Wait wait wait.... It's actually shirt 'wrinkles?' Like.. it's actually wrinkling??? I want to see a gameplay video focused on this so I can be sure!
If so though, I will... be playing next gen... when I have this game...
Stop arguing with MILR people, MILR you are part of it too, you have to stop as well, everyone doing the arguing is ruining the thread. Just stop, you said what you had to say but you don't have to fight to get it out, all you do is press the god damn post button, stop feeling threatened and don't respond to something you don't have to and shouldn't to.
If you really want to say what you want, just say it and be done with it, don't argue about it for countless posts after, ok?
And MILR, don't think you're the good guy here, because you're not. You're being as stubborn as anyone else and you need to stop too.
Stop arguing. Enough already.
I want to talk about god damn shirt wrinkles now ok?

I wonder if the hair in this game is actually individual strands or not.

I mentioned the painted look a long time ago. I will continue to "harp" on it all I want.
Whining masteratt can stand but stubborn attitude is a big no-no.
You belong in the ignore list, friend.
Wait wait wait.... It's actually shirt 'wrinkles?' Like.. it's actually wrinkling??? I want to see a gameplay video focused on this so I can be sure!
just watch any video.
It's clear when he is rolling.
Watch REALLY closely......
WARNING: You might start to feel pathetic for trying to catch something like that lol

One more thing that struck me visually was how awesome the jungle looks. It looks exactly the way they realized in the concept trailer of 2006. Highly stylized green! Infact, the concept trailer was a great mix of stylized painted look and polygons. Bravo to Naughty Dog for bringing the stylized painted vision all together. I hope they keep repeating this again n again n again n again n again ........... :roll eyes:

haha, I'm surprised you didn't notice? Check gamersydes video for plenty of wrinkle action ;)

Everyone, IGNORE ME! IF you don't like me please ignore me RIGHT NOW! Don't wait! Do you think I really care? DO IT!
Are you chicken! Start an ignore fest! DO IT NOW!
By the way, the jungle does look great. I was in the jungle several years ago on a mission trip and the jungle does look like in this game.

Holy ***t, t3h shirt wrinkling!!! I'm feeling the pathetic and awesome, all combined into one! XD
P.S. I think I used to say this a long time ago, but I still think I like the red sleeved shirt better for some reason lol :P
But holy ***t wrinkles!!! I want that shirt now, that shirt is the best. Dirty Uncharted shirt = t3h awesomeness.
Edit - I wish we had cleared shots at the ocean water, it looks really nice in the Full Level Gameplay video thing but the resolution is too low to really get the look of it I think.
Edit 2 - I think I'm actually getting to used to the non-red sleeved shirt.. it's growing on me! :O

LOL @ wanting the shirt.
But dude, hell no, that red shirt wasn't cool. I dig Nathan more as a lead character with a simple white than red. Maybe that red will be a hidden costume or something who knows lol but white is better to highlight the wrinkles and dirt from the level. Red made him skinny looking :P
curryking1
10-02-2007, 01:23 AM
I know! If they have hidden costumes, they should have different shirts and pants, and a police costume! How funny would that be? :D
I didn't think he looked that skinny before tho lol, I think he looks the same, but this shirt definitely gives the more gruff appearance. I think it fits the overall art better too now. I think the red shirt fit more in the concept trailer, everything was a lot cleaner in the conceptual stuff, everything now is very sharp and rugged and defined. The 'rolled up' sleeves on the new shirt are pretty slick touches too.

No, actually I disagree somewhat. He sure is buff in the real game than the concept trailer. I think one of the bottom row of pics in the lengthy comparison pic from last page shows exactly what I mean.(edit: here the comp. pic)
http://xs220.xs.to/xs220/07402/nathan.jpg
Hmm, I think the concept trailer wasn't clean. Rather cartoonish, maybe. The real game now has added a lot of flesh, err for lack of a better word, to the cartoonish stylized concept of 2006. I cant put my finger on it but you already agree that the game looks better than the concept in so many ways. I think your 'rugged' description fits the bill perfectly.
Rolled sleeves? I didn't notice. *Leaves to watch video*.
Maaaaayen, the things you find after careful inspection. wow. I feel like gaming has gone back to the olden days when it was so much fun to discover lil things all over. It means, ND is doing something very very right!

