how come none NONE of the reveiw sights taklked about GTA4 glaring lockup problems BS media. or the pitch black lighting. jesuscrist need a flashlight sometimes at noon.

im stuck on one mission cause i keep losing a guy cause i can't see the fucking doors! they need to fix some shit its ruining the game.

like burnout small problems can turn into major fusturation.

First thing I did was bang up the brightness and contrast, it's almost unplayable without that, only PS3 game I have like that.

Haven't had any freezes on the censored Kiwi edition I rented or the US Edition I bought after putting 2 hours of game playing into each.

So far I'm pretty lukewarm on it. I understand why the game on PS2 had a bad framerate, it was very ambitious for the machine. GTAIV doesn't have that excuse, it should have been hand tuned for a rock solid 30 fps, even if that meant turning off a few graphics effects. It does seem like playing a basic driving / shooting / darts / bowling / Gears type game with bad graphics, but it's GTA so it's OK... Or is it? Don't buy the 10/10 either. I think if you had thrown 100 million at Insomniac or Naughty Dog and asked them to take care of all the technical aspects of an exclusive PS3 GTA game they'd have done a much better job.

Not too crazy about it. Compared to GTA3 GTA4 is a huge letdown. GTA3 was far more deserving of 10/10s than this.

My hopes are with Infamous, or even Saints Row 2. I'll play through GTA4 because I don't have any other big games to play, but I do feel this backs up many of my feelings about how the game has been compromised for multi-platform.

Just happened to me aswell where it wouldn't load past the loading screen where it says previous mission I done. Went to my brothers user and loaded up his save to see if it loads which it did, tried mine again after and it has just loaded up successfully. Hope it will be able to go past the cutscene where it froze now.

yeah, at some point in final testing, someone had to have pointed out the freezing (it had to have happened several times within just a couple days), and they said "eh, we can't push the release date back any further. it's no big deal. we can probably patch it later."

The mission called "Three Leaf Clover" aka "the bank job" is fracking impossible to complete. I have read the guide from IGN, but it does not help a bit. Everybody can take a lot of hits from an rifle before they shut up, but the swat guys are just a big clusterfrack. Sure, headshots, but is there time to freeaim?

And the lolpops takes to much time to trow, then bounce and later detonate, maybe I could try the RPG?
I will probably only kill my pals in the panic. Or myself even. I suck.

Also, I had found a rare car. I went to clean it. Then a punk drives into me, as I drive extremely carefully to park outside my penthouse. I get so pissed at him, so I get out of the car, open his door and throw him out, take out my pistol and shoots him very slowly, one shot at the time, and really enjoys it when he dies a beautiful death. So not only do I suck, now I'm sick too...

Yea it took me about 3 times to finish that mission. I just threw grenades at the police cars and look for the medical packs on the way, found two. try staying behind cover as much as you can. The hardest part I found was getting away. The first time my car died on me.

Damn! Well since my dad wants to be a bitch and take my Internet away, I'll be spending alot of time offline now for single player. MP is just too sweet to let up. I got a few achievements already for it like 20 pistol kills in one ranked match! I'm unstopable online!

havent had any freezing issues yetYea..but relative to any other GTA its pretty great lol. The animation, the lighting, and the overall environment is on a another level imo (reletive to past GTA's). Which really lends to the overall realism and atmosphere of the game.

Yep, the problems began for me too. It freezes whenever I select "Multiplayer" in the cell phone. The simple fix was to sign off my PSN name and not play multiplayer until it's fixed, unfortunately. Glad single player is so great though to hold me over.

The game would also freeze while loading if I was signed in, so basically I have to stay logged out when I play GTA4 until this is fixed.

I'ma use this post to make a statement about GTA IV.

You can bet I'm enjoying GTA IV. Easily (maybe...) the craftiest game ever created. Ambience, style, graphics, narrative, action.... all A+ from me. Damn... the game is good. I mean screw it. I haven't even though about playing a different action game, let alone a different GTA game.

All the haters who can say 'GTA's formula is boring for me now...' Honestly, what formula? What does this GTA IV have to do with any previous formula in any meaningful way?

Imagine if Polyphony actually got a damage system into their game Gran Turismo that was according to their liking and modified car performance in some disgustingly realistic way.

That's what GTA IV has achieved for GTA. That's how much of an overhaul GTA IV has had. That's how much massive change has occurred.

GTA isn't a stupid sandbox game. GTA is a freedom of choice game. A love child of overprotective yet completely glorious parenting and polishing of features and game mechanics that just ***king work. And like every perfect thing, it's not actually perfect. But.... it ***king smokes every other game on next gen shelves.

