Wifi is not the same thing as a cell phone for instance it dosnt have the capability to contact other things out of a certain area wifi dosnt use satelites so there for psp will not be able to contact other poeple in other states....HOWEVER the psp will be able to connect to the internet in wifi enabled hot spots like the things in starbucks. sony did say that psp was basically a portable home system for use in houses that have wireless routers i think that u proably will be able to conect to another psp via lan but i dunt know that info yet

That's the idea. With Wi-Fi, you can do an Ad-hoc connection (just units talking to eachother directly, the PSP supports 16 in this mode), or you could do a connection via your router to other PSPs anywhere.

On top of that, wi-fi has a VERY short range compared to other wireless electronics. I believe the average distance is 300 feet (100M). Wi-Fi G has longer range, I believe, but is used less extensively.

Yeah its only 100M which is shame imagine if there were thousands around a w-fi point  :P

Can I add on a PCI wireless network card to my PC which runs a cable based LAN and then use PSP to connect into that? or my laptop?

Wi-Fi G does have a longer range, but is more expensive and you'd need a Wi-Fi G enabled access point but I think Wi-Fi works on Wi-Fi G A.P's anyway.

can a laptop with a wireless network card connect directly to a pc with a wireless network card without it going through the router?

I think so, but it might be tricky to get it working right with packet forwarding etc.

I have a hard enough time getting Windows Internet Connection Sharing to forward the packets for Trillian's file transfer.

Sony is developing a cell phone attachment for the psp, maybe they could use that to connect to other psp's for gaming purposes
