View Full Version : Perhaps Some PS2 Owners Could Help Me..
12-07-2002, 11:30 PM
I will be getting a PS2 for Christmas, and was wondering your views on the following games I was thinking about picking up in the near future. Consider the following things the most: Replay Value and gameplay.
Here are the ones I will be getting no matter what you say:
Virtua Fighter 4
Final Fantasy X
And here are the ones I am considering, which is why I need your help.
Sly Cooper and the Theivious Racconus
Jak and Daxter
Space Channel 5 Part 2
Suggestions are welcome, but just for reference I don't like shooters or the GTA series that much, so don't bother to mention them.
I enjoy RPG's, platformers and adventure games the most. I also like original games, with unique gameplay.
12-07-2002, 11:34 PM
Well,GunGrave, Suikoden III, Final Fantasy X, Ico, Jak and Daxter, and Onimusha.
Those are what I think you should get.
12-07-2002, 11:35 PM
I haven't played Sly coper yet so rent that or something.
12-07-2002, 11:37 PM
I forgot to add...
If any suggestions are made, tell me about the game, and why I should play it.
I'm too lazy to look up info about the game..
12-07-2002, 11:38 PM
And I'm too lazy to type.
12-07-2002, 11:39 PM
Then don't reply to my threads.
12-07-2002, 11:41 PM
I will try to get them to you.Erm some time today.

Here I looked up some things on gungrave and copied some text so here ya go:When it comes to dispensing justice with extreme prejudice, nothing beats a gun-wielding, death-dealing anti-hero. Gungrave for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system casts you in the role of Grave, a long-dead assassin sent to annihilate a mysterious criminal organization. The tools at your disposal: a gun in each hand and a coffin full of hardware strapped to your back. You'll lead Grave through huge environments ranging from the bowels of the criminal underworld to graceful towers stretching toward Heaven, all filled with relentless foes that will stop at nothing to bring you down. In these stages, there's no such thing as window dressing -- everything you see on the screen can be perforated with your firearms. Gungrave features an intuitive control system that lets you to perform a variety of graceful moves, and DVD-quality cutscenes by renowned anime artist Yasuhiro Naito. If you like full-tilt action with a healthy dose of anime-inspired mayhem, Gungrave will blow you away.
Huge stages filled with destructible environments, disposable enemies, and nightmarish bosses.
Devastating special attacks and high-powered weaponry give you the edge you need to survive.
Vanquish enemies with style to unlock more secret movies and attacks.
Dramatic movie-quality cutscenes showcase original animation from Yasuhiro Naito, creator of the hit series TRIGUN.
More than 70 3D virtual action figures to collect.
Oh yeah and here's the icon
Damnit,I'll redo the icon
12-07-2002, 11:52 PM
There ya go.
12-08-2002, 12:17 AM
Damnit I don't even get a thankyou.
12-08-2002, 02:26 AM
I make this big because I have thought time about it. Now, read on for a smaller size.
Gungrave is a revolutionary game by SEGA, which combines anime with shooting people up with an infinite number of bullets. why? because reloading is for pussies.
Now, Jak and Daxter is a nice rental. You'll beat it and never look at it again. For your FFX thoughts, only get it if your ready to take away your life for about ten hours, then get bored and play it off and on for about a month.
Sly Cooper is nice...but repetitive. Tony Hawk IV is a must have, though. Think about the PS2 controller. It is the original THPS series controller, and the game fits on it without question the best.
Suikoden III and Ico are both phenominal, and worth every cent of what you spend.
Though, don't bother with VF4. Get Tekken IV, or Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore. I like DOA2 better, mostly because it's fast, non stop fighting that takes a little to master, and you have fun in mulitplayer mode a whole lot more.
And be sure to pick up the PSone classics like NFL Gameday 98 (the best NFL game ever produced by anyone), Bushido Blade 2 (the best two player sword killing action you will ever find), and Final Fantasy VII, which revolutionized RPG's.
