As someone who doesn't give a shit about GTA, I have to disagree with you here. I think it looks pretty damn good, and comparable to most of its contemporaries. And the fact that it's not a linear game, it's a sandbox game at this level of fidelity, I think that's pretty damn good. I'm confused why you're shitting on it. I mean, I'm not losing my head about -omg it's friggin the best thing I've ever seen, how'd they do it- but I mean, I think it's looking very good. The animation so far hasn't impressed me though, aside from the euporia engine stuff (lol falling down stairs).

Rockstar Games has today confirmed that the version of Grand Theft Auto IV which will go on sale in Australia will not be the same version which gamers in other countries will be unwrapping later in the day.

Speaking to The Age, a representative for Rockstar Games confirmed that a "special verison" of the game was submitted for rating by the Office of Film and Literature Classification, who subsequently awarded an MA 15+ rating. Quite what content will be missing from the game was not disclosed, but earlier this week a BBFC report indicated the game contains intense sexual content.

On spoilers...
* Generally though, it'd be a shame to ruin the surprises for anyone else; GTA IV single player simply has to be played on your lonesome to be fully appreciate it for what it is: a true milestone in videogames. Without giving away any spoilers; lots! I think, overall though, it'll be three overall things that entrance GTA fans like never before. [The city, Niko Bellic, and multiplayer.]

On play time...
* So we got the call from Rockstar to come up on the March 26 and play for three straight days in a row – including a Saturday! We'd usually kick off at 9 or 10ish in the morning, play until 8 or 9 at night, then go eat, then crash before getting up the next morning and do it all over again. Sat in front of a 60" LCD screen in a dark room for nigh on 30 hours – now that's hardcore! Every GTA fan's dream though, huh?

On total game time...
* I finished the story mode in 24 hours, without skipping cut scenes, but I literally blitzed through and hardly took on any side missions. If I was to play it again, I'd say to wrap up the story will take at least 40 hours at a normal pace, plus another – say, 25? – to wrap up the remainder of the missions.

On multiplayer...
* Rather than simply go with the whole Deathmatch and Capture the Flag stuff, they've genuinely taken their time creating some amazing new modes that'll do the business online. Mafiya (a chaotic, mission based affair), Cops 'n' Crooks (one team try to capture the other) and Hangman's Noose (players team up to take an army of AI SWAT troops) were our personal faves...

The best GTA game to date?
* GTA IV. By a country mile. It craps on all the others – even the mighty Vice City – from a height equivalent to the Statue of Happiness. Believe me, GTA IV is even better than the hype suggests! It's certainly tighter, both in terms of the way Liberty city is structured and the way in which the narrative feels more movie-like than before. Otherwise, everything feels as if it's been given the next-gen treatment; in particular the driving and shooting are light years ahead of past GTAs. Overall, it's a stratospheric leap forward, beyond anything I'd imagined.

Nothing but re-affirming us that this game is in fact, GOD!

Rockstar, from strong Q&A tests and from previous GTA gamers way of playing estimate that GTA4 should easily come around 90 hours.

I for one am not going to rush anything.

Even in SA when there wasn't much to do (compared to GTA4), I would usually play 3-4 hours without doing any missions, just cruising around, it was so fun.

I know I'm losing credibility with GTA4 since everything I say now sounds like fanboy banter but do you think I care with only 24 days to go! :D:D:D

All characters have "weights" now, even if one of your foot is on the sidewalk and the other on the road, Niko walks unbalanced kind of, he won't float around.

He basically makes connection with the floor now and changes his stance accordingly.

Grand Theft Auto studio cements ties to Massachusetts-based developer of Bully: Scholarship Edition, Empire Earth II.

Despite a rash of show-stopping crash bugs in the Xbox 360 edition of Bully, Rockstar Games was apparently pleased with the port job performed by Mad Doc Software. The Grand Theft Auto developer today announced that it has acquired the studio and renamed it Rockstar New England. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Before handling the Xbox 360 port of Bully, Mad Doc developed Star Trek: Legacy for the PC and Xbox 360, as well as PC games like the real-time strategy game Empire Earth II, and the Dungeon Siege expansion Legends of Aranna. The studio has also created its own game engine and AI middleware solutions.

