cutscene video lockup ?

I had this same problem so I called Rockstar. The lady on the phone told me to erase the game data (the original install and the game saves) and then start over. I did what she told me to do and the freezing problem went away.

And can the person who made this thread please include this information in the original post?

Wow, i drove in an SUV with full speed downhill, i smashed a car, it flipped, hit a wall and the tank got on fire, the whole back left of the car burned.
It still layed against the wall so the driver crawled out of the car, burning, climbed over the car and died.

That was one of the brutalst scenes i have seen in a game, the animation made it look so realistic.
Damn cant believe its uncut here in Germany.

No freezing (yet) but a couple of weird glitches. After installing the game, the sound cut out, so I have no idea what was said up until after the first cut scene. Also, during the first cut scene there were some very obvious anti-aliasing issues with the rim of the pot (with no sound, I noticed thing like that) and there was a very noticeable stutter in the frame rate (a couple of frames dropped.) I got to the first save point, saved and left the game to check the audio settings. They were exactly as I had left them, and I had sound when I re-started the game.

Other then that, the game is great.

hahaha, every time i come into this thread someone has said what i was going to say just before me....

Same thing happened to me - i had one or two small freezes for about a second, and about 20 mins ago it froze for about a full 10 seconds. I did what everyone does, and just sat there staring at an unmoving screen, and as i was about to turn it off, it started going again.... I'm on a 40GB system, so i don't think its the the console, i was almost thinking perhaps its a loading glitch, where it freezes whilst it loads something?! i dunno...

k, i started playing it and its pretty good. I just finished off the loan shark in the building by pushing him into the water. I'll go online tomorrow but the game is pretty good. It reminds me a bit of gt sa but i wish the game would move along faster. My brother watched me played and he said it reminded him of the sims but with missions lol. Oh well, im just enjoying the experience.

As for pop ups, only saw one noticable one as i was driving. Jaggies are there but doesn't bother if you don't pay attention to it. I like how the did the intro, very movie like. The only radio station i like atm is San Juan station, got good music on it.

After messing around with the tv settings and the in-game display settings, the asetheics are looking much better now. I'm still tweaking them trying to get that perfect look to it but it's much better than what it was orginally. Anyone having issues with the look of the game should do the same.

Another thing I highly recommed is to change the on-foot camera to the behind the shoulder view. For some reason for me this brings out the colors more and even hides the jaggies that use to be more on display with the further out view. Plus it's just more immersive having an eye level view of the world.

Love the realistic adult tone of the game so far. The story is coming along nicely and the voice acting is great as usual when it comes to Rockstar. Niko is a refreshing character, there is something dark yet normal about him and I like that his actions are not over the top.

I haven't tuned into the radio much so I can't really say I like it or dislike it. It will be a personal preference really. I do appreciate the variety of the stations as there really is something for everyone. Although nothing will top Vice City's radio for me. The picture below is from my cellphone.

really enjoying the game so far. The city pulls off this really nice vibe....this is something I felt that SA lacked. Missions are more entwined with the story and it doesn't feel like I'm just doing missions for the sake of doing them. Atleast not the extent it felt like in SA, and the Voice acting is top notch.

Right now I'm just hanging out at different places with roman and putting the screws to michelle after taking her some place nice.

Being drunk is so fun in this game.

www.gamesuniverse.com just shipped my US copy today, so I will get it in 2 days. They have the game on back-order for PS3, so I am glad I finished my order on time after putting it off.

The game has only froze on me once. I was about to take michelle out on a date, I went into the pay n spray forgetting that 3 hours will pass by doing so . I got message saying that the date is off while getting into the car again and thats when it froze.

The game looks nice, but it's really hard to see stuff late in the afternoon. Everything is quite dark.

Played a little through on both versions (ended up buying 360 and renting the PS3 version). For the most part there are small differences. This is personal opinion. Both are plagued by aliasing, the 360 version does look cleaner overall but as stated by reviewers the pop-in is a bit more noticeable. The pop-in issues all together have been grossly over exaggerated. Loading time are as stated a bit longer on 360 as well. Framerate is too difficult to determine between the two titles, it is as if both has issues in different places. Shadows seem to be done differently in the two versions. The lighting for the most part seems to be a color palette difference, given the ability to tweak the settings I cant say one is above the other. Really certain reviews hit the nail on the head with the differences. Overall I think the game is gorgeous despite aliasing issues. At this point I couldnt recommend either version over the other.

I definitely think the title doesnt deserve a perfect 10 and too suggest this in a game that has the same issues as past titles that received a lower score is ridiculous. Though I feel comfortable saying that it is the best game in its genre that I have played.

Driving has changed but not necessarily for the worse. Overall I believe driving is better, but I want a "bumper view". The aiming system is better but far from perfect, both controllers offer shoulder buttons they should have simply set this up for free and auto aim (maybe I can change that havent tried yet).

Character created for the game are well done in the title and plays well into the story of the game.

Havent really played online but once so I cannot comment on it.

Right after I killed Ivan
The one thing Im sure of so far is it deserves an 8, maybe a 9 out of 10 for graphics. The models are super low poly.

Im really trying to love the game, but Im not seeing how it got 10/10

Played for about two hours last night, so far I am really impressed with the game a s a whole. The world is huge and often I find myself putting the cell phone on sleep mode so I can explore rather than continue missions.

Of course there are some issues, although, as a whole the game is awesome.

