View Full Version : Why did you buy Wii?

i'm interested in seeing each member's reason for buying Wii. just for conversations sake.
part of the reason why i bought it was because of the Wii Remote possibilities and Virtual Console/WiiWare Downloads.
but the main reason is that i knew that there would be alot of exclusive games i would enjoy. i've just looked through the upcoming/in development lists for all three home consoles and the tallies cement my decision to buy Wii as a good one.
for 360 i would definitely buy 8 games from their upcoming releases. only one of those eight are exclusive to 360.
for PS3. 12 games. 5/12 = exclusive.
for Wii. 17 games. 15/12 = exclusive.
it certainly confirms Wii as my primary home console. especially as those 17 games dont include Nintendo franchises that havent been announced yet (eg f-zero, pikmin, star fox, etc)
so why did you buy Wii?
is it your primary console? if so, why? if not, which console and why that one?

It is my primary console and i bought it for its unique control scheme and the idea behind it. I wanted to also play the new Nintendo iterations of their popular franchises. It also was the cheapest console from the get go and didnt require me to have an HDTV to enjoy its full potential.
Not to mention, i knew it would be the console Nintendo actually went online with with full force. And that is just around the corner now.
I am pleased with my purchase, and pleased that i waited in line for this sucker. Why? the latter part? Because you still cant find the thing in a majority of places, and had more people known that i might have had to wait for 3 days.

I'll be dealing with this portiopn of the post.
PS3.
Mainly for the reasons people bought the Wii.
I always wanted my games to be involving story wise and Sony is going in that direction with their cinematic approach and they made the right advancements I felt via concentrating on AI and Physics rather than just pretty graphics (although they certainly have that too).
As you would expect from someone who picked PS3 as the main console- It simply has a game line-up that is not even comparable to the other two consoles.
I am however excited about the concept of Punh Out!!! and Metroid Prime should be awesome as I feel these two games can make the Wii-Mote really shine for ''hardcore'' (I really wanted to avoid this word) gamers.
So the last paragraph is why I would buy a Wii if I ever buy (or find lol) one.

Looking back Master, do you kinda wish you would have waited as the games you were most looking forward to probably are coming in the next 6 months or so and werent really there for the last 6 months? Also considering the recent price-drop for the 60gb version, some even with an extra controller.

My bad, I didn't know we were being specific on the fact weather we purchased it or not.
I don't have a PS3 yet as everytime I had the money to buy a PS3, Sony failed to GIVE some content (they showed more than enough though) so I spent it on other stuff.
I did play the PS3 regularly at my cousins though and IF I had bought it early I wouldn't have been dissapointed- We completed Resistance twice together (on Medium and Hard settings) and now I'm going through it on my own (Hard difficulty) and the online is an excellent edition too so I don't think I would have regretted my purchase as I play the PS3 regularly.
MotorStorm was awesome for a few days but got really tedious.
I'll buy it when it feels right and at the moment it doesn't as you pointed out- Sony is playing around with bundles so I do't want to buy a bundle and see a bundle I want more a few days later.
I'll probably wait until Uncharted to get my PS3.
You also failed to mention they now have a 80GB on the market too- I don't know what Sony is trying to do but as a PS veteran even I am a bit confused by all these buyndles and such and see it as a unsafe move to buy one as you never know when they'll make another bundle.

The reason I got a Wii is because I can't get Nintendo games anywhere else.... plus the wiimote look way cool and innovative.
I hardly play it now... just nothing out for me to get hooked on. I mainly play 360 due to the fact that more games that I am into are out and I love xbox live. My 360 was in the same position as my Wii though for months after I bought it, so I am hoping I get more play time out of my Wii in the future.