:P VG-A
Q & A from DarkG, a Naughty Dog spanish designer in a forum. Sorry, text in spanish.
______________________
Tambien puedes pelear cuerpo a cuerpo.
DarkG - La IA me encanta.
DarkG - tienes razon HunterZero.
Y no me va a sorprender nada!
Jejeje, juegazo.
LOL, give me a few minutes to extract some highlights! I'll edit this post.
- They're still optimizing the frame rate, will end up running at constant 30 fps. Sometimes it goes up to 45 fps with all effects on, but they aim at constant 30 fps as already mentioned.
- All textures have been drawn, there are no scanned textures. That's why it looks somewhat cartoony.
- Jetski level has 6 million polygons + water reflection + refraction + bump mapping + jitter + shadows + a good number of characters + physics + AI + volumetric explosions + etc :-p
- It should take 12 hours to complete.
- The AI will learn your behavior and react accordingly. Experienced gamers will have a hard time. They're proud of the AI.
- There are no scripted events when you fight with the AI. You'll never see the same situation twice (to some extent, of course).
- No auto-aim.
- The effects still aren't final. They'll improve close to the very end of the project for optimization's sake.
- There's a lot of stuff we haven't seen yet. It's like a movie where a lot of things happen, and it will have lots of varied action: shooting, fighting, platforming, puzzles, enigmas, races, treasure hunting ("you'll be finding things"), etc.
- Real time HDR lighting: if there's a sunset, everything on screen will have a reddish tone. Everything will be real time.
- 720p allows better geometry. We might not see anything better than Uncharted geometry-wise at 1080p.
- PS3 devkits let them know all the game stats when they're developing it (duh): GPU load, texture memory, level memory, shadow memory, buffers, how is streaming affected, frame rate, etc.
- "I love the AI. The fact that it learns from the player's actions and that it adjusts the difficulty itself is awesomenage. We haven't even exploited half of what the Cell can do. Besides the CPU power, we've got the GPUs (sic) inside the PS3, where you can send some tasks to spare Cell from "digesting" them, so that you get more free CPU time. PS3 still has a lot of untapped power.
- They didn't have the time to include a co-op mode and getting the game finished in November. Tons of ideas left out of it, might make it to Uncharted 2. (This is usual in game development)
- Nathan Drake has 3000 animations.
- Real time cutscenes, no prerendered stuff. It's all real time, in-engine.

That the game is solid 30 fps. fluido a 30 fps en todo el juego :)
I gather also they talk about it lasting 12 hours in normal difficulty. Means I spin it in 20.
Reposting at the turn of the page.

PS3 still has a lot of untapped power."
Sorry it took a bit long, I haven't been here all the time :-p
^ Nice summary VG. :thumbl:

Thank god no autoaim! I hate autoaim.. I always, always play worse with it. It's absolutely terrible in Halo 2, in Halo 3 it's ok, Resistance it's kind of ok, but for all games still I would prefer to never have autoaim, I despise it.

No Autoaim?? I dunno, I like the Autoaim in Warhawk... But since Uncharted is a slower game, I think I can live with it.
12hrs is ok I think. EU import will set me back bout 55€, so the price seems really ok for 12hrs. But I saw reports, where it is "delayed" in Europe until early December, which pretty much sucks. But, this game is sure to sell some systems, especially when there is a 400€ system on its way (if the rumors hold true).