Says so much about the worth of a game(in good terms) when people are arguing that it doesn't deserve a 10 but a 9 or an 8. Even when the figure 9 and 8 are both regarded as excellent review scores whilst given to a game other than this.

My point is. Whether a 9, an 8 or a 10! Doesn't change the fact that the game will sell bajillions of copies. Stop posting why it's not a 10. I don't wanna hear about that. If you haven't enjoyed the game till now, I'm bloody sure you haven't driven yourself out of the linear path yet. Go out, explore GTA without the story. Do crazy jumps n shit, nab cars, kill prostitutes or grannies. Then come back n frikkin tell us the fun factor.

God, no more why it's not a 10 post. Please?

Ted Price, Jamil Moledina are some of the people answering GTA related questions. Inter-fcuk-esting read!

GTA: Industry Perspectives

What did opportunistic politicians, fear-mongering media types and ambulance-chasing attorneys have to target before Grand Theft Auto? Oh, that's right - they had Mortal Kombat, Night Trap and Carmageddon. But Grand Theft Auto has become so ingrained into popular culture - and into the ongoing debate over videogames and violence - that it is hard to remember when the controversial franchise wasn't with us.

The series certainly has come a long way since it debuted in 1998. Ten years and 70 million units later, the game is making its first appearance on the current generation of game consoles and is almost assuredly going to be one of the top-selling games of 2008 in spite of - or perhaps partly because of - its controversial nature.

We asked a cross-section of games industry professionals to share their thoughts on one of the most popular videogame franchises of all time.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: Were you familiar with the top-down games of 1997-1999 before playing GTA III?

David Amor: I remember the media outcry a little better than I remember the game.

Frank O'Connor: I certainly was, back when it was DMA Design. Scottish gamers represent!

Jamil Moledina: Yes, that team has been innovating with great games since Rockstar North was DMA Design. Dave Jones had built an amazing development team that released engrossing titles like Blood Money and Lemmings before the first Grand Theft Auto.

Grand Theft Auto brought the anti-hero to games through humour, which was a new idea in the late 1990s. I really enjoyed this title, and it brought a jolt of absurdity to an otherwise consistently earnest landscape of games.

David Perry: Of course I had played the original version of GTA. It was cool for it's time, but my heart has always gone out to games like Driver or even the old arcade game "Chase HQ" - driving games where you really felt like you were pushing it, either chasing or being chased, above and beyond just getting the fastest time. That feeling of being at your limits is cool.

Servan Keondjian: I played GTA 1 on PS1 for about an hour and dropped it.

Ted Price: Nope. GTA III was my first exposure to the franchise.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: Did you recognise how GTA III's open-ended sandbox gameplay could or would shape gaming, or did you underestimate its influence?

Ted Price: Speaking for myself only - not the Insomniac crew - I definitely underestimated how much GTA III would influence game design. And I'm not sure who coined the term "sandbox" but whenever I hear it, "like Grand Theft Auto" usually follows in the same sentence.

David Amor: I might be getting my gaming history confused but I recall there were other open-ended sandbox type games before GTA III. I think it was the game's subject matter and authenticity which was more influential.

Jon Van Caneghem: I’ve always been a fan of open-ended, sandbox-style gameplay. Providing both a linear story to progress through, and an open sandbox world to play in was a tenet of the Might and Magic RPGs I created, and to see that done in GTA III, with the amazing production quality they achieved, was very impressive.

Frank O'Connor: Absolutely. I have very little time to play games, and an even shorter attention span. The fact that I could dive in, smash a few cars, run amok and then resume my original mission with little penalty or confusion, was a real godsend for someone of my spastic mental acuity. I could also tell, even then, that the game's wildly spinning moral compass would create both ardent followers and horrified crusaders.

Jamil Moledina: To be honest, it wasn’t the sandbox gameplay itself that I found groundbreaking, but rather the overall narrative experience that really broke the mold of what games can do. I mean, a sandbox without a reason to play in it is just an academic exercise. Rockstar North’s execution has to be credited with bringing the worlds that inspired GoodFellas, Miami Vice, Boyz N the Hood, and Eastern Promises to the game controller. Capturing that zeitgeist and giving people the ability to live in it is what really moved the needle for the industry.

Servan Keondjian: For me the open game play originally came from games like Driver which impressed me technologically, especially as driver 1 and 2 were on PS1. GTA III took a leap forward with the way the game play seemed together on multiple levels and how it was so easily accessible to a wide audience. At the time. I remember thinking developers wouldn't copy it - publishers just wouldn't give them the time or budget to pull something like that off.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: Were you immediately hooked, or were you initially unimpressed?

Servan Keondjian: I liked it straight away - it was obvious this was a serious piece of work.

Jon Van Caneghem: I was hooked immediately! I spent a considerable amount of time just looking around the game world and trying to find new jumps.

Ted Price: At the risk of sounding like a heathen, I wasn't initially hooked. I'm a big fan of great graphics and GTA III wasn’t breaking any new ground with its visuals. So I began playing the game with low expectations. But the game eventually won me over mostly because I loved driving around and trying to run people over.

Jamil Moledina: I felt I was playing something special from the get go. Again, it was for me the story and how the technology enables a completely freeform way to access the story that was the hook.

David Amor: If I'm honest, I was initially unimpressed. It wasn't my kind of game so it almost passed me by. I was evaluating Renderware at the time - a middleware solution that they had used, too - so I spent more time looking at the game's engine than playing the game.

