Samar7 just showed me this, and I have not read about this on any other website/forum or anything, so this is very nice news, and you read it on PSPinsider forum first thanks to Samars good eyes :P
Sony have not given out specs of what kind of region coding system they will use for the UMD movies (if it will be the same system DVD movies are using or if they'll use a new system). Well wonder no longer. If you look closely on the box-art, you can see a Globe with the number "2" for the Japanese system. This proves that they'll be using the regular DVD region system.
What does this mean for you?
Well, if you're from Europe and want to import it's GREAT news seeing as Europe are region 2 aswell, so it will be possible for you to buy a Japanese PSP and play European UMD movies on it!
If you're from USA it doesnt change anything, you won't be able to play American movies on your Japanese PSP.
Here's a picture of the boxart:

I'm a european. and confused. I'm still too apprehensive about importing, so I dunno if I will import. If i can't wait, then I will.

i'd rather wait and avoid problems - hey! Pro Evo has all its problems ironed out before it comes out but they dont do anything about it in winning eleven
And I don't want anything weird to happen like 2 years download the line I have to buy a new PSP because of region coding

Is that the generic dvd-region 2 symbol? I don't recognize it and wont bet on it until sony confirms.
If it is the case I would have to check if the Japanese Yen is so strong that it still might not be worth an import. Waiting might make it cheaper. And, mind you, Sweden has a 25% sales tax on electronics that I'd have to pay as the device crosses the border. I do have a friend in Japan that could buy one for me, but he won't be back until next summer probably.
For me it'll probably end up in an equation of money over time to wait. Right now Im pretty strapped for cash so it might have to be a while.

If you import from a import shop in a EU country then you won't have to pay any taxes or customs.

True... And if I find an import-shop in sweden I can easily even write the sales tax off on my company as "inspiration", effectively lowering the cost even more... The plot thickens... Anybody know a swedish import-shop?

I thought the DVD regions had a small box with the earth inside of it(the whole earth) and then the number of the region right in the middle? That has the earth off to the side and sutff. I dunno maybe they do it differently for Region 2 but on Region 1 DVDs they dont look like that.

That is correct. It seems that this isn't the same logo used for DVD's: http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/dvdregion/region2.gif
Although since the design is similar (a globe and a number) and the Japanese release is in region 2, it seems pretty evident that the region code numbers and areas will be the same.

Among the trademarks in the line-up in the bottom of the image there are two I dont recognize... The crossed dots and "XMB"... What are those?

the XMB is the psp interface and also the dotted lines have something to do obviously with XMB !!

I don't know why, but for some reason I find animated avatars annoying... There are examples of those who I think work though... They are usually a bit more conservative with the animation itself... Like the monkey shaking it's index-finger (isn't it from family guy?) whoever had that.

XMB (the crossed dots is a visual picture of "XMB") is the interface from which you control the PSP. You select if you want to play music, games, change settings or whatever from it.
