If they somehow manage to get a Helghan chick to look like Thandie Newton, Guerilla and Sony will have won 10 fold.

omfg who saw the new gameplay from the keynote?
jesus
Exactly - lousy streamning quality - but dear God, that really blew my mind. I simply can't wait to get the latest trailer - let alone get my hands on this game.
THE most aggressive and hectic game this E3. Nothing comes close to that brute force style...

WooooooooooooW! I was justs expecting the same trailer they showed last night, but to actually play the demo onstage! It looks great, can't wait to play.

It's a shame they had to cut away from him finishing the level in order to show what appeared to be gameplay footage from the night before all spliced up and edited nicely. But yeah, the new HD version of that one can't get uploaded fast enough.

I'm watching the trailer again and i can't get over how good the character models look. The detail in the guys hair (the 5 a' clock shadow thats not a part of his Mohawk) is crazy. And I love the guy with the bandannas facial expression lol.
The gameplay trailer was ssssiiick.
okay, the first trailer is nothing compared to the full version! the intensity in off the roof!

Amazing visuals...I've yet to see it on my pS3 in hi-def though, so allow me to post before the hype in me takes over again...
Killzone lacked in gameplay elements despite it's technical flaws, all I've seen so far has been pretty run and gun shooter stuff, with small traces of blind fire and cover system.
Multiplayer and a deep single player have to really stand out in this title...
It does look very promising though, and I'm sure Ted has dropped by a few times and gave them some pointers;)
Too bad it's 08--but that only means the game will simply look better than this first trailer.
Congrats to Sony to doing what NEEDED to be done today, with the price cut they took half a step, today, they finally started walking...
Still an uphill battle, but credit needs to be given to Sony for putting there games up for show and impressing a huge audience.

I already downloaded the 2 mintures trailer on my PS3 and it look amazing! Looks exactly like the CGI trailer from 2005. Low res textures? That's just the bad screenshots. The video is different. The video doesn't have any low res textures. The bad screenshots does this game no justice. And the AA is amazing. I am just waiting for the 15 minutes video of the developers playing it now.

These gifs are like they are from movies, it's retarded!!!
With so many things going on at once, the amazing particle effects, the physics, the animations and the insane amount of geometry, I think this game finally shows what the Cell is all about.

Edited my last post...don't know what i was thinking typing 15 minute trailer lol. But i love the intensity of the action. Not to sound like a fanboy (i can't help it sometimes) but when i watch the Halo trailer i feel like i'm watching a video game (pretty nonetheless) and when i'm watching the Killzone trailer i feel like i'm watching an interactive movie if that makes any sense.

Red-Eyes > Well in fact a dev explain that the 15 Demo was, a demo lol but it took 15 minutes to a dev to demo a walkthrough of the level they showed..
So it would have taken longer for someone else to play the demo.
Unfortunately I hink we ll only have the extended trailer.. Not the private demo because it had some bugs and popups and was not meant to be shown in public I think.

Looks really great but no Killzone'05. they've had two years to get it this good and it doesn't seem like it was time wasted. I'm not overly impressed(yes there's alot to see but not all good)but i've never been band wagon kind of guy. now lets just see if the gameplay hold up.

You know what the craziest thing about it is though?
Some of it, dare I say, a lot of it, looks better now than from the trailer! The contrast levels, the colour, the explosiveness, the lighting, I'm serious! Overall, I think it looks better now.
Technically, not as sharp, not as 'detailed,' but you know, I think it looks better!!!
so far the only thing i don't like is the strange red fire getting out of falling ship :)

@ link of time *cough*E3 05 trailer was Cg...this is one of the best looking next-gen games regardless*cough*
And personanlly i love the color pallete and the look of the game. Gritty is the word of the day and thats the perfect style for an intense war game like this. Nothing cartoony here (war ain't pretty lol)..not for the youngins :). Plus i agree that I actually like this more then the E3 05 trailer. Might not be as detailed but the action is even more intense and it looks amazing however you look at it.

Actually, as sharp as the trailer. Go download the one from PS network and go watch it on your HD TV on your PS3 and you'll see what I mean. It look as good as the CGI trailer.

