Well yeah , the pics are from the new version of the trailer from gamtrailers, so it has a bad resolution. and the other pics are from the HD from IGN from last year trailer.

I'm pretty sure the darker and higher contrasted one is the newer version. In motion the spark effects are looking much finer that the older ones in motion.
It's looking a bit bright though. TEEDA did you make those? They look too dark compared to the video I'm watching. I wonder if maybe the playback settings are making it look so highly contrasted?
Maybe it's just me being confused though lol.
Edit - Yes, wait, it is me just being confused, those lighter pictures are the new trailer lol.
Thanks man :)

Ya, I hope the lighting is exclusive to the Middle Eastern setting. It seems more appropriate for a place like that (except the sky seems a bit too yellow, I personally don't like the look of the sky if that's the art style they are going for with the yellow sky in that setting), but for other settings I hope the colours a different. I think a lighter tinge of yellow would be better, but that's just me lol.
In the trailer, when Otacon is crying a bit, we get to see the vintage blue tinge of MGS lol. I bet in the jungle areas we'll see a lot more variation and the full range of colours.

I dont think much of the colors were changed...
I rather think, it is because of the codec/encoding/decoding differences.
Because, as we know, MGS has a very disctinct choice of light and post processing. This would also mean, that they changed lighting (or rather post processing) in every single scene with the same degree. Everything is "only" lighter and with less color.
Using poor codecs also can contribute to this effect. As flash is being used on the koji pro site, I can definately say, the codec sucks.

What boggles my mind is that Konami took the time to re-release the trailer in the first place with E3 so damn close.
I also feel the same confusion as you do Diresu with Konami denying that the trailer was remastered.
I guess they are really anxious to let people know that MGS4 hasn't become inferior since its original envisioning in the TGS2005 trailer.

I pretty much agree.
By the way, the whole PS3 logo issue seems to be intentional. I don't see why there would be a reason for them to forget it since all they had to do was copy those frames into the remastered trailer.
Kojima does have a sense of humor though so I don't know what logic this trailer and all the issues around it hold in his mind.

Well I think if there was to be a 360 version (which lack of logo seems to indicate to some people) it would be known by now because it would have had to be in development for a long while now. This is contrary to Kojimas interview few months ago when he flat out denied it. I would not be surprised in the least if this is Kojima branded humor just because of the fact that the rumor won't die.

I just want to see an offical direct HD feed of MGS4.
It's more than obvious why the whole internet is talking about it man, the improvements are totally noticeable and it's not like the trailer wasn't excellent before. Just because it's not HD it doesn't mean it can't be interesting, and it shows.

Let's just stop the chatter about the logos. It doesn't mean shit and nobody should make it out to mean shit. How the fuck does the exclusion of the PS3 logo mean it's coming out on 360!? By that logic, it isn't coming out on any platforms because there aren't any platform logos. End of story, it's not worth talking about. Let's not talk about the IGN boards either. Go somewhere else if you want to perpetuate rumors or beat dead horses, please. :-/
As for the color scheme & stuff, I wonder if they'll change it -- as always there's tons we don't know about the game (and won't know until it comes out and we actually play it), and we may get more at E3, but it may be as late as August or Sept. (Either Leipzig or TGS) before we see any new areas or hear American voices & what-not. We'll see...
here's a thought; what if instead of them re-working a year old trailer, they actually let it run again in-engine. the difference will be the trailer will 'automatically' use the improved engine and resources to output the same video in a better way.
or doesn't it not work that way?
PS. I have my full attention devoted to the smackdown that is MGS4 at E3. I'll bet my good eye that it will be playable- privately or publicly!

Yes, even the TGS didnt have a PS3 logo...
And to the color scheme. I think, as I said in my prev. post, comes from differences in the codecs and such.
mar my words; seven years from now, there will still be 'rumors' of MGS4 coming to X2 (or by that time, they'll call it an 'up-scaled X3 port!)...

I just replayed MGS1, but the GC version. Raven actually says "My spirit and my flesh will become one with the ravens" when he's about to die, so I guess that explains the scene in the MGS4 trailer.
Oh, and he also says: "Snake! I will be watching you, understand?", which again has something to do with the trailer.

