I don't get the magazine but I'll get it if it's going to feature something interesting about MGS4!

Only 5 days, I'll give it a look and yes I do have a scanner.

It was so worth it that I'm being quite serious about this, but I'll see what I do. I don't think I'll be that extreme this time. I've ignored FFXII news for the last two years as well because of the same reason, but this is not the same.

This rumor stuff is getting ridiculous...but really, I wouldn't mind the game being ported to 360-as long as the game is built from the ground up and customized to the PS3 like Kojima says it will....a port later on so other fans could enjoy it ala Substance wouldn't be such a bad idea.

But the consensus when people speculate on the game coming to 360 seems to be under the assumption of a simultaneous release or an engine designed for both platforms. According to interviews and they way Kojima develops his Metal Gear games-it's VERY unlikely...

But there's nothing wrong with speculating I guess...;)

Also, I've been thinking we might be treated to English voices in the next trailer, but with MGS3 that didn't happen until the August before release... can't wait to hear them and I'm SUPER excited for this! I personally think Gears looks pretty weak, so... yes lol. I don't think many games have shown that much in terms of graphics as of yet.

The only two things that look completely next gen to me are 1. FF XIII and 2. the car models from GTHD. I think that's it. MGS4's character models too actually.

Seriously, I don't think I can name a game that is currently out that looks all next gen to me, not one. I think the only exception is PGR3 actually, that totally hit my expectations for what PGR would look like in next gen. In car view was fantastic.

For other games not out yet, Warhawk, when in the sky looks pretty fantastic, KZ should be one to show some serious technical wonder, and Drake (what is the name? I haven't got in stuck in my head yet) looks amazing too.

O ya, lastly, yes, MGS3, it does look ***king awesome lol.

GoW strenght resides in its art rather than on an extraterrestrial technology. "Technologically" speaking, MGS4 will certainly blow it away (literally), but since people consider that detailed settings (one of the focuses of GoW, a good game but a HIGHLY overrated one) are more exacting than numerous characters on screen, special effects (we know Kojima is a perfectionnist in this domain in particular), AI, destructible environnments, physics and animation, sound, I think that there will be individuals that will still refer to GoW as the absolute reference...
Man, there are some cases there that think GoW is on the same league as the demo of Uncharted (Naughty Dog coming game)...Some even try to convince me that Epic's game is THAT close to Killzone trailer. It's not fanboyism (well, partially...), it'S mere ignorance !

I love metal gear games, but the premise of this one tops all those that precede it IMO. Old Snake is just so darn bad ass. He is old, wise, and can still kick your ass--all incredibly attractive traits for a hero character. It makes him just so much more appealing that he has to overcome the adversity a deteriorating body. Also, the ability to change allegiances with different 'sides' makes the gameplay possibilities and thought required to go into playing the game that much more strategic--a thinking man's metal gear. Top that off with what looks to be one of the most interesting story lines, and it seems to be the most epic of all games this new generation (IMO).

My fingers jumped to the keys:
DUH!
;)

MGS is always an epic game.
MGS1 did it, MGS2 did it (kinda), MGS3 did it and now MGS4 will do it.

Only HL2 comes close to challenging MGS in terms of 'epicness'.

What I hate the most is when Xbox fanboys compare dull un-artistic games such as Gears Of War with MGS. That drives me mad and we will see a lot of that.

How the best told story in the best possible way with awesome gameplay and graphics gets compared to a 'broken' run and gun game with the most dullest graphics I've seen is beyond me.

MGS1 did it, MGS2 did it (kinda), MGS3 did it and now MGS4 will do it.

Actually, I think you could argue MGS2 is the most epic of the MGS's so far. Its trailer from E3 2000 was not only released on DVD in Japan, but it also was the first time people saw a trailer of something not playable at E3 and immediately wanted to make it game of show. I remember seeing a developer's timeline of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 in OPM way back, and there was actually a spot in its timeline that basically said, "MGS2 trailer is shown at E3 2000, and other developers have to go back and redo stuff because the standards have been raised"

I think it's the most epic game trailer in the history of videogames, and the first weeks it was released I think it sold like 1.8 million copies in America alone... whereas MGS3 (even though I think 3 was better) sold like... 290,000 in the same amount of time :'(

Back then that was a pretty big deal :-p

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/286/edgescanbackbk7.th.jpg (http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=edgescanbackbk7.jpg)

And some more infos + scans of the cover...