But anyway...you didn't really expect it to look THAT good did you? I'm simply amazed its so close. So i don't see the point in mentioning that it doesn't look as good as the trailer considering it looks as good as it does. If it looked bad or paled in comparison I could see the point in mentioning it but since it looks pretty amazing i don't.

there are still certain things the 05 does better then the 07 clip, more defined lighting, textures and partical effects (some of you might not know what im talking about there, in the 05 clip when they fired the rocket as we all know the smoke trail was eye popping, then i saw in the sony conference when the player fired the rocket the smoke trail was striaght and didnt have different widths in the trail like the 05 one did)
aside from those 3 things which i have no doubt at all will be fixed because its only a pre-pre-alpha, the 07 clip is on par if not better then the 07 clip. certainly alot more going on this time around.

They've gotten so close to that trailer that it ain't even funny. In fact, in quite a few places the guys at GG were able to do better than the trailer. Needless to say, all of this was delivered with the game launching in 2008. This is early July, so you go figure.

Something I like about this game among other FPS games is that when you shoot someone, the blood spurts out realistically.
That may sound sadistic, but it's something I haven't seen in other games of this genre.

I think it's safe to say that the PS3 and killzone surpassed our realistic expectations for what was possible this generation. I mean common, nobody really expected that Killzone would match the CG trailer of 05, and yet here we are wondering how much better Killzone will look compared to the CG when it's actually completed!

Man after watching the trailer on my PS3 in HD a couple hundred times I gotta say, I went back and watched FPS trailers of CoD4, Haze, Blacksite Area 51, even other genres and frankly now, at least graphix wise they don't add up to snuff, they seem so underwhelming now. Even CoD4 which got me excited for Killzone again after seeing it and thinking wow if they can make a game look like CoD4, Killzone should be close. but now Killzone blew everything out of the water. Now I'm like whats the deal with these other games and trying to fool us into thinking what they were offering was next-gen :wtf: . guess thats my :2cents: Anyone else feel this way? not necessarily Sony's first or second party but from third party publishers. Does this post even make sense or am I too tired from a whirlwind day of awesomeness. And its late.

I whol heartedly agree. I was head over heals over CoD4. it was the best looking and performing FPS on consoles. but now when I looked at it after being Killzoned, it looks just like how I saw Area 51: BlackSite. I was like WTF?! what happened here? lol
of course these games still look good, but they were are trumped by Killzone 2. and not only graphically, but I have yet to feel the intensity and mayhem in any other game presented as well. :)
saying this game is going to rock socks would be an understatement.

I'm so glad it turned out looking so amazingly good! I always expected them to deliver with the graphics and they did that easilly IMO (and I'm sure GG will be able to polish it even further before it's release), but what was clearly beoynd my expactations was the whole scenery in general! There's so much happening, that you can bearly notice the moving/reacting/lightning/AI and other details going on at the same time. That's what makes it (current) next-gen! The atmosphere will be amazing when playing this game no doubt, with 7.1 sound adding to the exparience. There's awesome games coming this fall/year's end, but next year is starting look legendary already. Can't wait!!!