It's kind of interesting to bring that up though.
I know for a fact FF X was all like 'Yo check out my polygons dude! So many polygons in my face and my nose!'
But then FF XII comes later and once again they find out less polygons is actually quite a bit more reasonable to make better looking graphics.
Now, this isn't to say I want the super moustache to take leave.
What I'm saying kind of is, it seems that early on, a lot of devs, even the best ones, kind of like overshoot the amount of polygons they need. But I guess this has to do with learning the architecture, but I kind of find it odd how apparent and uniform that trend was with the PS2 going from early gen to the latter part of the generation. Or at least how uniform it was for games I am thinking of right now.
So that's also to say, maybe right now, the way they know how to get the most detail out of the PS3 is the way they are doing it right now, and I guess they will learn a better way later, who knows.
Would this be an appropriate time to post the image of a train wreck?

it isn't about over shooting themselves. it is as simple as them getting more efficient and resourceful at getting better results. one would expect a raw-strength approach initially until skill is required ans shown later on. many titles follow that procedure. Halo 1 had more polys per character than Halo 2 yet the latter looks better. GTA3 and SC2 take more disk space than their sequels- even though the sequels have more content.
curryking1
06-12-2007, 04:42 PM
^That's what I said after... lol. It should have to do with them getting to know the architecture over time also, so they figure out a different way to get better results. At this time, they don't know the better way so they choose the best they have now.

and snake hair=60k vertices....
MGS4 Released date from a Hollywood Video computer captured. (http://www.rumorreporter.com/?p=263)

This is just a rumor and most likely just a temporary holding place date. rumorreporter.com has been buzy today.

A soldier in MGS3 couldn't have been any more than 3000 polygons, and that's pushing it. They're not that detailed, they just have really good texturing. A vertex and a polygon aren't the same thing, a vertex is basically a dot. A polygon is a triangle (for example). So 6000 vertices is 6000 points, which are used to create lines, or shapes.
And yeah, the release date is probably just placeholder, because all we know is 'november' as the tentative release date.
I am told not to believe release dates that are listed for the first day in a month. I don't know how that doesn't happen, but what the heck.

If I remember the old quote, they were talking about pure polygons. in which case, 3K wouldn't be anything compared to how many they can push with PS3. look at how many poly's Lair users, or GT5, or the others.
Segitz
06-12-2007, 06:51 PM
One polygon in a game usually is a triangle and a triangle has 1 face, 3 edges and 3 vertices (basic 3d stuff).
If the mustache alone has as many faces as a basic MGS3 solider, it is imho a bit too much (if ingame model, not cutscene) as those ressources can be put into stuff, better suited for it. But as todays games like HS have ~3mil polys in given scenes (B3D forum, NAo said so iirc), having that many polys on the beard alone is ok :D
I am soooo psyched for this game, I just cant stand it, yet I have to wait looooong before I finally get my hands on it. It would be nice, to have the real release date already (even if it would get pushed back (max a month!))
yoshaw
06-12-2007, 07:17 PM
Do you guys know who subbed/encoded that leaked mgs4 video? (points @ mustache soldier reference vid)
Ok, I'll give a hint.
One was from B3D and the other....
:smoke:
Where do you live Yoshaw? Dubai?
Snake in MGS3 was comprised of 1900 polygons approximately, after undergoing a polygon reduction from about 3900 (the character model looked the same and the hardware would perform better). I saw this in a pic of the programs they used to make the models. It's probably posted somewhere in the previous MGS4 thread.
I'd say that a MGS3 soldier has about 1000 and 1500 polygons, given that their faces aren't as detailed as the main character models and so.
If the mustache alone has as many faces as a basic MGS3 solider, it is imho a bit too much
it is too much, but that doesn't mean the final game will actually have all that. these are early result numbers that often change as the project gets finalized for release.
PS. remember the comments Kojima said about the hair? he said he MAY make some kind of interactivity possible with it like beard growing as you play, head hair getting wet when rain falls or you get water on it. he even proposed a far possibility of including a shaving mini-game. lol

I want to see how the graphical quality of the game has held up. Remember, Kojima said that the graphical quality would be at least as good as what we saw at the Tokyo game show a couple years ago. If they match that level of quality I will be very happy.

