First of, no bashing DS or any other systems. I just wonder how will Sony fare against Nintendo. After all, they are the handheld kings, considering their reputation for eating up all of their past competitors(which all have better hardware) Personally I don't expect Sony to win the market, but they should at least do very well.
However, there are quite a few potential problems with the PSP. The battery life hasn't been officially announced yet, and as of now, doesn't look too good. Developers don't seem very satisfied with the PSP, how will it fare?

Weird, i thought i was gonna read something i know, or at least something that hasn't already been talked about. Looks like a dud first post. Anyway, here's my thoughts.
Battery life should be solved by third party or official extra battery packs. Whether or not Nintendo are the handheld kings has no revelance, look at what happened to the "king of the consoles" when the original playstation launched.
The DS looks like an original innovation, but i think it will lack the developer support of all its features, and ultimately fail as nothing more than a gimmik.
Now if SONY can get their final dev kits around to developers, everything should be sweet

If they can avoid any of the Japanese PSX style problems then it'll do quite well. As for competing with Nintendo, they have a great record with protable games systems where Sony are entering the market with a all in one devoce.
They should sell well, but we'll have to wait and see ;)

What problems did the PSX have?

They rushed it out, left out various recordable disc formats (which resulted in upgrade downloads) and basically people got confused.

Handheld companies didnt Stand against Nintendo because they had less investment in the gaming business so nintendo dominated them.Dont think the same with SONY PSP.

Ok this is what i think is going to happen
Sony enter the market make a big loss to start with due to start up costs and big production costs which is normal for any business when there new to a market which they are to the handheld one.
Sony will after i would say maybe a year and a half start to make money as long as they can get the right devs and compaines involved and they can pull off the wifi and multiplayer capabilites for the psp.
Sony i think will be sucessful but its not going to happen over night more like 2-3 years and i think afer that time they will be still no where near Nintendo interms of market share but i do think this as u would expect will do very well in japan.
I think Nintendo though could lose out in sales in America and the EU market though as im afraid alot of these areas will be sold to the psp purely due to the new Nintendo's system looking very childish and imo not that great compared to the PSP but im sure it will do just as well if not better in japan etc
Though we're talking about a handheld here, I think that the popularity of both the PS1 and 2 will have a bearing on the PSP.
As slayerx said, they probably won't break even for about a year or so. It always happens, but they'll find ways of reducing the production costs. Hopefully they won't simply port PS2 games to the PSP, and release some original titles. Of course, we've seen a lot of new titles for the PSP, I just hope that they can carry on in that respect.
If all goes well, then I think that PSP will do pretty well. They won't be able to completely take over the handheld market though. Nintendo have too much of a hold on the market, and I can't see them giving it up easily.

Yes but it may have an affect on PSP sales because the PS1 and 2 were popular but nintendos handhelds have always been good sellers so they may have an affect too.

I think that the DS and PSP will be pretty near in sales but with nintendo a tiny bit ahead because of their previous experience with handhelds and most GBA owners buying one.

Well, Sony came in and took lead in the console market, I don't see any reason why they couldn't do it in the portable market.
Then again, its probobly going to come down to area in the end. The PSP will easily dominate the NA market but the DS will have a easier time in the Asian market I think.

Sony has made lots of handhelds before actually, just not handheld gaming systems.

That's why I think that they were be sort of even. Both companies are popular in their own ways.

The question is, will people who own a GBA buy a DS, seeing as the GBA has still got a lot of time left.

The reason the GameBoy has become such a popular handheld is because it's been the only decent one around for the last 15 years. Other competitors have just fallen by the wayside.

Except for Sega. Sega had a great handheld but home console problems lead to a loss in revenues for Sega so IMO they just had to drop the handhelds and focus on recovering in the home console market. GameGear had alot of good games, some that where better than games on the Gameboy and I think that at one point in time it sold more but what made it fail was Sega's money problems. I cannot remember alot from that time but I feel that it was much better than the GB and GBC.

I agree, the game gear's system was the geatest portable console in that time. The games are excellent (colored, good story, excellent graphics, good sound, and best of all, it has a comfortable button interface.
I just hope PSP will not fail to give us (customers) the satisfaction we truly deserve.

Fair enough, the GameGear was good, but it just didn't stick around, which somehow the GameBoy has managed to do.
