The backgrounds are the most noticeable improvement, to tell the truth, I have AC4 and didn't think they could take the graphics any further!

Check out the official English site (http://acecombat5.namco.com/). It sure reminds me of the old Top Gun (NES). Specially the sound and the fly by.
- the player will fight in formations of 4 aircraft
- this time, your allies will fight along side you in consort planes
- radio communication will feature heavily
I smell online co-op mode with voice communication. And yes, the graphics looks great...but then again, so as AC4.

I'm pretty excited about this game - I've been waiting for new info for a while. Since the game has been in development for about two years, I have pretty high expectations. About a year back, we heard that Namco was expanding their staff for the Tekken and Ace Combat series, (For graphical purposes.) and it looks like everything paid off. Those screen shots are awesome - the game probably won't surpass Gran Turismo 4, but it will definitely be one of the PS2's better looking titles. Hopefully, it will have some nice Online features, as well.

The "Hori Fightstick 2" - You know you want to play Ace Combat with this thing.

I have a 3rd party flgiht stick (I can't afford to import the official AC4 stick), and it's a nice experience, but I'm way better with the DS2. The Hori Fightstick 2 indeed looks great, but I would probably spend my peripheral money on GT4's official wheel.

Thanks for the warning - The PS2-IGN article says it will probably be about $100 US if (If!) it's released over here. Therefore, like the article said, it's hardly an "impulse buy" and should be avoided if you're not really into this sort of thing. (I guess it's more for the "I wish I could fly" crowd.) Anyway, I agree - a driving wheel would be much more worth while, due to the larger number of racing games available.

wouldnt you think they would sell those things at the smae price or a little more then that of a PS2 controller? whats the incentive to buy it if its so much?

Looking good even though just a slight improvement visuals wise over the still impressive Ace Combat 4. Enjoyed playing Ace Combat 4 but have had great difficulty finding a copy since borrowing it from a friend. As I have no flight games in my collection I'll make sure I add this.

Ace Combat 5 (Working Title)
Press Release
April 2004, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Namco are pleased to announce the latest instalment of the highly successful Ace Combat series, Ace Combat 5 (Working Title), which will launch exclusively in Quarter One 2005 for the PlayStation2. Ace Combat 5 goes a step beyond traditional flight-based shooters by incorporating ultra-realistic and beautifully rendered in-game graphics and cinematics with realistic weather effects, dynamic lighting and unparalleled game play.
It is 23 September 2010, and on a small island in the ocean that divides the global superpowers of Osea and Yuktobania, an entire military base is on red alert. Early today, the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron was scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft, but the entire squadron was ruthlessly decimated. As a fighter pilot in a newly formed squadron, you are called into action to protect the nation of Osea. As you take to the skies, the story begins to unfold…
Ace Combat 5 features a multitude of gameplay modes and offers players the opportunity to fly some of the most advanced aircraft ever built with over 50 licensed, playable planes. Taking the controls of these aircraft, players will be pushed to the limits, diving down canyons, flying through mountain passes and bursting above the clouds as they avoid missiles and hunt the enemy.
One of the exciting new features in the game is Wingman Command, which allows players to provide in-flight instructions to their squadron while carrying out group attacks. Additionally, radio communication with the squadron gives players the ability to listen-in on conversations, adding to the realism and intensity of battles.
On top of the action, Ace Combat 5’s engaging storyline is revealed through a series of high quality, in-depth cut scenes and several hours of spoken dialogue. The game unfolds over 30 wide ranging missions, with campaigns ranging from high altitude pursuits, air-to-ground combat and aerial dogfights to produce the ultimate in high flying entertainment.

It's a video game, who cares if some tiny missiles (which you rarely see close up anyway) aren't perfectly rounded to your satisfaction.

Unfortunately, the game has been postponed to the first quarter of 2005, according to PS2-IGN (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/504/504181p1.html?fromint=1). Namco will definitely have to deal with added pressure from fans. After all, Shattered Skies came out back in November, 2001. Therefore, since the game won't be out for another year, expectations for "The Unsung War" will be extremely high.

There is nothing wrong with the controllers for AC4 etc.
I can'yt wait for AC5 - now I just have to wait for it to come out on pre-order and then I won't have to worry about it anymore. 8)

Yup, 100 screens, basically all the ones released.
Looks amazing, especially considering since this game isnt using the PS2's full potential..
I think that may be BS but then again I said the same when they said AC4 wasnt using the full potential of PS2 so ill keep my mouth shut this time around :P
They said that GT3 was using the PS2's full potential, and look at GT4. So you never know really. The developers just keep on finding new ways to extend the quality of what they're producing, which is always a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
NickSCFC
06-13-2004, 03:44 PM
But GT4 doesn't neccersarily have better graphics, it just has better background design. Some of the tracks in GT3 looked a little rushed in terms of background design.]
Playing the same track on GT3 and GT4, it looks the same, the new tracks on GT4 are the most impressive looking.
True, but they've still added extra detail into everything, which is still an improvement on what they thought was the maximum potential of the PS2.
Makaveli_786
06-13-2004, 04:12 PM
Theyve never fully used the potential of the VRAM on the PS2.
It has 32 MB, the first games on the PS2 only used 4 MB, GT3 used about 16 and GT4 still used like 24.
Its a buffer so you can choose how much memory you want to use.
NickSCFC
06-13-2004, 04:36 PM
Hardly any developers use PS2's potential, aprt from MGS2/3, GT3/4 and VF4 Evolution, no game really seems to push the PS2.
Makaveli_786
06-13-2004, 04:55 PM
Not yet, they want the graphics to grow better so people keep getting dazzled by PS2 and keep buying PS2's.
You know the amount of PS2's sold in Japan took a surge after they saw the graphics on GT4, same thing is going to happen with future games, everytime people see how spectacular the graphics are they buy more PS2's.
The last generation PS2 consoles will be pretty amazing though, way better then AC5 and GT4.

i just don't hope they take it this slow with the Ps3. They only pulled it off with the Ps2 because they had a year head-start on other consoles. If it will come out a year later than the nextBox and/or Revolution and it's gonna be hard to optimize the ps3 they are gonna have a hard time.