06-22-2007, 03:12 AM
^^ MILR do you have your PS3 yet?
Remember, Kojima said that the graphical quality would be at least as good as what we saw at the Tokyo game show a couple years ago.He never said that. Regarding graphics, he did say that the TGS 2005 trailer represented what the PS3 could do, and then he said that what we saw at E3 2006 would get better. Considering that the PS3 has to process a lot more things than graphics, they will have to find a balance between game processing and graphics processing, so don't expect TGS05 graphics level simply because not all of the hardware resources can be dedicated to graphics.
But you just will ignore all common sense and believe what you'd like to believe until disappointment hits you with a golf club in the head, won't you? ;)
LiquidEagle
06-22-2007, 08:14 AM
The graphics are TGS 05 level (or better with the motion blur now), just stylized more so less detail is generally visible.
Some things are better and some things are worse, but there's really absolutely nothing to complain about. Even those gameplay screenshots that looked "meh" back at TGS 2006 aren't representative of the graphics judging by what the gameplay looked like (I'm not talking about animations and whatever, that will surely improve as well).
I just wouldn't bother to discuss the graphics as I'm confident I'll have nothing to worry about. I'd rather discuss the storyline or the gameplay, but that's MILR for you ;)

your joking right? lol. because as a 3D artist i can see the differences between the 2. the TGS trailer was just better. Snake and Octacon had more polygons/higher texture resolution compare to the E3 06 trailer, which is understandable since they are doing more with the latter demo.
The lighting in the remaster trailer is definitely better than before. More important the frame rate has improve alot!

No, I do not have my PS3 yet.
Omega told me that he was going to be sending it out soon (perhaps in a weeks time I think he said) about two months ago when he asked for my shipping information.
However, it did not arrive. I finally contacted him and he responded by apologizing for the delay, but did not give me any additional information.
So I'm totally at a loss when it comes to when my PS3 will arrive.
I realize I'm getting it for free so I'm not in a rush. I'm very thankful for it!
However, I'm hoping he will contact me again and at least give me a general time line of when I might get it.

If it's in South America I think we can count on some kind of a jungle since MGS3 taught us to land several miles outside of the target and infiltrate from there... Or you can ride a truck in :-p
I just don't expect a full-blown jungle, which wouldn't make sense to begin with.
I expect the first game to be short and confined as much as MGS2 was for MGS3 since it is their first PS3 game and online will take a portion of their development. but who knows. in any case, I know I'll love whatever they throw at me. :)
Short? From what we know, I think MGS4 will be even longer than MGS3. That's the feeling I'm getting.

Yeah I mean c'mon at one point he complained to Sony that he wanted bigger Blu-Rays.
I doubt Kojima was doing that just for PR.
I expect at least 35hours of solid gameplay from this title.
I mean, just the fact that it has 5 locations ensures we are in for a loooooong ride.
Short? From what we know, I think MGS4 will be even longer than MGS3. That's the feeling I'm getting.
no I mean wearing shorts...*trying disgracefully to cover up*. Snake would look much more badd-ass wearing shorts!
okay, maybe as long/short as MGS3- which by the way I am fine with. it is about how much fun you have not how long a game is. MGS3 took me about 15 hours or so to finish, iirc, and I enjoyed it.
throw in online and you can forget to ever sleep again for the next two weeks.
Yeah I mean c'mon at one point he complained to Sony that he wanted bigger Blu-Rays.
I think he made that comment in a mag as a candid way to show they are pushing boundries. I would be very surprised if the game ended up filling even 20G. and don't forget about dual layer BDs. :)
in any case, with such graphics and technology as we've seen last year, I cannot complain about anything if I had the MILRs.
I mean, just the fact that it has 5 locations ensures we are in for a loooooong ride.
the thing is, I would never rush such a game. I feel sorry for those who wait months and years for games like KH2 only to finish it in 7 hours or something. the KH++ launched in Japan and in less than 24 hours, a YouTube video was showing the ending...:moon:
I take my time with these fantastic offerings. I look around, search levels, experiment, backtrack, try different approaches, etc. I try to get the whole fix. after all, it isn't everyday you get to play such projects. ;)

