Had to let everybody peep this!
"P L A Y S T A T I O N 3
- Ken Kutaragi announced that the 20GB version of PlayStation 3 will come with one HDMI port, and the 60GB version will have two HDMI ports for super letterbox display on side-by-side HDTVs. The 20GB version will be sold for 49980 yen in Japan on November 11, 2006."

But apparently I'm too much of a newb to hotlink, so its copy and past time kids!!
I posted this before but there's no visual proof just yet. Maybe Viano took a picture of a 60 GB PS3 to prove this.

I still dont see any updates on the official japanese playstation website. When the 20gb unit was said to have a HDMI port, the website did the update almost immediately. I dont know, we shall see.

Yeah, I'm not going with this Magic-Box story yet. We need to hear it from at least oen or two other places before we take it as 'real.'

Stereoscopic goggles don't require 2 HDMI ports. It could easily be done with one, since a tiny set of screens on your face would definitley not hit the full 1080p resolution one HDMI port is capable of.

Well if true this is good news.
Although the best announcement by far this show has been about the regular model price dropping and addition of HDMI for the Japanese version. I sincerely hope this makes it to the states as well (it would be a very aggressive move by Sony to battle the 360 at a much closer price point).
hmmm....they really dont need the 2 ports...just lower the price!

one is more then enough, 2 is so meaningless

I agree and find it hard to believe Sony is going to re-incorporate it, although when it comes to hardware a "gamer" or "consumer" wants all the support possiblities they can muster.

All the other sites quoting the price drop, the genesis download games etc - none of them quotes dual hdmi.
I think someone just made that up and mixed it with valid information.

ill be very suprised if they do bring out dual HDMI ports

It'd be better if they dropped the price instead of putting the 2nd one back in. I have to really think about even getting on hd tv let alone 2.

@ LaLu: lol its not for people with two HD-TVs to use (although some will)
It's for LAN parties.
One situation having two HDMI ports will avoid is "OMFG WELL I CANT SEE BECAUSE I AM NOT ON HI-DEF! YOU HAVE AN ADVANTAGE!"

If Sony do this.....2 HDMI thing.......then they're probably just thinking about the long run.......maybe 5-7 years down the line where HDTV's will be really cheap.

Yes it is for dual screen output. Didn't you watch the E3 05' conference? And HDMI can be adapted to DVI, so you can display it on any DVI computer monitor as a secondary display for game info, video chat, or web browsing while in game. You could look up cheats for the game you are playing without ever leaving the game.

HDMI can be converted to DVI-D (digital) but not the PC standard DVI-I (analog)
there are two differant DVIs and they are not compatable in the least...

whats your vid card?
im willing to bet its DVI-I
I thought the other HDMI port could be used for HDMI audio to dedicated recievers.
that said, it is surprising that they are adding an HDMI port to the 20G model, but I don't think they will go as far as adding yet another one to the 60G model.

Actually, now that I check, it is DVI-I. that's really tricky the way they do that. They were just advertising it as pure digital DVI, so I assumed it was -D.
Although when I looked up the difference, DVI-I is both analog and digital. Mine is running in digital mode, so I think it's the same spec as DVI-D. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know a whole lot about it.

nevermind my last post. I keep forgetting that TVs will have two HDMI ports. so when you hook up your PS3, you can output an HDMI audio signal from your TV to your audio reciever.

I don't follow you, my Sony TV only has one HDMI-port.
But, if you have a receiver that has an hdmi-connector as input it most certainly has an hdmi-connector as output and that solves your dilema.
However, there are so far quite few and expensive receivers that use the sound channel carried by the hdmi-connector, and I am not sure if there are anyone at all yet that supports hdmi 1.3.

My HDTV allows me to output digital sound through an optical port. The source can be HDMI input, component input, digital TV tuner, etc.

As for on topic, I've always seen it as PS3>Audio Amp>TV for the HDMI setup.

I think instead the expensive PS3 could have given the less expensive PS3 his extra hdmi-port so they could be friends.

Do you really think even ONE % of all ps3 owners in future would have 2 HDTV side by side in their living room or bed room????
useless feature like this only make the ps3 dam expensive.

1st of all you can buy the $500 model if youfind this option to be the reason the $600 model costs to much.
There are HD compatiable monitors that are easily moved from room to room. there are smaller Plasma or LCD HDTV's that a buddy could easily bring over for a gaming session.
In 3-5 years HDTV's will become much cheaper and homes will have multiple HDTV's.
Not saying everyone will have the need, but it's nice to have the option to try it out IMO.

Crumcon just has some sand in his panties. He'll get over it. Let's not all forget about the sub $500 computer monitors that accept DVI (which HDMI can adapt to) such as the one I am looking at right now that can hit near 1080p resolutions and are small enough to not hog up the entire living room. Lets also not forget about this possibility. Modern computer monitors have dual link DVI to hit resolutions higher than 1080p. There is much speculation about newer Blu-Ray discs that claim to stay within the BD movie playback spec that hold up to 100 GB. If Sony can integrate the ability to read these discs into the PS3, then dual HDMI could be used to play back higher than 1080p resolutions for movies. 2k x 4k anyone? Anyway, even if the BD drive can't read the discs, 10 years from now internet bandwidth may be at the level that will allow you to stream a 2k x 4k movie over the gigabit ethernet connection. So, the possibilities are very interesting.

My monitor hits the exact same res. If it only were true 16:9 :( 16:10 is annoying because it still letterboxes widescreen video slightly.

It might be worth mentioning that one of the differences between the G70 and the G71 is the build-in capability of dual screen output. I dare not speculate about what it may imply for the RSX. ;)
Versus G70, the functional changes are subtle. Better FP16 blending performance, double colour rate, SLI AA resolve via the inter-GPU link, two dual-link TMDS transmitters and the move to 90nm are the main differences.

um, 16:10 is the same width as 16:9, just taller. It's 16 parts wide per 10 parts high.

I like it. It actually fits perfectly in my computer desk, there's just enough room on the sides for me to plug in my PS2 clone usb controller, and that' it.
I don't find it wide enough, actually. the reason for that is because I don't want to see 'any' black bars on the top of movies. I don't know, but some movie footage seems even wider.
frosty
09-23-2006, 10:47 AM
16:9 nails most movies full screen, but yes there are cases where movies are encoded in a "wider" screen format than 16:9