Frank O'Connor: Oh I was hooked. It was absolutely liberating. The genre may be dead wrong for comparison, but very few games other than GTA III and Tetris let me sample small chunks of the experience at my own pace. GTA's free roaming experience, complete with linear tasks and non linear "jobs" was perfect. Small, digestible bites.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: What was it about the game that impressed you the most?

Jamil Moledina: The GTA titles’ most impressive characteristic to me is their ability to transport you into an internally consistent and self-sustaining world. In most fiction, there’s usually something that breaks the suspension of disbelief, or you get the sense that the world is written so lightly that it’s only there to serve the needs of the protagonist. Not so here.

Ted Price: Nothing shocking here but for me it was the "go anywhere, do anything" feel. Designing a game with so few obvious design boundaries and not having it fall apart is sheer genius.

David Amor: The thing that impresses me most about the GTA series is its authenticity. So many games try and feel like they come from the street but they just don't ring true. I won't pretend I know what's street and what's not, but it works for me.

Jon Van Caneghem: The well-designed "sandbox-ness" struck me the most. Being framed in a modern setting made it instantly accessible and allowed people to experiment with things they would never think to do in real life - jumping cars, ridiculously reckless driving, and unbounded exploration to name a few.

David Perry: That taste of complete freedom was addictive, but I still think people missed just how remarkable it was. For every good game, there are a slew of clones - but with the first GTA, people just couldn't copy it. It was absolutely state of the art. Years later people still struggled to catch up.

Servan Keondjian: I was impressed by the attention to detail and the effort that had gone into making the whole thing consistent in all aspects of the play experience, of which there were many. That is hard to do well, and has often not been achieved by others who followed.

Frank O'Connor: Oddly enough, the graphics. They weren't state of the art at a macroscopic level, but if viewed in the context of the game's terrifying scale, they were sort of amazing.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: Were you concerned with the controversy and negative publicity that the series generated?

Ted Price: Despite the negative press GTA got, it definitely did incredible things for our industry. It had a tremendous effect on overall sales not only for the PS2 but for all consoles as more and more non-gamers began picking up controllers to try out the game. And like no other game, it demonstrated that games had finally grown up.

But it also shined a spotlight on an issue crucial to our industry’s survival - that as works of art, games have a clear right to the same first amendment protection as other media.

And let’s face it, for the past 10 years our industry has been a lightning rod for all those looking to blame society’s ills on someone else versus looking in the mirror. Even if GTA hadn’t come along we’d still be fighting to protect our rights to express ourselves creatively as artists. However, I think GTA III was extremely important in galvanizing our own industry into standing up and responding to the narrow-minded measures being proposed by poorly informed and opportunistic legislators.

David Amor: I'm always a bit concerned with games that, whether justified or otherwise, re-enforce the videogame stereotype.

Jon Van Caneghem: Yes, very concerned. After GTA III hit, the first question I’d get from people when I told them I worked in the Gaming Industry was "You’re not one of those people that make that Grand Theft Auto thing, are you?"

Frank O'Connor: I was an interested observer. I worked in the games press at the time - we were covering it as critics and as usual, watching the mainstream media froth at the mouth with a baffling lack of context and expertise.

I imagine this happens with other forms of entertainment, but nowhere can you find quite as much exaggeration and willful ignorance as in the mainstream coverage of games during that period. Things are marginally better now, but expect plenty of controversy ex nihilo for this one too.

Jamil Moledina: Frankly I wasn’t that concerned about the controversy around the GTA series. It seems that daring artists always fall under fire from some segment of the population looking to ascribe their problems to people telling make-believe stories.

It’s an emotional argument that gets play in the national media, but most people recognize it as the artistic expression that it is. If we honor The Godfather, GoodFellas, and The Sopranos as brilliant works of art, then it seems the height of prejudice to exclude Grand Theft Auto III for its subject matter.

Servan Keondjian: Not really, it got people thinking about where the boundaries should be and that can't be a bad thing. It was obvious people who had not actually played the game were complaining about it.

David Perry: For me, this game is not about the negativity that surrounds it. Let's face it - if GTA sucked, nobody would care less about the edgy material it contains. But it IS good, it's very fun, and don't let any of the negativity and bad PR decisions by Take 2 ever stand in the way of just how important this title is in the history of the video game industry.

Q: GamesIndustry.biz: Did the game's success/sales figures surprise you?

David Amor: Yes. A friend was working on San Andreas and he mentioned that they thought it might generate about half a billion dollars in revenue. That's an incredible figure.

Frank O'Connor: Yes. Not so much the initial sales, but the growing popularity and seemingly endless "legs" the game had. It was almost viral. Most games launch, sell like gangbusters, then plateau and eventually languish. GTA III just kept on motorin'.

Jon Van Caneghem: The initial sales didn’t surprise me because the game was great, the production values were high, and it released at the exact right time of year. I was very surprised at how much the adoption of the franchise has grown, however. I didn't expect a Mature rated franchise to become as big as GTA has.

Servan Keondjian: Well, it made sense after I had played it, it was a great game and those are just rare anyway.. Add to that the negative PR which gave it an additional cool factor and it had to happen.

Ted Price: Absolutely. It was a good lesson for any of us who value anything else - like graphics, animations, etc. - over solid and innovative design.