Hello Z,
I'm not offended. Don't worry, I know you were just teasing me.
I don't mind at all being teased about aliens, because extraterrestrial life is one of my favorite topics. If they could integrate a storyline about an extraterrestrial organism into MGS that would be awesome!
By the way, Crysis does look very impressive. I'm certain that MGS will not match it, but I hope it comes close.
The more you post in this thread, the more we know you are having totally wrong impressions of what Metal Gear Solid is about, MILR. Please forget about extraterrestrial beings and colorful stuff because you will never find that in MGS games. Please stop.

curryking,
That is not answering my question. It seems like the world of MGS is already pretty wild. You have all kinds of creatures including vampires, cyborgs, spirits possessing people, and all sorts of things. It seems almost anything is possible in the MGS universe.
curryking1
06-23-2007, 02:24 PM
MGS isn't about extraterrestrials invading earth. It's about more real world conflicts and exploring real world scenarios through somewhat more believable unreal world scenarios or even extreme style forecasted world scenarios for the future, with an over the top coat of paint.
MGS is about people doing amazing things, or grotesque things, or supernatural things, or evil things to each other.
Why are there things like spirits? This guy is from Japan. Hideo Kojima isn't Tom Clancy where everything is confined to realism. Spirits, speaking to the dead, psychological things, these things have the same meaning as they would in a fictitious historical rendition of history (that's the weirdest ending of a sentence ever lol).
There are a few animes that are about history, but are modified slightly with magic and spirit meeting because they help to explain some sort of theme with entertaining/different means. Same as in MGS. Fear, Joy, Fury, Sorrow, End, and Pain. These all are people with supernatural abilities who represent obstacles, literally and figuratively, for Big Boss in MGS3.

curryking,
I was not thinking so much of aliens invading earth as some human organization getting a hold of an alien organism or DNA and weaponizing it. For example, remember how in the Aliens movies the military wanted to get a sample of the DNA so they could make a weapon? What if one of the members of the private mercenary companies made some sort of super soldier that utilized alien DNA or some kind of disease?
Of course what would be really interesting if a common threat to all of humanity arrived in the MGS universe. I wonder how all the different factions would react?
curryking1
06-23-2007, 02:35 PM
Ok, that's an interesting application.
But there's one major reason why I don't think it will happen.
MGS is talking about real world scenarios. Yes, maybe aliens isn't that far fetched for the MGS universe to be used as a weapon.
But there are things that are more applicable to the real world. MGS2 was about information control, the internet. MGS4, is going to explore 'the future of real war.' That means from MGS2 it's going to take the nanomachines to control minds of soldiers in war and emotions in war, and it's also going to go further into biotechnology and using biology as weapons.
This biological weapons, like the Gekkos or Rays from MGS2, that's kind of like your 'using aliens as weapons' but it's not aliens. It's using biotechnology, which is a real world thing, yet over the top by a little or a lot.
And about introducing a common threat. I'm not saying it's uninteresting, but please understand me. The real world, there is no real common threat. MGS is exploring a future world of ours, where there probably will again, be no common threat. MGS is to explore the future world where every one has weapons, and so many people are fighting, and racing for technology and Metal Gears, and what could happen if this continued for X amount of time and finally the situation exploded into some grand war.
A common enemy or introducing an alien is something maybe similar, but not the best way to explore real world scenarios right now. And maybe you're thinking by saying there should be a common enemy it will be telling the world to unite against something? You see, that's not a very effective way of talking about a real world situation in my opinion. The world is not that simple, and to talk about more complicated issues, something like that just isn't effective to me.

Lemme smack some sense into the alien hybrid theory that is being induced into MGS4. Guys, Solid Snake is out there for his last ever outing. Kojima wants Snake to die in peace in some gun blazing adrenaline filled scenario. Not some tentacle hentai where Snake gets tortured by so called 'extra terrestrials' and his genes get transported to Uranus. Where he gets cloned n reproduced with Alien DNA to battle mini-gear-rex's.
Ahhh Bollocks!! ... I fell for you guys trap >_< Wait for E3 ok. Quit messing with my fav series. Your scenario sux! Leave it to the pro, in this case Kojima Pro ;)

Funny that MPO didn't have any jungle sections. I guess it's because they had to keep the map design simple and PSP would have had a hard time processing something as detailed as MGS3's jungle. Still, it was surprisingly long and varied, IMO.