The game is amazing, so much to do. I finished the game at 68&#37;. Theres a load of things left for me to do like finding those infested flying rats and landing all the jumps. There are more random strangers encounter missions that I have to do and I've yet to do stuff like vigilante missions or paramedic missions.

The game has a few places where you have to make a discision wheather to kill some one or let them live and sometimes its hard to choose. The end credits is long, like real long and when they said that there where about 1000 people working on the game they weren't kidding. Man I think im gonna explore every nook and craney of this game on foot or something. Definitely a top notch game.

Oh yeah and that not loading from intial start bug caught me before the last mission. My brother told me he had difficulty starting the game and I was like shoot that better not happen to me, next time I tried loading the game it didnt work. I snaped since I knew I was near the end of the game, then I remembered I had like 3 diffrent saves that are reletively close in the story since I like to see where the split paths go. I deleted my main save which was 4 mins away from the auto save and restarted the game. Good thing I had multiple saves. For anyone who encounted the problem(and restarted) or to anyone yet to, make sure you have a separate save when your done your game session. Hit up your safe house.

I was so fucking mad, cuz I knew if I got into it, I would've been able to get away from the cops in no time. Retrying the mission now. My last one before I hit the sack.

I played a bit of multi-player and it kicked ass....to a degree.

It was quite laggy, but it was fairly fun and I completely owned.

Somebody kept trying to run me over, but I shot him in the head with the assault rifle. He tried doing this a few more times but only succeeded once. Ramming into other players when they don't suspect it is cool. Just rammed into someone and kept pushing their car while firing at them. I was lucky enough to get a clean headshot while driving.


Does anyone know how I can grab on to moving vehicles so that I can fly like the wind?

Those who have "lighting" problems with the game... I had the same...

Switch off "full RGB" in the system settings and all the problems go away. Problem is, that it crushes blacks on some TVs (my old one was compatible with full RGB but my new one is not... which makes "sense" as "limited" RGB usually is used for movies anyways.

You can test if your TV supports it using this Picture (ftp://www.burosch.net/pub/Brightness.bmp) (6MB uncompressed BMP). If the blacks under 16 are crushed (i.e. full black, no matter what), then your tv does not support full RGB. After finding this out, I must say, the pictures looks SO much better^^

I have done 67 missions now, total play time of over 25 hours, my longest run without a break being 7 hours.

I know in one earlier mission you could spare the life of that guy hanging over the edge of the building by pressing a certain button but I forgot what that button was. When I was doing Faustin's mission I wanted to spare his life but couldn't figure out if it was possible so I just killed him.

Don't do missions for everybody at once. Complete the guys in order as much as possible. Don't get a new girl before one is on 100&#37;. Do missions on the night when the stalkers are sleeping, and don't save to much, those 6 ours gone make it even worse to keep up.
Stop doing missions and get everybody at 100% or close first. Then you can afford to not answer when they give you a call.

Follow these tips, and the phone calls will be a lot more manageable...

LOL When I won the first race for Brucie, I was trying to take the sports car home and park it to keep, but I kept getting calls from everybody. I was finally able to get it there, though. No sooner do I do that does the SAME sports care appear parked BEHIND me when I come out of the safe house the next day.


That was the only mission I had to re-try like 7 times, ALMOST got pissed off but to be honest, instant retry plus fun = not bad when you fail.
Got the car to stay this time, but there was a clone car already waiting in the parking lot. Cops start wailing on me as I run past them, but I make it. Get inside the car, busted a mad U-turn, pedal to the medal and...FUCK! They shot out one of my tires. Turn around, ram one squad car, hop in the yellow clone sports, mad U-turn again, peel out of there and lose the cops within minutes, just like I thought I would if I had a fast car. You can't escape those fuckers in that P.O.S. Patriot. There's no way.

The game is definitely a notch above it's previous game. But it's still the same formula. For me, the biggest problem with the game is how vulgar it is...I mean, seriously, if someone was walking down the street cursing like that I might have to slap them...

The freedom is cool, and it's admirable just how much content is packed into the game as well as it's voice acting. But this is not 10 out of 10 stuff here fellas:whip:

And yeah, I know no game is perfect, I'm saying Gta4 is hardly better than what's been out on next-gen so far. It's incredibly over-hyped, and it's given more kudos for being "maturely" themed than it is for actually being an amazing game experience. After playing Gta3 for about 90&#37; completion, it's hard not to say "been there, done that."

Final verdict for Gta4--pretty good game..severely over-hyped, only a must-have if you've never experienced the franchise before.

