It's only a short presentation so I guess there won't be too much news there.. :?

IBM Microelectronics will precede the lunch break with a special 45-minute presentation about the new Cell microprocessor architecture. This is certain to be a high point of the conference, because no other processor announced this year has generated as much excitement in both the trade press and the mainstream press. Cell, of course, is the chip destined for Sony's next-generation PlayStation 3 home videogame console. However, IBM has much greater ambitions for Cell, which is based on IBM's Power architecture augmented by numerous on-chip coprocessors. (See MPR 2/14/05-01, "Cell Moves Into the Limelight," and MPR 1/3/05-01, "New Patent Reveals Cell Secrets.") This special presentation will be delivered by Jim Kahle, an IBM Fellow who helped lead the Sony-Toshiba-IBM (STI) design team in Austin, Texas.

The forum takes place May 16-19. So I guess it will drown in E3 info :)

Hey! Great find. :)

I don't know what they're talking about when they say IBM has greater ambitions, but hey sounds good to me. Are they talking beyond those two servers they're supposed to be releasing? I'll actually be a little dissapointed in Sony if they don't have 'greater ambitions' as well.

be careful not to get too carried away with the 'general' Cell. we want to focus on the PS3's version of Cell. by that, E3 is currently our best option. Cell will obviously have many different versions depending of the required applications and environments.

I could really be too optimist but i think PS3 will get the full thing while TVs will get a downgraded version(not many reasons for a TV to get such power...),workstations will get several CELL linked together and PC will get about the same of ps3 CELL,again i could be wrong...

I think the cell will be used to efficiently incorporate a DVR into the TV and perhaps more stuff. Like MS port as well as DVD burning.

I really hope IBM developers will start coding drivers for linux kernel, WHOA...

That'd certainly be enough to get me to switch to linux. Running a cell as the processor for any computer would be incredibly awesome. I doubt it'd cost much either considering they cost about $70 to manufacture (economies of scale rock).