I dont think, the PSP would have had many problems with that, but rather the memory constraints (esp. the SLOW UMD drive) were the culprit. Looking at GTA VCS, R* did a great job at converting it to the PSP, esp. considering that the PSP is such a small system. (tbh. the PSP is a magnificient piece of engineering. Major amounts of bandwidth thru eDRAM etc. and the like)
Kojima (or some of his affiliates) said, they converted the MGS3 engine to the PSP at nearly full speed, but the PS2 version can rely on a (compared to UMD) rather fast DVD drive for streaming stuff. Imho, MGPO was a great game, but lacked in certain occasions (especially cutscenes, those pictorials were just "bad" compared to what we saw in MGS3).
I hope, MGS4 is a bit less linear than MGS2 and 3 were. In those, you couldnt do anything else then following the main story. As Kojima said, you are in a war zone, my view on this is more of a sandbox environment. And I hope, they do at least a little bit of this (and GREAT cutscenes, we all know, Kojima is a movie god :D)
Considering there were some slowdowns during gameplay, I think the PSP was almost fully exploited as it was. Regarding loading/streaming, all the environments and music were fully loaded in memory in just a few seconds and I doubt they used all of the available memory considering PSP renders at a lower resolution than PS2, that it has better compression support and that some environments weren't too big, although others were. The UMD drive was always idle during gameplay. It only worked during load times, codec conversations and cutscenes.
As for the cutscenes: well, MPO is a "cheap" MGS title. It doesn't have the same production values as MGS2 or MGS3, but it feels like they successfully made an almost nearly as good game with like a 5th of the budget. It is so long, so varied and in many ways so different to traditional MGS titles, yet it manages to feel like the best PSP game yet.
In any case, I liked MPO in all ways and I was still very impressed with the not-so-far-from-PS2 visuals.
Regarding MGS4, it's been confirmed that it uses a streaming engine and that the war zones are not linear, as there's always a way to sneak through them and/or go Rambo on the battlefield.

Also, regarding the MGS DGN -- has anybody read the Psycho Mantis fight? It's very awesome how they handled it, and if the movie is indeed based on Shadow Moses, that's how the movie should do it!
wait a sec; did Koji say there will be a playable at E3 a while back? I know TGS will have one, but did he say something about E3?
suddenly, I have another game to define E3 along with Killzone. if only FF13 would be shown in a playable form I would have the best threesom in my life! (or is that foursome?).

the story behind him is pretty shady, theres still a few blank spaces that could possibly be filled - if he was unimprotant he'd have just been cut after MGS 2, but he's back, and they're trying to make him likeable - i reckon that could be because he's the spiritual successor.
I also wonder whose side he is going to be on... because now he's a mean motherf*cker, who ain't gonna take no crap from nobody...

He doesn't look like BB at all, so I doubt it. But, if they were able to isolate the Super Soldier gene, it's possible that they've created an army of clones who doesn't look like him. They wouldn't stop at Raiden, but rather continue producing them.

I believe there will be a huge plot twist where we find out that Big Boss was actually born from Metal Gear and the snake lineage is able to fire Nuclear Missles from their quadriceps.
The reason why Solid Snake survived longer than Liquid Snake was because Liquid received the dominate, but unfortunately irradiated genes.
But the main plot of the Metal Gear series is truly just a conspiracy devised by the patriots to keep Duke Nukem Forever from surfacing to the masses.
...I know...I just felt random....

^Knock that MILR out of your head dangnabbit!
MGS is hilarious.
It makes people say awesome stuff like 'Super Soldier Gene.' :)
My guess is... Another Snake is made.
Why I think my guess is wrong... I think that would make for a horrible plot. I don't know why, but I don't think that's what Kojima has in store for us.
Well.. the only thing that I can picture though is that, or Snake is cured. Yet I'm still leaning towards the former, even if I still think it's wrong...

