View Full Version : Finally an end to PC gaming snobs...?

Read any PC gaming mag and consoles ( particularly in the letter pages) are usually treated with disdain, they are looked down on, seen as 'casual'. There seems to be the attitude that if you havent spent x amount on a system, RAM, card and havent endlessly tweaked around with your rig your just not a 'real' gamer.
I noticed the above attitude when reading in a PC mag the question .....why buy a 360 for X amount when you can have a system for 299 these days, a system which can surf the net , etc , etc.....
To an extent the 360's games can be experienced more or less on a PC, eg DOOM 4, and the EA franchises. Will the PS3 be the first system which will pull some of the PC gaming crowd in to the console world ?, i hope so. You may say 'who cares' but i almost look up to serious PC gamers who have spent thousands to get the best system as better critics of games than say the casual console crowd, and if 'they' are pulled in then finally that snobbishness can be ended.....

Im a pc gamer and with the new consoles coming out there is absolutely little to no reason for me to pick up my mouse and keyboard these days (other than a few RTS titles). In time yes I could build a more powerful pc than either teh PS3 or the 360 but at what cost???? Also I may be old school but pc gaming is just no where near as enjoyable as console gaming (particularly with MS Live and Sony's exclusive titles).

I know what you mean. Every generation I buy less and less games for my PC. Right now the only games I still buy are RTS games and thats just because of the mouse and keyboard. I also have a few shooters on my PC, but lately all my favorite shooters seem to be being ported over to consoles with better graphics. If blizzard starts making their RTS games for consoles, I wont have a single game to buy for PC anymore. Some people can say PC gaming will never die, and maybe it wont, but it will become less popular with every generation.

More importantly, with the PS3 having standard support for mouse and keyboard there is even less reason. Choppy framerates? Fluctuating framerates? Large loadtimes and upgrade demands? These are things that PC will remain and I don't think there are many things left that they will keep over Consoles.
UT2k7 guaranteed to work on the PS3 with great framerates and Mouse and Keyboard support is exactly what I'm talking about. This will draw a LOT of people from the PC crowd and Sony will be definitely increase their slice in the total gaming sales. 360 doesn't have nearly the same effect on the PC crowd.

All this talk sounds like the "PC is dead" kind of threads i hear every year.I understand everyone has their preference but that is just it.I continue to play PC games way more than i do on my PS2 unless a killer game like MGS3 comes around.
On the PC side of things i download demos all the time and the online community for the mod makers are awesome.
Like i said everyone has their preference but the PC is still the one in my book.Like Danji Ikari said with the KB & mouse,i would be willing to actually consider a FPS now with that included.

PC games =RTS and FPS games. That's mostly it. And the occasional lionhead studios game.  3rd person shooters are fewer these days on pc.
I really don't see why they stick their noses down at console gamers.
The interface is more intuitive (except for their niche of fps games and rts *rolls eyes*) for every other game design out their. It's a dedicated thing for gaming. I prefer console gaming any day for these reasons:
1: Content is better (IMO)
2: Cheaper investment; spend 300 dollars every five years for the latest console technology or 500 dollars every 6 months for the latest pc technology. Hmmm..
3: Don't have to worry about 'system requirements'. The only requirement is that you have that system or console You're not gonna pop a ps2 or xbox game into their respective system only to find that your console doesn't have enough memory or some bullhonkey error message that your xbox or your ps2 or gamecube isn't up to snuff.
4: You can play multiplayer with friends in the same room on consoles far more easily than you can on a computer. You need multiple computers and a lan connection or some foolishness as opposed to one t.v. one console, and 2, 3, or 4 controllers. shazaam.
All those elitist P.C. gamers can take that weak mess somewhere else.

Well, I think there's a console honeymoon period. First two years of any console the graphics are just way better than whatever you have on your PC, as much due to production values as raw power.
Then after 2 years your PC starts looking good again...
I remember playing Smuggler's Run on PS2 and thinking "Woah, these graphics are way better than anything I have on my PC."
But PC snobbery will never die. Guys who don't have a car to mod gotta do something.

Haha, when they could buy a decent car with the money they spend on graphics cards. hahhaha.

Yeah, I used to be mod crazy, then you realize you're doing it all for 2 good games a year. This year, Civ 4 and FEAR.
Huge expenditure, very little return. So no SLIed 7800GTXes for me this year.

Shouldn't this be moved to the PC gaming forum.
A lot of people play games on PC because they already have it for different purposes and simply don't consider different options - coincidentally, most of these people never buy a game or any other thing in a disc in any shop. Also, there are some hopeless people who expect console exclusive games to get PC ports, even if it would be a pain to play with a keyboard and a mouse (how the hell would you efficiently execute Tekken combos?).
IMO, PC gaming will end up being destined to people who don't mind spending more and more money to have the edge of technology or for those who don't mind playing games at choppy framerates and/or low resolutions as long as they get commercial games for free, or even for those who don't mind playing games or watching movies in their PC monitors.
Hardcore PC gaming is suitable for people with lots of money to spend and for those who enjoy mostly FPS and/or RTS games. However, both hardcore and casual gamers who want to get fine experiences (installation ease, moderate money investment, best exclusive games, wide variety of genres) with videogames should go with consoles.

I tend to disagree, the 360 is scheduled to get the majority of high end titles coming out for the PC, but either way its a little to early for this statement.

Yeah I just spent $300 on a video card and $200 on a sound card >.> but will the ps3 double over as a recording studio like my computer? Not yet. So untill there is word of such a thing on ps3, or other system, my computer can still do things consoles can't
*cough Emulation of just about every console* sorry rev. Me loving retro games can't help but LOVE emulators and I am certain ps3 will have some crazy linux users who will create some and then I might have to kiss PC goodbye for good.
I think ppl enjoy upgrading computers like some ppl do cars. Is it REALLY worth spending $8000 for additional 300 horspower in a 300 horsepower car? (my brother thinks so) I think it's crazy, but then I've put over a thousand in my computer just so it'll play FEAR and the likes (thank God for Christmas {literaly} and Birthdays) or I couldn't afford this stuff.
*shrugs* most PC users will still be snobs but I am proud to say I am ready for change, CONSOLES, KICK SOME ASS FOR ONCE!!!!!

I agree with that, a lot of good games I've seen on Xbox were either ported from PC, or later ported to PC. It might not be the same this gen, but I doubt it.

I was a huge PC gamer from way back in the day. In fact, I still honestly perfer my PC over my 360. I only had the Atari 2600 and first 8-bit Nintendo consoles before I got heavy into PC gaming. It was not until my sophomore year in college (2000) that I bought the XBox, mostly to play games that are not released for the PC.
When a game is on multi-platforms, I tend to grab it for my PC. Mostly because I can play online for free, download content, and create or apply community mods. It just give me a little more tweak, which is something I like to do.
However, just think about the PC gaming section in your local Best Buy or other electronic store. Think about how small is become and how much larger the console gaming section is now. Impressive. I even found myself for the first time ever buying just as many, if not more XBox games than PC games this year.

Well you guys also haven't mentioned that getting into Lan parties because you have a PC is a great feeling, it's also about class. (Things like that still exist)
Personally I have my PC as a media center and workstation, but having the best shooters and tactical games really helps, for all the other genres I've got a Gamecube. And with the Revolution promising to have the best shooter's and new types of genres it's gonna be a tough call.
Oh, and you also learn alot by making a PC, skills that will actually help you not get ripped off when you buy a computer part. (And help you fix up the computer.)