Ya, I think you're right and I hope so at the same time. Either way though, I expect Uncharted to be by a long shot my favourite PS3 game when it hits, I think it'll manage to show a number of awesome qualities totally untouched by anything else out on anything yet.
It'd be really cool to see some Uncharted bundles, hopefully some nice prices for a bundle like that, like on sale or something, that'd be sweet.

but....but....but the Sony hype.
I tell yah, Sony is really proving a lot of the naysayers wrong one naysayer at a time with the PlayStation 3. But it's like I tried to explain before, you have to give the console time to improve instead of judging it on the spot. It has always been that way with the PlayStation brand. The improvements are slow but surely the longer the console remains on the market. Ultimately speaking in this case, however, I must say with the PS3 those improvements are even greater than what they were before since it's not just visuals we are dealing with this time, but rather, everything -- whether that be online, content, eye-candy, accessories or updates and so forth. It potentially has a lot going for it, but you're not going to see that right away. But, I believe those who've purchased the console(s) before can better relate to this more so than others who had not.

looks like the game just got 1080i support with solid framerate.
In regards to the UK release date, I believe its December 7th. We’re doing simultaneous localization in 13 languages (most, if not all, of which will be in the US version) and should be released in all territories within 3 weeks of each other.
As for multiplayer, we opted to stick to making the most compelling single player game possible this time. But there is a lot of game there and some pretty good replay value with multiple difficulty levels, hidden treasures, medal points, and some really cool unlockables.
Hey guys, I appreciate all of these comments. And in fact, you have just helped us out immensely. I wasn’t fully aware of how important it was for us to support 1080i. Up until earlier today we were only supporting 720p (and SD of course) but reading through these comments, it was brought to my attention the number of people who had HDTV’s but would not be able to experience Uncharted in high-def. So we immediately went to work and I’m pleased to announce here, for the first time, that we have now implemented 1080 support! Thanks for pointing this out to us, so now even more people will get to enjoy Uncharted the way it was meant to be… in glorious high definition!
It will play in 1080p but it’s software scaled to help out those with 1080i sets, so if you have a 1080p TV you’ll still want to play it in 720p (which it will default to).
And yes, our game runs at 30FPS

It looks like we may have a demo of this title later this month or early November...
Today Sony Computer Entertainment and Naughty Dog launched the official website for Naughty Dog's first next generation game; "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune".
Along with the opening of the official website, the company revealed that the game entered Beta testing on September 16, confirming that it is on track for its North American release this November.
Furthermore Evan Wells, Naughty Dog's co-President, confirmed they would create a demo for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the PlayStation Store. The final date for the demo is yet to be determined, but it will be made available prior to the games release.
Uncharted is scheduled for a November release in Europe, and will be released in North America on November 20.

new videos http://gamevideos.com/video/id/15243 and http://gamevideos.com/video/id/15242, the first one begins outside the custom's house, in the balconies, with a cutscene, staring nathan and elena, and the next is the awesome gameplay video, notice in the end when he is punching the fat guy, the screen shakes, and it makes it look like you are really punching the guy, not like the floating punches that occurred before.... enjoy...
HOLY. SHIT.
There are a whole slew of different types of unlockables that you'll be able to snag, including behind-the-scenes footage, artwork, additional costumes and even other playable characters (though Nathan will still appear in the cutscenes). You'll also be able to unlock different rendering modes, like a black and white mode, a sepia-toned mode, a next-gen filter (with appropriate super bloom and saturated colors) and even a mode that doesn't utilize textures, allowing you to see how the geometry was put together more easily. It's worth noting that any unlockables you earn are shared between all the save games on the system, and that you can carry over Medals that you've earned into a second or third play through in order to help you find all the treasures and unlock everything.

I think I'm avoiding all Uncharted threads from now on everywhere as well as news articles because I've seen too many environments and even cutscene screen captures. I still know pretty much nothing about the storyline although each time I see something new I could take better guesses. What I know is that the jungle environments we've seen until recently are just the tip of the iceberg and that the game will have a lot more to offer.