You're asking for trouble with this thread you know... Don't take this as **** stirring or a dig, love my Nintendo people, but you know, here's what I think.
Bought one because Gamecube was my second favorite console last gen, not for any specific game. I thought Gamecube had the second best controller(loathe the xbox controller), and a selection of very good original games with state of the art console graphics and gameplay. Rogue Leader, Pikmin, Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, all good. Great stuff.
Wii is currently third favorite round my house, 360 has turned out much much better than I expected.
It's all about the content baby.
Primary console here is Playstation 3. For old PS1 classics like Chrono Cross, XenoGears and Vagrant Story, cheap PS2 games that still look and play great in hdmi and only cost 8 bucks each on ebay, new PS3 games like Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, FF13 and Killzone 2. Also the best in high definition movies. Casino Royal, ghost in the shell 2, the 300, etc etc.
Second favorite is 360 with great value XBLA downloads like Geo Wars, Prince of Persia Classic,Zuma and Castlevania SOTN. AAA killer games like Mass Effect, Gears of War, GRAW, Blue Dragon, etc etc. Also for an extra $199 I picked up the poor mans Blu Ray, HD DVD. Some good exclusive stuff like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, King Kong, Fear and Loathing, etc.
And achievements do matter and do change the way you play games. Best idea ever achievements. 360 rocks. Much much better console than I expected.
Wii has it's moments. In the first six months Zelda was a good solid title. Mario 64 and Paper Mario for only 10 bucks were welcome. Playing Paper Mario to the end. Very much looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy. To be honest as far as platformers go I'm looking forward to Little Big Planet more. I haven't finished the previous Metroid Prime games yet and I was never such a big fan of Smash Bros.
Also I understand the need to make the Wii online service kid safe, but to me it just seems broken. I have no games with leaderboards, no buddies on my buddy list, have never played a game online on Wii and don't expect to this year. Also it has no demos of games to download. I currently have 50 people on my PS3 buddy list without lifting a finger. Can't be arsed entering lists of 16 digit numbers.
Also I bought it for light gun games and although they're here now I've heard complaints about the accuracy of the zapper. Then Namco go and bring out Guncon 3 for PS3.
And for the most part the VC downloads are vastly overpriced. Sonic 1 currently costs half on XBLA and has high res, smoothing, achievements, leaderboards and saving/loading.
I dunno, between the SNES and mid N64 era I was pretty rabid pro Nintendo, and with every generation it slips a little. Maybe it's waiting on that sequel to Mario 64 that never came, perhaps SMG will be the one...
I dunnnooooooo. Miyamoto is a definite hero of mine, and the Super Nintendo is a definite golden era of console gaming. But you know, I gravitate to the brightest lights and biggest bangs.

I chose Wii as my console of choice because Nintendo has never disappointed me when it comes to great games. I only have a few games for Wii due to the fact that Im a poor bastard, but I love the games I have. I could have afforded a 360 instead back around Wii launch time, but Im glad I made the choice I did. I still want a 360 one day though cause I gotta play fable 2 and GTA4.

But i didnt mention the 80 gb version because its not even out yet, and it is overpriced for what it adds.

To expand on that, the ability for real creative developers to create software that really pushes the creativity and fun of games.
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition I swear is so much fun when you really get into it, Suda 51's next masterpiece No More Heroes as well as Metroid Prime 3 are all games that take advantage of what the Wii was created for and just seems to make games we've been playing that much more fun and entertaining.
I choose Nintendo because I love gaming, and now I wanted to experience a real new trend that Nintendo began with the DS and is expanding upon with great software out now and on the way.

i am?
the main question i am asking is "why did people buy Wii?"
the secondary questions are "what is primary console and why?"
i never asked "what dont you like about the other consoles?" or anything of the like.
plus i made a note at the end of the first post that trouble will not be tolerated.
looks to me that i wasnt asking for trouble.
i found your opinion good to read but the following paragraph was really the only bit on topic.

I was hoping for a few things:
1. Nintendo to get their online act together and take it seriously. (So far, failed)
2. A chance to play hardcore games in ways that totally enhance the experience, much like the DS. (Besides SSX Blur this has also failed so far)
3. Revisit classics and try ones I never got the chance, especially favorites I only got a taste of. (Both achieved and failed, considering the main games I want are Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, and other Rare titles)
4. To play Nintendo titles (Metroid, Mario, etc) like never before. (Also pass/failed)
5. To get my girlfriend and non-gamers in the family to play. (Success)
Suffice to say I am more than disappointed in my Wii so far. In fact, the only reason I really still own one is because EA and Battalion Wars II/Mario Strikers Charged.

I bought the Wii because Nintendo makes my favorite games. I can't get the latest Metroid or Zelda on the 360 or ps3. I also knew the system wouldn't be as expensive as the other consoles. Being able to download classic games was another reason.
I liked how Nintendo decided to do something different from Microsoft and Sony. I think they kind of had to. If the Wii had been made with a similar controller to the Gamecube and more powerful, I think it wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is now and end up slowly dying off like the GC did.
So now you know.

hehe, thats interesting......of all the criticism the other two consoles copped about their price, and all the talk about how affordable the Wii is, only 2 people mentioned price as a reason for buying the Wii... i just thought that was an interesting statistic.
Price is one of the big reasons why i would buy one, but the ps2 is currently my primary console :)

Three Words: Zelda Twilight Princess.
also because my 360 brokeded and I returned it the same day a Wii came into the store used.
So far, I am kind of disappointed in what the Wii offers me, a hardcore gamer, in terms of games that keep my attention. I don't know how long it's been since I played Wii Sports, or even picked up Zelda (which I NEED to finish...). The reason I have kept my Wii, however, is in the hopes that Nintendo will cater to my needs.
BWii, Metroid, Strikers Charged, Galaxy, Brawl, de Blob, Dragon Sword, and other possible online titles and good looking games are the reason I have, thus far, kept it.