The cover comes in two flavours of camouflage: blue and brown.

The cover features the older Snake, in the usual MGS style with blue/silver camouflage. Edge talk with Hideo about MGS4, asses the series impact and lasting influence.

Features:

Sega Racing Studios & Sega Rally
Solid States (MGS)
Dave Perry

Q: so whats the MGS4 thing? just a preview? or a HK interview? or both?

A: Both, plus small interviews with Kensuke Yoshitomi (about Boktai's and Lunar Knights on DS), and Noriaki Okamura (Portable Ops).

Q: Is the Metal Gear Solid feature in this issue an overview of the series (like the Zelda one before Christmas), an interview, or a normal extended preview?

A: Edge talk with Hideo about MGS4, asses the series impact and lasting influence.

The two articles worth reading are really poor.

The MGS 4 article is five pages of "possibly, maybe" - and even then in the context of the background story. I really don't expect Edge articles to be bloated rambling on a games possible story.

Comapred to the fascinating visits of earlier titles, which talked about the developing of the actual game, and showed signs of prolonged contact with the team - the building levels in lego factoid sticks out - this is a very sad state of affairs.

The interview with HK is about his split from Konami. Great to hear from him, but not that fascinating.

My source but he has no source (http://www.metalgearsolid.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338165#338165)

To begin with, yes. However, Big Boss surpassed The Boss. Throughout Snake Eater, when they have their little fights, Big Boss does progressively better until he defeats her at the end, and she wasn't holding back. Though Big Boss was older by the time of Outer Heaven & Zanzibar Land, Solid Snake still defeated him when no one else could, and I'd still place my wager on Solid Snake in any fight :-D

02-13-2007, 03:25 PM

It's pretty easy to avoid, the system is if you just run perpendicular to the line of fire, it won't hit you, and then you just need to find one of many trees in the thing. Very easy boss battle when you know what you're doing. Even the melee attacks are easy to avoid when you do it a few times on extreme, just do a roll away, say like half a sec before she pulls off the attack, preferably over one of the two fallen tree trunks.

A little tidbit about raidens new design from Yoji Shinkawa from KP Report Session 027 (http://mp.i-revo.jp/user.php/kp-ryan/entry/52.html).

As you can see Raiden is almost falling apart, his body is not human anymore. The only parts remaining are his face, and the spine also isn't man made.

So something drastic must have happened to him since MGS2. Here's the first part of the the interview (http://mp.i-revo.jp/user.php/kp-ryan/entry/43.html)

That's a major spoiler to me :cry2: Even though it makes sense. I wouldn't believe Raiden's body is his own anymore after seeing him as the new ninja character (remember Gray Fox). I thought he could still be himself considering Olga didn't have her body replaced, but enhanced. However... remember the white blood connection between him and the Snatcher series? Kojima talked about that in an interview last summer.

Ya... somehow thru the accident that, I'm assuming, almost kills him, he becomes... more manly?

What is this? DragonBall? "If you are Saiyan and you get to the brink of death, you come back uber strong if you survive.""

Lol, j/k j/k.

But anyways, so this supposed accident actually enhances his manliness... hmmmm... quite the conundrum. Maybe it removed all his not-supposed-to-have-been-there-in-the-first-place female organs, hormones, and other parts which he might've had in MGS2?

Hmmmmm hahahhaha.

Ok... ok.. serious this time.... His vocal cords are probably messed up and he has some sort of either mechanical and electrical replacement or had some serious therapy on his throat which couldn't restore his sexy high pitched voice.

Ok, I suck at being serious.

But whatevs, I love MGS2. I think it's my favourite MGS.

As you can see Raiden is almost falling apart, his body is not human anymore. The only parts remaining are his face, and the spine also isn't man made.