Man, oh man the new video from gamersyde brought tears to my eyes, Naughty dogs new streaming engine is amazing. Some textures are insanely high detailed, I haven’t seen no low res textures 'pop' into higher detail al of a sudden either yet and unlike gears the level of detail of the textures in the distance is pretty fucking amazing for a console game.

MILR's hope of a "realistic" mode is simply borne out of the fact that he doesn't have it in him to think that a "painted" or "stylized" look could be anything other than flat out NPR (http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/siggraph/EOHpicaEmberBIG.jpg).
A stylized look couldn't possibly mean color filtering towards greater color saturation or boosting contrast, or playing with the palette in order to evoke mood... no, it means the greatest and most unspeakable sin possible by man, god, or devil was committed, and the game was meant to look like TF2 or Wind Waker...

That picture of the girl with the all day lollipop is awesome, so I mean, I'm not even slighted in the least. It's adorable. But I'm not having a temper tantrum, my mood is pretty flatline most of the time, I'm just miffed that even when I am nice, it's like talking to a brick wall, none of it sinks in anyway, so why bother when the result is always nil? In the recent interview a developer said that they have like a million of bugs and the game is set to release next month.

By most you mean, a select handfull like some lackluster sports titles and....ridge..racer? Resistance-720p, Heavenly Sword-720p, Ratchet and Clank-720P, Killzone 720p....uh..what.
Lair is the only one that's 1080p that comes to mind, and while pretty, did make a few visual sacrifices.
Unless you're talking about all those eyeblistering downloadable titles
the problem isn't just time, it's resources. It's just not worth it to sacrifice the level of visual fidelity most designers want to achieve for a resolution so few people have (hey nameless) as of now, and few will notice. I can see it from their perspective as a waste of time, money and man-power.

Hahahah @ cpi, that was good XD
On the 720p/1080p issue... it's all going to be dependent on what the devs are going for. 1080p is perfect for GT5, but it's not for Uncharted or R&C. It's just what they want to do. Maybe in the future of what they want to do will be able to include 1080p, and maybe not, maybe they'll want even more resources in 720p instead of opting for the same in 1080p if that choice happens, who knows??

Oh dear...
Uncharted date, demo chatter (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=84884)
08/10/07 10:53
Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells has said that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will probably be released here in early December, with a demo due out before launch.
Speaking on the comments section of his latest official Sony blog update, Wells wrote: "In regards to the UK release date, I believe its December 7th. We're doing simultaneous localisation in 13 languages...and should be released in all territories within 3 weeks of each other."
In answer to queries about the demo, he said: "Yes, we will be creating a downloadable demo for the PSN. We don't have a final date on when it will be up, but it will be before our release date." By that he presumably means the US release date of 20th November.
Even more heart-lifting was one of Wells' later comments, where he thanked everyone for chipping in to the discussion before explaining that - having read arguments about including 1080i support - the team had gone away and added it on top of the native 720p support. "[I]t was brought to my attention the number of people who had HDTVs but would not be able to experience Uncharted in high-def," he told the audience. "So we immediately went to work and I'm pleased to announce here, for the first time, that we have now implemented 1080 support!" He went on to say that the game runs at 30 frames-per-second.
For more on Uncharted, check out our recent preview/interview (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=83545).

Omg that sounds like Dino Riders! Dinosaurs with rocket launchers ftw!

Hey guys,
So I see a lot of questions about the length of the game. It’s always a tricky question to answer since people’s skill levels vary so much. But I think it’s safe to say that it would be hard to finish it the first time in less than 10 hours. And I think a much more average play time is probably closer to 12. We have 3 selectable difficulty levels from the start of the game (Easy, Normal, and Hard) and one that is unlockable (Crushing!), so you can decide how much of a challenge you want. We’ve also made it possible to change your difficulty setting mid-game, so if you feel you made a mistake a couple of hours in, you can switch without having to start over.
And as for replayablity, we have a bunch of hidden treasure to search for throughout the environments and Medal Points you can earn by showing off your skills as you play the game. These can all be used to unlock some pretty cool secrets (concept art, behind the scenes movies, skins, cheats, etc.)
Hope that answers you questions!

