View Full Version : Why I'm going to mod the hell out of my PSP

ATRAC sucks, and just incase I can't run code off my MemoryStick, I wanna make sure something with the power of the PSP will run any app I want, including emulators of old SNES and maybe even N64 games. I imagine Sony will also lock down what video formats I can playback, not to mention all that annoying DRM that prevents me fair use of what I already own.

The PSP could be the walkman of the 21st century, but not if its locked down to everything Sony. If it was opened up it'll become alot more popular.

ATRAC doesn't suck! I pretty much only listen to MDs which is ATRAC3. I think It sounds better than CD. Probably one of the reasons the UMD uses ATRAC is because it's basically an MD that's a little smaller but does data aswell.

In my opinion ATRAC does indeed suck. MD is about to die even with the new HD-MD. And here is another recent opinion as well:

The only reason MDs use ATRAC is because that's all sony want them to use. If someone really wanted to, i'm sure they could make a mod for a md to play mp3.

Anyway, UMD doesn't neccessarily use ATRAC... You will store your music on the memory stick. Are you aware that UMDs are nothing like an MD in that they cannot be rewrited, and you cannot burn them from home?

MD was introduced in 91 or 92. It's lasted 12 or 13 years, so why would it die now?

dude did you ever bought a game ?
or anyone that's yelling about "why can't i burn movies or music on the umd" or "i'm not gonna buy 2 movies"..
So freeking don't!
if sony did let umd burners in the market what do you think will happen ?
Illegal games, movies, music ....
don't say you don't get illegal games or music because you and the other guys are saying "please let me copy my old movie to umd so i can play it for free"...
Don't think sony is stupid you know..
if this really was a problem.. they would have just used a smaller dvd disc...

just cut the crap and for once BUY YOUR STUFF LEGAL !

you know how much money i lost for games...
ps2 games= approx 600,-
xbox games= approx 200,-

that's 800,- more then you(i don't mean you but the guys who don't buy it)
guys pay for your games..
and i have 500% more fun because i'm not gonna download tons of movies, games and music and not play with them....

i'm not saying that you download your games at ****.*** but the thing that some poeple ask is rubbish..

Ive spent quite a bit on my PS2 and im about to buy another one because the HDD wont work on a modded PS2 but its cool the more money I give them now the better PS2 they can give me.

Ive ripped off Sony quite a bit but im going straight from now till the end of the PS2's life.

With MS, well I have a Xbox with 100 games on the HDD and im about to buy another one with another 100 games, all copies so I must have cost MS about 8000 pound

I have never experience the sound quality of ATRAC.. But if it is the same as a CD it would be fine i dont think the ear could hear much better than 1000kb even though it is no where near that it is still very good.

As for MD dying, try the link below:
http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/sonys_new_1gb_mini_disc.php

And in other links i've heard its dying as well, but mainly in North America where we have a clear shortage of MD players.

And I'm not even sure what that rant was back there, about using legal stuff and all. If I own a movie on DVD, I believe its my right to have that movie available to play off my computer, backup DVD-R, flash memory, and yes even UMD without having to buy it twice. No Sony won't let any official UMD durners on the market right away, but technologically its very possible to construct such a burner and sell it. Just because its not licensed from Sony doesn't mean it won't work.

When you kiddies grow up, get a job and don't have mom and dad to pay for all your shit maybe you'll realize that blowing money buying 3 different formats of the same movie isn't economical. Its what the movie and record industries want, but if you have any education at all you'll realize these industries have done alot of shady things to get your dollar(at least in the US). Its the greedy corporations that don't allow me fair use of products I already own.

But its not a perfect world but I choose to fight the system. Enjoy wasting your money.

Yes if they are at a record high they will mean dying in another way i do not have 1 but seen as they are at a high i might have to get one if lots of people get 1..

Littlewoods have started selling bigger pack MD's lately too, maybe they mean UMD will take over MD or something.

Anyway for all the emulation fans nobody has worked out to this day why Sony were eager to find emulation experts last year, heres the article, raises an eyebrow :?

Yes UMD will most likely take over MD, why? Because UMD also stands for Undo MD...get it?Yea ok, anyway...

right....

anyway, i really hope sony lets us burn our own re-writable umds in the future. Now THAT would really make it the walkman of the 21st century...

Theyll probably release UMD burners that can only record certain kinds of files onto UMD so you can copy music but not movies and games.

Yeah....Cause that wouldn't get hacked. I think sony is of the opinion that if you want to watch movies, then buy the umd movies. What I do think will happen though, is hong kong silvers. I bet someone will make a case like sony's that will open and close so you can switch discs. Then someone will make pressed silvers of those discs. Who knows...maybe umds are just mini dvds in cases.

Yeah sure theyll risk being sued by the biggest electronics giant on the entire planet to put out a couple oif useless UMD burners that no shop will stock

I don't get you there.
HK silvers are pressed games. You can buy them over the internet. The machines used to press the games are huge and almost impossible to buy.

Yeah thats what they tried to do with GC games but they couldnt, theyr hard to get hold of too like you said so its not like theyll be hitting the shelves soon, maybe a few hunded people would be able to play copies if it ever happened.

Very true. Gamecube uses a very wierd format. But I also think that cracking the cube was no ones priority. Whenever anyone brought it up it was struck down because it's a kiddie console.
I still think a buffer hack via the memcard is gonna happen first.

A LAN system is how its done right now.

You have an encoded ID disc in the console and a DVD with the game on it in the PC, when the ID and game match it boots up through the LAN and plays the game, its a pain in the ass to set up and GOOD LUCK finding an ID disc.