On-topic-Raiden was quite gay, yet he was like a trained professional killer since what, birth? I think he is a very confused character actually, wouldn't surprise me if he becomes an enemy of Snake. Of course my theory is Snake will eventually become the next Big Boss. How awesome would it be to "BE" the bad guy and die in your own game? Now that's a great change of direction..

curryking1
02-16-2007, 03:00 AM
Dragonball was the only anime I actually watched, even if it was on some kind of unpredictable basis.

Raiden isn't gay! He's effeminate, in that he is quite soft in the way he talks and in the way he expresses emotion, but he isn't gay for crying out loud! Gay would mean Rose would be a freaking man lol!

Solid Snake won't turn into the bad guy though, I don't think. Solid Snake is just too high up on the values. Big Boss wasn't as high up on the values as Solid is, and in addition to that, he had some seriously traumatizing and 'value changing' experiences.

Did Big Boss even have that strong values? Big Boss, when you think about it, he was actually not that mentally powerful. I think he was actually kind of mentally not very adult. How connected with The Boss was he still just prior to the Virtuous Mission, he still thought of her as Battle Mom (hahaha, that was a good one, who came up with that again? Lalilulelo?). He didn't really have any real outlook on life before the Boss 'betrays' him.

To me, it seems like Big Boss was an uber soldier, only he was some average mentally protected uber soldier, who got thrust into extreme emotional situations and faced the problem of 'loyalty to country or loyalty to beliefs.' He is rarely even sure of himself, gets betrayed, what I would say is multiple times, where did he have to turn after he kills The Boss who was the one he would've turned to at a time like after MGS3 or MGS PO? He doesn't even take the name of Big Boss, and instead names himself Naked Snake because he thinks he can't handle the title, he's not emotionally stable. He might be a super soldier, but he's gone thru a lot of crap, and I don't think he could hold out.

Solid on the other hand... not ONCE has he ever crossed ANY length of the barrier of emotional unrest (love for Meryl in MGS1 does not count...) and questioned himself, questioned his purpose, questioned his ideologies, questioned why he fights for what he fights for, because he is sure of himself and he is sure, and we are sure, he is fighting the most 'good' battle.

It would be kind of crazy cool to try and take over the world as Solid, but I cannot understand how Kojima can convey a meaningful and pro-life, pro-people, pro-societal kind of message with that. I don't think so.

Snake in MGS2, after discovering the 'truth' to who is really the 'bad guy' in the Patriots, he never questions himself, he never had to kill his 'mother' or experience such loss, he never depended on anyone in the first place. Snake is just too strong willed to come to that. Something seriously *****d up and unforeseen is going to happen for Solid to become Bigger Boss or whatever the name would be. Definitely though, Snake dying in his own game after taking on the role of 'bad guy,' that would be MEGA intense.

Raiden is so not becoming the enemy of Snake though. Or at least, I cannot for the life of me see that happening. He better not go freaking insane, because Raiden's an awesome character to me now, I'd HATE for that to happen honestly.

In the Metal Gear universe, I think just about any character can suffer a mental breakdown...Snake is indeed a complex character, and like you said, it's his will that is his strongest attribute and greatest strength. Despite being an inferior clone, he's managed to create a legacy for himself, and has managed to go toe-to-toe with Big Boss and Liquid Snake and come out victorious.

Despite all that though, every man has a breaking point. Maybe Snake is tired of fighting the good fight. Maybe he's too old to see the greater good that he's doing anymore. Or maybe, he just isn't happy. He certainly is stronger in mind than Big Boss, but he's had to suffer tragedies just as great, and maybe MGS4 is finally snakes breakdown. With Merly in the picture, I don't think any possible scenario can be ruled out.

It seems at the end of each Metal Gear, there's always a lighter tone to settle the drama that's taking place, and Snake does indeed always seem to have the answers and solutions to get the most out of life. But for some reason, I get the feeling that Snake is growing weary of his surroundings, and I don't think he'll be able to pass to torch over to Raiden so easily.

And defend him all you want, he is still gay!!! j/k;) Seriously though-they could've made him at least more sure in himself if he had to have that soft-spoken voice. They could've made him sarcastic or something.

btw-as much as I loved DBZ...(DBGT is awful) I think the series could've ended better, and I think Vegeta was the most complex character that never got his share of kudos. The series should've ended with a fight between them...But right now I have a new love-Naruto. Hand's down surpasses DBZ in just about every way. The early episodes are a bit slow on the action, and there's quite a bit of BS episodes lately, but the core story is superb! I recommend if you haven't tried it...