And plz, save the hater comments for someone who cares fellas--I'm just telling it like I see it. This game doesn't shine in one aspect, it's simply the amount of content that's packed into the game and how much you can do that makes it interesting. It still doesn't feel like a truly-solid 3rd person action game, nor a driver. Granted, these things are certainly improved, but like I said, if you've experienced the franchise before, it's not as amazing as it once was.

Every time I played a Metal Gear Solid game, it felt completely different. Even MGS2 and MGS3 which were both on the same platform played and felt differently. Gta4 does not feel fresh or knew, just improved. IMO, all the hype the media and forums are spitting out about this game, that's just unacceptable. If it wasn't so hyped, I wouldn't be this harsh. But since it is, I say screw the hype, and wait for a greatest hits release lol:spit:

I think what makes GTA IV great is the level of detail they put in it. Like the garbage trucks coming early in the morning with guys on the back of it. and the lighting is some of the best in any game I've seen and at some points when the sun hits the cars just right it looks close to real. Even the feel of the thunder game me a bit of surprise when I first felt it (probably because I haven't had rumble in a while). I think the more people play the more they will see how great it truly is.

Took me like 7 or 8 tries to do it and it was one of those missions where after I did it I was like "hm....That wasn't so hard" lol

Favourite mission: No Leaf Clover
So far anyway, I am 51&#37; through but the atmosphere and the challenge of No Leaf Clover was PERFECT for me, most fun I had gaming this gen, no doubt.

I will be stunned if there is a better mission for me in GTA4.

I think Snow Storm was the hardest for me too. There was one mission I failed miserably at and was like oh fuck this is going to take me forever, and I passed it with no effort the second time, it was one of those lucky or unlucky type missions.

I'm not really sure what my favorite so far is. The No Leaf Clover was pretty fuckin sweet so I suppose I'd have to agree with you on that one Master. So far atleast.

one thing I find quite enjoyable... jumping out of the helecopter while at it's max altitude. the euphoria physics setup really shines then. makes for a very painful landing. GTA Multiplayer: Wait, I'm a Zombie?

Reader Willkiller tipped us to this WTF?!-thread in the Gametrailers forum. In GTA IV multiplayer, apparently someone's turned into a zombie wearing nothing but yellow Rockstar-logo underpants.

There are a few comments indicating gamers have seen zombies in online play, but nothing about transforming into one yet. Theories range from getting killed by a Rockstar employee, to killing a Rockstar employee, to getting the highest ranking.

They quote the official strategy guide (I don't have it) "If you see unclothed characters, look out! Only players who have reached the max ranking of 10 and a few other "special" people get the honor of shooting in their skivvies." But this player says he's only at Level 2. The user's name in the forums is GTA. I couldn't find a PSN ID for him.

On what console do you play this game?

I don't have many fps problems (albeit I had some with huge explosions, but those are to be expected, and some when a carchase got too big, i.e. like a 20 car pileup on the bridge)

And HDR... hmm, I dunno. I calibrated my TV for 6500k white (i.e. "movie" white) and I cannot complain about overdone HDR. At first, I thought the game was TOO dark, but then I found out my new TV (got it a week earlier) doesn't support full RGB and thus crushes blacks. After I found that out, the "standard settings" of the game (i.e. 50% contrast, brightness and saturation) are very well for me.

To me, it seems that a) your console doesn't stream the data fast enough (if PS3, try and format your HDD and reinstall the game (the "hard" way to defragment the HDD), if 360... you are out of luck) and b) your TVs setup is bad. If you have a DVD with the THX Logo on it (i.e. Terminator 2 - 3, Star Wars 4-6, Indiana Jones or The Incredibles), there's a "set up" option to calibrate your tv manually!

Old GTA IV confirmed to be 720p - settles the rumor posted 2 Days Ago

Theres been a nasty rumor going around that PS3 version of GTA IV runs at 640p all started by posters on forum Beyond3D which many news outlets ran as "real" confirmation, more specifically the poster named Quaz.
Quaz who admits to only owning the Xbox 360 version of the game, speculates the PS3 version of GTA IV runs at 640p all from studying raw screenshot output sent to him from Dot50cal (another Beyond3D poster).

Well lay the rumors to rest not only considering Rockstar themselves confirmed both Xbox and PS3 versions to be running in native 720p back in previous issue of EGM during an interview when asked if GTA IV would be running 1080p native,
BUT, Gameradar also confirmed GTA IV to be running in 720p when they were able to capture raw-output video straight in 720p from both versions.
As some of you may know, it is also discussed in Beyond3D forum, raw output ensures the video does not get "up-scaled" and prevent's "post-processing" thus viewing the video in its truest natural form.

