PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork upgrade: Tuesday 08 May
Over the next few weeks, some new and exciting changes will take place in the PLAYSTATIONŽStore. In preparation for this, both PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork and PLAYSTATIONŽStore need to be taken offline for a short while to allow us to carry out the upgrade and maintenance work.
This is scheduled to take place between 16:00 and 19:00 BST (17:00-20:00 CEST) on Tuesday 8th May 2007.
If you are already logged into an online game during this time, you will most likely find that you can continue playing as normal, but you will not be able to log in or start a new game until full service has been restored. You will also not be able to access the Store during this maintenance window.
We are hoping to complete this work in as short a time as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. But remember that these enhancements are paving the way for new and exciting content that we have planned for the Store!

Is this only Europe? I'm betting it has to do with movie / show downloads.

I think it's global, they wouldn't need to take it down for three hours just to add PS1 games to the EU store...

Any upgrades needing server shutdowns have to be considered major upgrades. Can't even imagine what the will be changing, hopefully it will get a bit more professional look for starters.

Skynet is coming!
they tell us there will be upgrades, but we don't know what they are. so what is the use- other than the MS additions?
PS. are they making more of a fuss about this particular update- which would lead us to believe something substantial is coming- or is it your normal weekly update?

If by normal you mean a Killzone demo, then yes. LOL.

yeah, I guess it's pretty substantial if they have to take the servers offline. I don't want to speculate it to death for it to only be things no one notices or can appreciate. Maybe it's cosmetic changes? We'll just have to wait to see if there's an appreciable difference on our end. Maybe they're making the servers run faster? Time will tell. Only 4 days from now.

oh, how I wish...
I also wish I can fly and breath underwater. there is more chance of the latter happening than the first.:monster:

hmm, I didn't know that they didn't go offline before. I thought this time they would only be offline for longer.
but as you said, the change may not even be noticeable. in any case, this isn't happening a few months from now, we'll know in a few days.
PS. how many bet the changes are to accommodate for Home? no, that doesn't mean a 'home' icon will appear for everyone, but to make the infrastructore necessary to handle it. ;)

^my thought, 'paving the way for new and exciting content' sounds like infrastructure to me.

SingStar is getting ready to launch, so I assume this upgrade has to do with Sony BGM music and possibly Sony Pictures. I also believe the interface my be slightly different in some places.

it would be nice if the PS store would go universal.

I'd like them to take a leaf out of nintendo's book and do weekly PS1 games. Take a chunk out of the network though, hence network upgrade.

woops, apparently i can't read a 24hr clock. BEtween now, and three hours from now
Network is down
It can't be down already  At least not because of tomorrow's upgrade, unless they're getting ready now and interrupt the service briefly because of it.

The store is a lot faster and you do not have to double press X if you select something with the analog stick! (finally fixed!)
And the download speed is a LOT faster! I download demos etc. with 500kB/s! oO (that's the maximum bandwith of my internet connection)
Nothing new online, though. -_-

Maybe they had to include more servers to the network, so they can store the 4-5 GB demo of Lair and Killzone. :P

Two new things on the japan store.
a 311MB "Dramactic photo advert"
Cos they really are trying to sell PS3 in Japan as a device to show your photos on. Oh dear god help us....
Some anime trailer I think. Summer Holiday 20th Century 3. 78MB

perhaps they have readied PSN for something else... HOME?

Everytime a major update/demo comes out on this thing it grinds to a halt, an upgrade of the main servers was badly neeeded.
That's all I think, keeping up with the bandwidth demands which are getting frickin' huge.

Plus, considering this is still relatively early in the PSN life cycle, slow downs now definately would need a server upgrade
Also, i japan.. theres some new way of payment apparently, *not playstation cards, but sounds a little like it*

My guess is that they also had to get ready for the launch of SingStar, which will put some pressure on the network.

They've made a big deal about being able to download tracks for Singstar and other online functionality (sharing your own videos for example). Perhaps this infrastucture update was required for those features to work when Singstar is released.

With the PS eye can you upload videos and pictures on the store??
BruceWayneIII
05-08-2007, 11:01 PM
^Not to the store. Those things happen via the game's interface, but it's a part of the PSN. Also, approximately 300 songs will be available to download, some of them includes SD or HD music videos.

what they need to add to the store is the ability to stream videos...all the downloading is a lil annoying