Jamil Moledina: Yes the sales figures did strike me as bizarre. They just underscored the feeling that this experience touched a nerve with a broad public, and was being played by people outside the typical core demographic.

This, like the Gran Turismo and Guitar Hero franchises, was drawing an audience and fan base far beyond the scope of PlayStation Underground or GameStop Edge Card members. And that can only be a good thing for the industry.

* David Amor was a producer for Electronic Arts UK and is currently Creative Director for Relentless Software.

Lately there have been numerous reports of PSN servers crashing under peak times and various other related issues. Im not sure if this is continuing currently or the issue you are having though.

From what I am reading on various forums is that tech support from Sony and R have suggested that the issue will be dealt with shortly (if it hasnt been already).

yea that still baffles me though, R* and Sony knows how big GTA IV will be on the network. And yet they still have network issues.

I had it freeze once, as I was dropping Mallorie and Michelle off.

Then, for the first time in gaming history, it came back.

haha! The same exact thing happened to me as well. It froze on me, then it unfroze! I was like wow, did that just really happen?! I haven't had any more issues with the game after I deleted it and re-installed it. weird....

*crosses fingers* that I won't run into anymore freeze zones...

Nuh uh, not interested.

GTA has pretty much run its gamut with me after San Andreas. Even with this new one, there are some visual upgrades and a few good gameplay tweaks, but I’m not seeing anything to wet myself over the way San Andreas did yrs. ago. I’ve also seen that the control-animation inputs are still poor when fighting as well here at the office *shrugs*. There were a ton of guys crowded around the TV when we got our version yesterday.

Oversaturated and from what I’m seeing, somewhat overhyped. GTA has run its course with things it can do from a gameplay/design perspective by now. Although it still looks like a good game and always entertaining. as much as im currenly enjoying GTA4 i have to agree

its not having the same impact with me as the GTAIII did, and many of the things that fusturated me with the earler one still exist.

In addition:

According to a report on MCVUK on Chart Track's UK sell through figures, Grand Theft Auto IV sold over 609,000 copies in the UK on its first day of sales. The game sold 335,000 units on the Xbox 360, topping Halo 3 which sold 266,000 units on its first day. Sales on PS3 for GTAIV were 274,000 units day one, easily making GTAIV the top selling PS3 debut in the UK.

The previous record for an opening day debut was 501,000 units in the UK, held by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

According to Vgchartz sell through data, Xbox 360 has sold 2.18 million units in the UK, while PS3 has sold 1.19 million units in the UK through April 19, 2008. That means the day one attach rate for PS3 is about 25% using figures through the 19th, while the attach rate for Xbox 360 is about 15% using figures through the 19th.

Driving has changed but not necessarily for the worse. Overall I believe driving is better, but I want a "bumper view".

i think driving has changed for the worse. it's nearly impossible to make a 90-degree turn now. you have to slam on the brakes way, way before, and try to slow down, but you're still not able to slow down enough. both ebrakes (supposedly there's a difference) just send you in circles.
maybe realistic, but annoying as hell.

the camera can be annoying too because it won't stay behind you and aims for a more cinematic/loose view. around turns or u-turns you'll end up with a view of the side of your car...

it's also annoying that you walk by default. have to hold X. nobody is gonna walk for me that a foot, so it's retarded. but they wanted to give it the "realistic" vibe again...

last, all of the radio stations suck. and to top it off, there's no option to have every car use the same station as what you last used (as in GTA:SA). so if you don't want to listen to the worst of it, you have to change stations every time you get in a car.

Just get used to it.....Because you will with time, don't worry.

Seriously man, all valid complains if you.......Don't want to enjoy things and just looking things to bitch about but I personally love everything you've complained about.

And just FYI, I do sometimes find myself walking when the weather looks 'artistic'.
I walk and get cinematic angles, it looks very stylish and gives the game a great vibe.

So yeah, I've recently met Playboy X and opened second island, the game got 498067390867289 times better.
I like in GTA how the further you go, the more interesting it gets, instead of it getting more repetitive.

IT was a slow start I'll admit and that's my only complaint but other than that.....Great experience, just....perfect.

I was never planning to buy GTAIV and now after all the hype and delays, I know it was a good decision. I'm sorry that Sony didn't secure exclusive rights to GTAIV, it would definitely have been a better game with the extra space on the Blu-Ray and the addition of HDD.

On top of that I think Sony would've given them more dev time, anyway with the next iteration hopefully things will change and they can flush out some issues.

i think they're perfectly valid complaints. because there's just no sense in it.
music is important in a game. rockstar knows that, that's why they license so many songs and make a big deal out of the radio stations. but if they don't want to pony up the money to get decent songs as they did in SA, they should at least let me not have to listen to crap every time i get in a car, or try and flip through a dozen stations each time while i'm trying to outrun cops or catch up to somebody. but it's more realistic, and that's all they same to care about this go-around. same reason the controls are sluggish, even if they're less fun.

gnznroses

but anywho, the review scores for the game are just out of line. virtually no game gets 10/10 in all categories, and no game should. gta shouldn't. it's not that radically different. it's not that innovative. and it's not that well polished. good acting, decent graphics, etc, but it's not 10/10 by a longshot.

And I still don't like them^^

The cars don't turn when braking (the front wheels lock... NO car has anti lock brakes), the e-brake is too extreme ...

I like it... I find it better than the earlier GTA games, but I would not rate it 10/10... maybe 9/10...