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: First Killzone 2 Hands-On
Thursday, July 12, 2007 6:23 AM
By N'Gai Croal
After two years of intense skepticism (see our next post for a more thorough airing of the backstory), Tuesday night's first showings of Sony Computer Entertainment and Guerrilla Games' Killzone 2 to journalists have generally produced extremely positive reactions. But having cleared that first high hurdle, the next question everyone wants to know is: how does it play? We were fortunate enough to be the first to play Killzone outside of the folks at SCE and Guerrilla, so allow us to give you our hands-on impressions of Killzone 2's gameplay elements; our close-up look at the game's visuals, along with some exclusive first details on the title's design choices and story elements, will follow shortly.
Once our intruder landing vehicle hit the ground, it was time to go to work on what we were informed was the third level of Killzone 2. We immediately took refuge behind a berm, hit L1 to drop into a crouch, shouldered our standard-issue ISA assault rifle and started shooting at our Helghast opponents. Pushing in R3 on the right analog stick gave us the iron sight view through the assault rifle's scope--which, when we informed our Sony and Guerrilla hosts was the aspect of the demo which had most impressed us, gave them a bit of pause, followed by minor hilarity, until we explained ourselves further. It's not that there aren't several other impressive aspects of the game. It's just that the focus blur on the outside of the rifle scope, the scope's green tint and curved glass feel, and the green laser dot that indicates where your bursts of ammo should land--all combine for a wonderfully immersive view of the game that sucked us in both as spectators and active participants.
As we cautiously picked our way through the ground combat's opening moments, game director Mathijs de Jonge gave us the first official explanation of the game's cover system, which many of our observant peers picked up on during the Tuesday evening previews. You can always simply crouch behind obstacles, as you would in any other shooter, but Guerrilla has added something extra. When you hit L2 near cover, the game puts you into cover mode. Once you're in cover, you can use the left analog stick to pop up, lean left or lean right to take precise aim at your Helghan enemies. Alternatively, you can blindfire by simply pulling the trigger (R2) on your weapon. You're completely safe behind non-erodable cover as long as the enemy is on the same plane as you; if they've got the high ground, they can hit you if they have the right angle. We didn't ask Guerrilla directly whether the use of cover would be all-but-mandatory, as with Gears of War, or optional; regardless, it adds a tactical element to the game that fits seamlessly with the Killzone mythos. Overall, the cover mechanic works extremely well, without ever having to switch the gamer into a third-person view as does Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Vegas, and we won't be surprised when we see a number of Guerrilla's peers paying homage to borrowing stealing this idea after they get their hands on it.
We also appreciated Guerrilla's decision to go with a minimal amount of screen clutter. Right now, all you'll see onscreen is the aiming reticule and an ammo counter. Don't expect to see the ammo counter in the final product, however. Guerrilla wants to eliminate the HUD entirely by putting the ammo readout on the weapons themselves, as certain other games do with some of their weapons. (One thing we missed from the first Killzone was the visual countdown system that let you see how long your grenade had been "cooked" before you threw it--right now, hitting R1 just throws the grenades with a not-particularly-interesting animation--so we're crossing our fingers hoping that they'll bring the Killzone 1 grenades back.) The health system is similar to games like King Kong and Gears of War: you can take a few shots without any problem, but once you start taking a significant amount of damage, the screen shifts to a striking black and white filter, warning you to take cover. It's simple, it's distinctive, and it works.
The other moment worth highlighting from our hands-on time was our confrontation with the level's mini-boss, an armored Helghan heavy gunner who shares a passing resemblance--and an equally high intimidation factor--with the Big Daddy enemies in Irrational Games' BioShock. Like the mini-bosses of old, there's a trick to killing him, which is to shoot the energy pack on his back until it explodes. You can try to flank him while your AI-controlled squadmate Rico engages him from the front, or you can shoot his visor, which causes him to turn around, briefly exposing his energy pack to the rat-tat-tat of your assault rifle. We couldn't kill him to save our lives, but it was a pulse-quickening enough firefight that we gave it a good ten or so consecutive attempts before finally asking de Jonge to take care of him so that we could continue on with the demo. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get much further than that before our hands-on time came to an end.
If we have a single reservation right now, it's about the level of recoil that Guerrilla has implemented on the weapons. We know that Guerrilla has months to go before they have to bear down and properly tune the game; still, we found ourselves babying the aiming reticule in order to compensate for the amount of drift from each burst of fire. We know from the time that we've spent with the folks from Guerrilla in the past that they're interested in a sense of heightened realism when it comes to their weapons--that's why there aren't any laser guns or energy blades--and we're certainly willing to attribute this to our poor aim or easily panicked demeanor when confronted by waves of armed Helghast. But we suspect that Halo-weaned masses will want to be able to hold down their triggers just a wee bit longer before the reticule starts rising. Nevertheless, we were thoroughly impressed with our single-player hands-on time with Killzone, particularly the first-person cover mechanic, which we provides an excellent tactical option for more deliberate gamers like ourselves, who prefer to hang back rather than rush ahead. If the company continues to design enemy encounters around the optional use of cover, it bodes well for Killzone 2's future depth and replayability.
See our follow-up post about the game's visuals, design and story here.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Expanded Details on Killzone 2
Thursday, July 12, 2007 6:28 AM
By N'Gai Croal
Has any young franchise ever labored under so many freighted expectations? Long before Guerrilla Games' completed Killzone in 2004, back when word was slowly was starting to leak about a mysterious first-person shooter from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe named Kin, that same grapevine carried word that Sony was calling this shooter its "Halo killer." Sony credibly denied this, saying that the frenzy was being whipped up instead by gossipy game journalists, yet the damn-near-impossible-to-live-up-to label stuck, as much from the desires of shooter-bereft PlayStation 2 owners as from the derision of Halo fanatics. And while the end result had several compelling attributes--its riveting opening movie; its muted, blown out color palette; its painterly art direction; and its deliberate evocation of major wars and conflicts of the twentieth century within a futuristic setting--the first Killzone was ultimately much too ambitious for the PS2 to handle, resulting in one of the best mediocre games we've ever had fun playing.