Okay, I need help here:
With Metal Gear's 20th anniversary fast approaching, I wanted to celebrate. I want to play through every Metal Gear, but I can't figure out how. I could either go in chronological order of release, or chronological order of events in the series. Which do you guys think I should do, and when should I start? I was originally planning to play them all leading up to July 7th and finish on that day, but maybe I should start on the 7th? Please give me suggestions on order and when I should start/finish... I need help! It's not really that big of a deal I guess but I want to do something cool :-D
Just play them whenever you have time. I will play them all in cronological order of events, not release, when MGS4 gets a final release date.

how can i play them all on my PS3 or are we only talking PS1 onwards here??
You can play MGS1, 2 and 3 on your PS3, although if you care about rumble you'll have to use your PS2.
Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, the old classic games, are included in MGS3: Subsistence.
The only canonical Metal Gear game that would require another system is Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

Every cutscene/video crashed and with some strange, loud, beeeep sounds. 8/
Too bad. I'm sure it's on a priority list of games to be tested and fixed on software BC. MGS3 works great, and so does the original MGS2.

But more important to me was MGS3S, as it was borked in update 1.7 (but fixed in 1.8)I think MGS3 Subsistence had some minor glitches in 1.60. I specifically remember Snake's leg having random seizures  I guess the emulation had more glitches than those as I didn't play it from beginning to end, so that's probably why they decided to leave it out until they polished the emulator a bit more. In 1.80, I didn't see those "seizures" or whatever they were, everything seemed totally all right. 1.81 is said to be a bit better than 1.80 in terms of PS2 BC, by the way.

^^MGS5 confirmed :)
And they can always make a prequel, even if he dies. The movie world opened this endless coffin of often unwanted sequels.
Interestingly, videogame prequels/sequels don't ruin the original so many times as many movie prequels/sequels do. Oftenly, the changes are for the better.

^^Agreed. Matrix wasn't supposed to be a trilogy but after the Wachowski brothers understood how well it would sell, with a hefty load of help from the movie studios they made two sequels, which both are quality-wise far from the original.
Original Nightmare on the Elm Street was great, almost none of the sequels weren't. Ocean's 11 was great, 12 wasn't. Dunno about 13.
But MGS3 was better than MGS2. Haven't still played MGS enough to say anything about it.
Well, The Matrix trilogy quality is a matter of overall perception, IMO. The storyline is actually consistent on all three, as there even are hints in the first one about things that happen in the following ones. However, the first movie was self-contained and satisfactory on itself, while the others have some intentional plot holes that the viewers have to fill for themselves and the Wachowski brothers had a lot of freedom to create their vision as they really wanted it to be like instead of having to take the more commercial approach that the first one was pretty much forced to take. Couple all that with the complex process that movie making is with its problems and imperfect solutions, and the result is bound to disgust many average moviegoers.
Anyway, back on topic... I'm totally sure Snake will die somehow :cry2: Although that doesn't mean he couldn't get back to life somehow as well :-p

I like the entire matrix trilogy!
I read in a magazine about 8 years ago that Kojima liked the first one so much that he arranged a meeting with either the Wachowsky brothers or with John Gaeta (The Matrix trilogy VFX supervisor), I can't remember who exactly, well before MGS2 was announced. There's a bullettime-like moment in the Tanker section (when Olga shoots Snake with her special knife + single bullet gun) that I think definately has something to do with that.

The second one was average.
The last one was awful.

he did talk to them, but it could be just a chat between creators with nothing serious project wise. as for the Matrix influence in MGS2, as with every single visual media production from milk commercials to movies to cartoons to you name it; every body was doing the martix bullet time slow motion camera swirl- and I loved each and every single one of them.

Nah, I have the NES version (for my birthday when I turned 16 or so, my friend gave me the NES version of Metal Gear in the box with the map & stuff), and it's not the same. A little bit of it is similar, but the MSX has that definitive Metal Gear feel, while the NES one definitely does not.

Well last week on the KP report they said that MGS4 still wasn't confirmed for E3. So could this mean no MGS4 next?:shifty: Though I doubt it. This could mean we might get a demo by the end of the month.
Maybe they're keeping the major final MGS4 trailer and/or demo for TGS (which is just two months away) while we'll only see something like another teaser at E3. However, if there's going to be a demonstration later this month, I'd be surprised if it wasn't ready now and in time for E3 next week.
If MGS4 has indeed been delayed until 2008, I could understand that we wouldn't see too much of it next week in benefit of TGS. However, the next PSM is going to have MGS4 on their next cover, so...