Rockstar did not announce what its new branch's first project would be, but Mad Doc founder and Rockstar New England studio head Dr. Ian Lane Davis said in a statement that the team is "eager to bring our expertise to bear in the character-driven, open-world stories that make Rockstar Games titles so uniquely compelling."

Yes.

Few years ago Rockstar said they love the freedom with Take-Two and if Take-Two was ever to be bought, they'll take drastic measures to gain the freedom they have with Take-Two and I guess that measure is, going at it alone.

But if anyone is capable, it's of course Rockstar and with a franchise like GTA, it won't be that difficult.

Or alternatively, they can turn to a company who is known for giving developers a lot of elbow room....Hint hint, Sony. :p

Better Sony pick them up than pretty much any other publisher IMO, they just seem the most suited for the job. EA sucks on several levels, and MS doesn't do very well in its aquisitions, and Ubi Soft or Activision would just be a weird fit.

Might be fanboyish to say it. But all the developers I've ever heard doing praise for a publisher. They've always pointed at Sony. For some reason Sony really resonates well with developer relationships n the like. I wonder what would happen if Sony, for real, steps in to acquire R* North.

Another thing that comes to mind is, that, R* doesn't own the right to GTA but Take2 does. In case of Take2's acquisition. If Sony grabs chief R* employees(Sam/Dan Houser and group) and gives them ample creative opportunity in the shape of a future Getaway or a brand new franchise. My God, that would ROCK!!

I read a german article about the hostile takeover etc...

I am really "scared", that if EA takes over Take2, all their good franchises will die and the assimilation of T2 will fundementally change every game, they had in their pipeline.

They said, since Activision merged with Blizzard, EA needs to grow, to become number one again, and Take2 is the best takeover candidate at the moment. Since T2 now is mostly lead my hedgefonds and whatnot (Strauss Zelnick is NOT the savior, some make him out to be! He *IS* one of "them"), and thus they WANT to sell T2 for the highest price possible. If no other buyer comes in and raises EAs offer, they will sell them to EA, and possibly kill off GTA once and for all.

I doubt, Sony will jump in, at least at the moment. They just bought Evolution Ltd. and Big Big and SCE isn't in the best condition (profit-wise) at the moment, so persuading the shareholders will be a tough task. I'd love to see GTA under the SCE banner, but I doubt, this will happen.

If EA gets dibs on Rockstar, GTA will never be, what I used to be... I really hope, this won't happen!

I don't think Capcom would pick them up though. I don't think R* would feel that appropriate. It doesn't make sense considering Capcom's regular game portfolio.

They say, they got better, but in my opinion, EA still just rehashes their franchises on a yearly basis, and innovation is a foreign word to them... And GTA is more or less *THE* definition of innovative gameplay.

And your second notion... I think, if EA bought T2, most of the staff at R* will leave and form a new studio under the Housers.

I mean, I don't care, if the game is called GTA or STC (Steal this Car)... There's no coherent storyline, so making a new game is done in a "jiffy".

I liked how it was always sharp around the edges, great graphics in that game.

In that comparison the graphics do seem close, but in so many other situations of course GTA IV looks a generation ahead like it is supposed to :)

I can't wait to see the realtime shadows casting over all the buildings... That's one thing I really, really want to see for myself on my screen.

I'm going to thoroughly enjoy all the lighting just from that particular effect so much... just watching a day rise and set over all the New York skycrapers..... yum :D

We've been hearing rumors about this for a couple of weeks now, but it appears that we are one step closer to getting an answer. Based on the evidence so far presented, it looks like Europe will be getting an official Grand Theft Auto 4 + PlayStation 3 Bundle.

Swedish retailer Webhallen unveiled a listing including a little piece of what appears to be official box art, along with details of what the bundle includes which is a 40GB PS3, Sixaxis controller, copy of GTA4. Then NeoGAF user "archnemesis" came through with a large packshot of the same box which all but confirms it's existence. Few years ago Rockstar said they love the freedom with Take-Two and if Take-Two was ever to be bought, they'll take drastic measures to gain the freedom they have with Take-Two and I guess that measure is, going at it alone.

But if anyone is capable, it's of course Rockstar and with a franchise like GTA, it won't be that difficult.