Next, when Killzone 2's mind-blowing E3 2005 trailer turned out to be a computer-generated movie, the hearts of all but the stoutest of Sony fanboys hardened, with many predicting that Guerrilla would never be able to live up to its own hype. In the wake of that perceived betrayal, neither 2006's well-received PSP installment (Killzone: Liberation) nor an intriguingly promising but not-quite-there-yet technical demonstration of Killzone 2 multiplayer's physics system did much to sway journalists' opinion. But through it all, SCE and Guerrilla kept pushing for what they firmly believed they were capable of achieving. And when the "Killzone 2: Mission Accomplished" slide came up at the end of the 20-minute demo, followed by loud, sustained applause from the skeptical crowd of journalists, the gesture transformed itself from a "F--- you" to a statement of fact: for the moment, Guerrilla's promise had been realized.
When we arrived at SCE's Santa Monica studios for our world exclusive first hands-on session (see here for our report), we were escorted into a conference room to sit down with Guerrilla managing director Hermen Hulst, producer Steven ter Heide, and game director Mathijs de Jonge. We began with another playthrough of the level with de Jonge at the controls and ter Heide manning a keyboard plugged into the PS3 development kit, periodically slowing down or pausing the action so that we could discuss a particular detail.
First, Hulst wanted to show us not only that everything from the level's introductory cinematic to the actual ground combat was in-engine, but also to note the amount of detail in the level. So we paused the game with the intruder landing vehicle still airborne so that de Jonge could move the camera through the clouds and all the way down to the city square below--seamlessly. There were no tricks, the entire level was there, already loaded into memory so that we could eventually enjoy a seamless transition from the cinematic to live gameplay. As we zoomed back out to the clouds to resume the demo, we asked de Jonge about the three tower-like ships hovering above the cloud cover at the beginning of both the trailer and the demo. He informed us that those were the Vektan cruisers, from which the ISA is launching its invasion of Helghan. He added that the game itself will begin in media res, with the invasion of Helghan already in progress. The majority of the Helghan citizenry will have already fled their homes--a convenient explanation for the generally empty cityscapes many shooters generally feature, de Jonge acknowledged--but the game's opening will provide further details on that particular story element.
As he pointed out the game's Mohawk-sporting main character--stressing that there are more polygons in a single character model in Killzone 2 than in an entire level from Killzone 1--it finally clicked that we would no longer be playing as Jan Templar, the hero of both Killzone and Killzone: Liberation. The new lead's name is Sev, a veteran of the Legion, which are the ISA's equivalent of Special Forces. Only Rico returns from the first two games for a major role. Hakha is nowhere to be found, but Lugar will make a small appearance, while Evelyn from Liberation will serve as you point of contact on the cruiser. Gamers will periodically return to one of the cruisers between missions, which will serve as a hub of sorts.
When de Jonge hit the ground and began playing the game, Hulst said that they added the brief checkpoint-style pause at that point specifically for the demo so that journalists could see for themselves that the game is real. The final game will have a seamless transition from cinematics to combat. As de Jong continued to lay waste to the Helghast, Hulst and ter Heide explained the game's extensive post-processing system, which allows for a more subtle film grain effect than the one in the first game, along with blur and depth of field. What was most striking was when they turned the post-processing effects off: the level looked almost completely different, as if it were taking place in the mid-afternoon. It's clear that while Guerilla's painterly art style is still very much in effect, it's not just the PS3 that makes the planet of Helghan look different from that of Vecta; the designers have art directed them differently as well.
When ter Heide turned the post-processing effects back on, we finally understood the uneasy feeling that the level evoked within us; their careful real-time calibration of the game's light, shadow and color--"we replace the sunnier colors with darker, grittier colors," says ter Heide--combined with the art direction and level design to create the oppressive gloom that they wanted. "The planet is meant to be hostile," said de Jonge. "The desaturated colors suit it." We hope that SCE and Guerrilla eventually release some video footage showing the difference that their post-processing effects make, because you have to see it to believe it. And from what sources in the know tell us, it's a similar special sauce that has Activision and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare looking similarly hot.
The cover system that we praised in our hands-on post was coded by the same programmer who handled the cover mechanics in the PSP game Killzone: Liberation, showing that the franchise's detour to handhelds provided some additional benefits. They switched to a third-person perspective (that's just a developer trick; the final game will be first-person only) so that we could see all of the cover animations, by way of explaining that the cover system was designed by first animating Sev from a third-person view, then tweaking the look of it from a first-person perspective. "We expected it to be complicated," said Hulst, "but our programmer took care of it pretty quickly."
One of the things that made us believe in Guerrilla's potential, even when it hadn't yet been fully realized, was the company's attention to detail. Looking up above, we see cables that look like power lines or telephone lines, swaying in the wind. (There's practically not a jagged line to be found on the power lines, or any other lines, for that matter; we're told it's because Killzone 2 is using the Cell's SPUs and the RSX graphics chip to achieve 4x full-screen anti-aliasing.) There's a glow decal that happens when bullets make contact; right now it's applied to all weapons, but they're planning to dial it back and only have it apply to certain weapons. Even the tracer fire seems specific to Killzone 2, as if it has a slight upward arc the further it gets from the muzzle. When you kill a Helghast, a red pool of blood not only forms to indicate that he's dead, but it also turns yellowish over time. The dramatic light and shadow in the previous screenshot of the Helghast vaulting over a rail, which has been the subject of much chatter online, comes from the game's multiple dynamic lights. There's even a complete Helghan alphabet, seen on signage throughout the level, which was created by the game's concept designers. And while we don't think it will replace Klingon anytime soon, it's still evidence of how much specificity the people at Guerrilla want to bring to the Killzone universe now that the console they're working on finally matches their ambition.
From the time that we've spent with the folks at Guerrilla following Tuesday night's media preview and yesterday's exclusive hands-on session, the impression that we've gotten is that they're proud of their achievement, while recognizing that they still have many miles to go. But what Guerrilla managing director Hulst, ter Heide and de Jonge seemed happiest about is the excitement that the extraordinarily positive reaction has created among the rest of the team back home. We're happy that they're happy, but we'll be even happier when they finish the game--so that we can judge the finished product for ourselves.