I would like a modified version of that.
In my opinion, it would be cool if he encountered a few large lizards or perhaps a dinosaur living in the jungle. There are legends and sightings (in recent times) of all kinds of creatures lurking in the jungles. From giant snakes, lizards, and even unknown creatures!

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Moves Closer to Gold
+ Posted by Evan Wells // Co-President, Naughty Dog
Hello again! The countdown is on and we are only two weeks away from a Gold Master. We’re down to the point where every minute matters. The QA departments are working around the clock (and around the globe … in Europe and Japan) looking for any last bugs that we need to get cleaned up before we can ship.
Things are hectic around our studio as we’re trying to juggle several tasks at once. Not only are we trying to wrap up production on the game, but we’re also working frantically on helping with the package design and the strategy guide as well. We’ve also scheduled one last impromptu focus test this weekend in our office so that we can check to make sure that any of the last minute tweaks we’ve made to certain aspects of the game haven’t thrown off any of the previous game balance tuning that we’ve done.
Richard Lemarchand was up North in the Bay Area doing a whirlwind media tour on Thursday and Friday of last week. He stopped by the offices of many magazines and websites to show off the latest build of the game and to give some last minute updates before we send off the final disc for review. Be sure to keep an eye out for coverage and gameplay footage online. This preview (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/825/825467p1.html) from IGN is one of the first I’ve spotted.
We’re also preparing to create another trailer to be released in the coming weeks. Taylor Kurosaki, our video editor, is working on selecting the music to use in the next one and planning out the flow and the structure to tease the story just enough without giving too much away.
The final mixes of sound, music and dialog are all being added to our cinematics and it’s really coming together nicely. We’re also getting back all of our localized assets so that we can ship Uncharted simultaneously around the world in 13 languages!
For more information, be sure to visit the official game Web site (http://www.us.playstation.com/Uncharted/).

I’m back!
Let me answer a few of these questions quickly:
RE: Multiplayer – Uncharted does not feature a multiplayer mode. We really wanted to focus the entire teams efforts on creating the most engaging single player experience.
RE: Screensots – Our screenshots are all captured directly from the game. There is post processing and depth of field, but that’s all being calculated real-time, and how it really looks in the game.
RE: Languages – We do have spoken Dutch, but you can set it to spoken English with Dutch subtitles if that’s how you’d prefer to play it. In fact you can pick any combination of spoken language and text that you like.
RE: Demo – Yes we will have a demo before the game hit’s the shelves, but we don’t have an exact date set yet.
RE: International Release Dates – I hope I didn’t put my foot in my mouth too badly. We are gold mastering all the languages at once, but due to the distribution differences between the various territories around the world there may be a few weeks difference between street dates from country to country.
RE: Advertising – We are working closely with our advertising agency working on a wide range of marketing executions. The TV spot is being worked on and coming along nicely. All of this will start hitting soon. We want to wait until closer to release to for the big push. After all, it doesn’t do you much good to see something on TV that you can’t run out and buy!
He seems to share my view on advertising...

It's here that we saw some of the refined animation features in place in the current build. Thanks to the game's blending technology, different animations can be run together to create more lifelike reactions to the goings-on. For instance, if you shoot someone in the hip, he could hold his side while running for cover, or limp away if shot in the leg. The enemies react a little more realistically now as well, taking cover and getting out of fire if you blanket the area with bullets.
http://www.c4dnexus.nl/forums/style_emoticons/default/drool.gif
Getting our hands on the game, we noticed that the camera has come a long way since the first time we played Uncharted and the whole movement and aiming system feels great now. Taking cover and rolling to dodge gunfire also works very smoothly, and Drake overall feels like he has more weight to him than earlier builds that we played. Naughty Dog's experience shows here with how well the controls have been refined and tuned.

