Sony chairman Nonuyuki Idei has recently let slip all kinds of information about the forth coming Playstation 3 and how it might fit in with the rest of the Playstation family amd other Sony products, including TVs and the new PSP.

According to recent comments Idei-san has made, Playstation 3 should hit shelves sometime in March of 2006, the Playstation Portable unit might be incorporated as some kind of controller or remote, and sit down for this one - Sony is apparently toying with the idea of not only a PSX type high end version, but also placing "cell" processors into its TV sets to give consumers builtin access to games (PS2 obviously), movies, music, and the internet (imagine a PSX built right into your TV). Apparently in this TV application a PSP could be used not only as a controller for the PS3 elements of the set, but also as a remote for the TV.

Its pretty cool, a touch screen program turns your PSP into a remote control, would be fun watching another channel on the PSP too.

tv remotes use IR ports to transmit, PSP has one too.

The PSP wouldn't be turned into a touch screen via a program - you have to have a touch screen to begin with for that (PSP Version 2.0???). If something like this would happen, it would most likely be a menu based system where you navigate usign the analog controler and select using one of the buttons. Also, the other buttons could be hotlinked to other commands. It would make for the coolest remote controller ever!

Most mobile devices use low power IR transmitters for local connection within a metre with other mobile devices. But I'de like to think I could use the wifi capability of the PSP to browse my local home network machines, and say select mp3s to play on my home sound system via a web page running on my server.

PSP as remote control?? wouldnt it be stupid to charge your PSP once/twice in 2-3 days each time?

no thanks, i will use the real remote control with buttons that require two aa battery every 3-6 months lol

Well it wouldnt use the same amount of batteries as playing a Game or DVD and since its going to be sitting around near the TV most of the time you could just mount it on a charging unit.

I'm not sure it would work as a PS3 controller. On the GC compatible games the GBA is great cause of the odd GC controller. Since Sony controllers are the best ,it wouldn't make much sense to use the PSP, espicially with how much you use both anolog stick and the extra shoulder buttons for PS games.

What about a situation where you have the full blown high-end PS3 which serves as a home media server. Then, instead of having to go back to the PS3 everytime you want to change MP3s, you can just use your PSP as a remote to manage playlists, volume, fx. I could see this setup being a DJ's second best tool next to a nice set of tables.

The PSP wouldn't be turned into a touch screen via a program - you have to have a touch screen to begin with for that (PSP Version 2.0???).
You could probably have a seperate "transparent" screen which covers the main screen which could be touch sensative.