Charged is but a few days away, and i cant wait til i score against people half-a-country away. It will almost be like playing online on a normal console. Except, i will have to deal with the 16-digit codes. :|
I cant wait though.
Also, another major selling point for me was that i can play GCN games on the Wii. So far, i have gotten Super Monkey Ball, Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (i think?), and Resident Evil 4. The Wii has yet to disappoint me in the games regard because i still have ALOT of other games to play from the back catalog of GCN games. So, if i get bored with the Wii games i still have alot to do. I get to live two generations of games with one console. Not to mention, the Virtual Console and MARIO FUCKING KART!!!!! Love that game.
Lucent Beam
07-18-2007, 04:09 PM
Because I played it at E3 and it was fun.
Mostly, I really loved WarioWare and the idea of Monkey Ball using the remote. Too bad Monkey Ball turned out to be sucky with all its jumping and terrible boss battles, and awful multiplayer mini-games.
When I bought it, I said "Nah, I'll never buy VC games or anything" and it actually turns out that relaly all I use my Wii for. I really rarely play actually Wii games, but instead just power-on to play whatever I've downloaded from VC. So the 'why I bought a Wii in the first place' is a totally different reason from 'why I play my Wii now'.

Medal of Honor is fixing to bust out a 32 player online and Madden 08 will be online with leaderboards and all that. Expect much more after those two hit.

Zelda. Yes. I bought the Wii just to play Twilight Princess. I could not wait for the GCN release.

Oh I am following all of EA's efforts. I guess I meant more in terms of Nintendo franchises and I am pretty sure I'll be satisfied once I play Corruption, Battalion Wars, Mario Strikers (in 2 weeks!), and Super Mario Galaxy though. In fact, I really just want Nintendo to ditch the random matchups for their online games and do what EA is doing for Wii. I am very happy with almost everything EA has done so far (especially love Harry Potter...yes I know), and their future titles seem even better. They have really changed as a company. However, I don't particularly prefer the way RE4 was done, although the new content and budget price make up for it.
The main reason? Nintendo first-party games.
i bought it because i was under the impression that it was going to have a bunch of really sweet games, now that it's out i'm honestly very dissapointed. Games for the most part have been extremely lackluster out of those released so far, and honestly there are probably more titles coming out for other consoles that I'm looking forward to. A lot of the wii is gimmicky, well I wouldn't say the console itself, but based on a lot of what some lazier developers are doing. I am pissed that they didn't up the power of the machine as they could have turned a profit and made the console a bit more powerful easily.
I do understand that the wii is not meant to be the most powerful console, and I do have a 360 for the graphics pleasing, but seriously, a lot of what we're seeing looks like it could have been done easily on a ps2, and yet there are frequent frame rate issues. Developers that are making games for this system need to get their shit together and put out some quality titles. Stop porting garbage from psp and ps2, make the visuals like something that deserves to be on the console, and the experience one as well. I need more deep and interesting games, not short mini game type nonsense.
And yeah, I'm a big nintendo fan, have always been, but I'm starting to open my eyes and not be blinded by fanboyness. Hopefully next year we will see a signicant mark up in the quality of these 3rd party efforts, and more concentration from nintendo in new IP's that aren't just for the non gamer type. At least we do have metroid, mario and smash bros coming out this year...and there damn well better be a good multiplayer online mode in smash bros.

P.B., you have to realize that this console was a huge gamble for the Nintendo. Sure, as you look back in hindsight they could have easily upped the graphical abilities a bit and still turned a profit. However, hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20 as they say, and when the Wii first appeared at E3 everyone took a collective gasp at what Nintendo was going to attempt. Most didnt think it would work, and alot even made this out to be the end of Nintendo in the console realm.
However, that ended up not being the case by a long shot so far. The Wii has been a huge success but not even Nintendo really thought this would happen. They dont have other products to push besides video games, so unlike Sony and MS they cant afford to NOT sell a product with pumped up graphics and take losses for a long time.
Like Viper and many others have said, the games we have been seeing for the past 7 months or so were basically games that were going to be ported onto the Wii in a shitty fashion anyways. Why? Because no one saw the success of the Wii coming. So 3rd parties made shitty games with less than stellar graphics because to them it wouldnt really matter because the Wii wasnt supposed to sell alot of consoles anyways.
Lately, we have seen some of the things the Wii is capable of with glimpses of SSBB, Mario Galaxy, Metroid, etc. We are seeing companies turning their focus onto the Wii because it is growing at an incredible pace. Had the Wii had the same abilities of the 360 in graphical power i bet we would STILL see shitty ports and graphics so far.
I think people over exaggerate the inabilities of the Wii, because we really havent seen what it can produce. Will it rival the 360 and PS3? Hell no, but it will look good in its own right. However, they havent shown me much yet in terms of what is actually out there right now on shelves. But the future looks bright in gameplay and graphics.