Yes, this is absolutely true, only because we haven't seen a next-gen tomb raider.
More info:
Most of our issues with prior builds of an already-promising game seem to have been fixed. We'll still have to see how the final product turns out once it releases in six weeks.
As the PlayStation 3 hits its second holiday season, few titles have gotten as much fanfare as Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The adventure title has been as much of a showcase for the platform as Resistance: Fall of Man was during last year's console launch. Of course, the two titles have their differences across genres, but both are holiday flagship titles from two of SCEA's leading exclusive development houses. While we've tracked the progress of Uncharted for some time, we were presented with not only a few new levels to try out last week, but with a new enhancement to the game experience: a prototype of the Dual Shock 3.
For those of you who (like us) are thinking about importing Dual Shock 3s from Japan, the rumble is a very welcome feature, and unlike many of the existing PS3 titles on the market, Uncharted won't need a patch. Instead, as Line Producer Sam Thompson told us, rumble support will be included on the Blu-ray disc. No need to wait for the US launch next spring to feel the effects of gunshots on the game's hero, Nathan Drake.
For those who haven't heard much about the game, you'll be stepping into the shoes of treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he searches for clues to the lost city of El Dorado, which legendary historical figure (or pirate, if you're not British) Sir Francis Drake was in search of. The journey eventually takes you to a lost Spanish colony somewhere in the Pacific. Both Thompson and Naughty Dog Lead Designer Richard Lemarchand stopped by our offices to show off two new stages, The Customs House and Catacombs, which you'll be able to watch video footage from right here. The Customs House is an abandoned facility from the colonial era, while the Catacombs will take you into subterranean quarters in search of more clues.
The biggest difference we noticed from our last hands-on with the game (we played the same build between Sony's Croatia event last month and Tokyo Game Show) was that we got killed a lot less. While we're fairly adept gamers, we noticed that the enemy AI has been toned down from "11" to tolerably tough. It also appears that just before the game went into beta testing a few weeks ago, the team decided to scrap the dynamic difficulty that it had been plotting out from the beginning. To be honest, after pumping slugs into bullet sponges and taking more damage than them, we weren't sure how it would all come together in the end product. Given the wild imbalances in previous builds we played, we're glad that the team has opted for more traditional difficulty settings, as it wasn't coming together as well as one might have hoped.
Another important and very evident last-minute addition that we noticed was the implementation of destructible cover. According to Lemarchand, it had been on the table, but the team was on the fence in regard to incorporating the mechanic into gameplay. We noticed it during our jaunt in Customs House. We'd mentioned in past coverage that Naughty Dog has done a great deal in the animation department to capture Nathan's emotional state throughout the adventure, especially fear, as he hides behind bullet-chipped walls. Now it looks like said walls also run the risk of dissolving under a hailstorm of ammo, so it'll be up to you to play wisely.
It also appears that the death animations have been toned down. Lemarchand mentioned that there had been some complaints regarding the "excessiveness" of pirate and mercenary deaths, and some found the flopping around to be a bit much. It wasn't a huge complaint of ours; we were more concerned about it taking multiple shots to the head to drop an enemy more than how spastically he died, but we're fine with the changes. Except, Lemarchand said, for the sniper rifle and grenades, the likes of which you can watch in our video clips.
We're also happy to see that there are more animations in place so that you can differentiate wounded enemies from non-wounded ones. It was something that we occasionally noticed during our last demo in the courtyard section, as mercenaries would flank in large numbers, and it was tough to tell who we'd already injured. There has also been some weapons tuning. Look for rifles such as the AK-47 to give you a faster rate of fire, but with less damage, while handguns will give you more stopping power up close, but with much slower reload times.
We also got the skinny on more regarding the game's visuals. It looks like the final product will come in at thirty frames per sec ond, and it runs natively in 720p. However, unlike last year's issues regarding Resistance playback on older HD sets that only rendered 1080i or 480p (thus downscaling that game to 480p), Naughty Dog has ensured that Uncharted will also support 1080i output. It also looks like as of now, the cinematics are mostly done, but haven't been completely finalized. Also, the game is still being bug tested, but we've been told that Naughty Dog's beta process turns around faster than many developers, so the game's likely closer to completion than the build we played last week.
While we've given lots of positive coverage to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, we've also been very quick to point out what issues Naughty Dog needed to address. The team seems to have done a fine job tweaking things to address most of our major gripes. While the game isn't finished and we can't pass judgment until it hits stores, we've seen most of our problems with the game addressed. Getting hands-on with a new build that tweaks the difficulty, balances weapons and allows for us to see where we've wounded enemies has gone a long way in boosting our confidence in the game. We'll see how it all pans out once we've got review code.