Judging from the specs and rumors now first-gen PS3 games will be better than last-gen XBox Next games.
As far as the games are concerned, the specs don't really mean a lot. Sure, you can harness more power with a more powerful machine, but it all depends on what the developers make of it.

And ofcourse the developers need to make it on the console and specs are important. Did you remember the Beyond Good And Evil interview a while back saying they were sorry they couldn't make the dreamgame they wanted on current-gen consoles so specs DO really mather for developers to make the games.
I realise that they do matter, I just don't think that better specs = better games.

No but Better Specs COULD make better games.
Of course, just a shame that it isn't.

Lets compare GT4 to a XBox game..
PS2 is only twice as powerful as the XBox..
If the PS3 is 5 times more powerful than the XBox Next then can you imagine the difference?
Twice as powerful, in what way. Looking at the specs, the Xbox is the more powerful one.

The PS2 has 6.2 gigaflops while the Xbox has 2.93 gigaflops..
The PS2 has a 48GB/s memory bandwidth while the Xbox has 3.2GB/s
The PS2 has a 2.4 billion pixel fillrate while the XBox has a 1 billion pixel fillrate
The PS2 can render 75 million polygons while the Xbox is kicking around 31 million
************************************************** ***********
Gigaflops is important because its he RAW power a processor has, the more raw power a processor has the faster and more powerful and better graphics.
Memory is important because it transfers data, the bigger the bandwidth the more data can be transferred, more complexed games have bigger amounts of data so the PS2 can run more advanced games.
Pixels are the smallest part of a picture which can hold its own colour, the more pixels the better the picture looks, its that simple.
Polygons are like the building blocks of a picture, the more blocks you have the more in depth and detailed graphics you can render.
Source?
Look, to be honest, hardware is something that completely baffles me at the moment.

There is no source, this is the information MS hid when they announced the Xbox, I promise you youll never hear how many gigaflops the XBox has on any gaming site in affiliation with MS.
Heres a full explanation of the truth about XBox and the PS2 100% uncut..
This is the info they hid and never wanted you to see so dont expect to see it on a MS website...

I suppose that they've done that because Intel seem to be very secretive with the details about what kind of power their chips are doing.

They actually hid what Nvidia said too..
Intel arent open about gigaflops because theyr processors are substantially weaker than AMD's processors, thats why they always talk about clockspeed, clockspeed doesnt matter though so its a clever way of looking like theyr increasing performance when theyr not.
The two funniest comments were when they said the Xbox was kicking 80 gigaflops which is as much as a cray supercomputer and the Xbox was kicking 4000 million pixels which is a few times more than an X800 XT.

Intel lies about the GFlops in it's CPU (they hide it)
NVidia lies about the GFlops in their GPU (they count too much)
Together they form: The wonder called the X-box
Can kick 80GFlops
Capable of rendering 4000m pixels
Get yours today!
Lol, PWNED! :)
I can't see why they just can't be honest, especially as most people know that they're hiding everything anyway.

Man it is just beyond me how people can actually think the Xbox is kicking 4000 million pixels, man come on, that would be a few times more then a 10 thousand pound workstation
Ahh well, one born every minute I guess.....

The thing is they admit the CPU of the Ps2 is more powerfull, but than they automaticly bring up their BS'ed GPU.
And now we've got the marvellous XNA.

Man im telling you all the MS fanboys will point out the 80 gigaflops and 4000 megapixels, MS must be playing some mind games with these geniuses(or jackasses).
XNA is a good idea, it has a lot of potential but there are a few flaws like no plans for good hardware to back it up and the fact that it accounts for 80% of the source code, even sequels of games dont have that much, more like 10-20 percent.
That's going to piss off the developers I think, though they seem to be trying to alienate the developers as much as they can at the moment anyway.
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:06 PM
MS have some great ideas but no matter what they do they always mess it up.
How do they expect developers to fully co-operate with that amount of source code being controlled by XNA eh? Surely every game will just look exactly the same in the end?
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:39 PM
Man maybe they meant to say 8%, 80% is insane :?
I sure hope that they meant 8%.
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:51 PM
Yeah 8% is more realistic, they cant possibly mean 80%.
Though one of the other articles I saw a while back said 60%.
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:54 PM
LOL, man thats crazy :?
They shouldnt even make more than 1% of the code default, that means 1% of that game is going to be the same, even that is too much.
So 60% is going to be crazy. Everything will be horribly shiny like Halo 2 and the XNA video demos. Ugh.....
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:56 PM
LOL, when I saw the XNA movies right away I knew they were crap, they use shiny surfaces to cover up bad textures and take attention away from other bad textures.
solidus
06-14-2004, 04:58 PM
The car crash demo was WAY to shiny and the textures weren't that good neither. Some spectacular small pieces flying around and everyone's impressed
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 04:59 PM
LOL, they covered the bad textures with shiny surfaces and aimed everything at the physics engine.
You can easily do that with the PS2 right now.