"We’ve played both console versions of GTA IV, and took the following video from the opening scene. We captured the raw video in uncompressed 720p, with no post-processing to either stream. Hm? For you they may be, for me, they are not. I am rather tolerant what bad fps is concerned (I was mostly a PC gamer in my early years), but unplayable?? By no means no... Then your console must be broken!

This game runs at 640P... Quaz is VERY reliable (has been right every time up until now) and this has been confirmed (in the case of GTA4) by other people at B3D.

And, to be honest... I don't care... This game looks good and plays good. It is not a competitor for "graphics of the year", but it also doesn't have to...

What I find interesting is, that many reviews state, that the PS3 version looks "better", although it has a lower resolution. Again, according to B3D, the 360 version suffers from dithering, which makes it look... strange.


But on another note... wasn't there some interview stating that this game would not have any loading screens beside at the beginning? Even if you never skip a taxi trip or whatever, there are plenty load screens (like before every cutscene or even if you enter your house in Algonquin)... Not that this is bad (the loading screens are short), but if the 360 version has even only some seconds longer screens, I'd be a bit pissed, everytime I'd have to redo a hard mission (which happens more often, the further go get in the game).

GTAIV is great, but I'm not sure if driving in vehicles is a bit overdone in this build or not. Maybe it has more to do the former platforms not having the tech to fully realise physics the way they normally should behave or maybe it could be that Rockstar simply wanted to make the game more challenging by allowing a moderate amount of inconsistencies or maybe the speed in which you travel is lot faster than it appears. All I know is braking seems rather pointless in this game: on dry pavement does the car continue to slide as if it were on ice. When making a turn, you have to completely let off of your brake.

I haven't tried online yet since I'm currently honing my new abilities, but from what I've experienced in my short time with the game, there is much replay value to be had.

Other than that, there are no issues.
Keep it mind this is the largest fucking game this gen- The pool, darts, bowling, keep in mind most games sell with just those games alone but in GTA4 they are just 'side things'.

If it freezes, well that's bad but keep in mind it doesn't happen to everyone.

And if your TV is too dark- Change the friggin' settings, I can play the game just fine at all times, and so can millions of other people without going "WTF I CANT SEE!" so it's you, not the game.

Complain all you want but to be honest you are all blabbing on with no real substance.

I can take any fault GTA has, I'm not a close minded company jerkers like most of you (when it comes to Sony stuff) and other than the boring start, I simply had no issues with GTA4.

GTA IV: 926,000 copies sold in five days

Chart-Track has released finalised UK sales data for Grand Theft Auto IV's launch date and first full week, showing sales of 926,000 units for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions combined.

Day one sales were 631,000 units. The first week sales were spread across five days. According to Chart-Track, GTA IV software revenue is bigger than the entire software market revenue of any week so far this year after the first week of 2008.

Chart-Track also reported that the first week of GTA IV software units has already surpassed all but the top three All Formats titles of 2007 - FIFA 08, Brain Training and Call of Duty 4.

514,000 copies were sold for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and 413,000 copies were sold for Sony's PlayStation 3 - a split of 55 per cent to 45 per cent.

Chart-Track is reporting that GTA IV's launch had almost the same effect on console hardware sales for both systems - with PS3 hardware sales up 127 per cent from the previous week and Xbox 360 hardware sales up 125 per cent.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which launched on 29 October 2004, sold 501,000 copies on its first day and 677,000 units during its first week - which consisted only of two days. At the time it was released, the PS2 had an installed base of approximately 6.6 million.

San Andreas still holds the day one and week one record for the individual format, but GTA IV is the new record holder for all formats.

I had my first real WTF moment in GTA today. I was going along killing the pigeons and got a star so I got in my vehicle trying to evade the cops and I see a cop going towards a one of the SUVs so I stop and watch as the cop jack the SUV and started to follow me. Also after some 26 hours of playing I got arrested for the first time.

In both those versions, hookers are taken out and some of the 'adult' jokes from the cut-scenes are edited (I'm not sure if they are edited out or just expressed in a less adult manner).

Rockstar and Sony plans to patch the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV today to improve the multiplayer experience.

Speaking to Eurogamer, a Sony source explained that the patch would help by "reducing the loads on the servers at GameSpy and hopefully the completely random hangs that some users have seen".

PS3 owners who bought GTA IV last week have had to endure problems connecting to the multiplayer service almost from day one.