Definitely man, nice read there Omni.

I hope Solid... is solid though.... what a bad play on words I just made, it sounded awesome in my head, I didn't put it down properly, it was supposed to sound really cool.. but seriously, I hope he's solid enough he won't crack thru whatever he goes through.

Meryl will be Snake's backbone to success (good success! lol!)! Maybe... lol. Snake is my freaking hero though. He's just so righteous and goodwilled, and he's so BADASS! Man, I love Snake.

Fights for the world, and every time he speaks it's always in the same legendary tone and method of speaking. Like during funny sequences, he's just funny in what he says and acts, but when he's serious and business, same voice, but you can tell it's on. Especially during the most intense scenes, like the one with Fortune. "But let's get one thing straight, I didn't kill your husband." Always so cool and badass 24/7, totally unshakable since we truly met him in MGS1.

He's definitely the avenue for Kojima to speak of what is on his own mind. That's the only possible thing I can think of for Snake to stay good the whole way thru, but anything could happen, Kojima might use someone else to be that avenue this time around too.

I honestly don't know what I'd think of him if he just cracked. He is getting older, and like you said, every man has his breaking point. O dear god, thinking about this stuff is intense.

P.S. I just don't watch anime at all lol. I don't even remember how I started watching Dragonball, something really weird probably happened one day, lol! I hear Naruto, One Piece, and others are really good shows though, some of my friends are pretty into this kind of stuff.

Hideo Kojima, head of Konami's super-studio, Kojima Productions, and the brain behind the Metal Gear Solid series, has laid bare his own bizarre and exciting vision of an online multiplayer zombie game. Although Koj (as we love to think he likes to be called) is unlikely to unleash his crazy apocalypse on the gaming world, since he reckons that there are too many undead-battlers out there already.

"The zombie idea I have is a bit different," Kojima told Edge magazine during an interview published in this month's issue, explaining that he's "less interested in the idea of the living dead than the fact you can turn people just by biting them". Perhaps a new idea for any third-party peripheral makers looking for the next big Wii gadget?

Kojima goes on to explore his idea, stressing that he'd like to offer a "truly online version" of the zombocalypse. "Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles." So far, so very, very Kojima.

"They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch!" Koj continues. "The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well."

Apart from the terse, hands-off treatment of undead life, we're all but sold on Koj's grand plan. Though we have to disagree with his view that that there are too many zombie games around - come on, can there ever be enough to satisfy our sinister hunger? But despite his reservations Kojima won't rule the idea out, saying that, should he decide that the timing is right, he will "take some time to prepare [a zombie title]. Very seriously".

For more in-depth Kojima conversation, pick up a copy of Edge magazine #173, on sale right now, or alternatively head to the official Edge site. i've just had a great idea for this game. at some point in the game snake has to walk through a gas filled building. as you progress the screen changes colour until it turns red and snake dies. there seems to be no way through and there isn't enough time. so whats the answer. you have to shake the controller to wake snake.

curryking1

I don't like that one too much lol! No offense meant. How about one where you have to pull something out that's stuck, like a rusted... switch, anything stuck or something, and you have to shake the controller?

But lobbing grenades, gotta lob grenades with the controller, that'd be sick.

In the trailer there was actually ragdoll, But only when the soldiers got Blown up by a grenade and when one of them guys in yellow fell of the building, Anyway really looking forward to seeing more Screens/Videos of this, Cant wait to see how it looks now:clap:

We need more MGS4 info!

The world's greatest video game magazine, EDGE, has a big Kojima Productions feature in its upcoming issue. Japanese correspondent Christophe Kagotani visited us last month to interview Mr. Kojima for the story. He was also kind enough to join me in the studio and record a short talk that we'll broadcast soon on The KP Report podcast.

Actually, he wanted to make the players feel so concerned about Snake in MGS3 that he seriously thought about removing the "continue" feature. If Snake died, the game would have been really over. That didn't make it to the final game because it was detrimental, but he did think about it.