I doubt whatever next-gen TR Crystal Dynamics puts out will look or play all that great anyway. I agree with Lali we haven't seen a next gen Tomb Raider, but I also disagree with the part that it's 'only because we haven't seen one it's not better than Uncharted.'
And with that I agree with EvilTaru that to see a next gen Tomb Raider I would wonder if it would be able to surpass Uncharted.

Well, the last Tomb Raider (not the Anniversary thing) was okeyish... Not that bad, but nothing special.
At least, we Europeans get a timely release this time around (not like with Lair and most, if not all PSN releases). 3 weeks is a tolerable wait time.
And, I like it, that you can a) select a diffculty from the get go and b) change it mid game, if it gets too hard. I always loved this in games (Oblivion, NWN et al). I prefer games to be a challenge, but not unfair (some games just get unfair, like MK2 or SF2 (on very hard at least)).
I doubt, a TR game will surpass Uncharted, at least anytime soon. The problem is multiplatforming. Gameplaywise it may (we cannot tell how well Uncharted plays yet so, this is a moot point) do so, but graphically and scalewise, it will surely not rival a first/second party game.

if you set supports 720p and 1080i you would be a fool not to use 1080i as your default. as the frame rate will never reach the 60fps need to take advatage of 720p.

The game is 1280 x 720p native and has an option to output 960 x 1080i that's then upscaled to 1920 x 1080i. 1280 x 720p is the way you want to go if you have the option.

so its not realy a 1080i?... lameWell, it's not natively rendering in 1920 x 1080i if that's what you're asking. They're just adding the ability to output 1920 x 1080i for HD displays that can't accept 1280 x 720p to allow them to play in (upscaled) HD resolutions. Still better then the alternative of playing in 720 x 480p but play in 720p if you can.

