A look at how the RvR (Realm vs Realm) stuff will work in Warhammer online. It seems really cool. Very PvP oriented and yet you can do the PvP quests without actually fighting other people depending on what server you go on
It wasn't until clearing these quests that I got my first taste of what Mythic's RvR ("realm vs. realm" for the uninitiated) really means. I entered an area where there was a regional quest available. It seems one of our local giants had begun sobering up and was quite depressed (much of Warhammer's world seems to revolve around booze). Now any Greenskin player could, if he wished, pick up a mug of beer from environmental barrels and bring it to the giant. If he got 20 flagons of ale in him, he'd stand up, ready to return to the Bloody Sunz fold (only to be chased around by little squid creatures that had to be killed). The problem was that the Dwarves had a contrary mission of destroying 20 of our beer kegs before we could get them. We couldn't fight each other as this wasn't a PvP zone, but there was nonetheless a feeling of intense competition as Dwarf and Greenskin players ran around trying to complete the mission for a regional bonus.
This mission was what drove home to me the essence of Mythic's RvR system. No quest stands alone. Everything you do outside of personal quests actually impacts the world. Depending on which side completed that mission first, the winner would help their allies in the struggle to push through the battlefield and eventually conquer their opponent's city. While getting the beer for the giant is entirely voluntary, doing that quest made me feel like a part of something much larger than myself. There are, of course, also PvP versions of that type of regional quest, but the beauty of this particular system is that everything I did was entirely voluntary and under my control. If I never want to do PvP, I don't have to (there are even two different kinds of experience points), yet I can still make a contribution based on my preferred play style.
