yes and no according to Matt Cassamassina
"Once upon a time, a very smart publisher came up with a brilliant idea. It contacted Microsoft and got the ball rolling on a very unlikely project: Halo for Nintendo DS. Needless to say, there were many egos involved and unfortunately because of some issues that I won't detail, the project was eventually cancelled. But not before it was completely up and running and fully playable. I know all his because I recently learned of the back-story and got a chance to play a leaked build of Halo on DS for myself.
Amazingly, the ill-fated DS version of the title plays remarkably well. Think Metroid Prime Hunters but with a Halo facelift. I had the opportunity to run through the beginning beach area and noted while playing that it looked like Xbox Halo except on DS, it was running fast, and the control was responsive. The trademark Halo music even played out of the tiny speakers of Nintendo's handheld. It is really, truly a damned shame that certain publishers couldn't make this happen because it would have undoubtedly been a huge hit and would have only furthered the popularity of DS and the Halo franchise.
Now that DS is enjoying a clear lead over PSP and the Halo franchise is bigger than ever, I'd like to see this game-that-could-have-been actually come to exist on the retail market. It's too good of an idea and the execution is too impressive to let it collect dust in the forgotten cabinet of a publisher's vaporware library.
Would you buy Halo on DS? "

That would have been very good news for the DS if it had happened.
I don't like Halo so I wouldn't have bought it.

I like Halo Games, so I would have played it. DS is the #1 system in the world, so what do they have to lose?

Why would they cancel it if it was so close to completion? Thats so lame :(

We were talking about this years ago.
I still have a box art design I made after hearing about it.
PS. Someone else find a copy and I'll give them a cookie.

I can think of two reasons why this was cancelled.
1. Microsoft didn't want to go too deep with Nintendo.
2. The DS crushed the PSP.

Matt also said that there would be a portable Gamecube too, and that proved to be a rumor. Matt also said that Bungie approached Nintendo to put Halo on their console; that too proved to be without foundation.(It was originally made for the Macintosh). Trust me, this is nothing more than Matt's pathetic attempt to rouse up discontent among gamers and garner hits for his site. I don't know why anyone takes him seriously anymore.
ADD- Besides, there are two problems with his statement a) it would never happen- Bungie is Microsoft second party, and i doubt they would allow a "second" party develop for a handheld. (Remember, Rare doesn't even make DS games, so why should Microsoft let them)? and b)if such an opportunity came up, do you think Nintendo would let it go?

Ah ha Zeep, you have fallen into my trap! (muhahaha!) That was an X-Box game but it was not second party. Take a look:
"With just three days until the show starts, keep an eye on GameSpot for more on these new Majesco games shortly".
http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchnews.asp?newsid=15170
Majesco is a third party developer, not second party. Makes a bit of a difference, no?
True, but doesn't the franchise belong to a Microsoft second-party? The Mech Warrior games have always come out for PC and Xbox, and I believe were made by a second party.
instead of Halo DS it shouls be called Halods.

You got me there. I wouldn't know anything about that, but perhaps Majesco has an arrangement with Microsoft, similar to the one Nintendo had with Camelot? Except it would be on a game to game basis, whereas Nintendo and Camelot's was an exclusive partnership. I don't know, that would be worth looking into.

Koten, I just checked wikipedia, and it seems that Microsoft has indeed published and created the X-Box Mech Assault games. While there are other versions on other consoles, the X-Box versions were made in house.
BTW- Thanks for the info.

BTW- Thanks for the info. That proves that Microsoft doesn't own the license. They can only make games based on it.

First: Rare does indeed make handheld games for Nintendo still, it's called "Common Interest". Even though Microsoft owns Rare, Rare is still given the green light from MS to develop said games, because it makes them money in the long run, and also bolsters the sales and reputation of one of their developers, which will in turn make the games released on their in-house platform look more appealing.
Two: Halo DS is more of a possibility now-a-days than it was 10 years ago to see a Sonic game on a Nintendo system. Look what happened there.
Microsoft and Nintendo have a common enemy in today's market: SONY. Anything and everything they can do to decrease Sony's sales and reputation, they'll go lengths to achieve; even if that means pumping out a Halo game for the Nintendo DS. Besides, Microsoft's veritable "mascot" could then reach Nintendo loyalists, which in turn think:
Nintendo Gamer: "Dude, this game is sweet as hell!"
Microsoft Gamer: "Hell yeah it is! Didn't you know it's coming out for 360?"
Nintendo Gamer: "WTF REELY?! OMG HAX NEED XBOX 360!!"
'nuff said.
EDIT: So it's a large possibility, especially in the eyes of an analyst.

Good points Hero. I would also add that as a Franchise, in both the XBox, PC, and upcoming movie incarnations, it would serve Microsoft well to broaden the player base to DS owners that do not have access to the PC or XBox versions. A quality DS game = more hype in a different community of gamers for the forthcoming movie.

I'd probably get it. I always have fun playing Halo at my mate's place on his Xbox, so the multiplayer alone would probably be worth it.

Hang on a sec. No one is discounting the possibility that there could, one day be a Halo DS. But a lot of things could happen. The sky could fall. The Mariners could win the world series. It could snow in Singapore. Sony could go out of business. Any of these things could happen, but they are not likely to.
I'll just recap what I said briefly, just for the record: a)Rare does not make handheld games for the DS-yet. (Although you are right about GBA games). b)that Nintendo would certainly jump at the possibility if there was a chance. On that last point, I think we can both agree.
As for common interest, I'm not quite convinced. Microsoft and Nintendo are far too different in their respective corporate philosophies. While such an alliance would be fruitful, it would be detrimental to Nintendo in the long run. Why? Well, simply because it would raise public awareness for Microsoft series. But when a new console version is released, which console do you think gamers will flock to? Microsoft's, that's who.
That's basically all I'm trying to say. While the possibility of a handheld Halo is intriguing, it would not serve Nintendo well. Microsoft would be at an advantage, while Nintendo's image would suffer. Besides, Nintendo seems more interested in growing it's own marketshare, than someone else's. Moral of the story: take any rumors with a grain of salt-especially this one.

MS has stayed out of the handheld market and that means untaped income for them. That alone means they are thinking about, MS didnt get this huge by not seeing money where it could be made. But the game would have to be great in order to do them any good.

The touchscreen has better control than the x360, but the shell hurts my hands so no I won't buy it. Well MPH wasn't all that great so that contributed to my experience.

The final question prevented this thread from having everybody sound dumb by saying "FAKE!" for like almost 90 percent of the posts. It made this thread better by having something people can contribute to.

Well my understanding with mechassualt is, MS owns Fasa Interactive which has rights to all mechwarrior universe based games. When Orginal Fasa collasped, wizkids bought the rights to the universe and sold rights to MS for the old FASA virtual properties (Battletech(akaMechwarrior, aka Mechassualt did not exist at the time), shadowrun, and I believe Crimison Skys).
I'm a mechwarrior fan who got into the game right after microsoft aquired rights. Mechwarrior fans have lamented plenty over MS getting the rights and killing the game. But that would be a diffrent post ;)