12-08-2002, 02:28 AM
DODGE the VIPER
12-08-2002, 02:47 AM
Jak and Daxter is definitely a rent only title. ;)
12-08-2002, 06:27 AM
Spatula: I already have DoA 2 for Dreamcast, so I'm not really intent on picking up Doa: Hardcore. I like the DoA series and all, but how much different is DoA 2 from Hardcore? Tekken 4 seems nice, but I like the Virtua Fighter series better, I think the VF series, is much more solid than Tekken. I will give Tekken 4 a rental. I choose Virtua Fighter 4 because it takes time to master, the the VF series isn't too friendly to button mashers.
I also don't like Tony Hawk, I should of said that from the start. My fault.
I plan on picking up some PSOne games like FF 7, Crono Cross, Star Ocean, Lunar Silver Star Story and a few other RPG's.
Also, any thoughts on Rachet and Clank?
12-08-2002, 12:36 PM
Ratchet and Clank is nice. Yea; get it if you want to be treated. Though it may also get a bit boring after a while.
Arc the Lad Trilogy, if you want it. It holds all of the Arc the Lad RPG games, but its makers kept pushing the release back. so i dont even know if its out.
and hardcore really doesnt have much different from the dc version worth bragging of.
thats a good number of games you have.

U like rpg's. Get kingdom hearts. Here is end part of the ign review.
Indeed, I found this entire game quite impressive. For something with a goofball camera like this to nevertheless remain a compelling action-RPG requires some substantial assets in other areas.
Kingdom Hearts assuredly has those assets. It's hard to properly express the coolness of this game's setting and presentation to someone who hasn't dove right into it. Donald Duck gets flattened by Yuffie the ninja slamming the door as Squall and Sora bash Heartless out of second-story windows -- thoroughly unlikely, yes, but doesn't it sound cool? Well, perhaps not to some, but if so, they're not geeky enough to be reading this, and are hence advised to go find some other website.
The game as a whole shows some loose ends hanging here and there, things like that Gummi Ship that just don't seem to justify their existence properly. Given the size of this project, though, the number of disparate elements needing to be crammed together, and the huge variety of cooks stirring the soup from both the Square and Disney sides, it's amazing that this has a single end sewn up tight, never mind that it turned into such an engaging adventure. If you like Square, or if you like Disney, or if you'd just like to check out an impressive action-RPG, Kingdom Hearts should be at the top of your list this fall.
-- David Smith
A simple story, an engaging cast, and enough character for a fistful of other games. Production values all around are top-notch, and the interface is versatile while remaining simple. 9.5
Strong designs and brilliant animation carry the day, even if the total level of detail isn't extremely high. 9.0
Yoko Shimomura's score pulls a disparate variety of influences together, and the voice acting is superb. 9.5
Compelling and effective, but not without some severe problems at the time. The camera still makes me dizzy... 7.0
The main quest is 25-30 hours with a modicum of side-questing. Completists will get a good 40 hours at least. 8.0
OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 9.0

Thanks, I forgot about Kingdom Hearts. I'll definatly give it a rental sometime.
12-09-2002, 01:41 AM
I would just rent Jak and Daxter... I didn't like it too much.
You should get Star Ocean 3 when it comes out, and you should try Kingdom Hearts. My friend has it, and he says it's awesome.
12-09-2002, 01:47 AM
Here is some shit on Onimusha (the first one), since that is the only one of those I own. It's pretty good, with good control and shit, nice battle system which is pretty easy to get down. Very good storyline, and the graphics are beautiful (pre-rendered). The only thing that gets me about this game is that it is too short, and there is really no reason to play it again after you beat it. It's kinda like RE (switch Zombies with Demons), except there is a whole lot more fighting than running. Oh, it has some nice puzzle scenes too.

Np, And if u like fighting games try Capcom vs. Snk 2.
12-09-2002, 02:43 AM
Yeah, I'm pretty big on fighters.
From what I've played on Onimusha, I've enjoyed. I did like the battle system, it was a decent game.
I will definatly get Star Ocean: Till The End of Time when it comes out. It looks great.
12-09-2002, 11:40 PM
Well, add Virtua Fighter 4 as the first game to the collection. Can't go wrong with a cheap "Player's Choice" title.
12-09-2002, 11:53 PM
um, jak and dexter is shit.....and i'm a big fan of the gt series.
