Sony have recently been heard waxing lyrical on console lifecycles, and admitted that they believe the PS2 can go on selling until as much as 2010, stating at the GDC that they believe two-thirds of the system's potential sales are yet to come. This projection flies in the face of many analysts thoughts, some stating that the PS2 has reached near-saturation now.
"There are some huge potential gains for us later in the life cycle," commented Andrew House, though Sony are still rumoured to be planning a future-generation PS3 for 2005/6. Sony also reiterated that they're sticking to their own game plan with regard to the next console, irrespective of Nintendo or Microsoft's schedules stating "competitive movement will not be a factor in determining our launch release plans." But of course.

Sony thinks only 1/3rd of all potential PS2 consoles have already been sold and thinks it will sell 3 times what it has now by 2010.
So, they aren't releasing PS3 for quite some time?
They expect a crap load of current PS2s to break...again...and be replaced...again.
Sony has completely lost their collective minds.

This is pretty damn stupid. They say that that Nintendo and Microsoft's launch dates dont matter, but thats B.S. If Nintendo and Microsoft launch, that will catupult them in front of Sony's PS2 with ease, leaving Sony on the backburner for the first time. I dont think Sony is going to allow something like that to happen. If they did, it would be a serious mistake.
I think that whoever launches first, is gonna have more of a headstart on the competition than it might appear. I think its gonna be closer this time around.

Well yeah, that's what happened with PS2. It's a console with dated hardware, but it's way ahead simply because of them launching before everyone else.

Sony is right... PSone is selling after near 10 years and the ps2 will do the same. Yes maybe it will break before that but anyway its good. They can release the PS3 anytime its backward compatible with PS2 and PSone games.

If this happens yay for Nintendo.
But really this is stupid...just like that fake thing about the whole Nintendo not releasing N5 for a while.
well, if you ask me I think a 5 year console life seems a little short.

I fully agree. Buy a 200 dollar gaming machine and games being made for only fiveyears is a bunch of bull shit.

No way in hell. Sony isn't that dumb, unless they expect the PSP to sell hundreds of millions.

Dont eat that like sony would push the release of its PS3 in 2010 they just said that the PS2 will sell until 2010. Like the way PSOne is still selling after all those years.

I can't believe something like this. What are they trying to make Microsoft and Nintendo slow down on the progress on the new console. By then I doubt many people will want to play on something with those crappy graphics. People will have switched companies or start using computers.
This is crazy.

Yeah!! Actually this isn't a bad idea but Sony's PS2 is way more outdated then gamecube or xbox...but maybe not for 10 whole years maybe 8 or something...Then I would probably be able to afford a Nintendo DS when it comes out.

^I'm sure this won't have an affect on the price of the Nintendo DS.

No I meant Nintendo is going to be releasing Nintendo DS and the N5 probably close together and I wouldn't be able to afford both of them...

Launching a console first may give a company a headstart and the leading edge to go over the top, or it could be a Doomsday scenario for the company, remember THE SEGA DREAMCAST. Launching a console at the right time is very tricky.

I think it would be cool it would save me a lot of money and i also thought that 5 years for a console was really short so i think it sounds good.

If Sony really tries to do this, they are making a HUGE mistake, obviously.