I actually had an interesting glitch just now... The mobile (and cab display) did not render correctly (the old stuff wasn't cleared... so I had like 10 layers of text^^). I wanted to quit the game and the "3 beeps" reboot was initialized. Seems like a small bug to me though, nothing major.

Man, I am now doing the "Mikhail" missions... And I already begin to hate them

The first, where you have to kill the guy at the Train Station and the other, where you have to kill the Boyfriend... MAN, I always hated those missions in GTA, as they are mostly trial and error, nothing more. And guns are too fucking expensive!!

There's no such thing as a perfect game, because games are made by people, who are imperfect creatures. But 10/10 doesn't mean perfect! So stop interpreting it as meaning it's a perfect game! It means it's a great game, a damn great game, a cut above the rest, and it raises the bar for games to come in at least 3 different ways. It does not mean that it is perfect. But you need some way of expressing that the game is a step above others, even other high-profile games that got 9/10s, or 9.234203892/10s because decimal points in game reviews are cool or whatever-the-fuck. If you have a 10/10 scale, eventually something will warrant a 10! Now if you don't think it was great enough to deserve a 10, that's fine, but 10 =/= perfect, so stop arguing that the game isn't perfect. OF COURSE IT FUCKING ISN'T GENIUS!

NOW STFU ABOUT THE GAME DESERVING OR NOT DESERVING 10s, you've all beaten it to death.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Sells ~2.5 million in the Americas on Day 1

Sixty percent sales of for day one were on Xbox 360

Jacob Mazel

4.30.2008

VG Chartz has today announced that according to their early sell-through data, Grand Theft Auto 4 has sold a record 2.5 million units in its first day of sales. GTA IV has been universally acclaimed upon release and the titles day 1 sales places the title in the upper echelon of industry hits - those that are universally loved by both critics and by casual gamers.

Data for the first day of GTAIV sales shows that the game sold roughly at a 6:4 ratio in favor of Xbox 360 to PS3 in the Americas. While that means the game sold better on Xbox 360, it had a higher attach rate on PS3 - the same story was the case in the UK according to an earlier report by Chart Track.

At $60 per unit for the standard game and $90 for the special edition and around 1/4 of all games bought being at the higher price, Rockstar is looking at around $170 million in day one Americas revenue. For comparison, Microsoft stated that Halo 3 saw $170 million in sales revenue day one so it seems at this point the combined Xbox 360 and PS3 sales for GTA IV are about on par with Halo 3.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl recently sold over 900,000 units in the Americas day one and went on to sell almost 1.6 million units week one. A similar pattern for GTAIV would push the title to over 4 million units in the Americas for week one - we expect the title to have a drop off rate more akin to Smash Brothers Brawl than Halo 3.

Sales have also been brisk in Europe, along with Chart Tracks report of 600,000 copies sold in the UK in one day, VG Chartz estimates that around 1.7 million units were sold across Europe and others on day one - bringing worldwide sales to over four million in just one day - comfortably a record. The format split is roughly a mirror image of the Americas, with around 60% of all European sales being on PS3.

Day one sales for Europe and the Americas combined bring GTAIV to 4.2 million units worldwide, a staggering number, both in units and in revenue.

Stay tuned for more sales updates as the week progresses.

We all know the game is a favorite and amazingly popular in the gaming industry. The first games, were according to many--a step above most other games. So if this one is any better than it's previous iterations, its only natural to assume the score will be high.

I'm just glad I didn't pick it up--bugs seem like there really annoying. I'll probably pick this up the same time i pick up DMC4--sometime in 2009 lol...

When all the nonsense ceases, I'll be happy to hear some honest reviews about the game, story and play mechanics in particular;)

Wow @ the sales, this would have been Sony's month if it was still exclusive...we'll see just how big MGS4 really is tho..

Okey I've finished the game and played maybe 2-3 hours online.
Story amazing
Dont understand you guys whining about the driving for now it actually requires some skills.
I'm just amazed by the physics, never had so much fun in GTA before, pushing people infront of trains and down cliffs and see them fall and hurt them self

This is very intresting for me :). I was right in a way in thinking this tittle might sell better with ps3, because of the history of past GTAs being atleast timed exclusives and so giving it a "GTA-playstation relation". It has sold more as expected on the 360 pushed by the numbers of consoles sold compared to ps3, but not dramaticly, giving the the attach rate clearly in favor for the ps3. It even has actually sold more in EU it seems, where the difference of ps3s and 360s sold is not as big as it is in NA. It will be intresting to see how things develope form here. Glad to see it sell in such numbers it has. Good for R*, Sony and MS!

...I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive :(...I should get it in a few days though.

Not impressed with this at all. Camera angles, combat, driving, running, etc...

I rented this last night for the PS3 and am debating if I'm even going to load it up again.

About the whole perfect 10 debate we are having, here is my opinion. I really don't mind that it got the score because IMO if Zelda: TP is rated 98% then I don't mind one bit if a game of GTA's stature, longevity, quality and online capabilities is rated higher.

Thanks for the update Viper. So in America it sold 2.5 million with a 60% share going to the 360. All the other territories sold 1.7 million with a 60% share going to the PS3. So if I'm reading it correct is this the possible breakdown for day one?

