I'm posting this to settle that old discussion we had a few months ago, arguing whether or not PS3 had an advanced face-detection program in place. Well, here's the answer: It does.

Question: Someone mentioned that to me. Not that they knew that software was running, but they did notice that in one of the full screen viewing modes, it would focus on the faces.

Phil Harrison: And that's a piece of technology that was invented by Sony Research Labs, which we implemented on PS3 in real-time. So that transfer of research into interesting entertainment tool opportunities is already starting. It's already happening. And Howard Stringer keeps banging the table and saying, "Why aren't we doing more of it?" And rightly so. He should be, because the Playstation 3 is actually the best technological outlet for much of this research. Part of the challenge of a research-led company like Sony is inventing stuff that you don't actually have a market for. You have no way of selling it. So what's the point of investing all this money in R&D if you have no way of productizing it? But the Playstation 3 delivers a channel for a lot of these application/service hybrids which will come in the future.

Guys I strongly encourage everyone to read that Four Part review on that page.

It's awesome and it makes you want to hug Phil Harrison and the interviewer.

Both very intelligent people who know what they are talking about

BUT GUYS, 600 DOLLARS!!! COM EON GUYZ!! IT'S TOO MUCH FOR ALL THAT, RAIGHT!?!?

All pure idiocy aside, that's great news. I can see the EyeToy 3 being able to do facial recognition in the future. Is the age of the pure gaming machine truly over?

i think thats only the tip of the ice berg, its more likely to head in this direction:

This technology is called 'Motion Portrait' and developed by Sony-Kihara Research Center that designed Graphics Synthesizer for PS2. It generates realtime (30fps) 3D facial animation from a single 2D picture, and is possible on an ordinary PC (you don't have to have a massive render farm). As you see in the movie, you can add facial animation to anything including pineapples and anime characters. The researcher says in the movie its application to games is interesting, for example animating your face or an anime character face in a game. I think with CELL it's almost inevitable to see it in action in PS3 games.