I can't imagine what multiplayer will look like, imagine tons of details, mind blowing animation...If they can balance the graphics equally between the single campagne and the multiplayer....I 'll rank Guerilla Games as "the most talented development team of the world " lol...
COME ON !!! Killzone owned all the awards, besy graphics, best music, best gameplay best FPS loooool and game of E3 ! :-D
I dont think they have playable demos out right now.

No, I meant about the article writers and editors, not forum posters :)In many cases the almighty dollar doesn't allow them to be positive about anything PS3.
Which is sad really.
Thankfully we have videos/trailers/demos these days :)
*Please give us the E3 demo, pity please!*
4xFSAA really makes the world of difference. And remember guys, it's impossible for RSX to pull out both 4xFSAA and HDR ;)

4xFSAA, that explains it!
Sadly, I doubt we'll get the demo anytime soon, since it was full of bugs and pop-ups, and not create for scrutiny by the public.
I think the game is so awesome that I didn't bother to look for bugs :-p Really, that's nonsense at this point. Pre-prealpha, d00ds!
We already knew that it would be jaggie-free. The few specifications we read on Killzone's engine included multisampling AA, and it shows :) Amazing how Killzone craps on all of the shitty multiplatform FPS games to date and how it crushes those claims about RSX being unable to apply proper AA and all that garbage.

They are over 100 people at Guerrilla Games today, so I'm fairly positive they will eventually have a demo available. Beta first though...

Thx for the article.. you can always count on N'gai to tell it how it is.
About the post processing effects mentioned, didn't kojima-san talk about that in what was it TGS2k5 about how those kind of effects were only possible with the help of CELL?
He demonstrated how he could change the way the scene looked on the fly to create the illusion of whatever the artist wanted. Heres the video of the post processing effect demonstration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atrKG7L3C1k its at about 4:20 in.

