)

Now they don't need to hold back with the game speed at all. Although it will assumingly fit to the controller scheme, aka using the sixaxis and controller-only servers slows the game speed down a bit.

But this could mean mixed PS3/PC servers. I mean, why not? The client side code should run the same on PC and PS3.

EDIT: If they would have mixed PC/PS3 servers they wouldn't even need to think about this so not gonna happen
We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not.

You can't compete with a controller to KB/mouse, end of story :)

as for the point of mixed servers... i woudnt count on it. mark rein also said the game speed is higher on pc compared to consoles, so they would have to altar one version during mixed matches. i dont see it as being likely.

From the same forums:

Cross platform play isn't decided yet. Please keep this thread about keyboard and mouse for PS3. There are other threads on cross platform.

To think about it you need to lock the framerate for consoles but user can upgrade the PC into a monster driving 200FPS with 1920*1080 resolution, so it would be a bit unfair for PS3 gamers in mixed play. All twitch FPS's are easier to master with better framerate.

I just can't see why optional support of PC peripherals can possibly be a bad thing.

PS3 UT3 to have cross platform play

According to Mark Rein from Epic Games, the PC and PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament 3 have the possibility of being enabled for cross platform play.

To what extent this will be included, still remains a mystery.

Now UT3 makes for a complete experience, including mouse and keyboard support thanks to the beautifully crafted FragFx. PSU can't wait to see the mayhem of PS3 players and PC players duking it out this coming November, however it is implemented.

Cross platform play would be a step in the right direction for 3rd party titles.
Since most of the 3rd party titles are not being "enhanced" on specific platforms it would be good to have cross platform online play. I doubt we will ever see 360 & PS3 cross platform, but the PC is plausible...

Rapture

forget the balance issues for the moment, mark rein already stated the pc version has a higher gamespeed setting than the consoles.

clearly you cant play cross platform with the gamespeed different, so which will change? i would assume the ps3 version would be bumped to the pc during cross with the general idea you shouldnt bother unless you've crazy good or using kb/m - but maybe not?

uhm, slashshrug?

It says 'possibility' of cross platform play on that article btw. I hope the PS3 gets it, it'd be a good feature of the PS3 to have games starting to support cross platform stuff, especially with the PC.

Gamercard’ spotted in UT3 demo – is this PS3’s answer to the 360’s Gamertag?

During a playable demo of Unreal Tournament III at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, we spotted something very interesting on the game’s menu system. It’s called Gamercard and it doesn’t seem too unlikely a possibility that this will turn out to be a unique player identity system, not entirely dissimilar to the Xbox 360’s Gamertag system that manages player stats and achievements.

We quizzed Epic’s Mark Rein about and he did little to dispel our assumptions saying quickly “Oops, you shouldn’t have seen that”. We would have liked to grabbed a pic, and were little deterred by the venue’s strict no camera phone policy and dodgy lighting, however Mark Rein’s rapid covering of the projector with his hand put pay to that cunning idea.

Needless to say, we have little to go on. It is accessed with the Triangle button if that makes any difference to you. It is also anyone’s guess whether this is a future Sony project that will cover the whole of the PlayStation Network or whether it is simply a feature of UT3. But I’m betting that the secrecy surrounding it indicates a new PS3 feature. More news as we get it.

Unreal Tournament 3 to support Blu-ray's extra room? ;)

Speaking at this year’s Edinburgh Interactive Festival, VP of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360 might have to get cut down in order to cope with the limitations of the console's hardware. Answering a question from the crowd about whether disc size would be a problem with an Xbox 360 port, he stated that “We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version...Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom. And what's really cool is if you think forward and think about what we've done in the past with UT. We had UT 2003 and then we had UT 2004, which was everything in UT 2003 plus a whole bunch of great mod stuff that we went out and purchased from mod makers.”

"If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."

