I started working today at The Great Indoors. It a pretty upscale home and electronics strore. Well as I was being shown the store, we came across the A/V section. I noticed that there were flyers for Blu-ray around and one of the managers started to talk to me about BR and PS3. During our conversation he sorta hinted at the PS3 being sold as Bluray player in their section. I found this intresting because what if Sony starts spreading the PS3 as the do-it-all machine, to be sold in not only gaming departments but A/V and desktop as well.
Thoughts?

Double the exposure, double the sales.
It is the cheapest BD player option. And the best value of course.

They could market it as having a storage medium too, keep your movies on the hard drive. Would make it pretty attractive compared to a standard player

It also decodes high end sound withou the need for a receiver so go figure. THis thing wont be realized until its launched. Sony really built a very interesting piece of hardware.

Just imagine, A HD-DVD Player $499 vs. a PS3 Blu-ray player $499.
Gee I wonder which one will win.

It's been done before... with the PlayStation 2. When the PS2 was first released, DVD players were still pretty expensive in Japan, so the primary reason for PS2 sales in Japan was use as a DVD player in the beginning. This was evidenced largely by the top-selling software for the PS2, which mainly consisted of movies rather than games.

This will probably entice the "mainstream" type people to fork out the ridiculous 500/600 dollars for Blu-Ray (because it's still less than a grand), right?

very clever. if they can achieve it (no doubt in my mind) than more power to them. maybe this is why Sony is not scared of there high price for a console, because it "is not a console".

The average person in a major high end electronics store doesn't play games so the fact one is a game player and the other is not is a moot point. It will help some but not to the degree you may be expecting.
Now in terms of it being cheaper than other BR players, hell yes it will drive sales.

it stands to reason that they would place them in many different shops to reflect one particular feature over another and would advertise them as the all singing dancing to those who frequent games shops.