Cliffy-B: I thought it looked hot!
Ben: Did you?
Cliffy-B: Yeah, the funny thing about that game is that the lead programmer (Arjan Brussee, from Guerilla Games) and I, actually, that was the programmer I did Jazz JackRabbit with back in the day.
Ben: Really?
Cliffy-B: Yeah, and that’s always like, you know at E3 a couple years ago that was being compared to Gears and everything, so everything is kind of full circle. It’s like, I’m fucking Professor X, and he’s Magneto.

Honestly after watching the gameplay video and watching the .mp4 trailer countless times I have to honestly say that this is the true point where games and cinema collide.
From even seeing the best of the best up until this point there was always something plainly obvious from the graphics that it was most definitely in-game, but after seeing Killzone 2, Crysis, and MGS4; now the first thing that comes to mind is..."Wait, is this real gameplay?".
2008 looks to be a true milestone in gaming history...from a graphics stand point at the least.
Edit: By the way, I wonder what CPI's thoughts are on the trailer? I would be very interested to read what he thinks was done to make the game look the way it does now.

07-13-2007, 04:14 AM
I wonder if he'd say a word. Lurkers who might as well be bloggers or writers/editors may take his word n spin stories out of it if its any nitpick. So he could choose not to say a word.
And We both know if CPI says its all good then no blogger would pay attention. So if he nitpicks here n there, chances are, we'll be reading it soon enough on the intraweb n some nice soul will quote n make a thread for it too. lol
By the way, i too am quite anxious to hear CPI's(or for that fact any developers) take on this game. I wanna know what they think of it.
thanks for the upload Bruce. :)

I am saying March since they didn't elaborate on when in 08 they think it'll be ready. MGS4 did say early 08, though. but as when any game announced for end of 07, I don't think a delay will be as much as a year away. this is not GT. lol

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. I'm sure they've spent majority of their time getting the visuals to where they are and from here it's a matter of tightening up the particle effects maybe, keeping the framerate consistent and debugging it. panning out the story line, that kinda thing. There's a lot to do with finishing a game besides improving the graphics until release. and besides, march isn't that far away, as far as developing a game goes.
julps31
07-14-2007, 02:46 AM
Maybe "a good deal better" is a little extreme but I think it'll be noticable difference. Not night and day but a definant improvment in certain parts of the game (facial animation, fire/explosions..the few places that need work). And personally I think Rico's model could look more realistic. He kinda stands out as the least realistic character model (facially) where the others could pass as CG imo.
Newboi
07-14-2007, 02:59 AM
Speaking of Rico, isn't he supposed to be the heavy weapons guy?
The weapon that the huge armor clad Helgian was touting seemed to function just like Rico's staple weapon.
curryking1
07-14-2007, 03:05 AM
I think they'll go for a much more realistic approach with the ISA this time. Normal humans won't carry giant guns like that and walk around. Unless Rico is just like that for the trailer.
I think most ISA weapons will be more realistically proportioned this time around. I saw that light machine gun from the gameplay video (when the player shoots the lightning rod cannon thing), it looked very within normal bounds of proportionality, unlike Rico's exclusive weapon from the first game.
It'll be the style of the Helghast to put fear into the ISA players with the large guns, large body armours, large 'Big Daddy' esque suit a la BioShock I think.
Shogun042
07-14-2007, 03:11 AM
the graphics need tweaks here and there, the fire could use some work. it doesn't have fluidity that fire has, plus character models need tweaking here and there. since it's an 08 game i'm expecting a vast majority of the environment destructible, but i don't want to feel like i'm shooting an auger (ie i can shoot through everything)
I have a question: Helghans themselves cannot live on their own planet without the masks since its atmosphere is toxic and harsh. so technically, the ISA scum (sorry, I'm a Helghan through and through) are on their planet without masks at all. of course, from an art direction's point of view you can't just totally switch or change such general design of the factions like that. but it is just something I wanted to say. lol
now, you know what gets me tingling with excitement? these are the best animations we've seen in a game. and yet, the devs say they don't even have half of them running yet! O_o'