1. American GTA sales = 2.5M (1.5M for 360 & 1.0M for PS3)
2. Everwhere else GTA sales = 1.7M (680K 360 & 1.02M for PS3)

Total = 2.18M for 360 day 1
Total = 2.02M for PS3 day 1

**note** I'm terrible at math and especially percentages so my numbers are probably wrong.

Viper

Thanks for the update Viper. Between America and the UK the game sold 3 million in one day. I wonder how much it did worldwide.

Sorry if already posted
Rockstar working "around the clock" on PS3 GTA 4 fix

No word on when it's coming though, or what's causing the problems.

Rockstar is working "around the clock" to fix freezing issues with GTA 4, Take-Two customer support has told VideoGamer.com.

Following the news (http://www.videogamer.com/news/29-04-2008-8156.html) that some fans have experienced pausing and freezing issues with the game, we called up Take-Two UK customer support to ask if a solution was in sight.

We were told: "A patch is being worked on around the clock to address the issues. It's bound to be. That's how they address this sort of thing. It is being worked on. We're looking into it. You will hear from us if a patch is released. A patch is usually the way it's been done."

We were also given some tips on how to combat the freezing experienced on the PS3 version of the game, including:

Completely remove the game from the system but leave saves behind.

Turn the console off for 15 minutes without any cables plugged in, then turn it on and try again.

Play without access to the Internet.

Turn off the auto save function and the controller vibration setting.

According to Take 2 customer support, "a few cases have resolved themselves" by following these instructions.

When we asked whether we should return our PS3 copy of the game for an Xbox 360 version, we were advised: "That's a decision that's completely up to you."

We were told Take 2 had received calls regarding the technical performance of the 360 version in "a few instances" but "not quite the same amount" as the PS3 version.

He added: "We're trying to remain diplomatic about how we answer those questions. We're just trying to discuss problems on an individual basis."

While the confirmation that Rockstar is looking into the issue will reassure PS3-owning GTA 4 fans, we still have no idea when the fix might become available, or what is causing the freezing issues.

"We don't get that kind of information," said Take 2 customer support. "I'd like to know myself so we could advise people who call us up. We're devoid of information at the moment."

Are you experiencing problems with GTA 4? Has Take 2's advice helped? Let us know in the comments section below.http://www.videogamer.com/news/01-05-2008-8180.html

Game is awesome so far, it has its issues though and it's not a 10 but then again none of the other gta games deserved the high scores they got either. So far its a 9 for me. Main annoyance is not being able to set the camera into a static position if im driving, and the impossible turning while driving...

masteratt
05-01-2008, 02:44 PM
Car driving you'll get used to and although I doubt you can ever twist and turn as easily as previous GTAs, you'll still drive a lot better after a few hours of play.

Motorbikes however........eeeep.
I try to avoid them as much as possible.

Every time I try to get used to them, I end up killing myself or get badly injured.

And people who say money is hard to come by, I wish it was that realistic for me.
When I first opened the 2nd island, I had $30,000 + lol

And I bought suits from that classy clothes shop (in 2nd Island) but I'm not wearing it yet since it 'doesn't feel right'.
Cut-scenes look stupid when a guy in a tracksuit is ordering a guy in a business suit around lol

Anyway, I should get back to playing it, can't get enough of this game :)

Oh and 360 version selling better than PS3 version- Duh. (unfortunately)

^I can't wait to open up that part. I'm 5% in with 5 hours of gameplay lol. I just opened up the little island up top in the map and only have $700 or so bucks :(. I haven't gotten up to speed with the whole beating up and robbing people just it, which is why my money is so low. Plus I haven't done many missions either. Sadly I mostly find myself walking the streets and going near the docks just to view the city skyscrapers in the distance. The game has it's graphical issues here and there but overall and especially the city skyline is so nice.

Do Brucies missions, those give you quite some money :D

I am now at the Escuela guy... dunno how far that is. I am just hoping, that the story pics up a bit (I get bored by it^^ There's nothing "involving" really, except...

When Belgarin (?) comes in with Dimitri... Loved how LJ gave support and the like, seen^^

... I dunno). Are there other women than Michelle? I clicked "date" on all of the women on the internet, yet I didn't get any emails...

Will play now :D

EDIT: I got my DS3 this week too... And I must say the "vibration" is so... well... nothing... I just don't care about it^^

Well that pretty much explains your money situation....I don't get why you sad about having low money....Obviously if you haven't done any missions, you are not going to have much money lol....

I'm playing almost strictly story though I if I don't feel like missions, I call people and do things, I never go on a 'random rampage', I personally found that boring in every GTA though sometimes it's nice I mostly play for the story and once that over, crate my own stories and do side missions and etc.

Doing jobs for Jacob is a pretty good way to get some money, and collecting the vehicles for Brucie get you around $1000 each time. I've just got to the Mallorie (sp?) missions, I think I've got around $25000.

I'm having a great time with it so far. The driving seems to be getting the most complaints at the moment, but I like it. It takes a little getting used to, but after a while it's pretty easy to do the 90 degree turns, like in the old games.

Things that got taken out so don't bother looking for way to them like I did lol:

- Ability to open/close trunks at will (was mentioned in previews but now gone except in special circumstances).
This is why you see AIs placing things in trunks etc but you can't do it yourself! Boo!

- Taxi missions (What the hell happened to these?.....DVD?...¬_¬ Sad to see them go).
This annoyed me the most, I really loved taxi driving and it would have been awesome in this Liberty City.

You also can't do Fire Truck/ Ambulance missions either anymore which is sad.
Police missions they say you can start through the police car computers but I couldn't start it myself :/
But I've never liked those anyway.