12-11-2002, 07:59 PM
VF4 - it's a great fighter that is deep and hard to master yet very rewarding when you do. It's NOT a button-masher, so don't go in expecting to mash your way to vistory (a la Tekken), cause you'll only get your ass handed to you
FFX - Great RPG and it is very long as well, the story isn't the besy out there, but it gets the job done. Get it ONLY if your willing to invest 50hrs or mose minumum.
Onimusha - Good game but it is EXTREMELY short ... be warned, it will probably take you about 4 - 5 hrs to beat it first time through
Onimusha 2 - Great game and I thought that it was much better than the firs ... It is also A LOT longer (12 hrs or so first time through) plus their is great replay value.
Devil May Cry - I consider this game to be one of the BEST games on the PS2 and it is one of my Faves ... lots of action, amazing graphics (for the PS2) and it is very fun to play.
ICO - Good game ... I consider it to be a Puzzle / Adventure game. Be warned though taht you will probably want to kill that annoying, helpless loser of a girl you have to baby throughout the whole game.
Kingdom Hearts - Great game, very long as well. Don't be scared off by the "Disney" Locatations / Characters. It's actually a very good game and a must-have for any Square fan. Also ... be warned that it ain't no cake-walk ... it is a hard game, but if you level-up early on in the game (what I did) you shouldn't have any problems.
12-11-2002, 08:04 PM
I reccomend your games, and Id like to add Kingdom Hearts, Hitman 2, red Faction 2 is good some people say too. Entirely ur choice
12-11-2002, 09:46 PM
Don't get Hitman 2
The controls take out all of the fun in the game, storyline is okay, but controls partially spoil some games if they are extremely hard
12-11-2002, 09:50 PM
Well, I liked it. It took a great deal of skill to complete the objectives, especially against those 10 hitman clones
12-11-2002, 10:12 PM
Oh ... I forgot to put Twisted Metal Black ... that's a really fun game, plus it's a greatest hits title so it's cheap too.
12-12-2002, 01:51 AM
I already said I didn't like shooters, so I won't bother with RF 2. I'm not interested in Hitman 2 either.
About Twisted Metal Black, is it as good as the first ones, or is it as bad as the later Twisted Metals? Because I really liked the first 2.
12-12-2002, 03:18 AM
It supposed to be good as 2. Its really dark, as you should know, and from what I've played from the demo, it seems to kick ass.
12-13-2002, 08:07 PM
TM:B is really good ... it's not shit like the last 2 games *shudders*
If you liked the first 2 then you'll love this one ... plus it's got a really dark theme throughout it.
12-13-2002, 09:45 PM
www.ps2substance duh :)
12-13-2002, 11:39 PM
That's funny, I don't recall PS2Substance being a game...
You'll need that '.com' at the end too, chief.
12-14-2002, 01:13 AM
No,don't get twisted metal black. You'll get annoyed and die of bordem.
12-14-2002, 01:14 AM
No, no...I like it better just how it is.
12-14-2002, 04:33 AM
www.ps2substance.com i was trying to leave it off of a link but ther eyou go.. brian loves it :)
12-14-2002, 05:47 AM
Get Devil May Cry of course. :D
12-27-2002, 11:29 AM
your first list of games.
12-27-2002, 06:04 PM
I suppose I should say we did get a PS2 for Christmas along with GTA: VC (Not by choice), Kinetica, ATV Offroad Fury (Came with the PS2 Bundle) and Virtua Fighter 4.
I think I may go out and pick up Ratchet and Clank since it's decently priced at Radio Shack, I've heard nothing but good things about the game.
12-27-2002, 11:48 PM
If your looking for platformers then, don't forget about Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. I don't own a PS2, but I have heard many praise the game. Also, its a Greatest Hits title now as well.
12-28-2002, 06:48 AM
Well, I got Ratchet and Clank earlier today and it's a very good game so far. I can easily tell I'll really enjoy the game.
Link of Zelda
12-28-2002, 10:09 PM
All your games. Sly Cooper does repeat a lot but if you like celshading this game is good. Devil May Cry is my all time fave. Red faction2 hags good gameplay. plus rachet and clank is killer
