if the games are regionally coded then a American game wont play on a Japanese PSP but if its not then it will. it just depends on what Sony decide to do. so i wouldn’t pre order a Japanese PSP just yet

It WILL most likely be region coded... just like DVD (although there's plenty of DVD players out there that'll play every region). I wouldn't import a Jap PSP and hope that it'll play American PSP games. Although importing a Jap PSP would ensure that in the future, if there are any PSP games that are exclusive to Jap PSP, you can import that and play it on your Jap PSP. But doing this would force you to get two version of PSP to play both region games.

Modchip for PSP....
Anyway im only getting the PSP.
just to let you people know Sony PSP is going to use the new media disk called UMD (universal media disk) KEY WORD UNIVERSAL
so it should be able to play anygame from any region

Doesn't universal just mean that it's used for any media type (video, music, game)? Same as a DVD or a CD then?

Exactly. Movie studios would never allow movies to be released without region coding. Likewise, the XBox was originally going to be region-free by default, but massive pressure from games publishers forced them to include locking.

Oh i hate region locked consoles. But it prevents piracy.
Sockatume

Nonsense- they could easily include anti-piracy but leave out the region-locking.

Yeah i dont think it should be region locked i want a psp maybe earlier than PAL get them so its probably going to be a jap.
i also think they should leave out region coding cause i was thinking of getting a jap one but im gunna have to wait till there is more info the UMD
they would probably make more money if people from other countries buy games that are from the US and vice versa

are those prices definite? 49 dollars per game is a bit steep..?

Well, not really, over here a PS2 game is the equivalent of $75. Most gamers with the means and the knowledge just import US games as a result... so if a platform launched without region coding, they'd have to either:
A) Drastically increase US games prices
or
B) Drastically drop UK games prices.
Otherwise nobody would bother buying the UK versions.
And frankly, I can't see A) or B) happening, so region coding will probably be in place.
Regarding game prices, Chris "Edge Interview" Deering stated that they'd be in line with current PS2 game prices, so yeah, $49 seems a bit high.
There WON'T be any region coding on games. That is current Sony policy which is stated in public press releases and within internal developer memos, and I have no reason to believe they'll change it. But there will be region coding on films - there is no doubt. I'm not sure about music videos, but I'de guess music would be region free also.

Well, I'd not seen any mention in the press releases that it would be region-free, but if developers are being allowed to release region-free games, then that's great! :D
Can't remember where I'de seen it publicly, just trawled links. But I've cast iron info from someone that there won't be region coding on game applications. The developer relations are still split between SCEA, SCEI and SCEE - so all games released in one territory may NOT be released in another without the relevent approval, but the games you'll be able to import and run okay.

That's a really good solution, far better than, say, going to the trouble of converting and localising something for other territories. which might only sell a few copies there.

Not really Thats about £30 and thats what UK ppl are prepared to pay for handheld games it is normal high prices over here.

It's steep for a game in the US (PS2 titles sell for $40). Remember, as far as games companies are concerned, the exchange rate is $1=£1.

According to someone at a gamestore, who was at E3 and was shown the PSP, games ARE going to be region coded. So it looks like us Aussies will have to wait months for PSP games that come out in America to be released here.

i remeber on the pspisider front page a long time ago that it was announced that the PSP will not me region controled therefore you can buy a PSP in japan and buy the USA games and play them in the Jap PSP. and another reason they are not region coded is because SONY is making all the games so why would they waste time and money on region locking the games instead of just throwing them out there and letting us play them.

They said there would be no region coding for games but the umd movie makers would probably still region code movies.