So there you have it, now you don't have to stand by the trunk pushing all the buttons and trying combinations wondering how the hell to do it, because you can't.

EDIT:
RUMOURS! now suggest that these will be added via DLC.
IF they do.......Well fuck you Rockstar, keep shit out because of the DVD then give the features to the console with the DVD and leave the PS3 in the cold??
Again- RUMOUR!

First DLC to hit August. We'll find out.

The impression I've got from playing the game a little yesterday and getting my hands wet was that of excitement. The game is well done, but it's not without it's apparent problems. That throws out one review that I read of the game already that made it seem like the game was practically flawless. The game has camera problems and as someone already said...the driving is a little TOO realistic for my tastes. The days of making speedy turns are over. The plus side of this is that it goes both ways. From what I've seen, the same rules apply to the cops. But I have to admit that I haven't free-roamed that much and have been sticking with the storyline. So I don't know what's it's like when you get more than 2 stars...lol. Another problem is the hand-to-hand fighting.

I'm a story fiend more than an action junkie...so I'm pleased with the way the game is so far. I'm just mad my TV can't show GTA 4 in all it's glory...I need to get a flatscreen...because my TV is screwing up with the picture. I was also worried about the automatic driving at first...because I hated it! But I found a way you can change it back to classic and drive manually.

The only taxi missions I know of are the ones that you can do for Roman at the beginning of the game.

As for the police missions, I've done a couple of those. They're not always there, but if you check on the police computer, there are some on there sometimes.

Ok im a bit late, I just finished my coursework, dont have another exam for another 19 days so got "some" time free, Might pick up this game tmrw for my PS3, one question though, ive been looking at the comparison video on gametrailers, why does the 360 version look somewhat sharper and more clearer than the PS3 version. Will it look the same on a SDTV ? I realise this question might have been dealt with a few pages back, but I still can't get a good answer, I mean it looks like the 360 is better, Is there any pay off on the PS3 for the grainy picture? Like better distance drawing or something??
Or is the 360 generally better in the graphics department.

360 = 720p, 2xAA
PS3 = 640p, blur filter (helps to hide aliasing but adds to the overall blurryness of the picture)
-no solid information avaliable on lighting level used on either version (that I am aware of)

PS3 version has slightly better load times and slightly less pop-in. Pop-in is not related to resolution, though the pop-in issue isnt as bad as many reviews make out. Framerate is comparable between the 2 with subjective criticism stating one version trumps the other in either instance. Dithering seems to be a problem on both versions as well without a clear instance on which version is worse (much like fr.). 360 version seems to be subject to more visual "noise" in comparison to PS3 version.

etc etc etc

Not seen enough to claim one version superior over the other. As far as personal opinion: 360 version looks slightly better (higher res., more AA, less blur), PS3 version runs slightly better (less loading/pop-in)

-- Reviewers are split on decision but "most" of them have been recommending PS3 version.

i would advise you to go with the majority vote here. most sites are saying the PS3 has slightly sharper graphics (even though it's supposed to be 640p). they say there is less pop up and pop in, load times are faster and you can have the performance vids in fullscreen... you can't on the 360. that Vid on Gametrailers, by the way, made both versions look the same, but if you look closely you will see the colours on the PS3 look more vibrant in some parts. that was a well put together vid too. they flew the helicopter faster on the PS3, i think to try and force some pop up... but i didn't see any. they avoided a location that demonstrated perfectly the pop up on the 360. when they flew the helicopter over a small island with trees. i saw a vid of someone landing on it and the trees suddenly appear on the 360, but on the PS3 they were there from the highest point.

no argument: it's better on the PS3 (nice to be able to say that at last eh? lol)

Difference in color pallette is primarily due to in-game settings on the game itself (Ps3 version is natively set to darker than 360 version). Color palette can be made near identical through in-game settings.

Been to the point with the helicopter on 360 no popup of trees upon landing. Though in agreement that pop-up is somewhat more apparent on 360 version. Though I havent witnessed pop-in of large structures like trees and what not, most of the pop-in I have witnessed is other details like some shadows, windows, etc.

The timer countdown days for GTA are back already! The mysterious GTA2 is now counting down...well, not so mysterious when you think about it since it blatantly displays the Grand Theft Auto 2 logo there. Find out more about this in our full article.

Rockstar Counting Down Release of GTA2 On XBLA?...and PSN
by: Michael Ogunnubi
May 01, 2008

With Grand Theft Auto 4's recent release on the Xbox 360...and PS3, it seems like Rockstar Games is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the series even further. Evidence found on the Rockstar website showed a countdown timer for May 23, suggesting that Grand Theft Auto 2 may soon get a release on Xbox Live....and PSN.

There was also mention of the Grand Theft Auto London mission pack found on the site. Coupled with the add-ons as well as the original game, it definitely looks like we have more to look forward to from Rockstar in the coming weeks once we've burnt ourselves out gunning down everything in sight as Niko Bellic.

There's been no confirmation so far what exactly the full contents of GTA2 will contain once the timer hits zero, but we'll make sure to keep a close eye out for more details regarding it. Check in with us from time to time for any additional updates regarding this mysterious timer (http://www.rockstargames.com/gta2/frameset.html).

seriously. This makes no sense. I honestly dont see why anyone would go from GTA4 to GTA2 or even start with GTA2 to any other GTA at all.