However, in MGS: Portable Ops, when the members of your unit are killed, they can't be "resurrected", as far as I know. And if your entire unit is being killed, you must wave the white flag or simply die. That's a way to get that gameplay feature working somehow in the series.

Why do you think that? Just becaue Kojima loves innovation and online, it deoesn't mean that there'll be a downloadable demo :dur:
the game is aimed to release by the end of this year. even if it doesn't, by September they would have a demo ready. since it is the biggest thing on PS3's radar coming out (FF13 is a year later) it would be idiotic not to have a demo for it out. I just put two and two together and came out with a 5.

Time to bring up the behemoth!

As you all know by now, we didn’t have anything to show at GDC. However, Mr. Kojima will be keynoting the GO3 expo in Perth, Australia on March 31. All you folks in western Australia should definitely check it out!

http://www.go3.com.au/html/conference.html

You see that line-up? Not only will Hideo Kojima be there to talk about how technology has influenced work on current projects, you can also check out talks from Suda 51 (No More Heroes), Rod Fergusson (Gears of War), Harvey Smith (another Invisible War vet), and Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Rez).

Lucky Australians...

Anyhoo, maybe we'll get some new news out of there :)

At one of the recent GDC conferences, Suda51 of Grasshopper Manufacture gave a brief keynote about an upcoming event subtitled "Snake VS Zombie".

http://www.metalgearsolid.org/admin/data/upimages/uploaded/thumbs/hoppers01.jpg

Essentially a party with live music (provided by such big names as Norihiko Hibino and Akira Yamaoka among others), this marks Grasshopper's second annual "HOPPER'S" event and boasts its two primary special guests, Hideo Kojima and Shinji Mikami (Biohazard / Resident Evil). What this means exactly remains to be seen, although it may fall in line with some of Kojima's previous interest in creating a zombie-related video game.

http://www.metalgearsolid.org/admin/data/upimages/uploaded/hoppers02.jpg

The event is planned for April 14 at Club Asia, and will start at 14:00 Tokyo time. For those interested in attending, tickets will be available for purchase on March 18 from the Grasshopper website.

Hayter continues to voice the iconic Solid Snake, while joined by Quinton Flynn (Raiden), Paul Eiding (Roy Campbell) and Christopher Randolph (Hal "Otacon" Emmerich). Kris Zimmerman, who's acted as director of the recording sessions in the past, will also oversee work on Metal Gear Solid 4.

Look like Kotaku live blogged it, nothing new but their will be an interview later.

What's probably the main event of the weekend is about to get started. Kojima is the biggest name attending the GO3 conference, and he's also tipped to be the only one actually showing something off: a shiny new MGS4 trailer. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Fingers crossed, eh?

3:06pm - We're running 35 minutes late. Lot's of late-minute tinkering with the AV. He's a stickler for perfection. But we're underway, and I think he brought his own translator. Best translator of the weekend? Yes!

3:08pm - Looking at the evolution of video games, and how Metal Gear shaped that. In the 80's, everything was about shooting. So Metal Gear was born. I feel another life story coming on, so settle in for the long haul.

3:16pm - Lots of footage of Metal Gear. "It's very boring, isn't it?". Lots of laughter, lots of nodding heads. "What a big duct that is!", "it's a lot like new Metal Gear, isn't it?". Funny stuff, he's in fine form.

3:25pm - Time marches on. We're at Metal Gear Solid now, and he's demoing the intro. "His face is made of dots!". For a game that's nine years old, it's still looking pretty good. Kojima runs, he's discovered, he runs away and...we have first box-hiding gag. It goes as expected, laughs all round.

3:30pm - The timeline stuff continues, and we're at MGS2. Another demo, another intro. "Can I skip this dialogue" jokes are swimming through my mind. He's not too happy with some of the tanker sequence, thinks it looks glitchy, but it looks fine to me.

3:36pm - Talking about how they came up with the setting for MGS3. "Where should I hide my snake this time?". I am the only person who chortles, which is a little embarrassing. Snakes are in the jungle, so the game should be in the jungle. Now he's demoing MGS3, and apologising for not being able to eat Koala in the game.

