View Full Version : Chinese government trying to keep PS2 out!

While piracy and pricing concerns were initially offered as explanations for the most recent delay of Sony's PlayStation 2 in China, insiders point to growing opposition to Sony's console within the Chinese government. Thereby, recently passed legislation would make it illegal for Sony to release their console in the country. The problem concerns the designation of the PlayStation 2 as a game console. China's Ministry of Culture has outlawed the import and sale of game consoles to China. The law however doesn't apply to Nintendo's recently released "iQue" platform because its manufactured and only available in China. Sony is reportedly trying to have the PlayStation 2 declared an entertainment device to try and circumvent the law, or have the legislation repealed entirely. For now however, the release of the console in China remains uncertain.

Largest market on Earth and only Nintendo has it....even with 8 year old technology.

I think Microsoft is preparing to launch in China....
Which shouldn't pose much of a problem, since China is one of the two or three places where Xbox's are manufactured.

I love Communism
Well seeing as the average Chinese family really cant afford a costly Xbox. And Microsoft is already losing money on each Xbox sold. Plus with piracy abound in China, Xbox games would be pirated as well. Microsoft is better off staying out of China. They'd probably make more profit staying out than they would going in.

Well, he did make one great point.
Xbox will lose money in China. It doesn't make money anywhere else for that matter, so why the hell not? Jump on in, the waters warm and Sony is being hassled by the life guard at the moment.

Well guess what? Lifeguard is my occupation, it's been for 4+ monthes now.
Microsoft's goal for this generation is not to pull a profit with the Xbox, but instead expand their userbase for the next system.

And they've only managed to sell as many consoles as a corporation who IS making a profit this current generation.

And they've only managed to sell as many consoles as a corporation who IS making a profit this current generation.
Which is a feat in itself considering that corporation:
- Is on it's 4th console
- Is selling said console at almost half the price
- Is consistantly outselling the Xbox in Japan by 7+x each and every week
And that this Microsoft's first console, and created it without any existing franchises to build upon. Imagine if there was no Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Star Fox, etc. for Nintendo. How good do you think the GameCube would do then? It took almost two years for Microsoft to rework some of their PC franchises for the Xbox (Midtown Madness, Crimson Skies, Links) and had to rely on new properties to help the console stay above water sales-wise - and they have done so.
Really, when the Xbox was announced did you even think it'd be able to touch Nintendo's consoles in sales? Thanks to their recent price cut and success in Japan, Nintendo has just recently pulled ahead worldwide (as far as I know, I'd be surprised if they didn't).
And in just a couple monthes Microsoft will be able to build upon an original franchise (ala Bungie) with Halo 2 - and if this game does only a fraction of what is promised, the consoles shouldn't be that close in sales anymore.

No, it didn't have any franchises to build off of, but they did have the name Microsoft and plenty of PC geeks who refused to buy a console until now, despite the fact that most of XB's best games are for PC. Crazy, isn't it?

Ah, 2004. What a grand year for gaming this should be. The next-next-gen consoles should be introducted, Sony comes out with a new handheld (amongst others), and plenty of company shifting will be done (trust me on this one - they're folding like crazy in Europe).