Or alternatively, they can turn to a company who is known for giving developers a lot of elbow room....Hint hint, Sony. :p

The games industry seems to be stronger than ever in the United Kingdom at the moment. Titles like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit are seeing unprecedented demand and are selling out weeks before they hit shelves. The same fate now appears to be affecting Grand Theft Auto IV.

Some of the country's biggest retailers are now reporting that they will not be able to fulfill any more pre-orders of the standard edition of the game until some time after April 29, with others simply refusing to accept any more requests. The country's biggest games retailer, GAME claims that "We cannot guarantee delivery on the day of release for orders placed on or after the 7th of April". The same problem can be found on the websites of other chains which the company owns, Gamestation and Gameplay.

Online-only retailers are also facing shortages. Jersey based Play.com informs customers that "We are currently sold out on this item." for the PS3 standard edition, and Shopto.net ceased accepting orders some time ago. Those who have not placed their order yet may find themselves forced into buying the £69.99 Special Edition.

In Team Deathmatch, you can set up an equally balanced eight-on-eight battle or a lop-sided two on 14 fight. You can pick a custom or quick game, and if you're the party leader, tweaking options alters each game significantly. Women's Wear Daily today revealed that German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has contributed to Grand Theft Auto IV by appearing as a DJ on one of the in-game radio stations and providing a selection of his favorite tunes for the game soundtrack. He's the guy on K109 known simply as "DJ Karl". Rockstar Games also released a new piece of game artwork featuring DJ Karl, whose words on the radio are deemed to be "off-color".

Today's announcement is likely to be one of the first of many forays into the mass media for GTA IV. Expect to see more famous names cropping up as we approach the game's release.

Yeah, that's the confirmed release for Grand Theft Auto IV, but if EA is able to finish up the Take-Two takeover, April 29 could end up being just another day. According to Pachter, EA has "an economic incentive to delay [Grand Theft Auto IV]." That incentive, if you couldn't guess, is to take advantage of the far more lucrative fourth quarter, and Pachter reminds us that Take-Two needs to get this game out because they need the money. EA, on the other hand... They may be willing to tick off a lot of gamers and simply wait until the holidays to rake in as much profit as humanly possible.

Now, this is nothing more than speculation, of course. There's a chance that the EA/Take-Two deal won't even go through, and if it does, there's nothing saying it goes through before GTAIV releases. Furthermore, even though the fourth quarter always yields bigger results, we can't imagine that kind of significant delay when the game is already done. Let's all hope that Pachter's theory falls flat this time around.

I'm thinking Take-Two will hold out until after GTA4 launches and that's the 99&#37; likely scenario but it's good to be prepared.

That Michael Pachter quote is from the GT Bonus Round video... which was filmed over a month ago, when the first EA offer was cast... Since then Take2 declined every offer they made...

This got blown totally out of proportion, as back then, it seemed so, as EA was able to take over Take2 before GTA4 hits... This won't happen now, as it is only 19 days to the release (which is... GREAT :D).

My guess is, when Phil said "We have GTA4 related talks with Rockstar", they were probably planning this bundle and planning it so the bundle is exclusive to Sony.

Since it's stupid of Microsoft to not make a bundle (especially after paying $50mil for DLC), that can be the only reason.

It's very tough to get an official bundle like this.
You either have to be a 1st party title or have very strong relations with the company that sells the console.

This bundle speaks high volumes about the good relationship Rockstar and Sony have.

Retail confirms PlayStation 3 GTA IV bundle

UK retailer Shopto has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that a PlayStation bundle with Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV is due for release in Europe on April 29.

The retailer said that there was some confusion as to who would be distributing the product in the UK – Gem, which has the exclusive distribution contract with publisher Take-Two, or Centresoft, the company that handles distribution for Sony.

"We know for a fact it is coming out in Europe and we are expecting an announcement in the UK any time," confirmed Igor Cipolletta, COO of Shopto.com.

"We are not sure if Gem or Centresoft are distributing it yet, that seems to be the hold up," he added.

I wonder why Sony was unable to secure a GTA IV bundle offering in North America.

I'm thinking it may have costed too much on Sony's side. Maybe R* or Sony don't have as many distributing options in North America or something.