3:43pm - Alright, time for MGS4. He's talking up the psychological warfare stuff, where you freak out the warring soldiers. He runs the trailer that ends with Snake holding a gun in his mouth. Not new. Sorry.

3:49pm - Shows a screen of the systems Metal Gear has appeared on (or at least developed primarily for). Sorry kids, no 360 there.

3:50pm - And we're done. No new trailer, no announcments. Let down? Yeahh, but probably shouldn't have been expecting too much. Anyways, got to run, our interview is right after the talk. I'll see if I can drag anything out of him there. Luke Plunkett

GO3: Kojima Talks Metal Gear History, Future

GO3: Kojima Talks Metal Gear History, Future Innovation, by design or by necessity, seems to be Hideo Kojima's motto. Beginning his address to the Australian GO3 conference in English, Kojima-san started out with the standard pleasantries, complimenting the Perth area, and mentioning he was "surprised there weren't kangaroos everywhere!"

The rest of the speech would be in Japanese (translated for the audience via radio transmitted headsets), and after the language transition, Kojima said that the topic of his speech today would be "game technology evolution." Beginning with a mention that "every game has rules" - such as when you play a game of cards, he went on to describe the way many layers have been placed on top of the basic rules in modern games, such as design, sound effects, story, voice acting, music, FMV and online code.

With so much content in a modern game, we must now "collaborate with the experts in each field" (such as a musician). Eventually, he says, games will be in full collaboration with other industries, leading to "one [coherent form of] digital entertainment".

Progress Through History

Kojima said he would show us this evolution using his games (primarily the Metal Gear series) as an example. In the 80s, non-abstract action games were primarily spaceship shooting games, such as Konami's Scramble. Metal Gear subverted this standard by not being about shooting - it was about "trying to form the tension of hide and seek".

It came about because 21 years ago, Kojima was asked to make a game on the MSX home computer, a "non mainstream" platform with specs below the Famicom (NES). It was very difficult to make an action game on such a low-spec machine, and Kojima demonstrated the limited sprite capabilities of the MSX with a quick comparison - he compared the arcade version of Gradius to the pitiful MSX port.

The MSX could only display four sprites horizontally at once, and to handle Gradius it has to 'fake' eight sprites by displaying enemy ships only once every other frame, which caused them to flash on and off - "can you see the flicker", he said.

The Concepts Behind Metal Gear

So to make a combat game he had to "change the idea". He had to come up with a concept that limited the number of sprites and bullets on screen at one time. He "thought of 'The Great Escape' [movie]" and that the concept of an escape could be done. But this wasn't good enough: Kojima felt that "games need heroes" and that "no-one wants to play a character that just escapes." So he thought "why not make my main character sneak in - a stealth game, and this all added up to Metal Gear... the birth of my stealth game."

The graphics couldn't scroll, so the design had to be based on single screens - Kojima showed us a scene from the original Metal Gear (stating with humility" "I'm a little embarrassed to show you this now"), and he demonstrated the design of each screen, such that four objects would never line up horizontally. The main gameplay was about avoiding being seen by a limited number of guards or surveillance cameras (he showed a scene where snake must sneak into an elevator, joking "I'm not sure why the guards are taking a break").

When Snake was discovered, the gameplay changed to become almost a puzzle game "like Pac-Man", where Snake must avoid the guards like they were Pac-Man's ghosts. A final innovation came with the addition of an in-game story, because "there weren't any stories at that time in action games", and he thought the hide and seek game needed a story to justify why you were sneaking.

The Evolution Of Metal Gear

When asked to create a sequel for the same platform, Kojima "had the same restrictions" so "had to bring in new ideas" to keep it fresh. He said he ditched the puzzle game aspect, and went for more realism - the concept behind Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was "how you sneak in to an area." Enemies now had a 'field of vision' rather then only seeing what was straight ahead, and while the screen still didn't scroll, the player had widened vision via a radar.

Sound was now implemented as a gameplay feature, where you could get caught, but could also distract the guards with sound. While it was still a 2D game, height was implemented so you could crawl into a duct ("what a big duct it is" joked Kojima about the on-screen example) or hide under a desk to avoid detection. He explained that basically all of the systems in Metal Gear games today were present in Metal Gear 2, back in 1990.