Some people don't like how its all dark and grey-scale. But this is only a night time portion of the game... or maybe even day time... but with TONS of cloud and smoke. O_O
But my point is, look at the shots where there are lots of lights or a brilliant light shining... your jaws dropped right?
Now all I'm hoping for is that the developers put us through ALL weather situations and different times of the day/night. With each stage showing its own unique look and weather and time. All affecting how you have to adjust to the situation.
And hopefully, they show us some BEAUTIFUL scenes... although not likely to happen... but it would be such a shame to put such a great video game engine to waste without showing at least ONE beautiful scene throughout the whole game... >_< Come on, at least to make up for all the PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) we'll have after finishing the game! ^_^

I think its just a small minority of people that don't like the look of the game. But the gray scale look really helps reflect the look and feel of war. It really adds to the intense atmosphere (i'm using both of those words alot to describe this game) of the game.

Massive Damage joke by Joystiq? He is talking about how to destroy the lightning pillar machine...
"By attacking its weak point, the massive pillar will explode, revealing a menacing new enemy."

Exactly... that's the kind of atmosphere they want to create for this game... or at least this level.
But, I was just suggesting that they show different kinds of atmospheres in different levels, to show off their graphical powers. Maybe a level with the sun brightly shining orange at dawn for example...

Maybe a level with the sun brightly shining orange at dawn for example...I totally agree. A sunny environment (or snowy, desert, ect.) would contrast nicely with the dark grimey look of the current level in the trailer. Plus I'd imagine we'll see some weather effects that'll blow us away too.
And thanks for the joystick artical. I don't think I remember seeing that before. Good read even though I don't like how they say it falls short of the incredible expectations that Sony has placed on it. I really think it lived up to the original trailer and then some.

^ Lol, don't worry man, that's not the helgast LAR, that a new Sub-machingun for the ISA, based on the PP-19 Bizon SMG from Russia (which is a freaking cool gun, If you played Freedom Fighters you know which one is) I love it. And now from what I saw, the shotgun attachment from the new LAR is more like a shotgun than a Grenade launcher, like the old one looked. So cool.

I have a question: Helghans themselves cannot live on their own planet without the masks since its atmosphere is toxic and harsh. so technically, the ISA scum (sorry, I'm a Helghan through and through) are on their planet without masks at all. of course, from an art direction's point of view you can't just totally switch or change such general design of the factions like that. but it is just something I wanted to say. lol
Not all Helghans need to wear masks. Just watch the opening cinematic to Killzone 1. Who is that man giving a grand speech to his soldiers? It's scholar Visari, and he's not wearing a mask.;)

Hakka didn't wear a mask either, Commanders or generals too I think :

Also in the opening cinematic. When they show the Elite guard executing Helghast traitors, they are clearly not wearing masks.

Not as good as Crysis, but it's up there. Crysis is on some next-gen shit for real, but I will give this best looking console FPS hands down. And that's even with the placeholder graphical touches like the fire and lightning (I'm sure those'll both look better in the final product).

itsa on par with crysis,imo
Crysis is superior in a number of ways, but most of them are directly related to having much more RAM and a lot more resources on the GPU side on an ideal PC, IMO. In terms of CPU usage, I'd say that both games will be so different that I wouldn't know which one will end up doing more. Crysis has state-of-the-art tech, and so does Killzone. However, the Cell is unique and can probably do more than PC CPUs.
In terms of gameplay, both will be very different.

This is the best looking not Gran Turismo game shown to date. Crysis looks very very good, but Killzone is just ahead of it in the graphics department. I think I may have a very differant way of looking at graphics than most, but based on my perspective Killzone tops Crysis. I think graphics on this gen have to be looked at as more than just screen to screen. This gen graphics are all about phyisics, animation, AI, effects, and liveliness. The most impressive thing about Killzone is all of that has come together for the first time ever (I believe Uncharted also does this). Look at the way the whole screen is constantly changing, the world itself is alive with all kinds of effects going on. Then look at the AI the Helghast are always looking for cover and shooting from cover. Lastly look at the way all of the animation is done, yeah we have all seen the guy jump over the rail, the dude shot in the room and the strategy spot at the begining of the mission, the animation is awsome in this game.