Or there might've been other agreements that prevented something like a NA GTA IV bundle from happening.

Not that this isn't amazing news itself, but it would've been truly spectacular if Sony and R* collaborated for a GTA IV bundle in both regions.

well it's likely that America will see better GTA sales for the 360 than in any other territory, so it's better to reduce the cost by releasing the bundle in a territory they are focusing on, Europe.

I preordered a while ago, but transferred the money towards a ds3. I'm proud to say the DS3 rocks. Vibrate really feels different and is worlds better than DS2. I tried afterburning and firing the gattling gun in warhawk at the same time. Incredible.

It's my birthday in 2 weeks. So I'll put money back on to GTA4 and a box of EOJ set2 booster packs.

To my knowledge the versions should be identical but I _do_ hate it when they only preview the Xbox version in every media.

Rockstar Screws Microsoft on GTA IV

We published an article a few weeks back called Microsoft in GTA IV Panic in which we detailed how the industry giant was stressing about the number of PS3 consoles the release of GTA IV would ship over Xbox 360s. We argued that this was evident in the way Microsoft had gone about marketing the Xbox 360 version of the game. We also pointed out how Sony had, it appeared, done very little in response (you’ll have to read it for the full explanation).

Now we know why.

As you have no doubt read, it has come to light that a new version of the PS3 will be made available in time for the launch of GTA IV. It is the 40GB model of the console, but it comes bundled with GTA IV. This is a big, big deal. Especially as the package doesn’t cost any more money than the unbundled version of the console.

The deal is only officially announced for a UK release, but we’ve been given the tip-off that Australia will receive the deal too… in fact we’ve heard unconfirmed reports that some retailers are already promoting it. And if it is making it all the way to little ‘ol Oz, then it should hit every other major territory as well.

This is a massive blow for Microsoft, who has already lowered the Xbox 360’s price point in Europe, and paid US$50 million for downloadable content in an attempt to lure the 12 million-odd PS2 owning GTA fans away from the Sony brand. Given the money and marketing that Microsoft has thrown at Rockstar, the console manufacturer may have expected to get some support back from the developer. On the contrary, Rockstar has, deliberately or not, undermined Microsoft’s chances of not only shipping a bucket-load of consoles, but potentially from coming out on top of the console wars.

Make no mistake; this play by Sony is the most explosive strike yet in the ongoing war between the two console makers.

We’ll probably never know whether Sony paid megabucks for this deal or not, but the facts are on the table. Sony’s most affordable version of the PS3 will come bundled with GTA IV. Currently, in Australia, that model retails for $699 (and has room to move should Sony feel the need).

By comparison, local retailer Harvey Norman is promoting an Xbox 360 Elite with GTA IV for $698 (it RRPs for $729 without the game). It’s the same price, but of course the Xbox 360 is minus Blu-ray, built-in wireless and, yes we have to say it, reliability. This is the only bundled deal we have found for the Xbox 360 thus far.

If those missing features don’t bother you, you can always look at the other Xbox 360 SKUs that don’t come bundled with GTA IV. You can buy the arcade console for $399, and the game at $119, to be playing the game for $520. You will not be able to play online, however, and will be limited to 256MBs worth of saves and patches - unless you want to spend more on a hard-drive.

And what of the standard premium pack? Well it is $579 which, if you buy GTA IV at $119, comes to the same value as the elite deal at Harvey Norman. Which makes the premium console frickin’ worthless.

So for the informed consumer, this deal makes it something of a no-brainer. The best value for money deal in order to play GTA IV is Sony’s 40GB bundle. And no, we haven’t forgotten which console has the best game’s library, DLC and online, but as we argued here, this won’t mean a lot to a casual consumer who just wants to play GTA IV.

Make sure you check out our GTA IV Multiplayer Hands-on. It will leave you very excited, and offers some support to why the Xbox 360 version of the game will probably be superior, even if in terms of pure console sales, it is looking like the PS3 might romp home.

i've noticed that the new PSN has streamed movie clips and game clips so that means we can free up more space on out HDDs. it's the small things that make the difference. 3mb is nothing

They said it has very little use but the places that it is used can be fun but they said they are not forcing 6axis motion, they said you can complete the whole game without using it.

They have the same philosophy towards it as Konami.