If the DVD format is already showing its age, it's bad news for Microsoft. Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray has had its detractors, but if multiplatform titles are going to be bigger and better on the PS3, then Sony’s going to be able to start justifying the cost of its more expensive hardware. This will doubly be the case if it's a big franchise like Unreal Tournament from Epic. It's especially worrying given that these are still fairly early days in this console cycle. If it's a problem over the next year, what's it going to be like four or five years down the line?Source (http://xboxer.tv/2007/08/eif_2007_xbox_360_unreal_tourn.html)

Pfft, coming from Mark Rein.
When the game is about to come out on X360 he'll say:

"Thanks to our compression technology that we developed with the super duper sexy team of Microsoft, we can now have MORE maps than the PS3 version so you should now commence buying our game on X360."

If this becomes a trend: yes. UT3 on its own won't make a big difference, but if all the major multiplatform games start being better on PS3, Sony will obviously have a huge advantage.

Newboi
08-15-2007, 06:48 PM
This doesn't make since though. The PC version is going to ship on a DVD too so I'm not exactly seeing what's going on here....so will the PC version ship on multiple DVDs?

It's not like they aren't gonna offer the maps as downloadable content if they don't make it on the disc for the 360. I don't see much news here.

Nailing the facts: Unreal Tournament III's 'personality' aspect clarified (http://ps3.qj.net/Nailing-the-facts-Unreal-Tournament-III-s-personality-aspect-clarified/pg/49/aid/100195)

And yet again, this development may have already reached the ears of the Unreal Tournament-faithful, but we'll be attempting to update the uninformed still waiting for Unreal Tournament III (Mac, PlayStation 3, Windows PC on DVD, Xbox 360). In a past interview with Game Informer, Epic Games' lead producer Jeff Morris said, "Your [AI] teammates are individuals, with their own personalities."

Nailing the facts: Unreal Tournament III's 'personality' aspect clarified - Image 1

And ever since, some UT fans have been whispering about the possible return of a few memorable bot "personalities" from Unreal Tournament classic. Alas, this news may dampen such lively spirits, for Morris' statement has been clarified in another interview with Australia's Gameplayer:

Unlike previous UTs, in single player you’re controlling a distinct character, with his own personality, quirks, and likes/dislikes. Your team is also comprised of these fleshed out characters and their antics, both in-game and in the cinematics, help ground the over the top action that UT is known for into a strong narrative.

So rather, like Unreal Tournament classic, bot statistics will definitely come into play. But for Unreal Tournament III, that aspect has been improved considerably to 'flesh out' your chosen character and your teammates. This time, background ties down each of your companion's personality and their combat actions.

And because most UT-fans have been content to play offline with AI rather than online with cheaters, Morris states that Epic Games has created considerable content for those types of gamers. "This time around they’ve got a huge campaign to sink their teeth into," said Morris.

Although hopes that ace-gunner Tamerlane, counterpart ace-gunner Tamara, sharpshooting Loque, or bunny-hopping Kragoth may return have dimmed somewhat, suggesting their return to the Unreal Tournament limelight might be helpful. Who knows? Maybe Epic will listen. Besides, who wouldn't want to have ol' buddy Tamerlane watching your back?

This is potentially great news for future titles using UE3 on the PS3.

Yeah, that's him indeed. If he says solid 30 fps, chances are that he's most likely right, even if he wasn't sure at first whether PS3's version would have KB+M support. The PSN trailer runs at 30 fps as well.

In any case, if someone believes it runs at 60 fps, it must mean that the frame rate is really solid and that the game is very fluent. I just wouldn't worry about how it performs on PS3.

I would like to mention that the only time I've heard this game run at more than 30 fps was when it was shown on beta devkits to OPM and claimed it already run at 47 fps. We have no idea how consistent that frame rate was or what the game really looked like back then, so we can't say it has to run better than that now. They could have decided to push the graphical quality further by sacrificing a potential 60 fps performance for rock solid 30 fps and best possible quality.

That's actually what the discussion in the link was about. Basically yeah, its possible and some builds of the game are hitting 60fps, but the final game will ship at a solid smooth 30 with no hiccups or whatever for max visual quality...

Either way, it's a damn buy for me after reading about the SP campaign mode and dedication to guys who don't wanna go online all the time..