If anyone buys this (if they charge) on the consoles, they are stupid when they can get it for free. UNLESS some DRAMATIC changes are made....

Why do you always write ans stuff like this? lol

Agreed on all.

Though sometimes when I go "ew what's this? RADIO CHANGE TIME!" when it's not electro 99% of the times it is Radio Broker, there are one or two songs on there like that.

My favourite would have to be the Rock one and the chat ones, they are freakin' hilarious (hey, same as wounding! :p)

And did you guys know the call in questions are actually the people who called when the teaser site for the radio came out with a real number.
It asked "Why does America suck?" and you actually called and answered and they put it into the game radio.

In one of the fan forums, some guy got in!

If you delete the manual one, you are fucked...I think.

Actually you should be fine, I'm pretty sure the game loads the last save depending on time so yeah.
But don't take my word and then come rant at me if you have to start again but I don't see why you should.

I KNOW you can just load the manual one so just check the save of your auto-sav (bottom one) and the main save (top one) and then remembering the times, go back to XMB and delete the auto-save AND THEN turn off auto-saving if you really don't want one more save file in your Save Data.

Phew.
Why anyway, are the save file sizes too big or something? :/

yeh, i wince in big impacts...although it can be annoying at high speeds, particularly if an AI character walks in front of the car just as you pull away, and you have to wait for them to crumple to the ground, lie there, and get back up again...especially if you're wanted.

hi guys, I already asked this, but now the situation is so confused...
72 hours ago I read that the PS3 version of GTA4 is looking sharper and a bit better than the XBox 360 one, while the XBox being more blurry with more cold colours, with the edge to PS3 graphically. Yesterday I read the opposite, I mean the PS3 version been more blurry and running at lower resoluton(640P). any chance to have confirmations/facts about any difference, resolutions, frame rate, pup up, lighting, colours, cause I have both consoles and I don't know which version to get. I know both are great, just to know and get the best, even if it's for a little little margine.

Thanks in advance.

05-02-2008, 06:25 PM
Having played the 360 version, and watching vids of the ps3 version, I have to give the edge to the ps3 for overall graphical fidelity. The image doesn't look quite as muddy, and appears a bit sharper. There is also less issue with pop up in the ps3 version. Normally it could be ignored, but there is certain cases like when I ran into a room and the cardboard boxes I was supposed to use for cover didn't load until a few seconds after I died... things like that really make the pop up issues annoying at times.

As for frame rate, I can't decide but as wounding said, it's a toss up depending on what part of the game you are at on either system.

All in all, the overall performance edge goes to the ps3 version. So, only get the 360 version if you are interested in the DLC, which may eventually make it to the ps3 version in some form or another later on down the line.

Is it just me that finds it funny and ironic that people are debating over graphics of a GTA game?

Jay Gee

I guess with the new Table Tennis engine, it's actually up for debate. Before all that though? Hell, nah.

Diresu
05-02-2008, 09:04 PM
What we should be debating is how come GTA can use the Table Tennis engine and yet have pool, darts and bowling mini-game but not a table tennis game?

bilbobob007
05-02-2008, 09:20 PM
Actually i think the bowling bit is a bit poor. Feels kinda flat. Guess i was expecting a bit more. Having waded thru the hype its certainly a good game. I notice a lot of people dont seem to think much to the walking/running mechanics of the game. I actually really like the way it works.

And as for issues and slow down and crashes. Not had my ps3 crash and it runs very well I think.

For me the game deserves 10 out of 10 for the tv stuff and the radio chatter. Not so much the tunes. Any one else watched much of the tv stuff at all?

And BRYAN man come on what the hell is with that quote?

I'm not too keen on any of them so far.

Darts is far too easy. They should've maybe used a system with a power bar for the throw, having it affect the accuracy, something like that anyway.

It would have been cool if the mini-games supported motion control...

Segitz
05-03-2008, 12:28 AM
Bowling and Darts support Sixaxis!

But other than that... the pool is MORE than easy... the code automatically aims for you, so you only have to dial in the power you hit the balls with (you at least if a ball is lying for a "good" shot).

I am now at ~33%... I dunno how high these percentages go, when "only" doing story stuff (which I did... at least mostly... did some of brucies car export and LJs deliver missions, but other than that, nothing... but I am still only on the second island).

And now for a correction of my previews rating of the game. I said, I'd "only" rate it 9/10, but after playing ~15hrs or so, I'd give the game a 9.5/10. The story is pretty boring, but the missions now get REALLY cool

I LOVED the "rescuing Roman" mission, as well as the bank heist with the McReary brothers...

The duck and cover controls work quite well and make it finally possible, to not die, like in the preview GTA games (which I only played on the PC, because of sucky console controls).

But one question I do have... Who do I have to "f*ck" to get my guns delivered by car?

Well i had my first freezing experience today.

Tried to start the game, and it simply froze on the loading screen. releted the load screen, same result. Deleted all my saves, same result. I had to delete the game data and reinstall it to get the game to load correctly. Hopefully this is something patchable, because its definately not an isolated case.

I still can't even get to the apartment. This game is simply unplayable. How the hell did this make it past even the most basic forms of quality control? Did they even boot the game?

The issue only exists with some of the PS3 launch models. My launch 60 GB is doing just fine.

Anyway, try reinstalling the game, and if that doesn't work, exchange it.

ive got a 40GB system, and its been working fine until today. I really think its the software, not the console, i just hope it can be fixed.