I actually agree. The Wii gesturing motions has been rather disappointing. However, I still think it's a better, much more versatile, controller. For instance, Metroid Prime 3 is impossible on the other consoles, and IGN says it controls "better than any other console FPS." Another testament to it's versatility is Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You can controll it in four different ways!
I bought a Wii because I'm a fan of Nintendo's games. We haven't seen many good ones yet, but I'm sure in good time we will. I also considered a 360, but I didn't really want to play any of the games on it.

How did you play PS2 titles in 1080i? It's not really possible, unless it was through an upconversion device, which isn't much better receiving an hd signal through a non-hd source.
I can see what you are saying with the "complicated way of pressing A" but then again I think Tennis is one of the better examples. Your wrist makes a huge difference in that, and power is definitely accountable in it. I don't know if you missed that or what. In fact, that is a not the best game to say you decided against it on. Maybe boxing or baseball, I can see, but then again, it's also all in how it's applied. It can be as versatile or as tacked on as the developer allows for it.

Agreed. Very disappointing so far, at least from Nintendo themselves. All they've really done so far is a lot of half-assed Gamecube ports that now seem to be using the Wii in very tacked on controls. Hopefully they have some worthwhile games coming to really take advantage of their own technology.

Hindsight is 20/20. Doesn't mean you have to act on it. I will completely agree with you on this topic, Nintendo is being totally retarded and stubborn as a 4-year-old when it comes to online. I'd much rather have a slightly restrictive system that was uniform through all games, and it'd be easy to have one code attached to the console itself and use the same friend list for every game, but for some reason Nintendo decided hat the only way to keep Little Billy from talking to pedophiles is to throw so many goddamn numbers at him he can't figure out what the fuck he's doing.

I agree. I definitely notice a difference when swinging the Wii-mote at different angles and even adding twist. I can make the ball do wicked spins in tennis by slicing the heck out of it.

I agree with this sentiment. I wish Nintendo would grow up just a little more. Though, in the end, if they allow developers to run their own online system maybe they will see that pedophiles dont exactly prey on kids online over a fucking video game. :|
At least, i dont think they do....

Very nicely said. Nintendo also likes to give "special features" to people who have each others friend codes. For example in MP: Hunters, voice chat, more game types, and more options are available only to players who have friend codes. Nintendo is saying "fuck you" to everyone without the luxury of knowing other people who have the game.

I really think through all my frustration at Nintendo, this is the one thing that really gets me. I mean, it's great that they are trying to protect the industry but is it really their responsibility considering any kid can jump online and go to places like "Club Penguin" and interact with anyone, say anything to anybody, or give out any information that may be asked of them, but Nintendo here won't let 20+ year old gamers have voice chat unless we figure out each others 12 digit code. It's just not their responsibility, really. Although if they let any company do what EA is doing with their online (basically, leavin it up to the publisher/developer to decide), then I'll let it slide that they (Nintendo) are using friend codes their games
In fact, I'm a lot happier with Nintendo right now, because I didn't end up having to wait th 3-4 years I expected for Kirby's Dream Course. Thank you Nintendo.

I see what you are saying Green Elf. And it makes sense. Let them worry about their own games, not others. Though i wish Nintendo would have moved forward one more step and create it so other companies could use one general system for online play. Anything close to Xbox Live is a plus for me.

Considering how easy it was for my nephew to get into deep shit through the Internet recently, I'm glad Nintendo has made things as hard as it is.
It might not be their responsibility, but they're the ones who are gonna get blamed, shamed and raped in the ass for their money if something goes wrong.

I'd rather not discuss that any further.
Fair enough. It's not that the internet isn't dangerous, but Nintendo's online system is already so restrictive even when you DO use friend codes, it's not like you're going to be abducted by playing against someone in Mario Strikers.
One could even argue that it causes extra problems, since most people, in search of "friends" to play against, will go onto internet forums where you could actually get in trouble.

I hear those internet forums are a whole mess of trouble. I like to stay far away from them.

@ Zeep: When you quoted my post, you should've included all of it.

The second paragraph pretty much says it all.
I understand that's the reason they're doing it. It still frustrates me. I only quoted part of your post because I was curious about that bit.