Sorry for the double post PS3 limited. Looking at vids of Crysis that game just never has the same level of stuff going on. The big problem with Crysis is that it suffers from the uncanny valley syndrom which is also aparent in gears. Crysis is the best Picture game so far but the best game in the place were it matter actually playing it is Killzone. I have got to credit Sony for this and you guys should know and if you don't go do the research Sony has been working on this stuff intensly for PS3 starting with late PS2 games, no matter how good a game looks in pics it can still look goofy as hell in motion and totally kill the graphics. Jack, Kaz and Ken all said this would be the next big achevment and the reason the PS3 will when this gen.

Thing is, only a handful people out there would be able to play Crysis on a gfx level that exceeds Killzone.
YET!! Every PS3 owner will be able to utilize 100% and same kind of experience across the board on all the millions of PS3's shipped worldwide to the day of its release. That in itself is a major advantage of Killzone over Crysis.
Crysis can look all the beauty in the world when maxed out but sorry to say, only a teeny tiny fraction of the PC userbase will be maxing it out graphically, the rest will be playing it on lower settings, which might be much inferior to Killzone's graphics. So I'd say Killzone has already on a pre-alpha level pwned crysis bigtime, IMO.

I was reading through motherh's posts on the PlayStation forum and I managed to extract one juicy detail from all of the "no comments."
Apparently, Killzone was originally intended to be a single player game only so they kind of tossed in the online multiplayer at the last minute, and it was still rather good. He said Killzone 2's multiplayer has been undergoing testing since EARLY 2006 and will be well thought-out and fully developed. I'm gonna go back and try to find the quote.
interesting point Yoshaw.
I say that Crysis is real. not very good or impressive, it is flat out real. if that isn't photo realism I don't know what it. but you know what? Crysis is far and above anything ever seen that I can't compare any game to it. so even suggesting that "Crysis looks better" means that you compared them togehter. and having something looking so damn good that it would warrant a comparision and debate tells me Killzone 2 looks damn good.
personally, Crysis for me is just a pretty picture. there isn't enough for me going around. maybe that is the style of gameplay like their Far Cry games. but I am far more interested in the mayhem that Killzone 2 brings. like PS3LikeNoOther said; it isn't just a screen by screen comparison. throwing in everything else in the pot makes Killzone stand out not just over Crysis, but any shooting game I have ever seen.

Well you know, Crysis is the most awesome, beautiful, technically advanced, sexy game that I won't be playing. The days when I built a $2,000 PC just to play one game are long gone.
Best looking thing at E3 Crysis, no doubt, but not for me(broke).
Now Killzone on the other hand...

Yes that's not a lie, Crysis is indeed beautiful, and the freedom of action is really awesome, but something that displeased me for example in far Cry is that the part of discovery and action of the gameplay was to spaced...
I mean sometimes you ended up turning around on the isle and you' ve already killed all the ennemies in the area.
But yeah there's plenty of way to play the game. But you know controlling one character and see no one with you, not lots of allies is kinda wierd I think.
But what makes it special is that everything that you see on screen is dynamic, you can feel the wind blowing the trees , the grass, the ocean , the shadows which are awesome and lot of details " in the environment "
On the otherside Killzone is a fast paced and story driven FPS which puts you under the skin of a soldier on a warzone, it could be pretty linear but hey ! At an early stage of development for the single campagne it looks damn cool.
You' ve got all the intensity of a battlefield with those gritty and dirty environments, with smoke all around, beautiful lighting and those freaking soldiers rushing at you with their massive weapons.
And all those special effects and animation and you always want to move forward to fragg these Helghasts and see some awesome warscenes ! And movie-like Sci-Fi game.
Unlike Killzone,In Crysis I could be a lil bit annoyed turning around on a giant isle waiting to find my way....But hey that's just my opinion.
But we' ve only seen a part of those two games and yeah I know Crysis doesn 't only take place on the big Isle.
And Killzone won't probably only have the dark city, hope to see more freaking environments of the Helghan planet.
Crysis = Beautiful , masterpiece , Freedom of action. what to ask more for a video game ?
Killzone = amazing atmosphere, warfare ambiances , Big war. For fans of war games.

At this stage at least. I will hold judgement till we see the final build of kZ2. Crysis looks insane, there is no doubt about it but may god help your wallet, if you want to play it at the graphical level they show. Also, noteworthy thing to point out is that NONE of the Crysis videos have even a 1/3rd of the amount of action on screen at once as that KZ2 video did.
