PS3 gets a greenlight!!! New consoles at next E3

The race to dominate Generation 5 heats up as Sony brings the PS3 forward and Microsoft and Nintendo go all quiet.

Despite claims that Sony had made a bit of a boo-boo and the development period of the CELL processor chip would over-shoot the PS3 by some margin, it appears that everything is right with the world once more. At a shareholder's meeting recently, SCE honcho Ken Kutaragi said that the initial period of development was complete and technical demos will be released within the fiscal year.

And that means the PS3 will be at E3 next May.

It also means that the third (or fourth, if you count the PSone. Make that fifth with the PSX. Or even sixth with the PSP), incarnation of the Sony PlayStation will be sitting in Japanese living rooms as early as late 2004/early 2005. Of course, the problem of manufacturing enough units for the US and Europe mean we'll have to wait a bit longer for a roll-out, but at least it'll be earlier than we were expecting.

As for the Xbox 2 (or more likely Xbox Next), there were reports that slightly scary Microsoft brass Steve Bullmer had announced a Japanese launch date of as late as 2006. Since then, retractions have claimed that that date should have been attributed to most Japanese technology analysts. Microsoft have made no comment about the stories, leading to predictable speculation that something funny's going on over at Redmond, WA.

Nintendo's N5 and Microsoft's Xbox Next will more than likely be pushed back again for a 2005 release, and have some kind of appearance at the 2004 E3, especially Nintendo, who has stated numerous times that they will be the first to launch a next generation console.

Sony just needs to be put back in their place, and it's been a long time coming. I now can only hope to see the BS3 suffer some delays. Nintendo needs to do whatever it takes to get their console out and fast rather than letting it fall back, even if it means giving up their right nuts and selling their souls to the devil.

I think that this time it is do or die for Nintendo. They have little to no margin for error this time around. Everyone accepted the Gamecube as a great comeback system. However, As a Nintendo loyalist, I dont think that Nintendo did everything that it could to make the Cube a great system. The N5 has a cool name and it better bring Spaceworld Link back if it is to retrieve all of the Zelda fans. Many accepted the cel shading as a great experiment, but they reall need the Legend of Zelda series if Nintendo is to come back. Theyve done a good job making Nintendo look like a adult system as well as kids system, but they need to do better. I think this may be Nintendo last shot to regain greatness.

It was not a slaughter in the 16 bit days, and those were the best years for video games in my opinion. Nintendo DID slaughter with the NES though...

The ps2 fans dont want graphics. They just got sucked in by the hype. And do you know someone who thinks bloodrayne is better then wind waker? Thats pretty messed up. They probably didnt even play wind waker, just judged the graphics.

i think nintendo shouldnt target its next system 4 every 1, but just teen, take a look at ps2, no 1's ashamed to own one, but i went to england one time, if u own a gamecube there you like a kid, an its like the "looser system" personally im not thinkin of buyin a system next generation, but if i do, it will only be one, and probly the ps3 or xbox next, or the next gameboy, nintendo is loosin my interest, no matter how awesome their games are, they're moves are stupid. I idnt say that it did. But the best way Nintendo could get their old fans back would be with a true Ocarina of Time type of Zelda game. I am hoping that the PS3 gets blown out by nintendo, and that the xbox next does well but not good enough.

The prices better not be way to high because i will want one as soon as i see them.

Wonder what would happen if another company comes in with a new machine that is not as expensive but way more power for the money.

I guese we can only wait and see.

I herd that panasonic may make a console that blows away the others.