All HDReady sets must support 1080i, but does it make sense? I'd say no, and I mean always no.
Interlacing is a bad stepbrother from the past, when analogue tv engineers da the choice to do progressive low res or interlaced mid res tv... Since CRTs deinterlace "physically", it didn't matter much, but nowadays, it pretty much sucks. LCDs and Plasmas always display progressive pictures, no matter the input. So, interlaced material needs to be deinterlaced (it needs to be put back to progressive) beforehand. So, your material always suffer. Only very high end tvs usually do very good deinterlacing, but those sets are very expensive and usually not gamers choice.
Mine does and okeyish job at it. In gaming it is not that bad (GTHD), but just use the internet browser and you see what I mean.
I hope, interlacing dies soon :D It really is something best forgotten.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is one of Sony's biggest guns in the PlayStation 3's holiday arsenal, and also vaunted developer Naughty Dog's first stab at making a game on next-generation hardware. The majority of Uncharted that we've seen so far has been set in the tropical jungle where Drake and friends will battle a team of crack mercenaries on their way to hopefully discovering the lost treasure of El Dorado to become rich beyond their wildest dreams. At least, that's the plan. But what else is in the game? Naughty Dog stopped by our office recently to show off some indoor areas from later in the adventure, which proved to us that Uncharted will be much more than a simple steamy jungle romp.
The game will be split over 20 chapters, and you'll see a chapter title tastefully pop up onscreen every time you begin a new section. This smacked of a good adventure novel to us, and lead designer Richard Lemarchand indeed said it's meant to evoke the classic adventure serials (think Indiana Jones), which inspired Uncharted in the first place. Our demo began at the outset of chapter 11, about halfway through the game, as Drake entered a customs house, an old 16-century Spanish governmental building originally used to coordinate the shipping of goods. The outside required Drake to leap across a few broken walkways and such to reach the interior. But those darn mercs had set up shop in the main, ruined room of the building, which required our hero to run from cover to cover, taking them down carefully and methodically as the tactical combat demands.
We were more impressed by the next section, which was set in an ancient monastery. In terms of design, this dimly candle-lit cathedral was the most starkly different setting we've seen yet in Uncharted and quite dissimilar to the typical jungle environments that make up the early game. We played through an intense firefight in the main room here, ducking or rolling between pews and columns as we fought off a number of mercs up close with shotguns. Toward the back of the church, we used high-powered, laser sight-equipped rifles. After we cleared the room of enemies, we uncovered a minor puzzle via a mysterious diary that required us to ring two bells at the same time (we'll leave the fairly intuitive solution to the player) that led us down into some subterranean catacombs, complete with Lara Croft-style chasm-jumping and ledge-grabbing.
Naughty Dog has been listening closely to player feedback from previous demo showings of the game, especially on certain Internet gaming forums that shall remain nameless. As a result, it has implemented a wide range of tweaks to the combat and navigation that we found improved the overall experience from the previous times we've played the game. Primarily, enemy resistance to damage has been reduced, so you won't unload half a clip of ammo into one guy before he goes down anymore. The targeting has also been tightened and refined; thus, overall, it felt like we were putting forth a much more effective offense than we were able to do in the past. Another nice addition will help you navigate some of the more acrobatic obstacles in the game. Whenever Drake is clinging to a ledge or overhang and you press the stick in the direction you want him to jump, he'll extend his arm toward the next available handhold--if there is one. This will give you a clearer visual cue that it's safe to leap without plunging to your doom.
Uncharted represents a departure from Naughty Dog's traditionally whimsical, cartoon-style roots, but the team's trademark design elements are still evident throughout the game. For one, you'll find a rewards system built into the game that's all but identical to the one seen in the Jak & Daxter series. You start out by earning medals, each of which has a point value attached to it. Some medals will be granted when you simply discover hidden treasure throughout the game. Others come from your actions, similar to Xbox Live achievements; for instance, scoring five headshots in a row might grant a medal. You'll see a little in-game pop-up that shows which medal you've just acquired, along with the number of points it's granted you.
There will be dozens of available rewards, each with a point cost. So as you accumulate points, you'll unlock more and more of the rewards, which will let you modify the game in all sorts of interesting ways. You'll unlock the requisite concept art and making-of videos, of course, but you'll also go on to open up new costumes for Drake and his friends. You'll eventually even be able to play through the game with different characters, such as Elena and Sullivan, on subsequent play-throughs. The rewards get really crazy when you get up to the graphical effects and gameplay tweaks that really change the look and feel of the game. You'll be able to play the game in slow-motion or black and white or sepia-toned for a nostalgic look. Then later, you can crank the light bloom up to searing intensity or remove all the texture maps from the game to make everything look completely featureless. We're not just being polite in saying that Uncharted looks better every time we see it. One of the pleasures of the prerelease previews process is seeing a developer put the final polish and refinement on a game over its last few weeks, which is what Naughty Dog seems to be doing here. Between the thoughtful gameplay tweaks and the smoother frame rate than we've seen previously, Uncharted was playing very well. And we're pleased with the direction this one's going. That said, we'll have to wait until the release date in late November to see how all these elements coalesce into one story-driven experience.
