Take-Two recently held its quarterly earnings conference call to give some details on the status of the company as well as some of the games in its lineup that will be published under the company’s various labels, including Rockstar, Gathering of Developers, and Gotham Games. Perhaps the most interesting news to come out of the conference call came when Take-Two CEO Jeff Lapin said Rockstar will be releasing “a significant Xbox [game] “in Q1 2004. When asked if this was a Grand Theft Auto game, Lapin simply stated that the company would not comment on that yet. However, later in the conference Lapin said that the previous exclusivity deal between Rockstar and Sony would not allow any Grand Theft Auto games to appear on any other platforms, but that deal has since been amended.

Lapin went onto say that there are around 90 projects in the planning stages or currently being developed at Take-Two Interactive with 25 of those games being published under the Rockstar label, 40 under the Gathering of Developers label, and 25 under the Gotham Games label--one or more of the games in development under the Gathering label will utilize the Halo engine. The next Grand Theft Auto game was mentioned during the conference. It will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 in the back half of 2004.

As for Duke Nukem Forever, the game will not make it out this year. “We wrote it down last quarter substantially, so we’ve generally already pulled the plug,” said Lapin. “Take-Two is hopeful that the team in Dallas will finish the project.”

You would buy ANYTHING in FP as long as it was on Xbox.

That's what I plan to do with my free game when I buy a GCN, yes.

That's a mistake. Animal Crossing is good about seven choice days of the year, those being our holidays and some built-in ones. The game otherwise is Messenger For Animals.

Agreed. If you have no friends Phantagram (which is probably true), you'll tire of the game after you pay all your house off and crap.

Mmm, specumalation...

If they wanna go 'significant', they'll do a nice GTA:Online project for xbox and PC...
If they wanna do 'muh, again'... they'll port GTA3 or VC to xbox...
If they wanna do 'OOoOOO, that's kinda neet', they'll make GTA3 and/or VC online for xbox...

I could go on alllll day...
I'm glad they ain't rushin the new GTA for PS2... they might actually make an improvment with it this time!
For the time being however, GTA3 is still the best game in the series... I've realized now that VC for PS2 blew ass... It's not bad for PC, because the graphical style is very much like GTA3, and i like it... but like... GTA3 in almost every aspect beat the crap out of VC...
Even the supposedly 'bad' parts of GTA3 were better than VC...
Bad car physics in GTA3 made for awesome stunts, while improved physics in VC made for almost non-exsistant stunts.
Bad textures in GTA3 created a smooth clean graphical style, dank and disturbing while the 'improved' graphics in VC just made everything look fuzzy and blocky.
And even though the GTA3 island setup looks like a kids fridge drawing, it was WAY better organized and the more distinctive places made it easier to navigate...
GTA3 rules...
I'm glad i'm buying an xbox...

About GTA coming to other systems, you'll notice that:

- The article said that Take-Two has "amended" its contract with Sony - or in other words, made it better
- Sony said that the next GTA would debuet exclusively on the PS2 - just as Splinter Cell, Dead to Rights, and Indiana Jones have on the Xbox

But seriously, if it's a GTA game (besides an online one) and isn't $29.99 or below, I won't get it for awhile (if at all)

May 29, 2003 - In Take-Two Interactive's conference call with analysts early this week the company said that its exclusivity contract with Sony Computer Entertainment America has been amended and, additionally, executives strongly hinted that a version of Grand Theft Auto may come to Xbox.
During the Q&A section of the conference call, Take-Two's Jeffrey Lapin stated that an unannounced SKU would appear on Xbox in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal year (which, for Rockstar, is November to January). Lapin didn't confirm it was Grand Theft Auto, but he implied, according to a source who listened in on the call, that it was a Grand Theft Auto title. If rumor proves true, then a previously published version of the game, i.e. Grand Theft Auto III or Grand Theft Auto Vice City, is in the works for Xbox.

According to the conference transcript, the relevant question asked in the call was: "Is GTA for Xbox coming, and when it is coming?" Lapin's answer was: "We said that there will be an Xbox SKU from Rockstar in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2004 [Nov. to Jan.], but we're not going to comment on what it is at this point."

It is assumed by analysts that the Xbox title Lapin refers to isn't a version of Mafia or Max Payne 2, two potential games that have already been announced or hinted at.

SCEA's contract with Rockstar originally stated that all Grand Theft Auto titles would be exclusive to PlayStation 2 (with the exception of the PC) from 2001 to year's end 2004. Apparently, SCEA and Rockstar have re-negotiated the contract to permit the game to appear on other consoles. Rockstar is currently working on the next Grand Theft Auto title, due for year's end in 2004, which will, as we understand it, complete the original exclusivity contract with SCEA. (Unless that too has been renegotiated.)

A second question was asked: "Will the Sony deal allow you to ship a non-PS2 GTA product even if it's not the most current?" The answer was: "We're not going to comment on terms of the at deal although by the next conference call we'll be able to give some more color."

Take-Two is most likely to announce the full, confirmed news in its next analyst call this August. And you know we'll have more on that when it comes.

I read this this morning, and i have one thing to say : Any possible gta will be quite hard to play on xbox's controller. Either the type S, or the gigantica. Gta is (at times) very fast, and comfort is a big factor gameplay/controller wise of the series.

We'll see...

it says the game is coming Q1 where as the next GTA is gonna be some time Q3-4... so it will not be GTA,

but it could be the same game with a different name... i think that was mentioned earlier too...

i think a remake GTA 3 or GTA:VC is extremely pointless and will not sell nearly as well as they would think unless it has some insane improvements, because as i see it everyone has the game and if you don't then the prices will have to be quite low to make you buy it on the BOX... quite silly, unless its a new game that is a stupid idea