What's more, some reported random crashes, for which Rockstar suggested that erasing game data and reinstalling as a possible solution.

This week, UK chart monitor Chart-Track reported that 926,000 copies of GTA IV were sold during its first week on sale here - with 413,000 of going to PS3 owners.

Well if you really want it skip the patch (for whatever reason), as Omegacell said, just disable internet on PS3 and it won't be able to get patch.

The game should still open obviously.
Otherwise they just stopped people without the internet from playing GTA4.

Well, I'm Croatian so I can shed some light on this matter.

Croatian and Serbian are almost identical languages(in the former state of Yugoslavia the official language was so called Serbian-Croatian,even though Slovenians and Macedonians have their own languages),so when we "want" a surname to end with k,we write it,in this case, Belik.
Since Niko's surname is Bellic that is definitely pronounced Belich and we would write it simply Belić(with a little diagonal stripe on top which means it's pronounced "ch").

I saw a couple of cut-scenes in which it's obvious he is Serbian so there you have it.

I don't know if that's Rockstar's mistake or if they did it on purpose as a 'thing' (you know how most Western people get foreign names wrong).

FINALLY.

THE ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. Just got off the phone with T2 support. The issue that is causing the freezing is actually two separate issues. One is the network problem that the newer PS3's are encountering however the older model, launche units are experiencing an entirely different problem. The launch version of PS3's used a different chip that could run PS2 and PS1 games without emulation. This chip is conflicting with the game code and cause GTA4 to freeze. The T2 representative told me that the fix will indeed not be exclusively in the form of a patch. There will probably be a patch for the issues relating to the network and things that the newer PS3's are facing however.. the older launch 60GB versions and possibly the 20gb, i didnt ask, will require a firmware upgrade that will allow GTA4 to run on the older chip. This firmware upgrade, he said, could be available anytime between tomorrow morning and "as soon as possible" as he put it. The issue is deffinately being adressed and it seems as though they have found what the problem is. So guys lets hope this works and spread this around because this came directly from my 25 minute conversation with T2 support that I just got finished with.

Well i had some really bad slow downs but they never destroyed the gameplay.
One really strange particular example is, i was on that oil tanker "ship" and shot on the pipes (unfortunately nothing happend lol) and everytime i hit one of the pipes the framerate dropped to ca. 10 fps.
It was like slow motion. lol
Another strange drop was in a mission.
Huge shootout everything was fluid and as i wanted to escape with a car i hit a box that was on the ground, it bursted and everything was in slow-mo.^^
The only part in the game where i get a slow down everytime is at night on one of the bridges from the first, to the second island (not the Broker Bridge).
But well, it still does look awesome with the lighting. 8)

Just to clear things up, I have played the series since GTA1....i AM a huge fn. Algonquin is too demanding for the system, nightime is quite smooth, in bright daylight though, particularly with a 3/4 star chase the fps dips to below what a SA chase would have been.

This is really evident on Algon, not sure bout Alderney yet. There are some strange slowdowns while turning corners - not dramatic- but noticeable all the same.

I have friends who have all 'whined' about the same thing so I know its not just my high standards...I even did a total wipe of the HD and reloaded...

I've tried the mission 5 times, 4 times I failed because of him dying and once because some guy kept shooting me out of no where (took me ages to find where he was shooting from).

They keep coming from left and right and some even run up the catwalks again! brbrasbabra.
This is going to take patience lol

Saves the game for me....am peeved at the lack of interiors though, would of been nice to have a large mall to massacre a few peds...is the hospital interior in Broker the only fair sized interior ?

I found it TOO easy (if done right^^), but VERY fun^^. I just thought... cars plus grenades equals MAJOR fun :D And it did^^ Man, THEN the game started chugging :D

What I find a bit... weak of this game, is the VERY scripted persuits... Sometimes you shoot a car and hit 200 hits and it never explodes and the other time it just explodes (destroying your "tribute"...)

Thank for the tip man, yeah that's what I try to do but the other guy is a bit too keen on death so rushes in saying "COVER ME!" so I'm like "WTF NO!!" and then he dies, mission failed.

As I said, most of the times I fail because of him dying.

Just did it and made it on the first try.
Almost died because one guy hit me to often with his AK and
Phil was right next to a barrel that explode but he survived.
Oh and i did the mission at a perfect time, at the end where you escape with the boats it was
sunset and the atmosphere is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo great with those incredible water effects!

As for GTA, I made it to Algonquin last night. The resemblance to Manhattan is so strong I'm literally not even going to attempt to use the game's borough names anymore. This is a goodthing :-D
