Jiji News reports today that, with the PlayStation 3, Sony will be doing something it's never done for one of its game consoles. According to the news service, the company will rely in part on production facilities outside of Japan for the manufacturing of the initial batch of PlayStation 3 hardware.

Specific plans call for Chinese manufacturing facilities to begin PS3 production this Summer. The news service did not specify what parts of the system would be manufactured by the plants.
In previous generations, Sony has produced its consoles initially in Japan, moving production to overseas facilities later in the systems' lifecycle.

The news service reports that Sony plans to use its mass production capabilities as a tool to quickly take the lead in the next generation console race with Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony has announced plans to ship six PS3 million units worldwide by March of 2007, a number that its competitors have questioned.

It's really good to see that Sony is going to outsource the creation of the PS3 at first I was a litle skeptical that they could reach they lofty projected goals. However it seems that Sony has it all figured out. I just hope the PS3 is manufactured to the same quality standards in China as they are in Japan

I hope they do it as fast as possible. that will increase production and reduces cost faster.

fret not my friend. Sony has pritty damn good Quality Control. even if they were made in my back yard, they won't hit the market if they weren't good enough.

I don't know how accurate this news is. there are still small parts made out side of Japan even for the initial batches as well. even the first PSPs had the famous 'Made in China' written on some of the inside parts.

in any case, PS3 is going to be running for two markets; gaming and BD players. they have to make as many of them as fast as possible.

My year 2001 PS2 is made in China and it works perfectly after so many hours of gaming and some DVD-playing. I'm not really concerned about PS3 units or components made in China, but we'll see what happens. I quite expect a good amount of problems due to PS3 containing so many components with the consequent failure risk. Hopefully many people will attempt to take good care of their $500 and $600 consoles.

a lot of things over here (USA) are made in China, so it doesn't bother me

I might wait untill they release the PS3 in Circuit City and buy a 4 year extended warranty for my baby. ^.^

Dont wanna risk the ps3, My ps2 broke 2 months before my extended warranty ended, I abused my old one >.> The new one I got was so much better anyways. Kinda glad it happened.

The headline of that article "Your PS3 could be made by Communists!" reminds me why gaming journalism is such a sewer.

hahaha.
yes. yes it is, sadly.

I don't really care how it's made or who is making it as long as I get one and it doesn't pee on itself after my warranty expires.

I wonder why they havent exploited this option before. From an economic standpoint its downright stupid they havent jumped aboard the China production gravytrain.

Makes me question how much production of the parts really are, not the inflated number because of higher worker wages.

It would be nice to know Sony could utilize this to the point that supply is limited only by the time taken to fabricate the raw silicone. But I know thats probaly not going to happen.

'Parts' production isn't done by human hands, it's done by automated equipment, so in that case labor concerns - though certainly a factor - come second to plant and equipment. And none of that parts production will be done in China in all likelihood. Where the Chinese plants will be coming into play in this instance is in assembly, with possibly the motherboards and assorted inexpensive ICs coming from Taiwan.

It is an excellent idea to get the PS3 produced in China. China is an excellent resource for producution of electronics.

There are no worries the PS3 being 'assembled' in China, and with some parts being produced by other manufacturers other than Sony. I'd probably says that the PS3 assembly will be in China, motherboards will be from China, Cell from Sony, RSX from Sony, BluRay drive from Sony, memory from Taiwan, misc IC's from Taiwan. The controllers will probably be produced from China or Taiwan as well.

Well I think the motherboard's already been snagged up by Taiwan in terms of reports; as for memory, that will be Japan and Korea, with Samsung, Toshiba, and Elpida being the primary suppliers at the moment. XDR remember. ;)