In a brief aside about his text adventure games Snatcher and Policenauts (where Kojima explored his cinematic ambitions, now possible because of the storage capacity of the CD-ROM), we were back on to Metal Gear. The 3D consoles allowed another level of gameplay, and Kojima wanted to create a true "3D atmosphere - hide and seek in a 3D world".

Metal Gear Solid was named for its star, but also because for the first time the environment was 3D - it had volume, and was 'solid'. To create the feeling of being in this 3D world, a three-camera system was developed. First was the traditional overhead camera, same as the 2D games, and it was complemented by the first person view, where "the player shares Snake's view". The third camera, which Kojima considers "very innovative" was the "cinematic view", where the camera pulls down when you push against a wall, and allowed for some very dramatic gameplay set pieces.

To MGS2 And Beyond

Next, Kojima detailed what he tried to achieve with Metal Gear Solid 2. DVD-ROM and the 128-bit CPU of the PS2 allowed a lot more freedom and detail graphically ("this machine was a monster high-spec machine") - but he "didn't just want to make it high polygon, make it real", instead he wanted to emphasise immersion and atmosphere, particularly with environmental effects: "MGS2's concept was 'environment'."

He said that: "In MGS1 you were just in a little box, but in MGS2, I wanted to create a sense of smell, of atmosphere, and temperature, and this was a big challenge". It was more realistic, with more environmental interaction and first person shooting, but instead of using the CPU power to make the characters more detailed, Kojima used the power to "make it almost as if you could feel the air."

He then demonstrated several of the effects in Metal Gear Solid 2, from rain to heat to wind. The game also used motion capture of real actors for the first time, which while commonplace now, was rare at the time - and with the addition of a Hollywood produced soundtrack, the 'collaboration' element of games was in full swing.

Metal Gear Solid 3 was for the same platform ("there was no Playstation 3 yet!" he joked), and much like the MSX sequel, it forced Kojima to innovate rather then just upgrade. The concept of Metal Gear was always "where do you hide", so he thought of a jungle as a "new place for Snake to hide", thus the concept of MGS3 was "Infiltration in a natural environment."

Along with the visual change, survival aspects were introduced to match the setting - so food capture, camouflage, healing and "CQC" (close quarters combat) were added. But the now-aging PS2 had trouble keeping up with the rendering of so many trees, and Kojima made the decision to drop the framerate from 60fps to 30fps (although some new effects were added, such as glare).

While playing a demo video of MGS3, Kojima was once again critical of his work ("looks more like your backyard then a jungle"), and apologised to the Australian audience that you couldn't eat koalas in the game! He explained that even more collaboration was required for this title, with extensive motion capture used for both the cutscenes and in game animations.

On Metal Gear Solid 4's Status

Finally, Kojima-san gave us a brief run down on the concept behind the work-in-progress Metal Gear Solid 4. Snake had now run out of places to hide ("we can't make Snake go to space!"). Kojima felt his team had "exhausted the concept of the space, so why not create a situation, rather then a place where Snake had to sneak in" - and he thought of a battlezone.

And so Metal Gear Solid 4's concept is "play hide and seek in a certain situation". He explained the possibilities of this battlefield setting - it confuses the player both functionally and morally, as there are two armies in battle. Not everyone is necessarily the enemy to Snake, which creates a new tension. He then showed the audience the latest (but previously revealed) trailer of the game.

Kojima concluded with a reminder that in 1986, the hardware limitation of the MSX led to the creation of Metal Gear. With technology "evolving with the hardware", you have to "upgrade your ideas." As game tech evolves, game designers "must collaborate with other professionals", and this adds together to make art through games.

The Konami veteran believes that game design will continue to evolve, and will "never stop evolving" - he finished with the simple, but positive statement that: "Games will continue to be a collaborative art, and I believe in this concept."

Can't wait to see the next upcoming trailer, and if possible some of the new bosses and the new online multiplayer mode from MGS 3 subsistence but enhanced.

And why not a live gameplay demo at the next E3 ?

Hopefully we will see a lot of the things cometo light at E3. Sony needs to come out guns blazing like at last TGS. Although as far as MGS goes, another trailer would be perfectly fine with me.
