the other thread hit the wall, i'll recap and introduce a hot new memory solution.
UMD: no memory storage, like a umd burner
Memory stick: small, durable, effeciant, some sticks holds up to 2 gigs
come in different sizes: 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1G, 2G,
prices are droping, you can get a 512 for under $200 now i'm almost positive. though the Memory sticks that can hold a good amount of video (the 1G and up) will cost you $400+, prices should come down even more when PSP launches making them even more popular.
*USB 2.0 External Hard Drives:***
come in differnt storage sizes(though the sizes can get big)
a small 2.5G hard draive cost around $150 and up.
i have seen big storage hard drives for cheaper than i thought though they are about the size of a palm.
20Gigs = around $180
40Gigs = around $300
60Gigs = around $350
80Gigs = around $400
though big and somwhat bulky a 20Gig hard drive would be around my price range for memory storage for my PSP. ofcourse i would have a normal Memory stick(128MB) for music and game saves and some everyday uses. i could use my big hard drive for storing multiple movies, T.V shows, game clips, you know the big stuff. and also have more song lists that i can tap into.
it would be really REALLY awsome if I could dirctly move data from one unit(HDD) to another(Mem.Stk), aswell as having an online server that i could also save/download new stuff to.
and for me atleast having to plug in a HDD as big as my psp wouldn't be a huge problem because i know how much a 20+GIG HDD can hold.
but im not sure if you can use this with a PSP or view things stright from it.
but if you could the uses could be amazing.
oh and the Online server:
death jr. can tell you more about that.

my dad bought a 200 gig external hard drive (usb2.0) and he paid less than 250 bucks for it i think.

I think Sony should have updated and created a new high density memory card. With technology advancing the way it is they probably could have cut the size too. Also, it depends on the amount they are being brought right? It's not like people buy memory sticks everyday, so they need to make profit. With the high memory stick sails around the release of the PSP they will be able to create a major price drop.

memory stick prices have been droping for awile now.
a few months back a 1Gig stick was just in it's testing/release stages and it sold for like 1000 euros. now you can get them at under $400.
the 512MB (which i think will be the most widly used by the PSP release) will cost under $100 actually i think you can already get them under that,
here's my price predictions.
64MB $10
124MB $25
512MB $40
1Gig $80
2Gig $130
4Gig $350 (i think they'll be were the 1 Gigs are today)

I think that the prices will drop on memory sticks when the psp is realised just not that much.
64 megs for $10 ?!?!
Most people cant even find the 8 meg ps2 memory card for that price

If you could get 2 x 64megs for $10 each
Then why get a 128 for $25

because you can let it in your PSP and don't have to carry one stick with you and the other in the PSP.
a 512MB stick is also more expensive than 2x256MB
if you have 1 512MB stick you could maybe get one movie onto it in one part but with 2x256 you would have to split it.

true.
Game Saves and music would get annoying if you had lots of small sticks, like with PS1

PSP uses Memory Stick Pro Duo which is a standard on its own in the family of Memory Stick products.
The Pro Duo standard has the size of Duo Memory Stick modules and the Read/Write Speed capabilities of the Pro model, but for now it is capped in size at 512 MB.
Likely you will be able to use also Memory Stick Duo with MagicGate Technology, but you won't be able to play movies off it and record witha possible PSP USB Camera on to it as the Read/Write speed of the Duo model is low compared to the Pro Duo one.
512 MB for $119.84

256 MB for ~$62-64

128 MB for $39.88 ( very close to what you pay for 8 MB PlayStation 2 Memory Cards )

64 MB for $29.88

what is magic gate and do you think you need memory sticks with magic gate for the PSP cause they are mostly a bit more expensive than the one without it.

magic gate is just protection software

how many of you would pay for a large HDD you have to plug into the usb?? but the HDD would be larger than the psp.
it wouldn't make sensse if you didn't have a bag to put it in. but a guess students, and people who like cargo pants could do it.
it just seems alot more logical to spend $200 on a 20+GIG HDD than a maybe 1Gig card, even though its way smaller.

Yes it is a bit stupid when you could just buy a big memory card! and carrying all that around with you it would be a pain. :roll:

It all comes down to compression doesn't it. A DivX TV show can fit into 40meg no problem but what if it's a movie. A 256meg stick would fit 6 TV shows. Which is equavalent to about 2 movies (in time (3hours)).
Ok, I just thought of somethin while writing this. Where are the movies coming from in the first place. Is anyone expecting to leave there PSP on downloading TV shows or does everyone have a PSX to transfer stuff onto memory stick? IF your using a PSX then just buy 2 memorysticks or 1x 512MB. That way you can have space for shows and music and games. Then before you next go out, just change your shows using your PSX.
Now what will all those who don't fancy the price tag on the PSX? How is everyone else supposed to get the shows onto the stick?

The PSP has a USB port, wouldn't it act as the Memory Stick reader? You know, just plug the PSP into the PC when the memory stick's in.

i hope so too, but it seems too open ended for sony's liking. Illegal apps, OS hacks etc... I don't see it happening

Bear in mind that you'd have to carry around a mini-USB->Standard USB cable everywhere! While there's third-party software on PS2 which supports generic USB flash drives, I can't see Sony including such support on PSP.
PSP Donīt need USb2 link to atach to hard drives, having WIFI: Simply, put yourself near your hard drive with wi-fi and its own battery pack. it could be little like an IPOD, and stand down in your wallet.
PD. and also, playing ALL type of content. PSP couldnīt be the XXI century walkman if itīs banned itself on playing mp3/divx/ogg/whatever the thing, yet another one would do it.

I'm not sure I want to have to pay for a Wi-Fi portable hard drive. It's not exactly Bluetooth, you know.

More people have USB ports on their PC's than WiFi. I expect the PSP could so the same thing as the N-Gage. When you plug in the PSP to your PC through a USB cable, the Memory Stick will appear as another drive on My Computer, or whatever your OS says.
