do you think its possible that you could use this AV Connection Cable (for PS one) on the PSP. i mean look at the connectors it use 3.5mm AV input/output mini-jacks, i suppose that you could plug that in the PSP headphone socket.
sorry i forgot to put down the link

weren't they talking about getting rid of the AV port on PSP

That would suck (If they get rid of the AV port, that is)

It is difficult to say whether or not they will forget about A/V output. It would be too easy for people to pirate the movies if the PSP has an A/V output on it. My guess is that they will not have the A/V cable for the PSP due to pirating problems.

Yeah i would guess at that too! It doesent really bother me but its better if its there and has a good use for it.

Chances are it will happen via third party accessories but I honestly think that Sony will stay away from A/V cables.

Yes i do aswell but only for piracy reasons if there were no risks they would have one but who knows?

Too bad, because it would be soo sweet if it did. Playing PSP games on the big screen. Nice
Not to mention watching the movies on the big screen. Oh man, piracy seems good, ya know, cheap movies and all, but it ruins everything. And anyway. I hate it.

the PSP has the best copyprotection i could imagine.
only sony can burn the UMD's and if this wasn't enough they also have software copy protection built in or so.
i don't see anyone pirating PSP games in the next years so why should they make region codes.

for even more protection, and so you cant import games from other countries and play them

Yeah, can't have people in Europe playing Animal Crossing. ;)
Yes, because Animal Crossing would corrupt the minds of Europeans, wouldn't it Nintendo?
Though I'm a Nintendo fan, that's one game I was annoyed they never released here.
Anyway, back to the discussion.....
Weren't they going to have the AV in/out port built into the headphones port, so that they could use that 3-plug system they use for their camcorders?

AC's actually due out here in September. Nintendo made one quiet press release to that effect before E3 and that's been it. Presumably they don't want their embarrasing climb-down to be too public.
About the av in/out thing... it's good in theory, but it's basically a headphone socket with an extra stripe. How would the PSP know it's got headphones plugged into it and not just a faulty video lead, and vice versa? :? I suppose they could put a mode switch in, though.
Actually, what sort of cable is that? Just the normal three phono connections (audio L, audio R, video)? That would work, wouldn't it, as you could use the two headphone audio things from inside the socket, and the video thing (which would just be bypassed when headphones are in as they'd lack that extra "stripe"). Composite video's naff, like, but it's better than nothing. :D

They released it here and all the seasons and everything are still American. The game was just converted to PAL that's it. No changes to the game at all.

Actually, it won't be a good idea to view PSP movies or play PSP games on a big screen. Why? Because the resolution of the PSP is too low. If you play it on a screen with higher resolution, you're gonna need to stretch the image, and it'll look less then pretty.
BTW: Why did they ban Animal Crossing from Europe anyways? What was in the game that deemed it "unworthy and corruptional"?

Firstly, no reason was given.
Then, they claimed that it wouldn't be released unless Doshin The Giant was successful (as a "test"). Which, in spite of PAL gamers rushing out to buy it in order to get AC released, it wasn't.
Then, they claimed that the game was so dependent on the e-Reader and cards (which also were never going to be released in Europe) that they couldn't release the game.
And so on.
Basically they had one of their most successful and innovative games in the past decade and decided it wasn't worth the effort of releasing it in the UK or translating it for the rest of Europe. They then had the cheek to go on their anti-importing rampage which basically demanded that all UK stores cease selling import games (including Animal Crossing, which was selling like hot cakes due to the Freeloader import boot-disk) or they would not recieve new Nintendo stock in future and would be taken to court.
Since then very few people have had any respect at all for Nintendo of Europe.

Well thats a good point seen as the screen is low res i dont thiink enlarging it so big would do a favours it would be very fuzzy and dstortedand the PSP screen is good enough to watch movies besides if you were to want to have a movie on a larger screen just get a DVD!

from what i read the reason they banned the game was that their were fire Hydrants in the game that resembled a "man's private" that danced when you got close to them.
(remember this is something i read)

i think that they would just remove the fire hydrants if it was stopping the game from release :?

Exactly, that's what so embarrasing about the whole thing. It basically says that all their excuses and posturing were just nonsense.
There definately wasn't a censorship issue.

Just because the screen is low res doesn't mean the outputted image will be. Take a look at digital cameras. The screen is low res, but if you put the image on a computer, it isn't just the picture from the screen stretched to the whole screen. It is the high-quality original image.
Developers won't spend a lot of time making high detail textures, because it will be primarily used on a small screen. But it won't be blurry, and it definately won't be the same image the screen is showing.
Also, about the A/V output cables, how is there more of a piracy risk in PSP av output than in the AV output of ANY dvd player?
And the cable itself with the headphone jack-type plug isn't just a good idea in theory, many camcorders use it, and the Archos Multimedia Jukebox uses it in exactly the same way that the PSP will (hopefully) use it.

if they really put the film's in DVD resolution (or close to) on the UMD's so you can watch it on your TV with good quality, many ppl will buy UMD instead of DVD because they can also watch it on the go.
i think UMD's will be about 1/3 cheaper than a DVD but a bit lesser quality.
and about games on the TV: did you ever play GBA games on the TV ?they have much less (!) resolution but still look good.
Sockatume
07-28-2004, 10:40 AM
I really doubt that movie UMDs will be wastefully encoded at full TV resolution and quality, simply because UMDs are considerably smaller than the dual-layer DVDs that most full-resolution movies come on these days (about 9GB). It would decrease battery life and gobble up storage space for no reason other than to give folk a more portable DVD player.

I rekon the quality of UMD movies will be pretty damn good. I mean, you can still fit reasonable quality movies onto a 700mb CD-R. UMD has more than 2.5x that. Depending on the amount of special features you want, thats some hella good quality for something primarily for use on a little screen. And don't forget, it won't be too expensive for manufacturers to make double disc sets, as UMD costs are very close to DVD.

I'm not sure there will be a lot of extras on UMDs anyway. Who honestly would watch 15-minute making-of documentaries on a train journey?
I'd much rather they just filled the whole UMD with good-quality PSP-resolution video and stereo sound. Sound is one of the first things to go downhill when compressing a movie and it annoys me no end.

technically wouldn't the PSP have a (buffer) so that the when connected to a Tv it would look good, so it would optimize to any TV like the Ps2 had.
correct me if im wrong.
